Great review man and even better all around video. I like your style a lot, too many people have too much "fake" energy in their vids. Subscribed! P.S. I found your video because I finally made my camera choice between Canon 80D Sony a6500 and the G85. G85 wins because of reviews like yours and because I save a few hundred bucks.
How is the autofocus? Im debating between the 80d g85 and a6500. The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on the g85 yet is idk how hard it is to deal with the autofocus.
@@emperadorchavez723 thanks that's great to hear! I want to make travel videos with my friends and reorder my self doing projects. It's so hard to chose haha
This is the first video I've seen from your channel, and I'm impressed! Very informative and very well put together. Also I love that you respond to most questions from your videos!
Awesome review! Wish this had come up in my feed when I was tearing my hair out over this camera versus a few others. Ended up with the G85, incredibly happy, and you nailed all my favorite points!
Thats a very fair and useful review of the G85, a great value/spec camera. I've just got the 12-60 kit lens to pair up with my GX80 and GH3, and it's really good, amazing for the money. M43 is such a good all round format, my work FX Nikon kit is beginning to seem ridiculous for the spec it offers. I think 2018 will be the year to downsize, and smile.
i love the way you commented on what just crossed you mind, didn't like those who pretend to ACT like a PRO; family-talk-vlog-style, that's the word Cheers
Nice review. I think one big advantage of recording in 4K and rendering to 1080p is being able to crop shots and it still be in full res where if you do that on a 1080p source your quality of your crop shots really go down.
+Fun With The Bugs Ahh thanks! And that's a great point - perhaps I'll find myself using that more in the future. The other benefit I didn't even mention is the 4K photo feature which is pretty impressive, allowing you to take 8mp stills while recording. Only missed a few of the key selling points... ☺
Great review, James! No worries that it was a bit "late" in the game...still highly valid! I got too, and love it. Just wanted to add about shooting in 4K...I use it to have a bigger canvas to work with in post for my videos. Use Ken Burns to zoom in and out and do pans. It also means that if your framing was not perfect, you can crop out unwanted stuff. I love 4K as a shooting/editing format. Then I also upload in 1080p.
Great camera, shooting in RAW and processing the shot in software improves the image quality quite dramatically, so I will be shooting mostly in RAW on this. Video performance is great and usability and handling is nice despite the obvious flaw of the mic input blocking the vari angle LCD.
Hi James. I really enjoyed your thoughts of the camera and your way og editing it all together. One of the few videos I watch and afterwards is looking forward to seeing the next video you upload. Good job! Regards just east of the UK.
Really enjoyed this review. I found you while looking for G80 reviews...a camera which looks like I'm going to get for next vlogging camera. To be honest, I would have bought it years ago if I'd known it met so many of my requirements. I've subscribed so looking forward to seeing more from you.
If you can come up with the dosh for it, I'd recommend the Panasonic 12-35mm/f2.8 II zoom. I'd get the second generation as it's compatible with Panasonic's dual image stabilization system. It has amazing image quality, a fixed maximum aperture, and a very usable zoom range. It's a very popular lens among GH5 videographers for a reason. It's my go to zoom and I don't even do video. You mentioned a possible interesst in wide angle video so if you can live with a fixed focal length, check out the Laowa 7.5mm/f2.0. It's all manual (welcome to focus peaking) and produces a rectilinear image (straight lines, not a fisheye.) It's also very affordable for the quality of both the lens build and the image. Yes, I use one for ultra-wide angle images.
Awesome review! Loving my G80 and you're right about the kit lens; it's impressively sharp. What autofocus settings are you using? Mine is decent but not as good as what yours appears to be.
+Steve Muller Cheers Steve! I'm testing both single point right in the middle of the frame, and face detection at the moment - think single point is slightly quicker. Normally with spot metering too 🙂 best of luck mate!
I am a bit late to the party but for anyone watching in 2022 the difference between the g85 and g80 is region recording limit. The g80 is a euro standard when it comes to recording limits as it's bound to a 30 minute time limit and the g85 has an unlimited recording limit
I want to buy the G85. It's only $800 Canadian, which is very good. Comes with the 12 - 60 mm lens. Has everything I want - even in camera focus stacking for macro photos. But I am worried the grip will cramp my hands because DSLR grips usually cause your fingers to sit in one position for a long time and my hands get an arithitic type cramp to them when I hold DSLR camera bodies for too long a period of time. I hurt my hand when a construction worker (with very low self-esteem) wanted to prove his strength to me by shaking my hand like a metal crushing machine would grip waste material that was being fed to it for processing. The guy nearly broke my hand and ever since then, I have pain when holding DSLR bodies.
