Thanks for this video, for me personally the cooling fan, ability to record 120p with audio and the price for a kit with 20-60mm lens are making the s5ii very attractive. The only things I prefer on the canon are less rolling shutter in 4K, and familiarity as I’ve had canon cameras before.
I don't find the S5 green at all, and Panasonic is usually know by all it's users for being a bit on the magenta side, but I find the Canon to be even more magenta
Great video. They are both good cameras. As someone who primarily shoots real estate video, I use the Panasonic S5, which has a similar aps-c crop in 4K 60fps as the S5 MK II, combined with the Canon EF-S 10-18 lens. For me, personally, the extra one-stop-plus of dynamic range and the flexibility of Panasonic's V-LOG is great, and the fact that the S5 / S5 II has MORE dynamic range in aps-c crop mode at 4K 60p than the R6 II in full frame at 4K 60p... well... I am a bit surprised about the green shift you encounted shooting with the S5 II, but a lot of that might have to do with the lens(es) you shot with. By that, I mean that all of the various lenses I shoot on my Panasonic S5 (Native Panasonic lenses, Minolta MD lenses, Minolta AF lenses, Sony A-Mount lenses, Canon EF and EF-S lenses) all have different color shifts when using the same camera settings. Also, if anything, V-LOG has a reputation for shifting magenta in the highlights.
Being a Lumix user for 9 years I nevertheless must admit the R6m2 is a better hybrid camera! But the actual price difference for bodies only is 1000€ in Germany. So, being a pure hobbyist I can’t justify the switch to Canon actually…
you can body is less expensive you can have lens not expensive like a very good 50mm 1.8 for only 200euros ... etc etc... R6 MARK II and 50 now 2200euros. when you posted yep the price was too high ... PANASONIC will be always less expensive cos you can find good pack with 2 lens for exemple the S5 MARK II is only 2000 with 2 lens 50mm and the not so good 20/60.
@@cyrillusventus1 , I find the 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens from Panasonic very good!… Actually, this lens was the only reason why I switched from the Lumix G9 to the S5. The G9 has much better color science but the S5 with the kit lens delivers much more details and the stills are much sharper.
Great video as always. My only issue was the autofocus test. If you just leave the settings on default then thats really not an accurate representation of the cameras true performance. Both have specific tracking priority settings and I have seen many other reviewers quickly solve the hand over face issue on the S5ii just by choosing these settings.
Thanks! I did mention in the video that this autofocus test was not extensive and would probably take a lot more testing and be a separate video. I just wanted to show a basic comparison and talk about my experience using the AF on the S5II. I hope that was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Imagine Panasonic set the price as or only slightly cheaper than Sony and Canon how much qualities and capabilities it can put into the camera... King !!!
Here in Europe the panasonic body costs half as much as the canon body . I'll go for the S5 iiX version when it comes to the store! For me personally the cooling fan no overheating, 6K opengate, time code, waveform and luts in the camera and the cheaper lenses! I give Panasonic the benefit of the doubt, after a few software updates this camera will definitely become a winner. It is also much more robustly built.
@@s7evenTV When translating there was a mix up in google translate so I modified it! Good note, Canon is much more expensive and only allows the use of its own expensive lenses.
Great video! Also, Sony and Panasonic are great at also making functional, easy to use and sturdy side doors for cameras (the ones for the ports). Whereas Canon and Nikon are still in the 2000s, doing sh*tty flappy rubbery doors, that hang from a single point. Simply awful!
Fantastic video, Josh! I just wish Canon would add DCI 4K to the R6 II in a firmware update. I know that feature doesn't matter to a lot of people, but to some it is important (especially for cropping to the 2.35 aspect ratio). That would sway me to buy the R6 II and then eventually the R5 II (to use together for weddings, etc).
Thanks Kirk! Glad you like the video. Yeah, adding DCI would be sweet. I kind of seeing them holding that back from the R6II and only offering it in the R5 and up though.
