    It's painful to see the proud name of MG thrown in the mud. Decades ago I thoroughly enjoyed over 100,000 miles of going all over the USA, in an MGB (and before that a TR3). Just seems that today they don't make cars that are that much fun and I must ask why. To get that level of fun today I have to buy German, at ridiculous expense, or Italian which is even worse expense.

    I remember at Politecnico of Milano the lessons on design held by Marco Zanuso in the early 80s'.
    He was a great architect/designer responsabile of the Olivetti's design at that time (besides Brionvega, Cassina, OLuce and so on).
    He often mentioned and showed slides on the evolutive design accompanied by several inventions of the P4, that he had owned.
    I remember when they were presented the 2000/3500 of the sixties and of the seventies. A class apart.
    Sad story.
    I already didn't like bmw, after that less than less

      Lee Englandland And pissing money where it need not have been spent. I have an MG ZS and love MG Rover, but they didn't help themselves! The Phoenix 4 nearly saved them but they got ripped off by the Chinese for the naming rights and pulled out of huge funding at the last minute and just took the brand.

    So sad, not for these Chinese cars put together at longbridge, but looking at this once great factory now derelict / demolished and the loss of Rover once the pride of British manufacturing. I owned many Rovers, Montegos, 200, 2 x 600s and 2 x 75s all were very reiliable I'd have another 75 tomorrow such a lovely looking car.

  • @studiocalder818
    @studiocalder818 5 лет назад +2

    It's incredible that English people still buy bmw after what they combined with the poor beloved Rover.
    To drown marque and factories to take possession of the brands they could re-use, and sell off the others without permitting that someone other resuscitate them by holding back the brand names.
    Incredible this sneaky typical German conduction.
    ...quite same mercedes with Chrysler group.

  • @philipjohnson8377
    @philipjohnson8377 6 лет назад +9

    Well typical Britain moans bout an empty factory when it's too late.. were all to blame with the state of the industry today. Blair's government should of nationalised the factory till a suitable buyer came along. In the contract make it official whoever took it over should look after industry workforce etc for so many years.. however it's lot Rover fault with bad management with old car design and crap distribution. Bmw crippled the business by not investing in new models in the 90s due they were only interested in land rover and mini. Everyone too negative in this country. This company could of made a comeback and I think they're still market for the rover name preferably under JLR with jaguar becoming too common lower cheaper mass produced volume car like rover could fit in there. A real shame what's happened to longbridge. It will all be houses MG will totally move to China. Well that's what it like Britain needs to wake up and finally realise that industries like this shouldn't be raped and abused and British people jobless. It's a disgrace what's happened

    • @grahamariss2111
      @grahamariss2111 5 лет назад

      There was no point in nationalising it, as there would never have been a buyer, the market for outdated car factories is very limited. BMW invested heavily in the Business, the 75 and the signed of 55 as well as the Mini and a New Range Rover and the Freelander production facility, they would have done more, but with it costing 300 million a year in loses and no interest from UK Government in helping them redevelop Longbridge (request for 20 million to deal with the legacy of contamination on the site) they had little choice but to pull the plug.

    • @paulbroderick8438

      I could rant, however, suffice to say that Leyland should have stuck to bus and truck production. Leyland making Rovers, give me a break!
      Longbridge was renowned for lay off's and strikes.

    • @grahamariss2111
      @grahamariss2111 5 лет назад

      @@paulbroderick8438 Longbridge was a British Motor Holdings (BMH) factory originating from Austin via BMC. Rover was based in Solihull and at its take over by Leyland was highly profitable with its Land Rover and P5 and P6 cars. Leyland's downfall was to take over BMH, whilst BMH was vulnerable to fluctuations in the volatile UK market because it needed large volunes of Mini and ADO16 sales due to their tight margins and failure of its larger car the ADO17 and unpromising Maxi in development for the more profitable market segments, it did have a strong global presence and at the forefront of space efficiency and suspension technology. Sadly Leyland failed to solve the problems and squandered the legacy with the Marina, Allegro and Princess and also killed their own Triumph and Rover with the Stag, TR7 and SD1. The Range Rover and XJ6/12 both predated Leyland envolvement and it was testament to their greatness that both designs outlived British Leyland and BL. Leyland also killed their truck and bus division at the same time with their flawed AEC and Leyland monoblock engines which destroyed their reputation for reliability and quality.

      The demise of this industry was self inflicted . The unions had a strangle hold over the company i think the main union man was Derek Robinson he was a communist nick named red robbo he led 523 walkouts in a 30 month period .
      I remember a picture in the paper or tv the staff had built beds in the racking , poor workmanship and standards where rife the vehicles they built weren't fit for purpose.
      Michael Edwards the chairman sacked Red Robbo a motion for a strike for his reinstatement was defeated 14.000 votes against 600 in favour the workers had had enough of him, trouble was it was to late.

    • @grahamariss2111
      @grahamariss2111 5 лет назад +1

      @@stevewilson6390 To blame it all on Derek Robinson is too simplistic, he was anyway only a power at Longbridge so we can't lay the blame on him for Canley, Cowley, Speke, Swindon, Bath Gate etc. Not that he can be excused. However the reality was that before the Allegro their was hope that it coukd existvasca volume manufacturer after the Allegro missed the market and with it went BMC European sales net work, no matter what the Unions or Management did it was finished as a volume manufacturer. Because no matter what they built, they could never have sold them in enough volume to compete with the major European manufacturers, because they no longer had the sales channels. VAG was in a similar situation in the early 70s, but they had the Polo and Golf, Peugeot in the early 80s and they had the 205. BMC had been kept alive by the Mini and BMC1100/1300, the failure to replace them with successful cars made all this inevitable.

      I don't agree, I had a 2005 MG ZT 1.8 turbo, brilliant car, I believe they were developed by BMW when they owned Rover, as certain parts were straight off a BMW such as the touch screen radio sat nav etc
      Only the MG was a fraction of the cost of an over priced BMW!! 😳