Hmm About the mic jack I think you can't put it on top cause it wont "weatherproof"? Can't really put in on the right, well pretty sure you hold the camera from there. Bottom? no? cause mounts and stuff might get in the way. May be on the back but ehhh
I have the g80, love everything apart from the IBIS noise, can hear it loudly in your test shots as well, Sounds like rushing water. Your D750 has a lovely picture.
Thanks mate - swapping between single point (just in the centre of the frame) and face detect at the moment - both seem to work really well for me! In any situation if one struggles I just switch to the other. Thanks for watching!
James Popsys Such a nice video and thanks for the answer! But is the single point focus work in all of the situation you shoot for your test or did you only keep the good one? Because I was quite suprise about the speed of the autofocus compared to a lot of youtubers that complaining about it!
+CamStreet Studio nope worked in all. I guess my test subject was fairly easy though (bright and contrasty) but haven't found problems in other situations yet 👍🏼
Year late to the club here, but the G80 is the UK variant with a 30 minute video recording limit to prevent the camera from being considered a video recorder which would incur an additional tax. The G85 is the WW variant with no recording limit.
Just bought one of these 2nd hand from a well known trade in website in mint condition, for a BARGAIN £324, body only, to use as a B-roll camera alongside my GH5. The latter is often used for underwater video, and therefore is often in an housing when I'm wanting some pre/post-dive footage on the gimbal. Looking forward to seeing what its 4K video output looks like vs the GH5.
Think this may have made up my mind as to what I am going to treat myself too this year. Great review and this camera appears to tick all my boxes. Thank very much!
I like your sense of humor and self-irony. Subbed ;) G85 owner here btw. AFC still suck in my opinion - not reliable, lots of hunting, etc. So I just stick to manual and tap to focus before shooting. Problem with manual - not every lens has a workable Fly-by-wire focus from native MFT lenses. My favorite is 25 1.4 for that reason.
Nice video man. G85 is definitely a good camera! Is the kit lens worth buying? I managed to get the body only for $679 USD on sale but kinda want that kit lens. Already have 4-5 others lens though lol
+Fresh New Tech Thanks mate! I would say if you've got other options for the main focal lengths already don't bother. It's just a bargain if you don't! 👌🏼
James Popsys already have everything covered haha guess if it ever comes around super cheap then I'll look into buying it. More is usually better, I think? 😂 Thanks man!
Great review! One of the few that actually praises the autofocus. I'm currently saving up for one, but I've noticed that every other review is like "Ugh, the autofocus is UNUSABLE," before showing a test clip of the autofocus actually working very well 🤨 Also, I love how RUclips auto-captions turned "It's a bit weird" into "I spit weird"
I would not complain more about the placement of the mic input. Ask yourself where is the other option to put that mic in? The other side? Then that will get in the way of you gripping the camera? Underneath? On the top? So, basically, it's really on that side. You just have to tilt the lcd a bit if you need to turn it. no big deal!

HI James, Great review and style in youtube- congratulation. I like the quality of the indoor vlogs. Could you suggest lighting for the vlog recording for me? TNX!
I love my GX7 which I bought at a bargain price because it had been replaced by the GX8, I just wish they were branded as Panasonic because I think the 'Lumix' name is a bit silly!
Hey James, great informative n concise review of one of my fav cameras. Really looking forward to getting my hands on the G85. By the way, apart from the kit lens, what one other lens do you think would be a good addition if I intend to do vlogging n mainly street photography? Tks. :)
Thanks mate! Ooh good question. I love my Pana 20mm 1.7 but I'm not sure it's wide enough for alot of street stuff and it does hunt around a bit trying to focus for video. I would maybe check out the reviews for the Pana 15mm 1.7. Or if you want to go super wide the 7-14 is probably my next step :) Thanks for watching!
