Mark knopfler one of the greatest guitarist of all time, epic!!
The GOAT simple.
Dire straights brothers in arms nelson mandela concert is a "MUST"
I was there that night. John Illsley’s wife was in hospital giving birth to twins so Eric Clapton came on so we were well spoilt.
@deniseadams1703 WOW that is a concert to have been to especially dire straights brothers in arms which as far as im concerned is the best live version of it period,
i was at pink floyds pulse concert at earls court and two michael jackson concerts dangerous tour and history tour,
these are my biggest music concerts, but my god i would of given my right arm to have been there for the dire straights brothers in arms awesome performance sounded soooooo good,
im jealous 😆😆😆😆
Don't do Nelson Mandela please!! I'm a south African, and he was a despot, criminal.....terrible human being!!!!!
Terry Williams is killing it after knowing his dad would be there and proud of him for the first time....the band knew this so they pushed it along as good mates do. Not women.
The drums are so freakin' dope. Wtf!!
The Best of British. 🙂
Quite simply one of the best rock band performances of all time!!!
except for the vocals , the guitar on this version might be fire ; but the singing on this is fucking horrible 😂 he needs to just stick to the studio version when it comes to the vocals
Mark Knopfler simply one of the greatest guitarists to ever play, doesn't use a pick
Unless you count Pick Withers...
@@Denashi was wondering when the first Pick Withers remark would come 😂😂 bravo 👏
@@aaronherbison7316 it was just too easy! 😆
Left handed, plays right handed. :)
Chet Atkins style. Knopfler is so good.
Mark actually sneaks in one of the longest guitar solos in rock music history in that gig. Incredible player.. No pick required.
Terry Williams on drums going ape because his dad was in the audience and it was the first time he had heard his son play. Absolute magic.
Oh fr? Damn
I did not know that! Can you imagine?
Thats freaking beautiful!
That’s awesome!
@@derklavierspieler7491 Playing with Dire Straits to me means “first time”
😄"Who is this guy?? " he's just Mark Knopfler, one of the greatest guitarist and song writer of all time !
"Woow, not only that he has an incredible voice, but he is sooo good at this lead-guitar playing..." 😂😂😂😂 Oh, bless these kids of today... 🎉
Couldn't have said it better myself!!!! 👏 ❤ you won't see a more technical guitarist in our life time, he didn't need any trumpet playing band he ain't what the thinks is rock n Roll 😂
And that is why music is my religion.
This is it, #1!!
This is one of the best drumming performances of all time. Terry Williams is a master.
The best drummer I have heard is from the band ISUS - Panopticon - the best I have heard.
@@dawnrazornephilim Then, you never heard of John Bonham (Led Zeppelin).
or Kenny Aronoff 😉
Opinions opinions 🤣
@@Miblive buddy rich laughing in the back ground. He's Bonzo's daddy
@@dawnrazornephilim Neil Peart (Rush) is the best thrtr ever was!
We have a ton of excellent bands from my generation. They are still around 40 and 50 years later. I turned 18 in 1972. I was a hippie, a wild child and a free spirit. So the rest of the 70's and most of the 80's were a blur 😂. But I remember the music ❤. Lovin' me some Dire Straights. Excellent show ❤. Thanks for the memories.
I wonder how many of today's bands will be around in 40 or 50 years? I'm guessing, a few.
Terry Williams, the Dire Straits answer to Keith Moon. Amazing.
I'm 65, Disabled Vet. I own 71 guitars. I am humbled each time I watch this. In my mind, probably the best there ever was.
Man guitar with the drums best I’ve ever heard in any song together.
except for the vocals , the guitar on this version might be fire ; but the singing on this is fucking horrible 😂 he needs to just stick to the studio version when it comes to the vocals
This audience got their money's worth
I watch this AT LEAST once a day ❤. Feel deprived if I don't!!
Me too..
Real music real musicians
Unlike today's so called music.. ur correct.. much respect..
These guy's were having one of those rare, "Peak Experiences". Like Tom Brady winning a Super Bowl or LeBron James NBA Championship winning Game. Everything coming together just perfectly, and thank God they filmed it!
The Best guitar Plucker EVER
I am a 70 year old English woman who had the utter joy of seeing them live. I thought my heart and ears would explode awesome
Me too, I’m 75 and saw this tour at Wembley and again at Hammersmith Odeon, there are no adjectives to describe their absolute brilliance. How lucky were we?
