He's telling a story about stepping into a little club to get out of the rain and seeing a little band playing jazz and the band calls themselves "The Sultan's of Swing" Harry and Guitar George are members of that band. This song is not about the Dire Straits band.

Playing a pub in Greenwich / Lewisham-ish in the 1970s, a Dixieland horn band must have gone down like a lead balloon with the punters. But f**k it, they were the Sultans of Swing. Can imagine they were inspiring.

  • @madsandreassen5441

This is Dire Straits, an English band that played from 1978-1992 roughly. They were at the time of this concert, and even more so with their next album “Brothers In Arms” (you must know “Money for Nothing” from that) the biggest rock band in the word.
This song is from their first album from 1978, this version is from Alchemy, a live album from 1984.
The main guy with the guitar and singing is Mark Knopfler, one of the greatest guitar players ever, famous for his fingerpicking style - and the rest of the band are equally brilliant. Knopfler and bass player John Ilsley are the original members and the only ones to in the band the whole time, the others changed a bi over the years.
Mark Knopfler writes all the music, and many songs, like this one, is a situation he experienced. Sultans Of Swing is about a (not very good) pub jazz band he that happened to be playing in a bar he walked into.
All their music is fantastic - the whole of the Alchemy album is as brilliant and breathtaking as this…
Knopfler has done lots of solo albums and a lot of movie soundtracks as well.

I'm a 60 year old white man. I would like to say what a spectacular reaction this was. I would also like to say that this is not white people music. Because of the different genres of music represented in this song this is all people music . For a society to be totally equal we have to see beyond color to the fact that we are all supposed to be equal . Sure we as one culture versus another have different likes and dislikes but the one thing that brings us all together is the fact that we are citizens of the greatest country the world has ever seen. I'll give you a thumbs up young man. I'll even subscribe. I'll ask only one thing....... that you consider the fact that we are all just men who should be treated exactly the same at all times. Thank you for your reaction and the introduction to what I hope is going to be a great channel. Happy New Year young man .

Welcome to he "Rabbit Hole" that leads you to Dire Staits" & Mark Knopfler. A Sound of Silence, good band. This version of "Sultans" is considered one of the top FIVE peformances of all time. They have a shorter version for recordings and other performances. They play quite a variety of music. Mark (I believe) writes all (?) of the music performed by the band and also since he went on his own. He can write music of all kinds. As one fan wrote.... he can make a song of the telephone book and It would be a #1 hit! 😅 Check out Sebs Duran's cover for "Sultans" for his opinion on the song that is not extremely complicated as some singing instructors are. Yet it is valid as he played the guitar since he was eight years old. To him he thinks Mark (red jacket) is the best guitar player he has ever heard. I could rattle off a dozen of my favorite songs by them and him but my style may not be the same as your. So.... I won't do that. You'll have to discover him by yourself. I think that would be better. Another artist that is worth mentioning is Dan Vasc (a Brazilian artist) who a lot of people have never heard of, yet he is the #1 artist of RUclips Music.. To get you started, check out "Amazing Grace" for a good example of where his voice can go to. Metal style?. No no no, it is not exactly what you think. 😅 You will like it. Also, Lights of Taormina, Bring Me to Life, Brothers in Arms, Telegraph Road, and Many others. He has over 240 covers. He has an extremely versatile voice. His love is "Metal", but, he can sing in ANY style Anyway, I like how you are doing your Reactions. Keep up the good work!

I’ve watched more reaction videos to this song than I’d care to admit. This is by far the worst I’ve seen. No respect or understanding of what he just witnessed from the entire band. In his eyes they are all playing different songs. It “just works”. Does that make sense? No sir, it doesn’t. And his name is Mark Knopfler.