@@Josh_Sattin Yeah, I agree with you that this is Canon's strategy for video, unfortunately. For me, the R6 II would be the ideal gimbal cam because of it's light weight, good auto focus, and full-readout 4K 60p. And then the R5 line would be the perfect A cam. So it would be helpful to have DCI with both, just like the Panasonic S5/S1/S1H (all have DCI/C4K). The full sensor 60p of the R6 II is actually pretty amazing in the market right now. I'm a long time/current Panasonic user (S5, S1), but I won't buy another cropped 4K 60p camera in 2023 and beyond. Here's hoping that Panasonic can deliver an S1 update with no more 4K 60p crop! But if Canon just added things like All-i recording and DCI to the "lowly" R6 II, they'd appeal even more to video shooters and I'm guessing they'd sell even more cameras. Come on Canon!
Adding DCI 4k in the R6 II will only crop a larger portion in the top and the bottom in the sensor. That is something that you can do in post with a proper sequence. So it will be more beneficial to shoot in 16:9.
@@philiciencasimir8015 Not true. DCI 4k is 4096 x 2160 instead of the standard (16:9 UHD) 4k which is 3840 x 2160. So there would be a gain in horizontal resolution with DCI 4k. Since the R6 II is a 24 megapixel sensor (and it can shoot 6k raw), we know that DCI 4k without a crop is possible.
S5II wins - IBIS, native lenses that don’t focus breath and overall workflow. Honestly, both cameras are great. Oh…why no full size HDMI port on R6 Mark II? Odd omission.
Canon wants you to pay another $2200 when a new camera releases just to get a few more features including that 🤣🤣 it’s insane!! I used to be a canon fan boy until they pissed me off by not letting 3rd parties make R-Lenses. That’s so stupid! It’s going to drive up prices and demand for EF/ EF-S lenses!
the first real review about the lumix...everybody else try to push this camera in the 7th sky..best camera on earth and so on...thanks a lot for this one!
1ST "REAL" Review?!? "Real reviews are all over the internet. Not discounting the perspective and observations made by this reviewer but it's clear that this video just happens to validate your particular bias against the Lumix. "Thanks a lot for this one!" LOL!
@@baihu4u If you get a pleasure trip to Japan paid for by Panasonic, you obviously have to speak highly of the product. Also, I don't see "traveling youtubers" using their free Lumix S5II (plus lenses), as their main camera.
@@Josh_Sattin it might be.. I really hope lumix upcoming cameras will get rid of this color issue. I heard people praising V-log in S5 cameras more than the SMII
@@Josh_Sattin The green shift is new. I have run the S5 and GH6 for the last year or so, the S52s colors are a big step back. I hope we get a firmware update that fixes it, but like you said don't hold you breath for it to come.
When testing autofocus and IBIS you should be using identical lenses if possible, as internal lens autofocus will effect the final image performance. Also, the Panasonic 5SII has firmware compatibility with only a few Lumix lenses. So make sure the lenses you are testing with have firmware compatibility with the 5SII. In the next couple of months all Lumix lenses will have firmware compatibility with the 5SII, but the lens firmware will need to be upgraded. ( this is why some reviewers ONLY used the Lumix 20-60mm lens for their reviews because the lens firmware had been updated for the 5SII camera )
@@Josh_Sattin Actually just ordered the S5II today with the deal B&H is running. Price figured in pretty heavily for me, but the uncropped 4K60 would be nice 🤷♂ I'm sure the S5II will work well for me.
Thanks for the video! Actually, the picture with the green trash can on it, shows a lot. While lately from Canon fan, I have become a Canon hater and Pana endoser, I have to admit, that in this example I like Canon. Please check that picture and see the trees. In Panasonic I see only musshines in the branches and lack of detail, while Canon holds a lot more details there. At least for me that is important.
