You can activate movement of focus points via the cursor buttons on the G85 in the custom settings menu page 3/9. It's called "Direct Focus Area", which you have to turn on. Description says: "Enable the movement of the AF area using the cursor button". Image on the GH5 looks more evenly exposed btw …
I've used the g85 for 2 years. I own 2 of them. It is a frustrating camera when filming indoors. Once u reach 400ISO on F2.8 there is visible noise present. 1000ISO at F2.8 looks like garbage...and don't even think about trying 1500 or 2000ISO. I've decided to invest in a GH5 and a gh5s.
GH5 video auto focus is superior to the G85. I own a G85, and it's the one disappointment, but I've learned to use manual focus as often as possible. Worth double the price, heck no.
@@emmanuelgoldstein8233 I'm a bit late, but I'll answer the question. If you need the best autofocus, then get the Sony A6400, or A6600 if you want to spend more. The image stabilization is crap on all of the Sonys though. That's where Panasonic shines. If you're thinking about the GH5, it beats the Sony cameras in 100 different ways, and it has better autofocus than the G85. As for sensor size, it doesn't really seem to matter, but video looks better on the GH5 than just about any camera.
I have both GH5 and G85 and I find each one to be exceptional at what they do both video and even stills. The G85 is a good companion camera the GH5 they both match up nicely and at that price I cannot recommend the G85 enough.
You can set the G80/85 in manual mode your shutter speed and aperture and use auto iso which may be slightly different to the GH5 but it is possible. Nice review.
i just got a 85 for about 700.00 used in mint condition after selling the lens I could pretty much get 3 g85 for the price of one gh5 so the 85 wins for me.
yeah, i would say that even at full price, the g85 is the best all around 4k camera. and if you talk about jumping an extra thousand or more in your case, you really need a good excuse :)
Nice comparison video. It looked like on the stabilization test you had the G85 in your left hand which would most probably give you more shake then your right, assuming your a righty. Should have changed the hands in the middle for a better comparison if not using them on a single stick.
PierreTL Also, on the G85 if you put it in full manual mode and go to adjust the ISO, if you scroll all the way to the left you can choose to have your ISO in auto mode.
PierreTL Sorry, I thought I had deleted this comment. I didn't realize I was in manual photo which I believe allowed the ISO to be set to auto and not in movie mode.
I'm a canon user and I am making the jump to Panasonic due to the large variety of lenses , the image stabilization and of course the 4K. The gh5 is out of my budget but in between the gh4 and the g85, what would you recommend?
Hey Raul! I would get the G85 the in body stabilization is game changer! GH4 feels really old nowadays but I guess it depends if you need it’s special vlog functions!
Good comparison, thanks. On the G80/G85 you said you can't use Auto ISO in manual mode for movies. I think you can, in "M" mode, just not in "Creative VIdeo" mode (the "M" with the movie camera icon next to it). So it's fine as long as you don't need Cinelike-D/V profiles. Also the Auto ISO upper limit is selectable between 400 and 25600. I've just tried it and it seems to work fine and change the ISO appropriately when I go between light and dark rooms.
Hey! Thanks for your comment. Yes correct for the Auto in normal photo M mode! If you press REC it'll work indeed. Sadly I shoot in Cine-V all day haha. Oh can you set the range for the video? Couldn't find it!
Hey Pierre thanks for the comparison. This is exactly what I looking for right now, I have the G85 and I am thinking about getting the GH5 as well. Good work! New sub here!
It's a non contest for professional video. The GH5 has 10-bit and VLog-L, and that alone is worth the 1000$ extra. 4k60p is a nice also. The g85 is nice, but if you're serious about video, nothing beats the GH5 at this price range
I'm saving to buy a GH5, although I was lucky enough to shoot with both of them on separate occasions. And from experience it's the best cost-benefit not only money-wise, but in workflow. I participated in a short film where we used an Red Dragon, and while the images looked great, the workflow was a nightmare. Definitely something for bigger productions. I'd recomend the GH5 for anyone getting started
Hi would you recommend buying GH5 over G80 for paid work like basic music videos and some events and short films etc? If G80 is good then I would rather prefer to invest in quality glass instead of GH5 but who ever I have discussed with, all are suggesting to get a GH5 over G80. Here in the UK one can buy 2 and a half G80's for the price of one GH5 and more than 3 G80's instead of 1 GH5S. Also if its GH5 then would you still buy it over GH5S? Kindly advice. Cheers.
