    Thanks to your videos I just got the G85 as a birthday present to myself and I couldn't be more excited. However, I still need to learn how to use it since it has so many buttons and options. Maybe you could make a tutorial on how to take advantage of the most important features of this camera such as 4K live cropping and settings for manual video filming, it would be awesome. Cheers!

    As a recent G85 owner, I think I can tell you why the G85 is not king of the vlogging market. It's the (very) poor continuous autofocus in video mode. You mention it several times, but I think you are downplaying by a lot just how big a problem it can be. In my experience, it's so bad that it makes the camera almost unusable. I really wish I'd spent my hard-earned money on something else.
    Your solution - to simply set the focus by touching the screen - doesn't work for me for two reasons. The main reason is that I don't want to film only myself while shooting video. I routinely turn the camera around and take video of scenery, objects, and other people around me. And then I reverse the camera and aim it at my face again. And for that, continuous autofocus is essential, and it simply doesn't work on the G85. It won't focus on anything by itself no matter what magic combination of settings I use. And if, by some miracle, it does achieve focus correctly, the background pulses in and out of focus, and it is very distracting and annoying.
    The other reason your technique doesn't work very well is that when I hold the camera away from me far enough to achieve a wide field of view, I can't reach the screen to touch it. It's too far away. I have to bring the camera closer to my face so that I can touch it and lock focus. But then I hold the camera farther away, and the focus becomes slightly off. And even if it works, it's hard to tell that it worked. I'm generally shooting in bright daylight, and I can't make out what is on the screen anyway. I can't tell if it locked focus or not.
    I've seen other G85 users try all kinds of techniques. They use long pointers to touch the screen or they attach a remote shutter so that they can trigger the focus. In my case, I've had to come up with a complicated system (employing back button focus) to use multiple focus modes. I'm essentially switching between multiple focusing modes depending on whether I'm pointing the G85 towards my face or away from me. And out in the busy real world, that isn't easy to do, and I constantly forget to do it or I do it wrong or it takes forever. I end up thinking about the focusing, worrying about it, and managing it constantly, and it drives me crazy.
    All I can think about is how nice it would be to have a camera that would simply automatically focus on whatever it is pointed at. I don't care that much about image quality or 4K or fancy features or any of that. I just want a camera that will focus on its own. And the G85 is not that camera.
    I agree with all the positive points you made about the G85 - particularly at its price point. That's why I bought it. And I thought the autofocus would be just good enough or that I could come up with a technique to work around it, but that hasn't turned out to be true for me.

    • @RebelChumps
      @RebelChumps 5 лет назад +2

      Yep i sold mine for those reasons autofocus is so so bad on the G85... it really messed up so much of my footage where i dont carry a external monitor and am out and about and cant continieusly watch the autofocus, interviews, vlogs etc... so many messed up hours and footage.. i sold it with love.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug 5 лет назад

      @@RebelChumps I see the same fate for my G85. I imagine I will sell it soon (with love, as you said) and look for something else. I have no idea what could replace it, though. There still isn't a low-budget/mid-range camera on the market that ticks all the boxes on my wish-list. And my wish-list is a pretty simple one, I think: good IBIS, good continuous autofocus, a flip-out screen, a mic jack, and relatively small and lightweight.
      I looked long and hard at the A6400, and it seemed suitable except for the lack of IBIS. The A6500 does have IBIS, but it lacks a flip-out screen (and the IBIS doesn't seem particularly good). And it goes on and on. No camera on the market seems to fit my rather simple requirements. That surprises me.
      It's crazy, but I find myself reaching for my GoPro every time I go outside now. The G85 just stays in its bag. The GoPro has worse image quality and worse everything compared to the G85, but at least I don't have to worry about whether things are in focus or not.
      🙂

      @@tomjens2046 I could be wrong, but your quote makes more sense to me as "Not great camera for my A cam.". Yes, that is one interpretation. For context, how many people are now using the camera they'd use as their A cam if someone said, "You have 2 days to spend this $20 grand I'll give you on a camera and lens for your setup"?
      My guess is almost nobody.
      The point is that we can only do the best we can do with the resources we have. The Camera Conspiracies YT channel is quite successful and I'd venture to say that he uses the G85 more than any other camera!
      IOW, it is his A cam. Pretty much everything he tests gets compared to it for it's vlogging ability.
      Another camera guy -- Markus -- is serious when he says content is way more important than equipment. He made a short movie with a $1000 Panasonic camcorder.
      I'll give you this word of wisdom. If you have a G85 and think it is trash, you will not produce the quantity and quality of material that you would if you were grateful for having a G85.
      A negative attitude is debilitating. A positive attitude is energizing
      Choose energizing regardless of your current circumstances.
      And, yes, the Camera Conspiracies host would rather vlog with a G85 than anything Fuji outs puts out. That's makes the G85 his A cam over Fuji. Different strokes for different folks.

    hello. great video. can I please ask - what are you using for audio when you're doing the vlogging in the forest? I see a lav, but what it is it? And, do you have the levels on the camera all the way down, or s it working stock? last question if you don't mind - does it have a limiter on the audio? I do guitar demos, and it could get really loud - will it limit the audio, so it doesn't clip? I have a canon (XA20), and the audio is exceptional, and limits perfectly. thanks!

      Also, I just rewatched the video and it looks like TEDD is using the RODE VideoMic Go, which is a wireless mic that you connect to your camera and then can clip onto your shirt or plug into a lav. I just got the Panasonic G85 myself thanks to TEDD's vids, and there is a limiter for the audio as well as mic gain controls. I haven't tested to see how loud I can push it, so I don't know if it'll clip if doing guitar demos. If all else fails, just get a ZOOM H1n and either plug it into the camera or sync the audio in post. I know for sure the ZOOMs can be pushed and heck, I was able to record an Uli John Roth concert almost up front many moons back and it sounded great!

      Another point -- accessories for MFT, and especially Panasonic, are plentiful -- I bought a $40 3rd-party battery grip for the G85 which looks and works the same (so far) as the $$$ Panasonic one. Takes one battery, has the shutter button, front and back adjustment wheels and one Fn button. It feels light and a little plasticy (and it is not weather-proof) -- but for $40 I can now use my G85 for hours and hours on two batteries, I can shoot portrait and not twist my hand sideways -- and make my most common adjustments with the two control wheels on the battery grip.

Admittedly V-Log is an paid upgrade but 10 bit external 4K in a point and shoot? I know some people have reported “soft” lenses but mine is fine. It could be wider in 4K but I have found some situations where the crop is an advantage. 200mb 1080p looks really nice.