You thought you were late to the party with the G80. Well I bought mine yesterday (23/02/21). I know that means it's really, really old now but it was £300 brand new and came with the 12-60, so I'm very happy. I needed something weather sealed and couldn't justify spending a lot. It's still a cracking little thing even if it's ready for the retirement village at this point. :D
Oh it was a perfect comparison for me because I was actually going to either get the Canon PowershotG something or other but no mic jack so they showed me the G-85! THANK YOU!
@James Popsys I sat through that whole review and you got me at "Battery life is......good" Thumbs up and Sub'd brother. Keep it up, good quality vid with what seems to be an honest style of presenting your opinion on the product....keep it up. (Damn you though, I've settled on not switching Canon after a month of watching countless review vids on the Gh4, G85 and G7...now Im back on the upgrade train...!!) Cheers. Peter, Vancouver CA.
Thanks for your kind comments Peter :) - So sorry to have you second guessing yourself on the upgrade, but then as we all know - it's half the fun! Best of luck in your decision making, but I'm confident you won't be disappointed if you take the plunge! :)
James, I love your channel. I am a lumix g80/85 user too. However I’m relatively new to video and photography. So I was wondering if you would do a short video about your Panasonic g85 video settings. Thanks James.
About the wide angle thing... I've just bought the Rokinon 12mm 2.0 for M4/3 (no electronic connection with the camera, sorry) but it's amazing and super cheap. Just saying.
+Evans Thanks so much! I haven't, but in truth my word wouldn't stand for much when it comes to grading as I'm still very green with video. Not sure if The Camera Store TV did a review? That's who I would check with but I'll let you know when I try them! Thanks for watching 👍🏼😎
Same - I already had this from 2 years ago, but I upgraded to an S5 II, which is obviously heaps better sure, but it turns out that some of the reasons I upgraded were actually available in this had I have known everything about how to use it.
James Popsys Yeah, I'm from Rhos... but I think it was the Colwyn Bay accent that gave it away! :) Have you moved to Manchester yet? Added you to instagram.
Well done mate ! Entertaining and informative....you're an inspiration and I'd love to see you as a "star in a reasonably priced car" on Top Gear........Don't those Guy's know how to shoot and edit 👍😎
Great review . I like your style to dude.. Very relaxed and no hype. , I just bought this camera for my birthday . Any good tutorial links you might pass on?? I'm a beginner basically on the video cam feature . Thanks man.
I came here for the G80, but then I heard you that your record with the Nikon D750. May I ask how you nail the focus so good? Thank you, great review:)
Thx very much for the review .. you provided a lot of useful info. I have some questions, 1)What do you think about the g85 for streaming) , 2) do you know if the g85 has a "clean hdmi output" ? 3 ) the g85 stops recording at the 29,59 limit ? thx in advance
Hi! Great video! Some photographers recommended me this camera. I have the Panasonic Handycam HC-V550 and I want an upgrade. I want to use it for everything: interviews, street-vlogs, festivals, plays. Sometimes I need to take sports photos. Do you recommend me this camera? And what kind of lenses are better for most of the videos? Greetings from Spain! P.S.: I am suscribed!
Hi James, I'm writing to you today because i had a little (or not) problem, but it's quite a lkng time that I want to say "thank you" for the videos you make. I'm a Frenchman (pardon my english) and the happy (until recently) owner of a G80. Yesterday I was making some "low tripod shoots" outside when somebody rushed into th tripod... The G80 mounted with the 20mm 1.7 fell down from 50 cm... The vody of the lens is a bit crushed, but everything seems okay...the autofocus is loud and slow, but not more than before I guss. But i have the impression that the sensor (on the stabilizer) is moving way more in the body when the camera is switch off. How can i be sure everything is okay, or there is indeed someting wrong ? Feeling bad... I bought the camera just 3 mounths ago... Thanks for your help.
James Popsys Thanks for the answer ! I will do that yes. But I was just wandering : do you feel the sensor moving when you hold your G80 switched off ?
Hi again James. Coming back to Paris I immediately went to my favorite store, and they basically told me that if it's working, there is no issue. But, still, I'm feeling the sensor moving inside the camera when it's turned off. I it always moves, it is normal I know, but I never felt it before. Do you feel it in you G85 ? Thanks again, Good evening.
James Popsys - Wow! Only 24Mbps, impresssive, and i assume you have graded /color corrected the video a bit, correct? So if yes, would the 28MBPS (fullHD 1080p) from the G80 be sufficient for not-so-much grading without the video breaking apart?
