This performance is widely considered one of the best live rock performances of all time. This drummer is amazing. Mark Knopfler is probably one of the top 10 guitarists in the world.
I looked up the best guitar players and I had never heard of the first 5.
@@elevenbucks5682 That's because they don't suck up to Rolling Stone Magazine lol.
Agree, Mark is right up there. Surely top 10.
@@peterrebelwithoutamenopaus6962. Chet Atkins bows to Mark.
@@tallwalls76 Knopfler is fantastic, but that might be going a bit far
As a drummer I have a lot of respect for these guys. The drummer is phenomenal, and you can see every band member is just really in the fun "jam zone", when you're so engrossed in the music it feels amazing, things are clicking exactly as they should, and you get into it so much it feels like you're on autopilot. Mark's guitar playing is without a pick, what my guitar buds call finger-picking. His playing abilitity is off the charts, and reminds me of the old banjo duels with Roy Clark. Veteran rockers, worthy of much respect!
Love this comment! I agree 100% - the drumming was spectacular. They all brought so much energy and the joy was contagious..... even in a video
Don't forget about Chet Atkins, who is known for his picking skills too.
TELEGRAPH ROAD FROM THE SAME CONCERT!
It sort of demonstrates where Keith Richards was coming from when he suggested that the last thing you want to do is get punched by a drummer !
@@MrTech226 and, as I suposse you perfectly know, he's one of the Mark's greatest influences. In fact, "Chet Atkins & Mark Knoplfer - Neck and Neck" is a gem.
The drummer decided he was going to town on this one. That is why they were smiling to each other near the start. He was responsible for driving up the performance to that level.
After hearing this version you will never be able to hear any other version. You will feel robbed like when they played this on the radio and cut off the ending...👹
I think it sucked compared to the studio version
Personally, live is to fast.
Great song no matter which version you liked!
I basically the Live aid version just much better quality.
Prefer the Wembley 85 version slightly more but this is still right up there.
As brilliant as Mark in on the guitar here, one cannot be anything but blown away by the drummer, absolute perfection there.
Terry Williams a great Welsh drummer.
His Father was in the Audience!!!! That's why he was on it!!!!
Williams was an absolute machine in this concert 🥺
Best drumming performance I’ve ever heard
Yeah, That too
The Drummer is a different level!!!
Yes he is!
Mark Knopfler is criminally underrated. A number of years ago, Rolling Stone Mag did a "Top 100 Guitarists of All Time". Mark Knopfler only played 44th.
I couldn't believe he only made top 50. No way.
Those lists are always just opinion based and you get some weird ones - Dick Dale is only 74, Kurt Cobain is at 73 but technically he isn't that great - fine songwriter and a ton of charisma but as a guitarist he isn't close to top 100, John Lennon is at 55 but famously when you isolate the Beatles it's clear that John was a great singer and only a serviceable guitarist and yet George Harrison doesn't get in - no George Young, No Malcolm Young, Noi Harry Vanda, No Tommy Emmanual, No Keith Richards, No Don Felder - I mean NO DON FELDER .... surely for Hotel California alone Felder gets in. There are so many others. They got good people to vote though so I cant complain too much but the list definitely leans a bit heavily towards lead-singer guitarists probably because they are easier to remember.
As far as I'm concerned, Mark should be top 10 at least. I would say top 5, but it gets difficult to compare, because of the different styles.
Balls, you really mean that idiots cant hear virtuoso , playing, and yet , he still has literally millions of fans,
I don think he is underated, i do know he has absolutely millions in his account,
he also seems happy,
That was the same list where Prince didn't even make the top 100. Rolling Stone had jumped the shark with me politically long before that but that was when they jumped the shark with their music critiques as well.
Rolling Stone is no longer a serious magazine, much less an authority on such. They just write fake stories and pay out massive damages for slander.
He is rated as one of the best guitarists of all time. fact
Around 05:15 when Terry Williams lays down those fills and Mark and John look at each other and say....this is going to be next level.
Two stunned faces!
I saw Mark Knopfler twice in 2019. Like many of us he's put on some weight and lost some hair, but Mark's hands are still mesmerizing. The only sad part of those concerts is that he didn't play this song.
I can watch this concert every day and never get bored.
Wow that's seldom that he don't play sultans.
Even the concert together with Emmylou Harris he did play Sultans it in Amsterdam.
