  • as promised here is the UK scrappage scheme video!!! let me first start off by saying this was very hard to walk away from. Being a classic car enthusiast it was pretty heartbreaking to see all that potential Saturday to rot in eventually become complete scrap. Why are we still here? I have no idea it's something I would love to find out maybe the government knew these ones were going to be valuable in a few years or maybe they're just the last one's to go through the crusher, let me know what you think in the comments below.
    A car scappage scheme was introduced in Germany on 13 February 1999 and then in France and Italy. Following a record fall in car sales in the UK and associated redundancies accompanied by lobbying by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders on behalf of UK car manufacturers with support from the UK scheme was introduced in the 2009 United Kingdom Budget on 22 April 2009 by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling. The scheme was supported by Lord Mandelson, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, and Geoff Hoon, the Secretary of State for Transport.
    In September 2009 a further £100m was made available to the scheme which was extended until the end of February 2010.
    The scheme had been due to run out of money during October and varies bodies including Engineering Employers' Federation, Uniteand the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders had lobbied for an extension which was announced by Lord Mandelson at the Labour party conference.
    On 5 February 2010 the scheme was extended by a month to run until the end of March 2010 or until the funds were exhausted. In the same month the government announced a £230m 'Plug-in car Grant' scheme to provide a £5,000 grant towards the purchase of plug-in electric cars - the scheme will start in January 2011. A separate scheme, 'Plugged-In Places' will provide some 11,000 charging points in selected cities over the next three years.

      There's no way I could leave those cars sitting like that. I am a law abiding citizen but these cars deserve better than this. It's probably a pick n pull parts place but the bodies on these cars look like they are ready for restoration. If I could win the lottery it wouldn't pay me to find a place like this because I'd buy everything, even the property.

      Just like in the USA, the only reason these schemes were made is for billionaires to profit and the economy to rise. Just like in America, the people buying these new cars at inflated interest loans could not afford them and defaulted on the loans and the cars got repossessed anyway, leading them back to the used car market. All it did was make common cars exceedingly rare and more expensive.

      These types of vehicles that are manufactured and is waiting to be sold, purchased by buyers, needs to be computed, inventory management should be conducted/performed in order for them to be sold, by their respective manufacturers, and to clear up space. They are created/manufactured to provide employment, and all the necessary procedures needs to be completed for them not to be declared a loss, since it is too costly for those to be declared a loss. It should be sold as is where is, and declared with proper documentation for further details for claims, insurance by the insurers. Those are to be liquidated for them to be cleared in their respective company makers books.

  • @Twmpa
    @Twmpa Год назад +3

    On so many levels, scrappage was a scandal. If you remember, cars were legally required to be roadworthy at the point of trading in to qualify for the scheme and around 400,000 went through the scheme. The vast majority of these would have made perfectly respectable used cars. I remember a 2 year period back then when my local scrapyard was chock full of good roadworthy cars, a lot of them with in-date tax discs.
    Also, for a man who claims an entusiasm for JDM imports, he ignored and walked past a Toyota Sera, a pretty little car whose gullwing(ish) doors were the direct inspiration for those on Gordon Murray's McLaren F1, without even mentioning it. Only around 15,000 were ever produced over a 6 year period and they are now incredibly rare.

    The whole scrapage scheme is a farce and there isn't any scientific evidence that shows it benefits the environment. A new car will use the equivalent to 50 barrels of oil (at 35 gallons per barrel) which would keep my 30 year old land rover defender (470,000 miles on the clock) in diesel for nearly 4 years (at 15000 miles per year). The intended design life for nearly all European cars is only 8 years and we produce over 17 million of them every year. You also have to take in to consideration that modern cars are harder to recycle with complex alloys and carbon steels as well as huge amounts of plastics and non recyclables . Just think of all those touch screens, soft close door automated tailgaters 20 speaker entertainment systems, air bags and whole host of other pointless (may be not the air bags) crap that that increase the carbon footprint of modern vehicles !

So that 08 /09 plater focus that replaced a R reg escort. 10 years later that 08 /09 plater focus will be now sitting on a racking in a scrap yard or even bailed. While the escort it replaced is still here in the field.

    The scrappage scheme was an awful idea that got rid of a lot of retro gems that people didn’t realise what they had, they released a list a few years back of what was scrapped and it was heartbreaking.
    I think those ones left are definitely being stripped for spares, I would bet others were too before being crushed.

    • @malcwalker8565
      @malcwalker8565 6 лет назад +25

      It's a strange one really. It was good in a way, it definitely gave a boost to the UK car industry. Of course the downside is these classics but you have to ask if they had stayed on the road would they have survived this long anyway? Most of them perhaps would have just ended up at a scrapyard anyway. In a strange way, by placing them in the scrappage scheme they have oddly saved them as a time capsule of sorts. If only they could be restored. I bet they'd sell them easy enough if they held an auction. But the VIN's will be wiped now and down as officially scrapped so I guess that isn't going to happen.
      Diesel cars also became much more popular after the scrappage scheme and now they have decided diesel is the devil. So maybe we'd have been better off with all those petrols on the road instead.

Chances are they would rather crush them for metal(to make there money) rather then sell the cars for less then what they would make out of them.

    - Only for export. Imagine how many foreign collectors or dealers would be dying to get their hands on some of the cars/ parts. US dealers make tons of money annually exporting used cars to Lain America and Africa!

