    If you're looking for a new camera, which one are you going to get? GH5 or G9? Are anyof you GH5 owners going to ditch it for the G9?

      I’m a GH5 owner and am very happy with it. As my main focus is filming the GH5 is the best choice for me. Thank you for your videos on the GH5 both on RUclips and Lynda online training.

    I just wanted to comment to say that I 100% agree on the 10 minute record limit. That is a LONG time, even for an interview. For events, sure. But that is when you grab a camera that can shoot longer. But even then, people have shot weddings with the Canon DSLRs and those had limits too, so there is always a workaround.

    Personally considering switching to the g9 for VIDEO because of the larger viewfinder and the upgraded IBStabilizer. We hand hold at every wedding and love the freedom. Some of our Hawaiian wedding ceremonies can get over 30 minutes, We have wonderful reverends that sometimes incorporate the leis for the guest in the middle of the ceremony and or hula dancer + music. There is always a spot to hit start and stop. be blessed Frederick

    Another use of 1/32000 shutter speed; Gives you the ability to shoot in bright sun and use a faster f-stop for your lens to keep a more shallow DoF.

    Love the dual nature of the GH5; versatile video features while still being able to deliver descent stills to my clients. Thanks for getting in depth with the nitty and the gritty technical details. Your video has certainly helped clarify the purchasing options. Keep up the great work!

    I''ve been a Canon shooter for 39 years, but I do like the Lumix line for certain events. It's nice at a reception to carry around a lighter camera than the canon r6 or 6D. The MFT sensor if fine for reception pics. I also have a G100 I use for video in the studio..

    Totally right about the recording limitations on g9. 4k 60p I use maybe for a few minutes at a time at most. If I'm recording something longer, then I'm usually recording with audio, so I'd need to be in 24p anyway

    • @christianfuerst1052
      @christianfuerst1052 6 лет назад +1

      one exception: when recording a concert or any event where the camera will remain steady and/or unattended on a tripod, but for instances like this you won't need the 60 fps and 25 will do

    10 minutes is a huge limitation for just about any RUclipsr in the niche I am in for example. The majority of my videos I have to let the videos run for 10-20 minutes most of the time. Thanks for the detailed information. :-)

    As a journalist. I do interviews and no. We don't stop the camera. It keeps rolling. Continuous shoot is even more important for solo when you are the interviewer and the cameraman.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад +2

      Then the G9 is not the camera for you. A video journalist needs a video camera. Not a stills camera that also does video. Wouldn’t you agree?

    • @SwapnilBhartiya
      @SwapnilBhartiya 6 лет назад +2

      I agree. But before GH5 happened we had to make compromises. Unlike videographers, we can't log around big boxes and set a booth. We have to move around, attend keynotes and meet people so lighter is better and GH5 touched the sweet spot. The flip side, unlike my Nikon D810 that I sold, it's not a great camera for low light photography. So I am looking at something that can be accompanied with GH5 and that's what brought me to your video :)

    Went from a Canon environment to Panasonic. I researched everything I needed and ended up with a GX8, now discontinued. I love this camera and its lenses (12-35, 35-100, 100-400) and have had more of my work published in six months than I had in many years with my Canon. The weight is terrific as is the menu system. So..if I had to now choose a Panasonic camera, I'd go with the photo/video emphasis as opposed to a video/photo emphasis. Reticulating screen is a must for me. So many other ways to accomplish 4K video, though my GX8 produces video that works for me. Amazing how many Leica looks I get.

    Can't beat the value of GH5. The G9 is not as versatile. Also think about resale, the GH5 will bring more resale value.

  • @chicken2nite351
    @chicken2nite351 5 лет назад

    A year ago, I couldn't decide between the GH5 and GH5S, so I took the shortcomings (low light and stabilization) of both in the GH4 instead and used the money on a Zhiyun gimbal as well as an Epiphan streaming box, not realizing that I wouldn't be able to use the gimbal with any cables tugging on the camera.
    Now, I'm at the point where I'm tempted to get a second camera body and find myself missing the stabilization more than the low light. The photo features of the G9 are quite tempting for product photography, but the video features of the GH5 are also quite tempting for recording events or if I ever want to get back into making a short film or colour grading. I don't have an Atomos recorder, but the GH4 can output 10-bit if I did, which would presumably be handy to match with the GH5.
    With 2 Oly (12-40 2.8 and 60 2.8) and 1 Panasonic (14-140 3.5-5.6) native lenses as well as a pair of 1st party DMW-BLF19 batteries, I'm pretty settled on sticking with the M43 system for now. I still just can't quite decide between these 2.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  5 лет назад +1

      You can’t go wrong with the GH5. Still a flagship, still great for both stills and video. I shot all my stills in India this year on it. You won’t be disappointed if you buy one. And you can probably get a used one if finances are a concern.