QUESTION : If you were asked to shoot a scene with 2 actors on a park bench in a style similar to Forrest Gump, and are given the options to only use either the Panasonic FZ2500 or the Panasonic G85. What would you choose and why? thank you.
James Popsys thank you. I'm trying to decide what to go with. I currently have/use the FZ2500. I really like the price and image of the current G85 kit that's available.
Hi guys I'm new to the camera world, from my research I narrow my choices down to Pentax K-70 vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 I want great picture and video quality, without needing too much of upgrade in the future. my budget is under 1k with lenses. my question is which of those two best fit my need? Thanks
Hey mate! I know nothing about the K70, other than the fact it doesn't shoot 4k - so isn't super future proof for video. But the Pentax does have a bigger sensor with more resolution, so may be a little stronger on the stills. Without checking out loads of reviews, it's tough to say. I can only really speak on the G85, and I love it - sorry I can't be of more help!
Very useful review - maybe because I'm a fellow D750 video and image shooter. Couple of questions James does it have touch focus and how does it compare to the D750 for video.
+MarshallDashGD it's a personal choice, but for me I would get the Panasonic and use the money you save for fun trips or other interesting stuff that'll make for good films. I think most people spend way too much of their budgets on cameras 🤙🏼
Is it me or the video he compared with the stabilizer looked REALLY bad. Did he not have the correct settings on or is it a very bad lens? Please let me know. Im really thinking of buying this camera
Probably the most capable yet overlooked camera under $1000!
+DDW Reviews I think that's a great shout 👍🏼

Oh it was a perfect comparison for me because I was actually going to either get the Canon PowershotG something or other but no mic jack so they showed me the G-85! THANK YOU!
Nice video man. Just ordered the G80 myself and looking forward to lots of "focus. focus. focus. focus. focus." haha :-)
+James FitzRoy Cheers James! ☺ Enjoy - I don't think you'll regret it 👍🏼👍🏼

Keep posting man !!
GREAT review!! Love the focus examples. EOS RP full frame is actually lighter BUT, add a lens and yep, M43 is overall lighter for sure
James, I love your channel. I am a lumix g80/85 user too. However I’m relatively new to video and photography. So I was wondering if you would do a short video about your Panasonic g85 video settings. Thanks James.
Thanks mate, I'll add it to the list :)
More than usefull.. Great review thank you !! (Many informations in a small amount of time)
So glad it was useful Jonathan :)
About the wide angle thing... I've just bought the Rokinon 12mm 2.0 for M4/3 (no electronic connection with the camera, sorry) but it's amazing and super cheap. Just saying.
sooooo gonna buy that
+Jarmellow have fun with it! 👍🏼
Great review. Just wondering if you've had a chance to use flat picture profiles, and/or, what the G85 video is like to grade.
Thanks!
+Evans Thanks so much! I haven't, but in truth my word wouldn't stand for much when it comes to grading as I'm still very green with video. Not sure if The Camera Store TV did a review? That's who I would check with but I'll let you know when I try them! Thanks for watching 👍🏼😎
It might not have been an hour-long review but I enjoyed it and I got some good information. So thanks!
really enjoyed your review!
Never too late, I'm watching 5 years later as regretting a G7 I just purchased as entry level and looking at this instead.
Same - I already had this from 2 years ago, but I upgraded to an S5 II, which is obviously heaps better sure, but it turns out that some of the reasons I upgraded were actually available in this had I have known everything about how to use it.
Hey James, just came across this great review. The video clip of you walking down the woodland steps looks suspiciously like Bryn Euryn, Colwyn Bay?
+Charlie Pragnell ☺ That's the one mate! Good eyes 👍🏼 Are you local?
James Popsys Yeah, I'm from Rhos... but I think it was the Colwyn Bay accent that gave it away! :) Have you moved to Manchester yet? Added you to instagram.
+Charlie Pragnell What a small world! Not moving to Manchester for a couple of months so I might see you around, or we should go shoot sometime! 👍🏼
Well done mate ! Entertaining and informative....you're an inspiration and I'd love to see you as a "star in a reasonably priced car" on Top Gear........Don't those Guy's know how to shoot and edit 👍😎
My understanding is this would be better than my Canon g7x mk ii mate? Nice review by the way, really helpful.