@@GuitarPlayersFun The setlist was:
• Why Aye Man
• Corned Beef City
• Sailing to Philadelphia
• Once Upon a Time in the West
• Romeo and Juliet
• My Bacon Roll
• Matchstick Man
• Done With Bonaparte
• Heart Full of Holes
• She's Gone
• Your Latest Trick
• Postcards From Paraguay
• On Every Street
• Speedway at Nazareth
• Money for Nothing
• Brothers in Arms
• Going Home
I love Your Latest Trick and Brothers In Arms, of course, so it was great to hear those. A couple of songs from the most recent album - not the best ones, in my opinion.
Here's hoping for a new tour, with Sultans, Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road on the setlist.
@@markharris1125 I saw this tour. He can't physically play SoS anymore. Hands can't keep up.
Best drumming I've ever heard.
Hey ladies if you want to see another song from this concert, Telegraph Road will blow your mind like Sultans if not more. It also has an incredible instrumental ending of biblical proportions. Loving your channel. Cheers from Oz 😊🎸🎸
Thank you for the recommendation! We will be doing that song soon!
@@generationgapreacts Cheers 😊
One of the best guitar solos of all time and just as good no matter how often you hear it, absolutely love it.
Terry Williams playing his heart out for his Dad seeing him perform. The extra embellishments are so good
One of the greatest live performances ever recorded. Seeing them in 1985 was a concert highlight!
Best version EVER!! Mark's end solo is amazing & the drummer is amazing!
Anyway all in all....pure magic
Nothing beats this!!!!
Mark Knofler does not use a guitar pick...just fingers and thumbs...Terry Williams is the drummer
I would like to say that the drummer was amazing the level of talent in this group is stunning, this is the best version of this song, and musical genius, thank you for your reaction 🌹🌹🇬🇧
Mark Knopfler is one of the most prolific songwriters alive today. He's done film and TV soundtracks, big stadium shows, and once Dire Straits wound up, he went on to a massively successful solo career. He's such a great story teller with his songs, this one is about a real experience of walking into a pub in London and seeing a band in the corner trying to make a living from performing a few songs. Telegraph Road live is another good one, or Tunnel of Love.
It's no wonder his career lasted well beyond Dire Straits!
Yes! It’s all true. Sorry that he went American country music style but still one of the most successful Strait member. Songs like Going Home, and song for Sunny Liston are also gems ( recommended to see the videos about them in life ) !!
@@bubamaranovichok4901 We’ll have to check out those song. ❤️😃
@@generationgapreacts perhaps the most famous movie Mark Knopfler composed and performed the soundtrack to is the ever popular The Princess Bride.
@@jjc5407 I'd say Local Hero was a more famous soundtrack. Going Home is one of Marks most recognised and loved compositions.
This performance came after they had performed their hit hundreds of times, and polished it perfectly.
Sultans of Swing is my favorite Dire Straits song. This is a real treat because I've never seen it performed in concert live. They really did a terrific job. I'm glad this was suggested.
As you loved this, you'll also love 'Telegraph Road from the same Alchemy Live - the keyboard playing is fantastic
"Telegraph Road" from this same show is IMO one of the best live performances of a song ever, and the album "Love Over Gold" is great - It takes me to another place ever since 1982.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
A job like that wouldn't suck.
Shout out to the production crew. The filmography during a LIVE concert is incredible. 🤩
Mesmerising. Watched this maybe 50 time or so I think lol.
You can watch this again and again and so great watching them having such a blast. A set of musicians at the top of their game. Glad you've finally watched and enjoyed this
This was so amazing words can't explain
@@generationgapreacts the whole Alchemy concert/album is exceptional and there are no overdubs or other tricks to improve the recording. Those musicians really are as good as they sound.
Couldn't on click on this reaction fast enough. If you play guitar every day for years your fingers build up callouses. That super strong drummer is the great Terry Williams. Now, do yourself a favor and listen to "Telegraph Road" from the same show, you won't be sorry.
Doing that one next!
I saw Dire Straits in Wellington, NZ on 4th March, 1986. 50,000 people at Athletic Park... amazing experience.
Mark Knopfler wrote the words, music, arranged it, sang it and played his guitar as only he can.
All this masterpiece came from his genius alone.
TELEGRAPH ROAD from this concert next please, again all from Mr Knopfler.
You won't regret it.
Well done ❤️
Mark was in a London pub and there was a not too good band playing, they called themselves the sultans of swing in their intro to the audience. If you listen carefully you can hear his description of the band members.
In his song ‘Money For Nothing’ he was in a tv and electrical goods store. The people working in the store were making comments about the band who were on the tv screen on MTV. Mark gets some of his songs by observing what’s going on around him.
His ‘Brothers in Arms’ is a great but sad song.
Drum Size Question...Most of the shots of the drummer are using a wide angle lens. That makes the drumms in the foreground look big and the ones behind him look small !