    • @chicken2nite351
      @chicken2nite351 5 лет назад +1

      @@photojoseph Thanks for the reply. After a shower, I found myself leaning that way. Right now, both cameras are on sale for 30% off SRP, the lowest ever, likely due to the G95 as much as anything. At first I saw the G9 at 30% while the GH5 was only 25% off, which tilted me towards it more, but finding the GH5 elsewhere for 30% off made me rethink that reasoning.
      For some time I was thinking that the high res mode would be a big part of what I'd want IBIS for, but the situations where it would be necessary or even viable (outside of product shots, but even then the final result would be for much lower res platforms) would be quite limited. 6k video, All Intra high bitrate codecs, and unlimited recording are pretty nice features to have.

    Thanks! This was super informative. For commercial video, you definitely don't need more than 10 minutes. For weddings (although I usually shoot at 24p for ceremonies) the 10 minute record limit would be a dealbreaker. Thankfully for me, I'm so happy with my GH5 I don't see a big need to grab a G9. I'd rather grab a couple more GH5 or GH5s bodies and use the GH5 for stills as well as video. That's just me though.

    Yeah when deciding between the two - take it from me, a guy who produces 90 minute feature length nature/hiking/backpacking/camping style documentaries - I can't think of one single time I pulled a 4K clip that was longer than about 4 minutes off my camera. And that was after me doing about 6 narration takes in one shot. I can think of very few use cases where a 10 minute video recording limit becomes significant.

      Interviews. I'm a pretty experienced interviewer and I like to let folks talk and get relaxed, and have the conversation flow naturally. You might talk 20 minutes just to get one perfect eight-second clip-I've done it, certainly. Also there are presentations and performances where you want to let it roll. For me, at least, it's a consideration.

The limitations on video shooting of G9 are disappointing for the stills photographer, can't set aperture for slow mo as well as time limitations? Thanks for this in-depth comparison. I’ve ordered the G9 as an upgrade to my GX8. Selling all my Canon 5D MII gear, as I’ve learned I like my back more than full frame. My question is I bought the Panasonic LUMIX G X 12-35 MI and the Panasonic LUMIX G X 35-100 MI when I bought the GX8. Why would I want the new MII versions? I am watching conflicting reports how these old lenses (ha 3 years) are now out dated or will not work with the newer IBIS. You mention in this comparison that lenses are the longer term investment. I feel my GX8 and my paired lenses are all obsolete.... What are the differences? I’ve updated all firmware. Thanks!

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      Not obsolete. You gain an extra ½ or so stop I.S. with the Mark II versions, when paired with the GH5 or G9. And improved weather sealing. But unless those are critical to your work, then don’t bother upgrading. Spend the money on another lens! You still get superb I.S. and weather sealing with the Mark I lenses. The newer ones are just slightly better. I did not upgrade mine.

    While I am very much interested in a G9 I still wonder if it is the best option for me. I do shoot some sports and dancing so the extra burst speed might be nice to have some times but what I have seems to get enough keepers as it is. My G7 is great in general but do often find the AF could be faster and its low light performance could use a boost too. I am guessing the G9 should be a lot faster at focusing but have not seen much low light shooting or experiences shooting in lower light conditions to know if there is an improvement there. Then there is the price with is still significant especially compared to previous models and is about the same price as a Nikon D750 which is a great full fram body (I have one already). I do also hear that Nikon is going to release a pro mirrorless camera too this year and possibly a D750 replacement which makes me wonder if it is worth waiting until then to make my mind up especially as what I have is mostly doing the job.

    As far as I am aware there is no cooling off period after the 10 minutes is up, so you can start recording another 4K 50 clip instantly. If heat is an issue, how come this is possible? I’ve been searching for people who complain about overheating from doing this but haven’t found anything. I like the g9 but not if it would overheat, so I may just have to take the risk and find out myself unless you’ve got any ideas?

