Loved your reaction. Yeah thats Mark Knopfler. The best guitarist in the world. Im so glad I got to see them perform in Copenhagen around 1987. We were actually told by the venue to remain seated at all times during the concert. At the second song we were ALL off our seats and ON our seats dancing.... "slightly" encouraged by mr Knopfler himself. After all they couldn't throw all of us out. So we were up there dancing throughout the concert -everyone!
And Sultans is the best Dire Straits song ever ♥️
    Cheers Susan

I'm so happy to see you finally getting around to Dire Straits. Genius indeed. Every song tells a story. The madman on drums is Terry Williams. He came on one of these videos recently to comment that he is still "bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee" which is a line from another of their greatest hits, Money For Nothing. They played both at the Live Aid concert in '85. Luckily they were on just before Queen. Nobody wanted to follow Queen that day!
Mark is highly respected among guitarists & has even recorded with Chet Atkins. Many top artists would give anything to work with him. He and Emmylou Harris did a tour and an album together. His personal story is interesting & you might enjoy reading his bio. I hope you will react to many more Dire Straits videos. You can't go wrong. Rock on.

The lead singer never lost his smile during the entire performance. He was having the time of his life! I'm sure the other members were, too, but his facial expressions made him glow. I think he was really enjoying the crowd and feeding off of their energy. I had not heard that in years. I am certain if I looked in my CD collection it would be there. I enjoy watching you enjoy the tunes I enjoyed back then. HAHA OK, enough with "enjoy." Great reaction to a classic! 🔥 Thanks, Debra, for your choice! 🙏🏻

When I think of Dire Straits that recognizable guitar sound is the first thing that comes to mind and in this live performance it was lifted to an extent of musical pleasure.
"Brothers in Arms" is still my favourite by this band, especially as it was played so much during the war in my country in the '90s..It actually became an anthem of every soldier here. But, besides that, it's a masterpiece that gives chills, you should hear it at one point. When the time permits, of course ;-)

  • @NondescriptMammal

I remember when they first came out... this was their breakout hit from their debut album...and it was when the heyday of rock was giving way to disco, and the rock radio landscape was looking kind of bleak.... Dire Straits was a breath of fresh air, having their own unique sound and cranking out several excellent songs.
It was Knopfler's distinctive guitar style that really made them stand out. Such a smooth clean pretty style that blurs the line between rhythm and lead guitar in a unique way. One of the true greats in my mind.

  • @phoebelewis2788
    @phoebelewis2788 2 года назад +4

I could tell from your reaction at the beginning that you were not expecting how brilliant this performance would be. As it went on you realised that you were watching pure greatness. Mark is a pure genius, especially the way he makes that guitar sing and this band was a "one off". I have seen them live and it was the best concert ever and totally mind blowing. Mark is ranked at number 27 of the best guitarist by Rolling Stone Magazine but to me he is number 1. The story behind this song is Mark was in some pub and there was a band playing called "Sultans of Swing" and Mark wrote about the experiences of this band. Mark used to be a journalist. Everybody that hears this song for the first time is in total awe. Thank you for your great reaction. Another great thing about this band is the length of their songs, which have to be great to keep the audience interested and wanting more, and this has been achieved.

Mark Knopfler (of the red jacket and sweatband) is a phenomenon. He's from Newcastle and lives in London now, and he's still working at age 74. He released a new album in April 2024. He and bass player John Illsley (white jacket in this video) were the core of Dire Straits from the band's founding in 1977 until it finally disbanded in 1995. A lot of other people played in the band at various times, but they're the two constants. Mark wrote all the songs for their 6 studio albums. And after 1995, he launched a solo career and put out 10 more albums under his own name. He's also done 9 film scores and a bunch of collaborations and guest appearances.
If you like his songwriting, you've got quite a journey ahead of you. I think you're right that he's got an older-sounding voice, and he really aged into it beautifully once he hit his 40s. (He's 34 in this video.) He's definitely got some American influences going on. He once made an album with Chet Atkins, who was a famous finger-picking guitarist out of Nashville, and he played lead guitar on a Bob Dylan album and even toured with Dylan at once point. But just when you think you've got him pinned down, he goes and starts putting bagpipes in his songs.
I'll give you one link to get you started. This is a short piece of film music he did with Evelyn Glennie in 2016. ruclips.net/video/xdAhSZB2lh8/видео.html

EXCELLENT reaction, EXCELLENT review!!!! Perfect...no interruptions....play through, absorb the entire song and performance and then give your reaction and review. I hesitate to say that I seem to be the only one who has ever commented on this, but to me there is an uncanny similarity in Mark Knopfler's vocals and Bob Dylan. Of course, I'm a ripe old 76 year old so maybe I have a more direct connection to the 60's than most, but go listen to "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" or "Like a Rolling Stone" and tell me I'm wrong. It is a unique talk-singing form of story telling. Dylan's first hits were released in 1962 when Mark would have been 13. Dylan actually toured England in December of '62 so Mark must have heard him at some point. There is no mention I can find of Mark being influenced by Dylan but......... BTW, impossible to not comment on one of the very great performances by a drummer ever...Terry Williams.

But I've never seen them, so I understand what you mentioned about expecting a different, more "masculine and mature" look from this voice. That's how it went for me. But omg, this live performance was insane. There is shown some fantastic musicality in this guitar and bass playing and I loved this drums too 😱. And I thought you're right, this song isn't too aggressive, it's more mellow and melodic with that prominent riff.

Mark is a story teller with both the lyrics and the unique sound of his guitar. For the ones who has not catched so far, I will lay down a chain story from Mark. At the begining just listen to the lyrics and then listen the songs in order again:
Where do you think you are going
    Private Investigations
    On every street

If you enjoyed this, check out Telegraph Road from the same Alchemy Live tour - a different feel, but one of the best live performances of all time

He is British. It was a story. He is talking about a time he heard a band playing and went in to see it. The band's name was "the sultans of swing", and weren't that great, I think. He wrote this song and it was their first hit.
I believe he was 34 when this concert was done.
I have listened to this video so many times and it never gets old. Thanks

Interviewer asked Prince how it feels to be the best guitarist of all time. He said, “you’ll have to ask Mark Knofler”.

I've seen 50+ bands from 1978 to 2015, including over 100 Grateful Dead shows, and THIS is my favorite live performance of all time. 2nd is Chicago live at Tanglewood 1970 "25 or 6 to 4".