The fact that you said the canon r6 ii is only slightly better then the s5 ii is impressive for Panasonic. It definitely makes me feel better about picking up the s5ii. Because that was one thing I was worried about, the autofocus. I don’t need perfect autofocus, just decent autofocus that you can take a picture or capture video that’ll be mostly in focus. And so far, I’m happy that I switch from Fuji to Panasonic. I still love Fuji, taut that auto focus just can be so aggravating at the times.
Yeah, the autofocus is close, but definitely not quite there. I have been using Canon and Sony for a while now and for filming myself I'd rather not even think about if the autofocus is missing. But as I said in the video, there are a lot of benefits of the S5II that might be worth that trade off.
@@Josh_Sattin i honestly think the canon r6ii is a better camera overall. The only reason why I chose the s5ii over the r6ii was the lens line up. Obviously Sony wins with the versatility of their 1st party and 3rd party options. But canon only has 1st party lenses. And although canons glass is probably amazing and worth every penny, I’m not doing this professionally, so it’s nice to have some 3rd party options to get decent optics at a decent price. If canon would’ve let tamron and sigma make lenses on their rf lenses, I probably would’ve gone with the canon. The s5ii just seemed like the best compromise between canon and Sony, while still be affordable.
@@Josh_Sattin Only some of them. 16, 35, 50, 28mm along with 24-105 f4-71 and 16-50 are pretty affordable. The only downside is that these lenses are bit dark. But this is a tradeoff for weight and price
Excellent review! Did you notice moire patterns on the s5ii due to the lack of AA filter to the sensor? And if so is it going to be a problem on professional work?
I can see a huge difference in all photos samples compared 😳 the canon looks sharp, defined, full of natural colors, the trees in the background are not blurred and you can see the colors in the bark. The S5ii was blurry on all pics, color off, and resembled a cell phone photo versus a canon professional photograph feel.. how are you not seeing this??
@@POW.CREEPER 1:29 that grass field has no definition and is almost blurry. The canon you can see the grass. The trash can itself is blurry. The leaves on the tree above are not sharp. Every thing canon is well defined and the color of the sky is so gorgeous.
@@ZoneOutClips Yea I see what you are saying. The panasonic does have a softer image, and not as detailed. Overall I like both images and the avg person probably couldn't tell.
Nice video! I think joining the Canon ecosystem is always a good idea for the long run. Especially becoming a pro, prices of lenses don't matter so much anymore.
I don't know about that. Sony has been doing pretty good where lens is concerned. They have an extensive lens series, I'm not saying canon doesn't. Canon has so many lens mounts and very little reverse compatibility. But when it come to the body, picking the right camera these days it's getting difficult, they are all just really good now, it just comes down to your use case.
@@AkaBull True, Sony would be also a very good contender, but regarding Panasonic I wouldn't know. For me the device should fit like a glove in your hands, that is why I don't look at Sony's stuff too much.
@@AllThingsFilm1 Yep? If you have a little bit of good photo and video business you just want lenses that work and deliver, I don't mind if a lens is 500 euro more expensive. Those are nice investment costs. Now I have all lenses I wish for. I don't bother about the price that much anymore.
The video I’ve been waiting for! Still on the fence because I shoot most of my real estate stuff in 4K 60p on the GH5, but I mostly have EF lenses 😝😅 Any over heating with the r6 ii on your real estate gigs?
If you own anything with a crop sensor, it’s just like recording in 60k with a default 1.5x crop.. wouldn’t the solution be getting a wider lens? Btw, Under low light conditions, non-static shooting (running, walking), the S5IIX destroys its competitors. Also being able to record externally to an SSD is one of the best features to have!! I was going for a R6 M2 until canon confirmed that only they will be making lenses. It sucks for people wanting EF/EF-S lenses because it’s only going to drive up demand for those lenses until canon releases more R-Series lenses. The lower end R-Lenses are cheap in quality.. Sony & LUMIX do a better job when it comes to 3rd party lens selection and quality.
I have never seen v log and the image of the s5mkii that green. All the other reviews and tests look way cleaner and natural than this. You mentioned something about the conversion lut, is that what’s happening here? White balance off?