Money for nothing. Dire straits you might have heard was one of the first music videos to be featured on MTV sting from the police sings on the beginning of
This was 47 years ago
Probably one of the best live rock performances ever, a masterpiece.
Change probably to definitely bro. Musical perfection.
@@rogerramjet5302 Where have all singer/song writers gone? Aside from one or eh ok songs, Rock n Roll is either dead or taking a couple decades off. Where are all out angry young men and women, where are the voices of this generation.
@@brunoberardi4815 jazz, funk, fusion ...
@@brunoberardi4815 The voices of this generation are conformist sheep who freak out about people having a different opinion on Twitter and try to get them kicked off! I mean I guess they could write songs about that but it might not be that interesting.
It's a definitely from me too. Nothing comes close.
I also think that the Dire Straits song you have heard is “Money for nothing”. There is a live version of it in which Eric Clapton also plays guitar, Sting sings on chorus and Phil Collins is drumming.
Another good song is “Brothers in Arms”.
Reckon you are on the money with "Money for Nothing" huge playing time on MTV regularly
Actually, they did a reaction video to Sultan's of swing, with Tommy Emmanuel, so I think that's where the familiarity comes from.
I heard them live in concert in Dallas Texas! They were incredible together.
Yes 😀
Romeo and Juliet good as well
So glad I was born when Mark Knopfler was around.
That drummer KILLED it.
This guy aka, the drummer, is Mr. Terry Williams. What a legend.
Best living guitarist ❤
Unadulterated skill without the distraction of visual spectacle or artificial enhancements. Dire Straits is a testament to what music should be.
I love how they are all having fun especially the back up keyboardist (top right) is jumping thru the whole time. You can even see him air guitaring at one point.
Mark Knopfler is probably the best guitarist in the world. this track is just phenomenal especially live.
No matter how many times I have seen this video, I still say WOW!! Terry Williams on the drums, looks like he's fighting evil and kicking it's ass!!
Mark even looked back a time or 2 and acknowledged his beating the hell out of those drums. One of my favorite bands, their first album was the first album I played in 1978 after buying a knock out stereo with a pioneer 120watt/channel receiver, 2 JBL studio monitor speakers, a 24 band pioneer equalizer 12 bands per channel, a technics turntable and a technics casette deck that was, at the time capable of playing metal cassette tapes which at the time was as good as it got back then. That entire album was played onboard my ship and was bought at the US Navy exchange in Naples Italy, our home base when deployed. It cost $1200 in 1978. The second album I played on it was the first Boston album, it sounded insane.
The drummer is from another planet.
Straits FC playing on the home field here!
10 of the best minutes on RUclips. Knopfler is absolutely brilliant, and Terry Williams KILLS it on drums. Such a tight, inventive, talented band.
This performance is widely considered one of the best live performances in rock history. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world and still going. Terry Williams on the drums was simply a beast. Terry is now 76 and retired in Swansea Wales.
There are two keyboard players; the dancing guy is just playing organ-like chords, whilst the the guy surrounded by keys is playing piano and synths.
Alan Clark and dancing Tommy Mandel. The best !
Thanks! I couldn’t figure out who the dancing guy was. In another reaction video, a commenter said it was a guy playing bongos.
Tunnel of Love. is all you need.
Dire Straits in concert had two keyboard players. The principal keyboard player was Allan Clarke, he is a classically trained pianist. He went on to be Tina Turner's director of music.
Terry Williams is an all time rock god, amazing drummer. I wish I had his energy
These guys are unmistakable, it takes one listen of these guys and your never going to right, 😁
"Telegraph Road" and "Tunnel Of Love" from the same concert, you won't be sorry. I was fortunate enough to see Dire Straits live twice.
agree and also saw them twice
Watch the Sydney 86, concert, much better than the Alchemy concert.
Tunnel of Love is especially epic. The tone MK gets out of the guitar never fails to give me goosebumps
I agree
You have a privilege to watch one of the best rock guitarists. That is a guy who sings, and plays solo at the same time 😊. Well, drummer is great, bit that is obvious.
Lead singer is Mark Knopler The band is Dire Straights.
Saw these guys on this tour. No backup band. Just three straight hours of Dire Straits. Excellent sound and craftsman ship.
100% still top class after all these years
This stands amongst the finest live performances of all time,
@@robbpowell194 & I'm so happy I was there to see it, Hammersmith Odeon was a great venue. ;)
That drummer is amazing!!!!! He's like the energizer bunny.