An epic live performance by an incredible band. Not a weak link in the bunch! Thanks for the reaction. Mark Knopfler (lead singer) is one of the best guitarist of all time.
Great reaction you two ! You're both beautiful !
This was one of the best concert experiences ever, up there with Bruce Springsteen and Pink Floyd, real epic "unless you were there you haven't lived gigs" the guys are real musicians, there are more layers in the live version but the are not studio enhanced like many of today's artists you get the voices pure and raw, they are exquisitely talented musicians and as for Mark, one of the truly great singer/songwriters/guitarists of our time,(he has written and recorded film scores too). The keyboards are all set to different "keys" and effects to keep from changing settings during the performance. They loved to entertain their fans and always appear to appreciate them.
I have never seen this Alchemy version before. They are really jamming! It's so awesome! Terry on the drums was rockin' it!! They're great anyway but they're putting on their A+++++ performance here. Thanks for listening to everyone. I really enjoyed this!
It's great to see someone as amazing on the drums! The focus is typically on the singer and guitarists, but I wanted more scenes with Terry! They all brought it 110%
@@generationgapreacts Definitely! Thanks again for reacting to this video!!
@@generationgapreacts Hey, that was great and I think you Ladies have got a fun, winning format😀 THANKS for listening and responding Girls 😇
I bought my first record in London in 1960, just a mere 62 years ago and I have never been so impressed by a Drummer before and I had never considered your salient point about keeping his arms high. Wow !!.... Although not from London, they built their fanbase up by playing The Pubs and Clubs of South East London and went on from there. MONEY FOR NOTHING-Official Video is great. ENJOY. From South East London..
@@Isleofskye Great suggestion! Cheers to you in south east london, thank you for watching ☺️
That was phenomenal!!! Wow! I had never heard this version! These are incredible musicians. Guitar playing off the charts. Drummer inserting beats in between beats. Keyboardist reaching for multiple keyboards like Yanni! Thank you for reacting to this!
Thank you Eric, as always! ❤😊
@@generationgapreacts ❤️
Two keyboardists - Alan Clark and dancing Tommy Mandel. Both as good as they get.
I didn’t go to this gig but a good friend of mine did plus another 2 here in England
John told me , the band came out 1 at a time and just started playing and they basically spent the first 15mins jamming, then Mark stopped it and said . Right that’s us warmed up now let’s get the show started.
Marks Dad bought him is first guitar for £50 probably 2weeks wages for him back then , it was a red and white strat copy and right handed
Mark believe it or not is left handed and found it easier to play the cords that way and taught himself to finger pick , if you notice his left hand is finger picking too at times as he his doing the complicated sections
There is a great TV program where Mark explains the choices of the guitars used on each album, such a humble guy
Sounds like an amazing show! Wish I could have seen them perform live
This version is great live another great live performance is Telegraph Road or the haunting anti war song Brothers in Arms
It's one of the best, and most uplifting live performances that I've ever seen...bravo!
Rumour has it the drum kit was taken out on life support after the show. 😉
DS are actually better live than some of their studio albums. Pitch & note perfect with a heavy accent on just jamming for fun. One of my favourite bands & the other comments about the drummer (Terry Williams) are bang on, he added a harder edge to DS when he joined the band from their almost softer earlier stuff.
master guitarist alert! Enjoy
Took me about 3 yrs to get down that right hand technique Mr.Knopfler has
Is it Travis Picking or something else entirely?
I've never nailed it but I'm satisfied with my take. Even the great Tommy Emmanuel encourages anchoring the ring and index fingers, which came naturally. Anyway I'm a Bassist woho could never hold onto a pick. Classical Guitarists and Banjo Players probably have and easier chance on nail it
One word….PHENOMENAL 👏👏👏👏👏 Now to check out more songs from the same Alchemy Live tour. Tunnel of Love is brilliant 😊
I love Tunnel of Love!
@@lindascott6902 Tunnel of love has the best instrumental outro of any song ever in my opinion, just incredible 😊
Mark Knopfler is one of the Great Guitar Pickers, Dires Straits is Class Act of Blues and Classic Rock.
The other blonde guitarist is his brother
"I could watch this over and over again ..." I watch the video or any reaction video at least 5 times a week. Never get sick of it, it's just purely epic.
Thank you so much!!!
Telegraph road off alchemy is just as good, in fact everything off alchemy is awesome.
in 1983 it was the concert and when I was born
9:45 Not only is Mark Knopfler playing with his fingers...but he is playing with his weaker hand. He is left-handed but plays right-handed (apparently, because his sister told him too). And at that speed! Another fun fact: Mark also wrote/performed the music to the film The Princess Bride. Unbelieveable talent
For live performances this reminds me in certain ways of Rush’s live version of Xanadu from their Exit Stage Left concert.
