MFT for its size to performance will be around for a long time. People need to remember that MFT was developed even when full frame existed for a purpose. Some reviewers want us to think we are running 1.0 in a 3.0 world. That is not the case at all. Those other sized sensors already existed.
The only thing that is killing mft are the Creators worshipping full frame and bokeh tbh when I see a good video I never asked a question "what camera did he used"
@Steve H You make some good points. I think for some street and wildlife shooters they will continue to use MFT as the size and crop factor helps in certain situations. I wonder how it will be once 6k or 8k starts to become the standard as the sensor size might not be big enough. The value for money is something else I think will keep it around for a while as well!
@Dadja Yeah I hear what you are saying. I do think that full frame does have its advantages and is better for certain things, but I don't think it is the end all be all for everyone. I'm not sure if it's the price tag for those cameras that draws creators to use them as a flex or what haha.
@@JakeMcHugh yeah full.does have alot of advantage when I hit 1000 subs I might look into the lumix s5 or GH 5 depending on the amount of lenses im goin to buy
Have been a G85 user for 5 years. The auto focus for me is not a big deal as I mostly use manual focus, love the "IBIS" built in the camera, and what I love about Panasonic is the consistent firmware updates and how they continually support their older cameras even the G85 which is probably 6 or 7 years old now since it's first release! My G85 just keeps getting better even the auto focus with every new firmware update!
If you're looking for a small budget GH5, the G85 is it! I think it's a great starter 4k camera and if you decide to go with the GH5 later, you can keep the lenses and use the G85 as a backup.
Great point! This is exactly how I started out. I rocked the G85 for a while and then jumped to the GH5 and was able to keep all the same lenses which helps save money compare to going to a different brand!
That is a great camera for the money! I think that is one of the best cameras for getting into the game right now. Would be a nice one for streaming as well. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Jake, great video. I've learned a lot, I never use the button AF lock in my G85, I need to explore more that. BTW, you look a bit blurry (out of focus) in your studio shots, do you used any filter or vintage lens?
Those Panasonic menus are nice. The g85 still very good in 2020. I jumped in with g95 and now g9. However thinking about getting a g85 too for street photography. Also good for video I have not found a loud lens in the lineup.
It's so crazy to think how much the whole camera line for Panasonic offers for the money. For example you can get a 10bit capable camera in the G9 for around $900 while still being able to take amazing photos!
Thank you! I’m glad I could help out. Both are great cameras, but the GH5 is in a league of its own for the features to price ratio. I don’t feel like it limits me and still holds up to most cameras on the market while being 4 years old. Thanks for watching!
just bid a g80 w/12-60 for only 350 quids; it suits my small hand better n i like its colour better as shown in your still n videos footages; thx 4 the review anyway Cheers
Great video! So I’m looking to change camera systems and I’m really digging the Panasonic line. I currently have a Sony A6600 and I’m disappointed in it. Question, now that the G9 has been updated to have more video centric features similar to what’s found on the GH5 (and better video autofocus), would you recommend the G9 or GH5? I would consider myself a hybrid shooter, although I lean a little more towards video. 🤷🏼♂️
If you lean more towards video I think I would still choose the GH5 because of the video centric features it has compare to the G9. I will break this down a little more in detail below. *GH5 vs G9*- Both of these cameras have the same sensor. One isn't newer than the other in terms of that, but the G9 has a newer processor in it and because of that it has a slightly faster autofocus system in it and it is better for video autofocus as well. Both have VFR and you will have to Manual Focus on both in this mode. *What Makes the G9 Better*- Better Viewfinder, Lighter by 2.5oz or 70g, Higher Burst Rate, Higher Electronic shutter, Night Mode, USB Power Supply (like a USB battery bank for charging), Better stabilization when using Dual I.S. 2 Lenses by 1.5 stops and more better photo feature while being the cheaper camera as well. This is the better camera for someone who values Photos and video equally! *What Makes the GH5 Better*- Slightly Better LCD Screen, *Unlimited* Recording time, Cinema 4k, All-I 400Mbps (G9 does only Long GOP at 150Mbps) This means that the 10bit 422 is better on the GH5, It's a true multi format camera so it can shoot in NTSC/PAL/Cine which is a true 24fps not 23.97, Anamorphic Support, Vectorscope (you only get waveform on the G9), Focus Transition (Focus Racking build into the camera), Time Code Support, and the XLR 1 adapter can be used with this camera if you want to use an XLR mic with it. You can set up the camera to use Shutter Angle and this is huge for me. Instead of having my shutter speed set at 1/50 for 24fps and 1/125 for 60fps, I can just set the shutter angle at 180degrees like a cinema camera and whatever frame rate I'm in it will double the shutter speed for me. It also has Synchro Scan which allows you to adjust the shutter angle at one degree at a time to help you sync it up with room lights or screens. One last thing on the GH5, when using a recorder, if you press the record button on the camera it will trigger the recorder to start recording as well. This is something that can't be done on the G9. As you can see the GH5 is probably the better choice for a video first user! I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@JakeMcHugh fantastic answer! This makes total sense and I know GH5 can take great pictures too. I do love the idea of all the video features, which I can learn to grow into. I’m definitely more about video with some photography. This definitely makes my decision a little bit harder in terms of which to get. I just sold my Sony A6600, so now a decision must be made lol
@Sean Thao I would say so! You get a lot of nice features for the price with really nice IBIS as well. There are still very many 4k 8 bit cameras that people use like the Sony a6300/6400/6500/6600 that don't have the IBIS like this one does or in general. I actually have a video where I compare this camera to the Sony a6400 which you can find here: ruclips.net/video/6wqu4_2AZYM/видео.html I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I bought one a week ago in a local deal here in Switzerland (G81 variant of the "G85", so it does have the recording limit). For US$465, this camera had only a 4000 shutter count, a body in EXC condition, and it came with the 12-60 kit lens and the Lumix grip/battery extension (incl. 2x batteries). For the money, this (EXC) second hand camera is a terrific value IMO. I have been using over the last two weekends and it is a big improvement over my venerable OLY EM-10. I am using it mostly for photos, with the 4K video ad hoc. With IBIS, it is also perfect for shooting with my collection of vintage lenses. Love the way it feels in the hands, especially with the battery/grip extension. This accessory allows me to shoot in either landscape or portrait and always have positional access to the primary and secondary dials. Basically, the kit lens plus battery accessory would cost close to the total, so I got the body close to free!
@@JakeMcHugh i love it. The 4k is amazing. Im still learning some different things and the best settings for customs if I wanted to shoot a cinematic video, or settings for a fast pace workout, so far ive just been using the intelligent auto plus mode which is a beast.

Out of those choices I think I like the G85 because it’s the best all around camera for the money given the options. You get a nice looking image with good IBIS in a smaller body if size matters to you. It lacks good autofocus for video use, but if you are behind the camera most of the time this should be a non issue. Just remember it takes more than just a camera to get a cinematic image. Lighting is the most important when it comes to this in my opinion.