Terry Williams - doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Technically a genius and should be mentioned in the same way Moon, Bonham etc are.
100% the GOAT after this absolutely magical fingers! ....wow!
I love that half of that isn't even in the studio version of the song, they're just jamming the heck out, having a great time. Mark Knopfler has to be one of the best improv guitarists ever.
except for the vocals , the guitar on this version might be fire ; but the singing on this is fucking horrible 😂 he needs to just stick to the studio version when it comes to the vocals
Another shout out for the sound engineer. Masterclass in balance that created this level of performance. If he had been having a bad day this epic performance would have been lost for ever.
the drummer was killing it
Terry Williams drove the entire performance with outstanding fills throughout - best drummer ever
The greatest guitar player of all time MK!
A group of great musicians having a good time...
Congratulations. You just watched the greatest live guitar performance of all time. And I was there! Just got back from a 6 month deployment with the Navy. What a way to come back to civilisation!
Probably (and I know this a massive statement) the best live performance of popular music ever recorded
You guys notice when Mark looks into the camera and smiles like he's having the time of his life...? The man's a genius.
They were distracted by the dancing keyboardist
Best live performance by a drummer this guy goes absolutely insane , the whole band does.
The Song ( Money For Nothing ) is one of their Classics.
Can't stop listen to this masterpiecs.
Best band ever, Mark Knopflers smile is absolute pure joy.
Nothing can beat this.
Another great song is
" Brothers in arms" dont miss it.
What i love most is that they are all obviously having a blast playing together. Fabulous performance from the whole band - in the zone, individually and collectively!
Terry Williams on Drums is killing it!!
At 83 an old Elvis fan and bluegrass banjo
Player I love marks guitar playing . Great review guys
Around 05:30 Terry Williams the drummer lays down those epic fills and Mark and his bass player look back at Terry and each other, smile and say "this is going to be next level". When I first heard this version I was spoiled--much better than the studio cut.
These guy were just incredible. Remember when they came out. Loved them
When Mark was young he wanted a red guitar like his idol the great guitarist Hank Marvin and as they say the rest is history.
This performance brings me to tears every single time. Truly amazing.
Mark Knopfler OBE is a Guitar giant, one of the most emotive guitarists to grace the mainstream, an equal to David Gilmour, Eric Clapton often plays Rhythm Guitar for him. He's also a brilliant Lyricist and Composer, a consummate storyteller with a strong romantic bone.
Dire Straits sold over 120 million Albums. They were one of the biggest live acts of the 80s.
"Sultans of Swing" was their debut hit, and generally considered their most famous song. If you hadn't heard it but recognized the voice, then you may have heard "Money For Nothing" (featuring Sting) or "Walk Of Life". Both got a lot of airplay in the USA, with the former having an iconic video clip and very controversial verse (by today's standards, disregarding context).
They are an amazing Band that are worth a deep dive. Roots, Pub Rock, Bluegrass elements, Progressive, they covered decent ground. They weren't angling for trendy, their undeniable chops made them immensely popular around the world. Some absolute epic songs like "Tunnel of Love" and "Telegraph Road" with stunning, moving Solos. The heart wrenching "Brothers In Arms", The stirring "Going Home", the brooding "Private Investigations". Great pop with "Lady Writer" and "Down to the Waterline" and "Romeo & Juliet". Dire Straits were a top class, supremely talented Band that truly deserve their place in the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame (even if Mark Knopfler didn't even show up to his own induction).
Not to mention having written the scores for at least 6 movies that I know of.
And to be fair regarding the Hall of Fame induction, it wasn't that he didn't want to go but rather, he had other obligations. Had his priorities in order.
@Penderyn you saw him playing and singing and you think your little soapbox rant about an honour changes his stature?.
There is no way to compare this with any thing, Mark is the best, sings lead and plays lead very rare, super drummer they are the best in what they do, keep it up you to.
he is not just a great guitar player but he is officially ranked amongst the best of all time guitar players.
This is one of the greatest songs ever made
If there is better unblemished 11 minute guitar masterpiece ever, I'm yet to see it. I'm 56 & wish I was a few years older so I could have witnessed The Beatles in full flight.. Witnessing ABBA mid to late 70's then Dire Straights through the early to mid eighties was probably the next best thing.
