Date of flight: 03/02/2023
History:
A Committee of Management for the hospital was formed in 1804 and construction began in the Cowcaddens area of Glasgow in 1810.It was originally opened as the Glasgow Lunatic Asylum in 1814, but after a royal charter was obtained, it became the Glasgow Royal Lunatic Asylum in 1824.
In the 1830s it was decided to commission a new hospital in the Gartnavel area of Glasgow. The new facility, which was designed by Charles Wilson in the Gothic Revival style, allowed segregation by patients' gender and social class. The new hospital opened in 1843.
The hospital first published the Gartnavel Minstrel, the earliest example of a publication written and edited by hospital patients, in 1845. The facility became the Glasgow Royal Mental Hospital in 1931 and, after major additions in 1939 and 1959, it became the Gartnavel Royal Hospital in 1963.
Prominent clinicians who worked at the hospital included Sir David Henderson, who was physician-superintendent at the hospital from 1921 to 1932, Donald Ewen Cameron, who worked at the hospital during the 1920s and R. D. Laing, who worked at the hospital for a number of years during the 1950s.

The Gartnavel General Hospital opened on the same site in December 1972. A programme of modernisation at the Gartnavel Royal Hospital was completed in 2007, enabling the 117-bed hospital building to serve a significant population of Glaswegian inpatients, along with mental health facilities at Stobhill Hospital and Parkhead Hospital. The modernisation cost £19 million and was said to be "the most modern and innovative building of its kind in the UK" at the time of opening. The 117-bed facility entirely comprised individual rooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom facilities. A community café and family room were also created in the hospital.

Need these places back open too many nutters about .
I worked there in the mid/late 1970's, awful seeing the state of dereliction. Had some beautiful interior areas, including a Concert Hall where we Registered Nurses were presented with our Registration Certificates and Hospital Badges, magnificent "Arts and Crafts" furnishings...of course not all areas were so attractively decorated! Legacy of the pre-NHS days, when the hospital was divided into two "classes," one for the Private (paying) patients (with the lovely interior decoration) and one for the non fee paying ie "ordinary" classes, where the decoration and facilities were more...basic. Used to have extensive, beautiful Rose Gardens, looked after by the patients as part of their therapy. Had lovely walks with benches to sit on amongst the roses...those days long gone now. 😢
What a place! Must have been horrific for the patients.
I worked in it. The surroundings weren't any worse than other old hospitals (Leverndale Towerview Unit, Victoria Infirmary etc) and the nursing care was excellent. So it may not have been up to modern standards but the care was top class.
Awesome video 👍 i work there the roof has fallen in more past few days
Thanks, shame it has just been left to rot
@@JH-drones agreed it’s a beautiful building
Are there any pictures of the interior? Any books or videos of what it was like?
This disgraceful waste of an asset. The NHS should be ashamed. There must have been alternative uses for the building and gardens
not just the roof last month found a way inside and saw that the every floor had fallen even parts were it was slowly breaking into the basement
What a pity to leave buildings to just rot. These buildings could house the homeless, and people in need. There is a shortage of homes to live in. Can't rent or buy. This is not only in the UK, but in the EU. Maybe cheaper to renovate, than to begin from scratch.
🎯 Architectural Vandalism 🏴☠️’s… destroyed 👀 …
Would cost more to make habitable than new building
Was a student nurse there for 9wks in 1984 so sad to see it in such a sorry state, remember going up the tower to help patients get ready for breakfast !
Brilliant title .
WOW awesome video :)
Thanks!
Scotland has more than a good share of these old " mental hospitals " . It is strange that there are all these large buildings, often complete with a lot of land, yet there is a big housing shortage, surely any reclaimed stone would be worth £millions
Scottish Baronial style I believe. Stunning buildings. Now "surplus to requirements". Somebody's gonna make some money here....
We have mental hospital now the houses of Parliament lol
It’s an eyesore bulldoze the thing it must have been a hell hole for the patients.
I think it is listed
You just know that valuable land is earmarked for luxury apartments.
Like Leverndale was.