Two completely different songs and two very different performances, but there’s a connection between them that I can’t quite put my finger on in spite of having seen both performances literally dozens and dozens of times.
Virtuosity, big drum kits, infectious band synergy, same era?
John Ilsley's playing a Wal, and Geddy used an identical Wal a couple years later for a few years?
Thanks for this....Mark Knopfler one of the best guitar players ever.....Dire Straits were great 😘
Not one of the best but definitely the most unorthodox.
@@glenchapman3899 nope, definitely one of the best. His talent is off the charts.
@@glenchapman3899 I agree. I'm a guitarist myself. However I could never jam with my fingers like he does! That is definitely unorthodox playing with a guitar! That takes a certain skill!
Great job ladies. Check out the drummer.
Glad you took the time to watch this undoubtedly incredible performance. It must be amazing to reach the level as a musician to stand on stage and be so comfortable, experienced and skilled that your can just jam almost without limit. I bet that feeling is like a drug.
Thats better the full version....hooooray
This song isn't the best vocal performance, but the instrumental performance more than makes up for it. The drummer's groove is on point, and Knopfler's guitar playing is perfection.
What people don't realise is that Mark is left handed but plays right handed. Think there are a couple of videos of him actually playing left handed.
The rhythm guitarist is Mark's brother.
Rumour has it that the drummer had to go and get his arms reattached when he came off stage.
An amazing performance by all. A masterclass for for people starting out in the music industry.
Brothers in Arms is worth a listen - very poignant and sad. Also, more light hearted, is Twisting by the Pool. A holiday song.
Terry Williams could sure handle a drum set!
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists, top 10, right behind Paul Stanley of KISS and Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols.
NOT keyboards---4 pianos on one side, and 4 organs on the other side of the drums. The drummer, Williams, was new here, (as was Mark's brother who left the group after this) was in a full body cast in his younger years when he strengthened his arm muscles by walking on his hands. He was amazing! (as is Mark's picking skills, having no formal guitar lessons). Lovers of music, they surely do entertain joy-fully!
Hi Barbara, WOW… that’s amazing! Thank you for the information! 😊
The blond guy on the other guitar is not Mark's brother David, he had left 3 years earlier . That was Hal Lindes, an American.
I always liked their Syltans of swing at the 1992 "On the night" show better. They also had an epic version of Local hero at that show.
This is the quintessential performance of this song and one of the best performances of any song captured on video.
Very Well Said.
Among my top Live performances.: Gary Moore x 2 -Firstly: "I've Still Got The Blues For You"-Paris and, also, Gary Moore: "Parisienne Walkways"-Montreux.
Pink Floyd-"Comfortably Numb" -PULSE. Led Zeppelin-"Stairway To Heaven"-Madison Square Garden and,of course,this 😀
Mark never gets his due as one of the best guitarists to ever play, he plays with his fingers only, no pics. Dire Straits is awesome, from their first album I bought in Naples Italy in 1978 when deployed with the US Navy, in the Navy exchange I bought a Pioneer SX3900 with a Technics turntable and the 24 band Pioneer graphic equalizer and a pair of JBL studio monitor speakers and they sounded SICK at 240 watts in a small crew quaters.
Great song..great band..great reaction..love it..thanks!
Woohoo thanks Ronald!
Check out "Romeo & Juliet" from the same 'Alchemy' performance.
you should check out the alchemy version of telegraph road, equally as good
Your mother is really attentive to you hun you can tell she so proud💪😊 anyway just subbed your channel love and peace from the UKone more thing wow wow wow
Regarding the drum size, there are a number of styles and size most. Professional drummers use a concert series in large venues. The Finnish band "Nightwish" use some of the largest Pearl drums I have seen, due to the size of some of the venues they play.
Loved your reaction to the greatest live performance of all time. I was there that night. The crowd was awed!
the song always had a certain Bob Dylan kind of feel, talking all the way through, except on certain chorus or hook line parts. I could hear a young Bob Dylan talking all the way through this. Knopfler's guitar playing was always super , slick and excellent on this, as masterpiece.
You'd love Dire Straits "Skateaway". It's fantastically haunting.
Try brothers in arms live at the Mandela concert, if you feel like crying 😄😄
The drums on this live performance are just epic ❤ this
A cul-de-sac of keyboards.
I think you guys are ready for the greatest live performance of all time... Dire Straits - Telegraph Road (Alchemy Live). The keyboard player reaches God level.