Great review . I like your style to dude.. Very relaxed and no hype. , I just bought this camera for my birthday . Any good tutorial links you might pass on?? I'm a beginner basically on the video cam feature . Thanks man.
I'm very late to the party, but thanks for this review. Very much like the casual style. And you look just the right amount of hungover, hahaha :-)
If you stare at your profile picture long enough, it looks like your head and neck are a separate thing from your shoulders.
great no nonsense review thank you
Great review, thanks. Why did you buy this and not the em5 mk2? Just because of the 4k video?
I came here for the G80, but then I heard you that your record with the Nikon D750. May I ask how you nail the focus so good? Thank you, great review:)
I have a Panasonic G6 and the mic input port is perfect location..
Thanks for the helpful (and waffle free) review!
+Optimus Funk ☺☺Thanks! 👍🏼
JAMES..That OMD 5 You were showing as being Now Replaced,,THAT was the First OMD EM5 Not The EM5 MK II Right?
First EM5? Or EM5 MKII?
THANKS JAMES :-)
+chevypowertogo Yup! Version 1 😊👍🏼
Thank you fort he review, got to the point and answered my questions. can't stand those 20+ minute long reviews.
+Josiah Barnett no problem Josiah, thanks for the feedback. Short and sweet isn't my strong point but I try my best ☺👍🏼
What do you think of G85's color? I heard that Canon and Sony are superior when it comes to color processing compared to the G85.
Hello James... I'm from India and love Streetphotography. Would you recommend G85 for the purpose ? I don't shoot videos at all. Need your guidance 🙏
Nice vid and yet more evidence that I should give this cam serious consideration (even now that it's a bit long in the tooth)
Very nice video thanks. Would you consider a vlog on how you put your videos together?
Good review, thanks 👌
Fantastic review. Funny and fun too.
Hi James,
I'm writing to you today because i had a little (or not) problem, but it's quite a lkng time that I want to say "thank you" for the videos you make.
+Gilles Martinet 😞 I'm so sorry to hear that - maybe take it to a shop for them to take a look?
James Popsys Thanks for the answer ! I will do that yes.
But I was just wandering : do you feel the sensor moving when you hold your G80 switched off ?
Hi again James.
Coming back to Paris I immediately went to my favorite store, and they basically told me that if it's working, there is no issue.
But, still, I'm feeling the sensor moving inside the camera when it's turned off. I it always moves, it is normal I know, but I never felt it before.
Do you feel it in you G85 ?
Thanks again,
Good evening.
Gilles Martinet I have a g80 and the movement you feel when switched off is normal nothing wrong with it
Video looks really clean. So since you are using Nikon D750, What is the bitrate for the raw/unedited video file?
Good question! 24 mbps I think but couldn't be sure!
What would you choose and why? thank you.
Wow, what a question :)
The G85 I think, slightly bigger sensor but also the option to choose some special, fast glass for the shot!
James Popsys thank you. I'm trying to decide what to go with. I currently have/use the FZ2500. I really like the price and image of the current G85 kit that's available.
Cool video , but you didn't talk about the 30mins limit on video :/ I just got the G80 and that's my main problem with it
the live MOS sensor has a unique characteristic to it.
Hi guys I'm new to the camera world, from my research I narrow my choices down to
Pentax K-70 vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85
I want great picture and video quality, without needing too much of upgrade in the future.
my budget is under 1k with lenses.
my question is which of those two best fit my need?
Thanks
LUMIX g7
I have just bought one.
Very useful review - maybe because I'm a fellow D750 video and image shooter. Couple of questions James does it have touch focus and how does it compare to the D750 for video.
Man I love the hell out of you! Keep up the great work and keep doing reviews :-)
Cheers Rob - plenty more to come :)
This or Sony a7r for filmaking/vlogs?
+MarshallDashGD it's a personal choice, but for me I would get the Panasonic and use the money you save for fun trips or other interesting stuff that'll make for good films. I think most people spend way too much of their budgets on cameras 🤙🏼
great review bro . do the g80 have a flat profile settings ?
Is it me or the video he compared with the stabilizer looked REALLY bad. Did he not have the correct settings on or is it a very bad lens? Please let me know. Im really thinking of buying this camera
Very nice Review. I think very much in modern Humor Style like the Grand Tour, but still very Original. Just Great !!