Heya! Check @ThePathLessTraveled (Ryan Wilkes) he's using a lot the G80. GH5s vs GH5 idk, I love the stabilization of the GH5... if you have a gimbal maybe then?
Awesome video! I'm trying to decide on a new vlogging camera to replace my Canon G7x. The G7x is a great camera but what kills me is that there's no mic input. I want a camera that can do 4K but won't break the bank and it looks like this one is it. I'm trying to get into traveling vlogging as well, so if you have any tips, let me know a if you have a minute! I'll definitely be subscribing. Good stuff!
+Sean Bonus thanks for watching! So yes keep the G7X for in the pocket camera. For the rest the G85 is great and at a reasonable cost. Agreed mic input is so important!! Sound quality is everything. Where are you traveling to? :-)
PierreTL Yeah, I intend to keep it as a backup/portable camera. I don't have any plans to travel yet. But I'm looking to break out of the traditional 9-5 job to pursue a small photography business, and get into RUclips videos/and travel vlogs! Life is too short to spend at a desk 8 hours a day :)
Hy, Do you know if G85 got HDMI LIVE mode and keep sending video signal trough the HDMI out put during filming like GH5 ?? ( My DMC-FZ300 LUMIX shutdown the monitor and give me a nice black window !!! ) PS : Same limitation on GH7 !!
Since I do not speak fluent English, I would be happy if you were to write which camera you would offer me to buy, whether both .cameras had a microphone, although I do not speak fluent English, I enjoyed the video, thank you, Daniel
I really really need you help. I will make vlogs, but also I want to do travel story, photos, videos corporative, and sport videos. What camara do you recommend? sorry for my english

yeah, just like Alex said.. The autofocus on the G85 sucks compared to the a6500. And for me (Vlogger) the autofocus is really important, but you know that from you videos eighter :)
lol, nah. for untrained, ignorant eyes the underdog might look the same or, hell, even better. in the long run, the gh5 is a champion and has more and more complex features than the g85. look at gh4 for example, still selling, still a great option, still worth around $1000 body only.
john smith hahaha for a butthurt gh5 owner that paid so much for a camera with many inferior features of course you like to think the other people just don't know better so you don't feel so stupid for the money spent lol
I own both cameras. Versatility wise it's not even close but overall the G85 is a really great camera. If you don't need 10bit, 4k 60, dual card slots or the full size HDMI output (which I do) then the G85 is great choice. At the same settings it's hard to tell the difference video quality wise.
4K is such a waste of time, especially if your content is something that itself will be outdated in 2 years! Most of the ppl are watching youtube on mobiles and PCs and FHD is good enough for that.
A bit too old GH4 in my opinion. It all depends on your budget and your primary use case. Do you need a flip screen? Do you need good low light? Do you need 4K 60fps?
It is my first camera.... I need good camera for travelling with good low light, focus, 4k 30fps...But i afraid focus on gh4, g85...Sony a6500 has great focus, but i dont like it//// You great shoot yourself on gh5(unfortunalety,expensive foe me(((), but what about focus in gh4, g85? I can shoot myself in focus and what lens need? Thanks so much for your answers !!)))

Good point, I did not mention that! Thanks for sharing.

userbosco would you buy a Sony for the same price? I’m sure you would say yes and i’m sure the reason would be sensor size.
@@emmanuelgoldstein8233 I'm a bit late, but I'll answer the question. If you need the best autofocus, then get the Sony A6400, or A6600 if you want to spend more. I do weddings with g7's and it's the biggest bang for my buck. I'll pass on the gh5 and would rather upgrade to the g85
Jorge Martinez i just watcherd a few of your vids. great work, sir!