    • @photojoseph

      PhotoJoseph yeah, since the 10bit and higher bitrate of the GH5 is all on lower FPS (4K 30/25 etc) it isn’t much better for someone who has interest in filming in 4K 50/60 since both g9 and GH5 record the same. Only difference is that pesky time limit, but like I say I’m not so sure if overheating is that bad of a concern since there would be more complaints and warnings from Panasonic about it destroying hardware. I have opted to order the g9 (better video AF and stabilisation won me over), I’m certainly going to test the heating and I’ll let you know the results! Regards

      PhotoJoseph One question though. I was wondering what you use to transcode the 10 bit and hire formats. I see that you are a Mac user as am I and did Final Cut have this feature built in or do I have to be searching for a plug-in to do the conversion? I am currently still on the iMovie but plan on upgrading to Final Cut within the month.

    Thank you in advance"
    John h
    Answers to your question
    Yes, there is a 30Min Video Recording Limit on HD Video, & 10min Limit On 4K Video
    Do to due to sensor heating in poor design of reducing heatsink mass?
    thus If Video is your focus then the GH5 is a much better choice for just additional $285.00 more

    Ok So it's 2020 and is the G9 worth buying for a videographer which is what I am. The answer is YES! I love your video awesome points, but since the G9 has had software updates Wow. With the filming you can now film with Mov, and you can film in 10 bit as well. The auto focus has been improved as well. As we all know there is no perfect camera. I've been using Panasonic for 5 Years now list as followed G7, G85, and now G9. Why the G9 well to be honest it comes down to price the G9 now is under 1,000 and you can film 4K at 60frams so that's huge. I totally agree that the G9 was geared more towards the photographers but I do believe especially now more videographers would drift to this camera and this is just my opinion I believe for video it's the best camera for under $1,000. I've also used Sony A7III which is amazing for video, amazing auto focus which helps a ton if you're filming wedding, great at low lighting, but can't film 4K @60 and the screen also just flip up and not to the side, and lastly the stabilization on the G9 is better than Sony I believe because Panasonic is micro 4/3 more room Sony full Fram less room because the sensor is bigger. sorry for rambling on

    Great video! But one question, if the video shooting limit is only due to the smaller camera body and overheating, why is it that the G85 has no limit in the US, but a 30 minute limit in Europe? Same camera, same body...

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      The G85 doesn’t shoot 4K60p. The 10 minute limit on the G9 only applies to 60p. Otherwise it’s the 29:29 tax limit.

    Mr PhotoJoseph! Thank you - is nice! One question - can I make an ultra-def megagigapixel time lapse using that wondrous sounding feature?
    If so, then can I do it using a built-in intervalometer (there is one, right?) or, if not, can I attach an external one using that old headphone type of jack?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      Hm, I’m pretty sure you would have to do it externally but I have to ask - why? Time lapse = video. What would you do with an 80MP video? Standard resolution for stills is 5184 x 3888. Ultra HD (4K video) is 3840 x 2160, so well under that. Unless you need to do 8K video (7680 × 4320) there isn’t much point to doing huge time lapse video. Am I missing something?

    So, I'm split between the two. The showstopper for me on the G9 is the 30 min limit for 30fps 4K. The 60fps limit of 10 min is not something I'll ever want to exceed. So ... since you have access to the G9, have you tried going into service mode to disable the 30 min limit? There are lots of youtube videos on this for other Lumix cameras, but the G9 is too new. If I can bypass that limitation, it would definitely affect my decision. Any chance you could try this for us?

      Excellent question. “Yes”, with a big “but”. There’s a max number of frames that can be shot before the camera needs to pause to clear the buffer, even with the fastest memory cards. That limit is about 50 frames.

    Yo Joseph, if I take photos on one Lumix model, remove the SD card, and insert into a second model (non identical body) will the photos, videos be viewable/editable/readable?
    Asking just in case I get a GH5, I can pass the card to my assistant to edit in camera (LX100) and transfer via image app to phone to upload while I use the “A” camera to continue shooting.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  6 лет назад

      Generally yes. Video can be different though. If you shoot video in 24p and then put the same camera to 29.97, or put the card in a 29.97-only body, then it’ll show as unreadable. Photos should always be readable because the camera looks at the embedded JPEG of a RAW file, and doesn’t try to decode the RAW file itself, so it should work. There may be exceptions but in general it works fine. That said, even though the format is the same between LUMIX cameras, conventional wisdom is to always reformat the card in the camera you’ll be using it in.
