I am 71 here. Our music was the best. They would be sounding much different these days without their Auto-Tune or other enhancement technology. We oldies are the goodies.
The most amazing is how they put it all together , how they played the beat , the harmonys together and been in this performence as one together makes me shiver and goosespumps all over , still makes me feel the joy to make music . For us all around the world to feel we are close together in hope to get one some day . heart feels , what the mind is to lost
Mark Knopfler, Lead guitar Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar John Illsey, Bass guitar Terry Williams, Drums Alan Clark, Keys And for these shows July 22/23 1983 additional guest keys, Tommy Mandel.
Creole, at this time was a Southern Swing style music, inspired by African, American slaves in Louisiana, US. French Creole is a language/music style. Music truly is one of the 2 universal languages. The second is of course, laughter, but Mark is definitely a master of the first. He's actually left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different than other guitar players. He's also self taught, and couldn't read music. His playing, with the fingertips and no pick, is inspired by, Classical, Spanish, and American Country music guitarists and is uncommon for an electric guitar player. His style is what is known as the Banjo Roll, where he uses the first three fingers and thumb on his right hand to pluck the strings with the tips of his fingers. Truly a master of his craft! Love you and Trybals reactions to this! Love that everyone appreciates good music. I truly love Middle Eastern music myself!
"Creole" in this case refers to music from places like New Orleans in the United States. Mark sets up that assumption when he says "way on down south," because New Orleans is a southern city. But then he says "London town," so we know we've got a band playing New Orleans blues and jazz in London in the 1970s, which may be why the teenagers didn't care about it. It wasn't their style. Mark Knopfler is still alive and working at age 75. His most recent album came out in April 2024, and he owns a recording studio in London.
Best concert video clip EVER What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑🤑🤑 Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩🤩🤩🤩
It was a demo of Sultans of Swing (1977) that secured Dire Straights their first record deal. Mark Knopfler is a guitar virtuoso, and he also did the song-writing, composing and arrangement for the band; he also always made sure to give the other band members a chance to shine. Mark is best know for his unique guitar-plucking style (unlike most guitarists, he doesn't use a pick), his amazing tone and his unique phrasing, which contribute to his extraordinary ability to elicit emotion through his guitar, usually producing a visceral impact on the listener. Fun Fact: In addition to all of that, Mark is actually left handed, but is playing guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! If you want to really see the breathtaking musicianship of this band, and the kind of epic musical masterpiece they could collectively produce, you have to treat yourself to their performance of "Telegraph Road" from this same Alchemy Live concert. Other different but spectacular examples of Mark's talent are also on display in "Once Upon a Time in the West" and Private Investigation," also from Alchemy Live. And no exploration of Dire Straits would be complete without at least checking out "Brothers in Arms" and "Money for Nothing" from On the Night Live. (Their live performances are always next level!). Enjoy 😁
Every single one of your comments is totally valid. Most people, I think, are so stunned by the entire performance that the don't point out that Mark's guitar playing towards the end goes at break-neck speed, at just kedps getting faster, so props to the entire band for keeping up with him 😊
@@adnanreacts92 Nice well considered reaction Adnan. Mark composed the music for 9 movie soundtracks, most famously, Local Hero, all diverse musical gems, and he’s the prolific songwriter & lyricist of all 6 Dire Straits albums & 10 Solo Albums with his 96er band of very accomplished musicians. Plus he’s a unique, magical, inimitable guitarist, singer & arranger. The whole 9 musical yards. When this live show took place, 1983, David Knopfler (Mark's brother) had left the band and was replaced by Hal. The drummer was replaced by Terry Williams who went crazy on the drums.
That was a nice reaction brother! Dire Straits in one of my favorite bands of all time and Mark Knopfler is my favorite guitar player of all time! Saluds from Brazil!
I really enjoyed your reaction to one of my all time favourite bands and guitar players. I loved how your smile got bigger and bigger as the performance progressed. Welcome to the world of Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits. Might I suggest that you also check out Telegraph Road from the Same concert?