Hi Sir..I also have a plan to shoot wedding with G85 & have u upgrade to G85.?any can u suggest to me Lens that might needed to shoot wedding? Thanks
Yup I’ve gotten paid work with my g7 as well
your clock needs a battery!
+Chris Nelson hahaha!! I was wondering if anyone would notice! Good catch. Yeah I turned it off.. for cuts it looks funny if you don't! 8-)
I have both GH5 and G85 and I find each one to be exceptional at what they do both video and even stills. The G85 is a good companion camera the GH5 they both match up nicely and at that price I cannot recommend the G85 enough.
why no mention of the aperture? Surely its easier to autofocus with a higher F stop- much wider depth of field = less demand on the AF system
G85 vs GH4 would be interesting as well, similar price nowadays.
Yes good point!
gh4 for higher framerate und "real 4k", g85 for image stabilization and 4k photo
You can set the G80/85 in manual mode your shutter speed and aperture and use auto iso which may be slightly different to the GH5 but it is possible. Nice review.
I still can't see it in the menu in Manual Video mode :/
PierreTL It's available in M mode, not Movie mode I think.
I have canon sl2 but I think I want lumix 85 or gh5 what do you think?
i just got a 85 for about 700.00 used in mint condition after selling the lens I could pretty much get 3 g85 for the price of one gh5 so the 85 wins for me.
yeah, i would say that even at full price, the g85 is the best all around 4k camera. and if you talk about jumping an extra thousand or more in your case, you really need a good excuse :)
I got a brand new G85 for USD $495, and at that price it was a steal. Still prefer my old GM5, though!
Scott MacLeod how did you find one for $495?
Thank you! This helped so much with deciding to get the 85 :)
Awesome!
I'm a complete beginner. How about night video? How good is it?
+Brian Gunel night is not great... :-/
I love my G7 and so I would also love the G85 even better. So.............I'm getting the GH5. :)
Haha sounds reasonable :p
Great video, I'm getting G85 for my vlogs tomorrow, I think it will be a perfect choice!
Awesome !
Nice comparison video. It looked like on the stabilization test you had the G85 in your left hand which would most probably give you more shake then your right, assuming your a righty. Should have changed the hands in the middle for a better comparison if not using them on a single stick.
Thanks! That's a great point. Will try that next time!!
PierreTL Also, on the G85 if you put it in full manual mode and go to adjust the ISO, if you scroll all the way to the left you can choose to have your ISO in auto mode.
Can you share the firmware version? Mine has been locked to 200 on the far left! Thanks!!
PierreTL Sorry, I thought I had deleted this comment. I didn't realize I was in manual photo which I believe allowed the ISO to be set to auto and not in movie mode.
For an amateur photographer would you suggest the G85 or is there another camera you think is better for simaler prices?
Hey Lewis! For just photography I would suggest another camera more like Fuji or Olympus, they feel nicer for stills :)
PierreTL Thanks for the advice! Will consider the G85.
Which one is better
Great video as I am was wondering if the G85 would make a good B cam for the GH5. Sure looks like it could. Thanks
Glad it helped! Yes good little b-cam in 4k!
Thanks for this video. Thinking to buy not only the camera but lenses that works well with these 2.
You're welcome Milo!
I have - and love both cameras. I am hoping the G85 will be my B camera. By the way I have been very impressed with the picture quality from the GH5.
Oh nice to hear. Yes impressed by the pic quality from the GH5! What lens do you prefer to use?
What clock is that? I like it? Clean and clear!
😄
Does the G85 have 10 bit video?
No it doesn't
PierreTL okay thanks for the reply :)
Good comparison, thanks.
On the G80/G85 you said you can't use Auto ISO in manual mode for movies. I think you can, in "M" mode, just not in "Creative VIdeo" mode (the "M" with the movie camera icon next to it). Hey! Thanks for your comment. Yes correct for the Auto in normal photo M mode! If you press REC it'll work indeed. Sadly I shoot in Cine-V all day haha.
Oh can you set the range for the video? Couldn't find it!
jammin023 Hey, where can we select the iso range?
