Now, I've been a Kate Bush fan since the very beginning, and I was very happy to see a whole new generation being exposed to her music as a result of "Stranger Things."", because so many were reacting to Kate, I ended up preparing some comments in advance which I could include when it was appropriate. One of then, was a short potted hidtory of Kate Bush which is a quick introduction, which I will include below and I hope that you will find to be useful. As for Kate Bush recommendations, her discography is of such high quality you could start anywhere and listen to whole albums. You could start with the singles released from her iconic "Hounds Of Love" album (1985): 📍Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) 📍Cloudbusting 📍Hounds Of Love 📍The Big Sky And then move on from there, or you could at the beginning and move forward to see how Kate evolved as an artist. So starting with her debut album "The Kick Inside" (1978) we have: 📍Wuthering Heights 📍The Man With the Child in his Eyes Next album is "Lionheart" (also 1978): 📍Hammer Horror 📍Wow "Never For Ever" (1980): 📍Breathing 📍Babooshka 📍Army Dreamers "The Dreaming" (1982): 📍Sat In Your Lap 📍The Dreaming 📍There Goes A Tenner 📍Suspended In Gaffa The next album is "Hounds Of Love" which I've already mentioned, that should give you enough to start with. Anyway here's the summary about Kate Bush ==== A quick background summary of Kate Bush, Kate started writing songs at about 11 years old, adding more complex lyrics from 13 onwards. So by her teens Kate had written a considerable number of song (note: by her late teens she ultimately ended up writing about two hundred), so her family made demo recordings of about fifty of them, in an attempt to attract the attention of record companies without any success. Until a friend of family passed the demos to David Gilmour (guitarist for Pink Floyd), he was interested and ultimately paid for time at a studio with session musicians to make professional master recordings of three songs from Kate extensive catalogue which he selected. It was those professional recordings that he passed onto EMI executives when he was asked about new talent - when EMI listened they wanted to sign Kate up immediately, but they had to wait until she had left school, Kate signed for EMI when she was 16 years old. EMI paid Kate a retainer which she used to improve her piano playing, voice lessons and also dance & mime lessons from Lindsay Kemp (who had also taught David Bowie to dance). Kate also fronted a pub band that one of her brothers had put together. Eventually EMI called Kate back to work on her debut album "The Kick Inside" although two songs were taken from the earlier professional recordings that David Gilmour had paid for - notably one of them was written when she was just 13 years old and David Gilmour thinks that was the song that convinced EMI to sign Kate.. Kate's debut single "Wuthering Heights" was released in January 1978 and it was so different to everything else in the singles chart and became a massive worldwide hit, reaching number 1 in a number of countries around the world and charting highly in others. When it got to number 1 in the UK, Kate became the first female artist to have a self written song reach number one, this was the 1st of numerous records and milestones that Kate has set in the UK single and album charts. "Wuthering Heights" was Kate's biggest worldwide chart until 2022, when the use of "Running Up That Hill" (RUTH) as a key part of series 4 of "Stranger Times" caused the song to become the most streamed song in the world, for a period of time. RUTH reached number 1 in even more countries worldwide, including becoming Kate's second UK number 1 single 37 years after it's original release, one of three UK single records that Kate set. It reached number 3 in the Billboard single chart. Although it did hit number 1 in some Billboard specialist US singles charts. When "The Kick Inside" was released later in 1978, it sold a million copies in the UK and reached number three in the UK album chart. Kate had at least one single that has reached at least number 12 (or better) in the UK singles chart during the following decades 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s Kate is multi-talented a singer/songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer, video producer and director. Kate was also very heavily involved in the staging of both of her concert tours - 1979 "Tour Of Life" and the 2014 (22 date) concert residency "Before The Dawn", tickets for every performance sold out in under 15 minutes. Kate has inspired/influenced countless numbers of artists/musicians who followed her, she is considered to be a musical icon and a pioneer. Kate was credited as a co-producer on her third album "Never For Ever" and was the sole producer on her fourth album "The Dreaming" and every one of her subsequent studio albums.
Hi Lijie, missed ya, what a wonderful song, I love both of these artist, I have almost all of Kate,s cds, and her first concert on vhs, and I have most of Peter's cds, and a couple of his DVD concerts, two amazing people glad they did this song together. The emotion is deeply felt. Anything off of HOUNDS OF LOVE , is a masterpiece. I,ve seen Peter live I think twice. What a performer. David Gilmour more or less got her started in the music business industry. Someone said you got to listen to this girl, she was 16 at the time, and he made a couple of demo tapes of her and they signed her up, and the rest is history. He also played on a few of her songs, I could go go and on but I won,t. She did have her own show in the UK . SHE was much more popular in UK. SO glad you reacted to this song. ❤ love ya Gene.
This song was inspired by several hardship stories but mainly by the American Depression. The open lyrics “In this proud land…” was the title of a book Peter read about the Depression, which included photographs of hardship taken at that time by among others Dorothea Lange. Because of the American backstory Peter originally wanted to record the song with Dolly Parton. But her office declined and so he turned to his good friend and previous collaborator Kate Bush. And most people are glad that he did.
Most would consider this a slow song and its length probably has something to do with that, but I don't recall another song getting to the chorus in under a minute and a half in! One of the best duets and the two are very good friends!
BTW Peter's original choice was Dolly Parton, but thankfully, she turned him down. If you read the comments left against the official music video, you will see that this song is responsible for making a real difference to so many lives.
Great video. If you haven't heard The Living Years by Mike & The Mechanics, that should be your next reaction. Also, Procol Harum's live version of A Whiter Shade of Pale with the Danish Orchestra.
I'm definitely not an average listener - I prefer longer tracks I can properly get in to (6-11 mins) and appreciate well written lyrics and talented musicians, not a big fan of the more modern commercial stuff. Love this song, resonates with me as I badly broke my neck and back when I was younger and maintaining a job hasn't been easy but I got through and retire next month! This song sounds great on decent audio gear too :) Liked and subbed....
Thanks for the reaction. You should react to Kate's 'A Coral Room', It's a song about time passing, her mothers death and remembering her through memories.
Genesis (the band Peter Gabriel helped found and was lead singer for up until 1975) proves longer songs are worth the time. If you want to hear something beautiful from their catalog, try The Carpet Crawlers (off The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and sung by Gabriel) or Ripples (off Trick of the Tail and sung by Phil Collins).
Nice reaction. Kate has a pretty wide range of stuff -- to pick 3 songs to show her range, I'd go with "Babooshka", "Cloudbusting", and "This Woman's Work".
If you're interested in out of the ordinary song writing (and performance), may I suggest "Hi Ren" by Ren - an extraordinary and utterly captivating 9 minutes of true genius. You won't be disappointed, he's quite unique and leaves many people stunned by his creativity, bravery and message. Best wishes.
Peter Gabriël said that when he was in the studio waiting for Kate, he was really nervous. He said he felt like he was waiting for the Queen. ❤❤
@1959219 She did the vocal arrangements for Big Country's "The Seer" and they were blown away by her work.
I think this is a real masterpiece.
You say it,the best Duett in the 80s

