First time I saw this, I thought about that video of the "Drummer overqualified for the gig.` 😏No, seriously, he slayed it, though if
@samlawrence4670 is correct about that story, it didn't seem to bother the rest of the band any. Go for it Terry!

Mark Knopfler is a guitarist’s guitarist. Brilliant finger picking style that is his own.

Yep. When it comes to purely instrumental compositions, Joe Satriani is my fave, but I admire a lot of guitarists out there, and Knopfler for me will always be "Mark The Long Thumb"😄
This song is an evergreen; as I'm from Poland I know kids from polish music schools, for whom it was a point of honor, learning to play "Sultans Of Swing" or "Brothers In Arms".

I was there. I was somewhere ourt in that crowd. And I'm a singer and guitarist. Mark tore the fucking place down for the entirety of that concert. Terry, what can I say? He was locked in to the "pocket" of every cut. These videos where you see him singing along with every solo to feel it, to ride the wave of the song and pass that along to the rest of the band... That's the kind of drummer you want behind you when you're standing up front and just giving it.

The concert was in 1983 in London. The fashion was very 80s, including the unstructured jackets with the sleeves pushed up and the sweatbands. Dire Straits was a British band, but the rhythm guitarist was American. The lead guitarist, Mark Knopfler, is still working at the age of 74 and released a new album in April 2024.

Billy Joel started, sometime in the 2000s, not selling tickets to the front rows of his concerts, because they were usually bought by scalpers and sold to rich people or companies, and those folks were there to be seen, not for the music. Once the concert was about to begin, his people would then go out to the cheap seats and find music lovers to be invited up to the front row for the concert.

One of the very greatest guitarist of all time and criminally underrated by music journalists. The usual lists are often topped by people that play relentlessly hard, fast and loud, but jamming so many notes together it sometimes sounds more like a technical exercise than a song. Knopflers playing is deceptively technical with a control of tempo and volume that is second to none and every note feels so deliberate. It's like between his lyrics the guitar also has a voice and something it wants to say. Telegraph Road and Brothers in Arms are a couple other famous examples of his great "duets" with his guitars.

A friend gave me his Walkman and said that I must hear this. It blew my mind! I bought the double cassette and wouldn’t stop listening to the concert. Then, with the little money I had, I bought their other cassettes. Then Brothers in Arms came out and the Dire Straits came to Israel for three concerts in 1985. I couldn’t go 😢. I have all of their recordings and all of Mark Knopflers solo recordings. 34 years later, I fulfilled my dream and saw Mark live in Budapest in 2019 and sat with my wife in the first row😀

You're so right about moments when you can tell the band is in the zone. They make magical moments. Those times when the live version trumps the original one. Another one like that that comes to mind is Jamiroquai - Main Vein - Live in Verona. These guys are so damn funky and in the zone! You guys might want to give them a whirl.

Lucky enough to have experienced Dire Straits in April 1979 at Center Stage in Canton Michigan. A small intimate venue that'd hold around 1000 people with best acoustics I've ever heard.

Awesome reaction my dudes. Big hug from Sweden. This music means alot to me im born 1981 and my old papa used to put my legs on his feet at just 5 years old and made me learn the rythm in this music. I Swear this music made me appreciate dancing and rock in general. I will forever cherish this memory thanks to Dire Straits music. My old father is gone 7 years past now but memory remains.

I love in older videos when the drummers are moving faster than the cameras could keep up, makes them look even more ridiculously fast, ludicrous speed.

Great reaction! Thanks! This was their first live tour in 1978 and they were only contracted in 1977. Mark Knopfler is my one of my top favourite songwriters. This really happened when he walked into a pub to shelter for the rain (same goes for Money for Nothing. Check that story and remember the time period back then with the real MTV). IMO Knopfler is the very best guitarist ever for many reasons. And this performance is one of the (In my oppinion) three greatest all time (Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb @Pulse 1994 live,. The live version of Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil from the "get yer ya ya's out" album - 3 minutes insane solo by Keith Richards and Mick Taylor. And this one). I don't know about the audience . May be some vips in front and plebs in the back? 😁 , but Terry Williams (drums) had his dad for the first time there at a live show. So, he wanted to impress him, and well, he did. He started uptempo (compaired to the studio version, which is good indeed, but this performance was insane) and Mark Knopfler has no difficulty at all by picking up some extra tempo, improvising 70% of the solos, using his strat as a Banjo, Timing is SPOT ON, Not a single miss on a clear strat, and even then it just looks like he is doing his groceries on an Saturday with all the time in the world. Terry is a freacking monster there at the drums, absolutely killing it. But Mark Knopfler is just scary.... It didn't even looked like he needed to put in some effort. I think he only showed 50% of his capabilities there.... EPIC Performance 🙂

It was a pleasure to watch the Rappers get swept away by that "lullaby", when Mark sang on his guitar during the last quiet segment. I saw the "studio" version during their fist Canadian tour. I kept thinking "Let Her RIP"! This performance did just that. It's great to watch Mark direct the choreography and tempo changes, just with a look or a nod. He never had to "reel" another member back in. Total control of the moment!😃