Press the ISO button (up arrow), then the front wheel set the limit (shown at top right of screen). Again it only works in M mode, not M Movie mode.
jammin023 Ok, thanks. And what are the negatives of using M mode instead of Movie mode apart from the lack of Cine profiles?
As far as I can see, that's the only drawback.
EXACTLY what I needed :) Thank you for making this!
Glad it helped!!
Casey Neistat is on GH5 and it looked great. Hope to see more of you and him use it for vlogging.
Right I watched his last one closely. The quality is really a level up in my opinion. Any guess on the lens he's using?
Ya! He is using the 7-14mm f4 and the new panny/ Leica 12-60
So the grip is better on the G85?
+raredreamfootage for my hand yes!
For reference, how tall are you?
1m81 :)
This is the video I needed to see! thank you!!!
+My Marquez gals it helped!!!
Good video. New subscriber. I look forward to more. I think I have watched you before when you went to the Annapolis Sailboat show.
+Cruising Off Duty oh awesome! Welcome! Are you coming to the one in April?
Hey Pierre thanks for the comparison. This is exactly what I looking for right now, I have the G85 and I am thinking about getting the GH5 as well. Good work! New sub here!
+MarlonPTY thanks Marlon!! Glad it helped. Welcome to the channel!!! :-)
My next gear. G85 for vlogging unless there's an upgrade in the near future. And GH5 for music videos
The best combo!!!
Kaysha the G7 AND G85 are entry-level so the are replaced every year
game2572 Not sure when the g85 was unveilled. I'm ready to buy next month
Kaysha last fall
You think I should wait? I'm about to get the G85 this week, but fall is upon us
It's a non contest for professional video. The GH5 has 10-bit and VLog-L, and that alone is worth the 1000$ extra. 4k60p is a nice also.

Awesome! Yeap that GH5 is a killer haha
10bit but H.264 rubbish, still you going to get artifacts, 150mbps is nothing for 10bit.
so true, also 10 bit for web use makes no difference.
Super Helpful, thanks!
Glad it was Ben! Thanks for watching :)
the g85 is a great camera for the price!
Dual card slot for paid work is essential. The GH5 is professional.
Hi would you recommend buying GH5 over G80 for paid work like basic music videos and some events and short films etc?

Currently trying to decide between these two camera actually! Thanks for the comparison !
+Chase Thompson Glad it helps!! Try them in store if you can!! :-)
equal stabilization test idea: hold one camera upside down underneath the other, even better if you screw them together somehow
Good idea!
Awesome video! I'm trying to decide on a new vlogging camera to replace my Canon G7x. The G7x is a great camera but what kills me is that there's no mic input. salut, déjà très bonne vidéo :) et petite question est ce que l'on peu mettre le mode ntsc sur le g80 ? merci :)
+FLOW RAISON salut ! Merci. Oui il me semble l'avoir vu dans les options
Merci ! :)
Great video. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! :-)
Yes G85 can output 8bit 4:2:2 with no overlay continuously via HDMI
Since I do not speak fluent English, I would be happy if you were to write which camera you would offer me to buy, whether both .cameras had a microphone, although I do not speak fluent English, I enjoyed the video, thank you,

Hi! I really depends on your usage! דניאל וולצ'ונוק
Thanks for the tips! Sub love from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦
Great review Pierre!!!
Thanks Michael!
good review 👍
Thanks Andrew!
g85 boy?
G85 seems like a better camera, especially when you consider the prices. Dayuuum.
yes, to me price should be the biggest distinguishing feature. headphone jack is not needed for most vloggers. and with GH5s af issues...go figure
GH5 wins in every way (but the ISO?) except for the price and size.
New G85 or preowned GH4?
Aditiya Gama I'm in the same boat. Will probably go the 85 purely so that I have warranty.
I like the gx8 also...
n5750547 what's the point of gx8 if u could afford g85?
Started with the G85. GH4 just tried a few times never owned :)
Pierre serais-tu français par tout hasard ?? J'aime ta chaîne et ton contenu, keep up the good work :)
Tout à fait!! :) Merci!!! Welcome to the Channel !