A song from Dire Straits that you really need to check out is Tunnel Of Love, live from Wembley. The Wembley version is probably the the best version of the song as they play it slightly differently every time they play.
It's all about competition: you have to be great to sell albums. Because when the greats are already on the market... you get the picture lol Goood old times. Now, things are different but I can still enjoy such masterpieces!
You are absolutly right: you shouldn't watch a song while reading the lyrics - at least not for the first time. There is a difference between listening to a song and reading along to a song.
So funny that i have known this song for oiver 40+ years and I still cannot undersatnd what they are saying; but, You got it. I teach English as a foreign language (TEFL) but you got it better than I do. That is not a question - seriousously
Hello from South Africa! I really like your honesty I was lucky enough to hear them while I was young Sadly we never got to see them due to the sanctions because of apartheid. I agree about the sad decline in music Thankfully these were preserved for us I have a suggestion from my country if you would like Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the African concert, Diamonds on the soles of her shoes, way back in 1987, I had just finished my nursing training, so it has some meaningful for me
Hi, if you liked this performance I think you'll really like the song Calling Elvis from the concert Dire Straits - Live " On The Night" 1993. It has something towards the end that you dont see anymore in bands. Anyway love your channel and reactions. Cheers from Australia. 👍🎸🎸🎸
You should listen to the radio version of this song. You can understand it better and you get the full outtro guitar solo which isn’t in this version and is EPIC. It’s the reason I love this song so much.
Echo this statement. I remember the first time I heard this song like it was yesterday. I was in high school and there was nothing like it playing on the radio. It was rock and roll, not disco crap. Live Dire Straits was amazing but it should not be your first exposure, especially when there are probably significant cultural differences. Even within America there may be folks who miss the story. But really that didn't matter to my dumb 16 year old ass. It was all about that guitar. Still is almost 50 years later. He is recognized as one of the best ever for a reason.
The interpretation is all about music. Hard to hear someone try to analyze life experience of others and try to explain it to people that lived it. Mark is known for his great guitar work and his story telling of life experience,
I agree that it's better not to have lyric subtitles, and that bothering to analyze the lyrics is really not necessary either. Just enjoy the music and react.
Mark tells stories with his songs and he pretends to be a character in each story. In Money for Nothing he's an appliance mover worker. In his solo stuff he does the same. In Marble Town he's a hobo who has to lay low in a cemetery to escape capture. In Why Aye Man he's a brick layer finding work in Germany. In Baloney Again he's a black man trying to get his family cross country safely.
DS were always better live than in the studio for me and the “Alchemy” concert was awesome, see more of it especially “Telegraph Road” a masterpiece. And Live Wembley “Tunnel of Love” the outro is so so good it will take you away.
This is the biggest gap between a studio version and live version of a song for me. The studio version is great. But this particular live with the part they added is absolutely phenomenal and blows the studio version out of the water.
I have a metal request ecommendation for you. The band is Mushroomhead, and the song is Destroy the World Around Me. It's an awesome song that I think you'll enjoy.
When he says guitar George, Mark is actually talking about George Harrison of the Beatles. Creole is from the area of New Orleans with French and Spanish influences.
No he isn’t this is a story about watching a mediocre jazz band in a little pub in London he went into to get out of the rain and have a couple of pints.
I keep hearing people repeating this nonsense about George Harrison. It's about the members of the band he heard in a jazz bar in London, nothing to do with George Harrison. For a start GH was a lead guitarist and the George he's singing about is 'Strictly Rhythm' the clues are there
Mark entered a pub south of the river and a mediocre band was playing, one of the band was George. Nothing to do with George Harrison. The band called themselves The Sultans of Swing.
I love this video. Can watch it over and over and I am 72 years old. It's timeless for my generation ❤.

The drum set was taken off stage on a stretcher immediately after this performance in critical condition.... thankfully it pulled through! 😂❤
Yeah, that performance by Terry Williams was definitely attempted murder.

The drum set had to smoke a cigarette after it recovered.
