@@MgoUmk No, no....the wrist surgeries were substantial and hampered his level of confidence when he tried to return to top-notch tennis, because in the back of your mind, you know that the past injury is still vulnerable. Honestly, he never really recovered to his top level following the injury.
The unfortunate fact is that the game will see more serious surgeries at its' present level. Professional tennis has reached such heights of intensity that physically, it becomes an inevitability that both careers will be shorter than 10 years ago, and accompanied by more injuries. We've been witnessing quite a bit of that already (joints, muscle tears, burn-out). The physical demand is really an abnormal one on the body compared to team sports, and the ATP and WTA calendar tend to be long and intense.
You can see that in his last 2 forehands, first one was really short as he couldn't hit through the ball and the final shot, he tried to through but not enough control. His FH wrist mechanics is no more the same
So so sad to see his career end like this. Tennis just lost one of the best players of all time, just goes to show how an injury can ruin a player's career. Goodbye 2020 U.S. open champion and 2 time atp finals champion with 17 tour titles and a gorgeous backhand.
Can someone explain how specifically the wrist injury has hampered Thiem’s game. Is it the mental aspect, the loss of power/flexibility in the wrist? Mad how injuries can just retire players regardless of the muscle memory/endless hours of coaching and hitting
Because no one teaches it to kids. "Experts" then use it as a "confirmation" that the shot is not usable in modern tennis, because nobody uses it (failing to grasp the totally flawed logic). And when someone teaches it to a young player, it's often an old-school coach with no idea how to hit the modern one-hander (see Mpetshi Perricard and his 20th century style backhand). Thiem's modern, uniquely powerful backhand was radical and innovative with so much to offer to new generations of players who would greatly benefit from studying it carefully, as it really opened completely new options to the single-handed backhand, but I'm afraid his know-how will be lost forever. Nobody cares or even knows. That for me is the saddest part of Thiem's retirement.
@@J.-M. Meh, the pace & power of the modern game is too much for a 1HB which requires such precise timing. It's ripe for exploitation. Such a glaring weakness shan't be allowed by anyone serious about reaching the top.
@@got2bjosh This is the BS that clueless people keep repeating (the growing cluelessness of the general public is actually the biggest weakness of the shot). Thiem beat Djokovic in 5 out of their last 7 matches (being the only player in the world capable of doing it) exactly because of his uniquely powerful backhand, not despite it. And no, tennis was not a different sport a couple of years ago. The level was actually in many ways superior.
@@J.-M. And where is he now? Swiftly retired. Why? Because of an inefficient and demanding game style that took a lot out of him & his wrist. Once it was gone physically there was no getting it back mentally. Same with Shortzman who also couldn't hang mentally once the game passed him by physically. Hem & haw all you want, 1HBs are done.