I was there in 1983 at Hammersmith Odeon London they blew the roof probably the best thing I've seen live ever I will never forget it.🇬🇧🇬🇧
Sometimes a live performance is so sublime it transcends all musical genres so regardless of your taste in music you can only watch and listen in amazement it just doesn,t get any better than this
I didn't even realize they were British until a few years ago. This band is so toght and every musician gets his time to shine. Mark is too good to be believed! One of the greatest guitarists of all time. He makes it look so darn easy. Everyone has a great time, and the audience loves it. I was in my 20s but could have never afforded a ticket❤.
I had the great pleasure of being side stage at a Dire Straits concert in London, a friend was a printer who printed the tickets for the tour so got side stage passes.
The performance of all band members is simply not from this planet!
It’s a masterpiece of human mankind and must not be lost!!!!
It should be send out to the stars! Digital, CD and Vinyl. If human mankind die sometime, this has to exist forever 🙏
Love this version because the drummer is going ham! Knopfler's finger picking is very recognizable...so laid back!
Dude - listen to all their albums. Genius at work. Dire Straits, Communique, Making Movies, Brothers In Arms, On Every Street
“Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink.”
-Douglas Adams "So Long and Thanks for All The Fish"
Brothers in arms
Awesome! I was going to suggest this a while ago. My hat goes off to the drummer Terry Williams who made this legendary concert what it was!
He lays the studio version to waste.
Agreed! Those drum fills were insane!
Sure! Terry Williams and Once upon a time in the west are the best of Alchemy
The drummer surprised them a couple of times
The story behind Williams' performance is that his father, who disapproved of some of his son's choices (particularly rock and roll) was in the crowd, and moved by his son's performance, and the quality of Dire Straits in general.
If you look, there are times in the vid when the other guys glance over at him, like WTF?
That drummer is straight killing it!
This is one of the greatest performances ever from anyone, Mark Knopfler was untouchable during this time. Next, please react to Tunnel of Love from the Alchemy concert.
Had the huge pleasure of hearing them in Glasgow many years ago, my ticket was paid for after the first song
You finally did it! The best drum performance in the history of live performances! Andy Stewart kills it!
Terry Williams was the drummer
Ha ha I combined his name with another Scot Al Stewart! Thanks! Give that man proper credit cause he is the man!
I first saw them on MTV 😊
5:33 Mark Knopler's reaction to Terry Williams on drums is priceless. Even the lead was like...DAMN!!!
Two on keyboards, one drum, one bass and two guitars....... Guy Fletcher is dancing trougout whole song..... Amazing atmosfere keyboard player
Tommy Mandel
Mark and his brother get all the lime light but my man Terry on the kit is the glue that held this band together. This is quite possibly the best drive-with-your-top down song ever recorded. I cant even begin to tell you how many speeding tickets I got to this song! All worth it!
His brother left the group long before this tour or album.
The band is absolutely flying on this track, yes it's quite obvious that all are having a complete ball. And the new section that was created for this live version at about the 12:20 mark is so simple chordwise yet incredibly dynamic and beautifully creative. The new guitar motif that Knopfler creates at about 13:12 is so amazing, especially in the extrapolations he applies to the original idea. No doubt about it, they were a fantastic band and he's a master, and this version is nothing short of genius. Luv ya Dire Straits..
Best version I heard ever. The drumming elevates everything. They were on their game that day. Something like 5000+ notes played by Mark I seem to recall
The great guitarist Chet Atkins developed a number of different sounds and chord combinations over his long career. In an interviewc he explained that one day he listened to a Dire Straits CD as he heard Mark was supposed to be good and recognized some of his own chords in the melody. He was impressed enough that he asked his manager to get word to Mark that he would like to meet him. Mark agreed and they met when Mark and band was touring in the US. They became close triends and Mark even bought the house next to Chet's to make visiting easier when Mark was in the States. They remained friends up to Chet's death. I saw a video of them doing a show together and as amazing as Mark is, Chet was even better.
Simply the greatest British rock band in the post-Beatles era. Their 'Alchemy' live album is easily the greatest live of the 80s in pop/rock music and I would recommend Tunnel of Love from that live to any human being.
Telegraph road from that album is unreal
Exactly right! All the instrumental begining is amazing
Knopfler is a music god!! 😇
I love this song! And the guitar solo lead to busted speakers in my car.
I love Dire Straits! My daily playlist!
To me one of the best guitarists on the world, and I probably is money for nothing. Thanks guys love your channel
Steve
That drummer though - wow
Telegraph Road from same concert.....EPIC
This the best live guitar solo ever