I think the G85 in its price range is unbeatable, if you think different, please, let me know.
I really really need you help. I will make vlogs, but also I want to do travel story, photos, videos corporative, and sport videos. What camara do you recommend? sorry for my english
and night fotos and videos
+Jhonny Tavares I would it down to do you need 4k at 60fps? If not get the G85 and buy more lenses!!
I am a amateur videographer.
My fear is that the G85 in a few years is not so advanced and has to buy another. I dont know if is better pay more for GH5 since it is more advanced and I can be many years with that camera
I will want to do a slow motion, time lapse, and any staff to make a good visual material. But I think My fear is that I buy one now and in a few years there are better
I will go for the G85..
If I would spent 2000$ I would probably choose Sony a6500
Interesting! Out of curiosity, what do you love about the a6500 you don't have on the panasonic?
Benny Moose i just got the a6500 i have the g85 and the g85 auto focus with a wide lens is the worst and a lot of noise a lot of auto focusing issues
yeah, just like Alex said.. The autofocus on the G85 sucks compared to the a6500. And for me (Vlogger) the autofocus is really important, but you know that from you videos eighter :)
You hear the AF? With internal mic?
AF on a6500 is superb and low light just great. and that's it, it goes downhill from there. and of now, it sells for $999 on amazon
Haha you are fun! Liked the video a lot :)
Thanks for watching Casper :)
+Casper Janning thanks Casper!
Nice review, but ... you should fix that clock behind you ;-)
+Fred Hystair haha you noticed Fred! Next time I'll turn it off :p
Thanks for watching 'n
I like the philosophy to live life when you can
Right? :)
Lol that g85 killed that gh5 lol
lol, nah. for untrained, ignorant eyes the underdog might look the same or, hell, even better. in the long run, the gh5 is a champion and has more and more complex features than the g85. look at gh4 for example, still selling, still a great option, still worth around $1000 body only.
john smith hahaha for a butthurt gh5 owner that paid so much for a camera with many inferior features of course you like to think the other people just don't know better so you don't feel so stupid for the money spent lol
The fact is the G85 kicked its ass in most respects...deal with it
The ISO setting at auto when all else can be manual on the 5 is kinda huge
I own both cameras. Versatility wise it's not even close but overall the G85 is a really great camera. If you don't need 10bit, 4k 60, dual card slots or the full size HDMI output (which I do) then the G85 is great choice. At the same settings it's hard to tell the difference video quality wise.
4K is such a waste of time, especially if your content is something that itself will be outdated in 2 years! Most of the ppl are watching youtube on mobiles and PCs and FHD is good enough for that.
get some battries for you clock
Hahaha you noticed! :)
Gh5 has limited video footage which killed it for me
What? No it doesn't.
It is very cool! Best!
Thanks!
Please, help! What the best camera for vloging and travelling? G85,GH4,SONY A6500, GH5? Is GH4 old for 2017?))))))What do you think?
A bit too old GH4 in my opinion. It all depends on your budget and your primary use case. Do you need a flip screen? Do you need good low light? Do you need 4K 60fps?
It is my first camera.... I need good camera for travelling with good low light, focus, 4k 30fps...But i afraid focus on gh4, g85...Sony a6500 has great focus, but i dont like it////
You great shoot yourself on gh5(unfortunalety,expensive foe me(((), but what about focus in gh4, g85? I can shoot myself in focus and what lens need? Thanks so much for your answers !!)))
why do you not like the Sony a6500? Wait 2 weeks for the Sony Event, Sony will release a new camera.
I felt a similarity between the host the guy from pink panther
Oh! The so called "experts" of You Tube!
nice. like from Ukraine ;)
Its just simple, GH5 is 4k video no limits with 60P vs G85 is 4k video 30min limited with 30p.
dimitrimoonlight G85, no 4K recording limit either.
Oh. Sorry:( well then g85 is 8 bits viideo , gh5 is 10 bits video.
And the most important, GH5 has V-log. 8 bit is fine for rec.709 profiles, but the ability to shoot log is what really sets the GH5 apart