I love this version so much I'm almost disappointed when I hear the studio version. Awesome talent on display.
This was released in the U.K. and was the absolute antithesis of punk, which was prevalent at the time, but has become a classic!
Telegraph road from the same concert 10/10 even better than the studio version, It's the amalgamation of every dire straits style/songs combined into one beautiful story about the humble beginnings of Detroit to its desperate endings... The song talks about rise and fall of civilization. Not really fall, but rise of a civilization, industrialization and shatter of a man’s dream. How industrialization can cause a man’s dream to fall.
In that track you'll see Alan Clarke (the piano/keyboardist) playing at his best 100/10
What about the drummer what a bloody legend 👏 fantastic
Agreed! Incredible
You really should listen to "Friday On My Mind" by the Easybeats - Guitar George & Harry's names were inspired by Georige Young and Harry Vanda the guitarists from that band and they went on to produce music including the first 5 albums for George's younger brothers Angus & Malcolm whose band did pretty well (AC/DC). Friday On My Mind's guitar riffs sound simple but they are actually insanely hard progressions - Knopfler appreciated how good those guys were.
Go back to studio or other live versions. The main difference is in Alchemy live, the drummer is ON FIRE! ... easily playing quads (4 strokes per beat) where he was he was playing 2 per beat on other versions. That kind of energy drove the performance to a higher level.
Fantastic performance! Mark Knopfler just looks so effortless when he plays.
To make it even better, I've read that he's one of the kindest, most genuine people you'll ever meet.
So cool that at 5:59 the keys play a foreshadowing of the new theme added soon after in the guitar solo
Please have a look at the live version of "Tunnel of Love" from the "Alchemy" Tour- You will love it!
Mark and the guys were on fire that night- I know, I was there!
Ladies, if you want to react to a really top guitar player, Tina S Through the Fire and Flames, or Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata You will be totally blown away. I look forward to your reaction to either.
hi ,the tall chap on the left is marks brother playing bass.on one comment, it said it is like a drug listening to mark and the boys, and that is how it affects me.i play it every day, anyway, glad you liked that verson, stay safe
You've commented below that you love to see the drums being featured. I urge you to check out Fanny - Blind Alley, specifically the Beat Club session here on YT. A fantastic all female group that really pushed boundaries for the gals in the first half of the 70s. In the suggestion you see Alice really plying her drum craft and the others are equally proficient.
That's an amazing suggestion! Thank you
Mark sounds like he's playing a banjo...amazing...
That is definitely the best version of this song. I would say even better than the recorded version. It's just so ALIVE Thanks. I have to say if you like guitarists, you should react to Tommy Emmanuel's "Classical Gas". I really do think you'll like it. I have enjoyed quite few of your reactions and enjoyed them all. Thanks.
Thank you for watching Noel, and great suggestion! That's going on the list
So cool to see you appreciating the skill of these musicians!
Great reaction girls; you can pick up the whole Alchemy Live performance. Telegraph Road is superb as is Romeo & Juliet. Also look out Brothers in Arms; another great track but with a very deep meaning. Bless you both 🥰
Thank you Ivan! We will definitely check out those other songs from Alchemy live
The drummer is Terry Williams. I heard his parents were backstage and that this was the first time they'd watched him play in front of a live audience.
Great reaction, girls!
They play Sultans faster live, its much better!
I was there at Hammersmith Odeon , London in July 1983. I was there, just turned 18 and 39 years later this is still the best.
I thought this was normal!
The musician who stood out was Terry Williams on the drums, I've seen good drummers in my time (Phil Collins, Chester Thompson, Charlie Watts, Mark Brzezicki and more) and Terry's performance was the best.
They were ll on top of it.
The whole place was rocking, I was on the balcony and it was shacking, we thought it was coming down!
As you say, all of the band Mark Knopfler - guitar, vocals, Alan Clark - keyboards, John Illsley - bass guitar, backing vocals, Hal Lindes - guitar, backing vocals, Terry Williams - drums were world class.
We knew they were good, it was amazing.
Now, ladies, its compulsory, you have to watch the Alchemy version of Telegraph Road, it was the encore
That's so amazing that you saw them in 1983! What an experience that must have been. We will definitely be listening to Telegraph Road... we are hooked
Well the guitar and drums sued Mark and Terry for abuse
This has got to be one of the most iconic rock performances in history
Back when humans made the music!
Great choice. Incredible live show. Mark is incredible as usual but the drummer Terry Williams put this one over the top.
Wonderful reaction to the greatest live performance on the internet! For another classic live performance, please enter the Tori Amos rabbit hole with a reaction to "Winter" (Live, VEVO)