If you liked Peter Gabriels voice, check out "in yout eyes" live (secret world tour) one of the most joyous sets performed.

Oooh WOW. I love Dolly, but Kate Bush is so perfect for this song i can't imagine another voice! 🫶
It's the sun, and a solar eclipse. It symbolises Peter's journey into darkness and depression until Kate draws him back into the light.
Her voice can draw us all back into the light! 🫶

Yes i REALLY enjoyed this duet, their voices (and ENERGIES) blend so well together!!

Was the Beatles song you were trying to think of "Come Together"?
(Please drop a comment down below if I'm right!) 😂
ding ding ding YES that's the one!!
The notes are different of course, but it definitely has a similar groove.
Once again you have done a wonderful reaction to a great song.
Thank you Tom!! 🫶
Hi Lijie, Its a full solar eclipse - very subtle how it lets light back into their lives after full darkness.
Thank you xox
Great video. If you haven't heard The Living Years by Mike & The Mechanics, that should be your next reaction. Also, Procol Harum's live version of A Whiter Shade of Pale with the Danish Orchestra.
I recommend you go see "A Complete Unknown" It's a musical songwriting feast! And it's musical delight. And it's just well-done.
...and it's hard to imagine a musician wouldn't like it, though some viewer and critics didn't get it.
I'm definitely not an average listener - I prefer longer tracks I can properly get in to (6-11 mins) and appreciate well written lyrics and talented musicians, not a big fan of the more modern commercial stuff. Thank you so much for your support Martin!! You are a WARRIOR! Congratulations on your retirement next month! 🙏
Thanks for the reaction. You should react to Kate's 'A Coral Room', It's a song about time passing, her mothers death and remembering her through memories.
great reaction

Kate Bush will always be a class act 😊.
Check out Peter Gabriel - Mercy street but make sure to read up on the meaning of it beforehand!