    • @lepayen
      @lepayen 6 лет назад +3

      No shit, I could probably walk through there and put together many perfectly working cars out of what's there. I wonder how much it would cost for the whole lot at scrap value. Currently iron is only about 2 cents per pound in Canada and we don't use pennies anymore so unless you have over 3 pounds you get nothing and 2,000 pounds of iron would only get you $20. So each vehicle at scrap value is really not worth much at all. The lead in a car battery is probably worth more than the rest of the car in scrap value.

This is happening by design. These major flaws are literally built into the engines so you need to take them to the dealership often to be fixed. If you want a reliable car, buy a 90's Japanese car. They're practically indestructible.

      Another car that is getting very rare in the USA and the UK is the retro styled chrysler pt cruiser car, I have seen a lot go to end of life as they call it here (parked in storage yards awaiting monthly scrap collection) as the spare parts were difficult to buy in the UK, they were more or less withdrawn, and I have only seen 2 in the US myself, am sure there are lots but they are not a common car anymore and have been scarce since about 2009, many at the time thought that they were ugly but now the tune has changed and they are seen as fashionable due to their quirky 1930's inspired shape and big chrome radiator grill, they are rare so they have become valuable and people want to own them again..

    The problem is they have all been officially scrapped so ZERO chance of getting one re- registered . Government does not want these cars back on the road. Heartbreaking to us car fans. Rather they got rid of them than taunting us with the graveyard. Would have them all,no question. There seems to be no chance of even getting any parts from them legitimately? Apparently they waiting for scrap price to go up and then it's certificate of destruction for them. Tears.

    • @wanteds13

      Can't we export them to The Netherlands?

    • @andrewwilson8317
      @andrewwilson8317 6 лет назад +2

      Thomas1984 sadly no. The cars are government property after the scrappage scheme payment was made. A certificate of destruction for each car has to be issued. All the paperwork has been cancelled so no chance of exporting or re-registering. Painful for car enthusiasts but really the only thing you can do is put them out of your mind. The only way o get bits is illegally . Many many people have enquirer about these cars,nobody has ever had any joy!

    Great video. I think we share similar views on cars with the sounds of it, I bet you'd be great to have a drink with and chat cars. My first car was a white Vauxhall Nova SR, an old 'D' reg, was 12 years old when I bought it. I then bought a Nova that was originally a 1.2 but previous owners put in a 1.6 astra engine, that thing absolutely flew (oddly it had a 4 speed gearbox and I think it was dangerous as well), you could set off in 3rd lol. Man it was different times back then, cars had more character. I also had a 309 GTi 1.9. That was the fastest thing I'd ever driven at that time, was like a missile and remember paying something stupid like 2 grand to insure it. I bought it when it had already done over 120,000 miles and one day I floored it out of the local bowling alley car park and got a box full of neutrals and bits of the gearbox falling out on the road, and that was the end of that as I sold it for peanuts to someone who towed it away, RIP. I don't know what I was thinking but I bought a Ford Ka after that. I later owned a Saxo VTR, a 206 GTi and a Clio Sport 172 Cup but they were like the cars at the beginning of a new age of car ownership and they didn't really have that same feel as the oldies, although the Clio had an edgy rawness to it. My dad also owned a mk5 Escort XR3i which was boss, that RS (was it a real RS? it had that replica feel to it but could be wrong, guess you wouldn't know without popping the bonnet, if an engine is even still in it) but yeah that reminded me of it. Good times.
    It's crazy how much these classic cars are worth now, you sometimes see old mk 1 Golf GTi's for sale for close to £30,000. I saw a Nova GSi on Auto Trader a few months back and that was close to £10,000.
    I never owned a German car until about 5 years ago when I bought an Audi A3 and that reignited my love for proper cars again. Something about the German build quality grabbed me again, stirred that passion I had back in the Nova and Peugeot GTi days so last year I thought what the hell and bought myself a new mk 7 Golf 'R', which is a proper weapon. Owning a Golf after owning all those other cars makes me wonder if I'd just bought a mk1 or mk2 Golf back at the start, would I ever have driven anything else? VW/Audi for life now!
    So I've just re-read what I posted above and realised I wrote a bit of an essay, hope you didn't mind. Seeing all those cars just got me thinking and reminiscing. I'd love to buy an old mk1 Golf now and do it up, drive it on weekends. Ahh, cars hey. What we gonna do when they ban petrol and diesel!?
    Cheers, Malc.

      There is no way some of them were involved in the scrappage scheme the values of some of them would have far outstripped that of the offers under the scrappage scheme. Especially, the G Wagon and the 1.6gti's. The w140s would have unlikely have been that cheap then either to be out into the scrappage scheme unless they were really early W140's as anything later than 96 would have been worth quite a bit back then.

    • @colmfarrel4742
      @colmfarrel4742 5 лет назад

      @@bendude6748 That wouldn't have been the case for a G Wagon or s600 w140 their values at the time would have been over 10,000 pound. The maximum the schemes were offering at the time was 7,000 off a new purchase. The 1.6 gti's were also very collectable back then and were worth a significant amount. A G Wagon is one of the best cars when it comes to holding it's value.

    The race car parts at the end are from the MSV experience centre which operates there. You can see the race circuit to the left of your drone shots. The front end was from the Palmer Jaguar, two seater open cockpit sports prototype. There was also a single seater nose cone, Formula Palmer Audi like an F3 car with an Audi engine. Couldn’t tell you about the quarter panel. My guess is the off road track was or s linked to that as some kind of off road experience.