Hi Josh. Have you tested the judder effect on all three of these cameras (a7 IV, s5 II, r6 II) in fullsensor recording mode? How much does the image jerk when panning and when tracking a moving object? I tested the Sony alpha 7 IV camera, and everything looks very bad in motion.
Well you can see the rolling shutter of the S5II vs R6II in this video. You can see the A7IV vs R6II in this video: ruclips.net/video/0OfUBOtj_NM/видео.html You can see S5II vs A7IV in this video: ruclips.net/video/Vxqp4PDPaSg/видео.html
Two questions: 10.8 stops of dynamic range in Clog3. What would that number be with Clog2? Also, is 10.8 stops what the camera produces with still photos, too? Thanks man.
Unfortunately the R6II wouldn't have much more DR if it had Clog2. I tested the raw on the R6II and it didn't have much more DR than in Clog3: ruclips.net/video/KLZ1-_4_JOU/видео.html I'm not sure about 10.8 specifically. Was that a test someone did in Clog3? I also don't know how that relates to photo since I'm mainly a video guy.
Nice fair review. I'd have liked some more monitor captures/recordings. I tried one, I liked it, but it is just too bulky and the CIPA seems really low! It is the first ML camera that I didn't run out of custom buttons! That is HUGE! I'm a Nikon guy (worst customization btw,) using an A7C for now because of all of the excellent f2.8 Tamron zooms in Sony mount. I'd also MUCH prefer 30-33mp for stills. I would have liked to have seen a few JPG comparisons just for kicks. The R7 seemed to have soft JPG's with a (too) cooler tint than the (too) warmer RAW/CR3 images.
Ive ran my MkII in 110 degree heat a number of times this summer im 4k60 and not a hint of ovdr heating and I mean run it. Runs out of batter before overheating. I find tk hard to believe as I know others with no issue of the R6 MkII overheating.
What autofocus subject detection did you use? I have seen a lot of reviews where the Canon autofocus struggles in low light, I think you missed a low light autofocus test.
The two tests that I showed in this video were not low light situations. Both were properly exposed using a gray card. The tracking test I had subject detection off on both cameras because I was using the touch tracking. The example of me waving my hands the S5II was in face/eye and the R6II was in human with face/eye.
this confirms my thoughts, I thought the S5m2 was on eye/face, It is recommended to have it on Human detect so that it doesn't switch focus to hands or anything. Richard Wong did a comparison and faced the same issue with eye/face detect.
I agree that if the person is moving around a lot then the human detection works better. I used that when filming my first impressions video. For a basic talking head situation, I didn't find much difference in performance between human and face/eye.
Unfortunately I only have access to limited gear. I have to buy everything. The only wide angle L mount lens with OS that I can think of is the Lumix 16-35 F4 Pro lens. If I were to do a lot of handheld vlogging work with the S5II I would probably either use the Sigma 16-28 F2.8 or the Lumix 18mm F1.8, neither of which have OS. Either way, the S5II stabilization system works really well without an OS lens. Hopefully you found this video helpful in some way. Thanks for watching!
S5 ii is a great camera which now but it's the same price as Sony a7iv now in some locations (Sony is getting cheaper or gets on sale as it's older now). So the Panasonic is losing the price advantage. And Sony has more and cheaper lenses so in the end we end up paying more for Panasonic system. Also there is many more Sony second hand lenses. Canon RF lenses are even more expensive so Canon would be the most expansive system when also considering lenses price. If Panasonic is a more expensive system than Sony it should be better to justify the extra price. Is it? Or is it better to go for A7 iv which is around the same price and will allow you to save money on lenses.
@@Josh_Sattin can't wait. It would be interesting to hear your ideas on buying into Panasonic vs Sony ecosystem as a whole. Canon RF is too much to justify for me as I'm a non professional. Here are some thoughts: I don't have a full frame camera at the moment. I want to switch to full frame for better landscape, nature, outdoor portrait, street and travel photography and start with video too. S5 II sells for 2300 or 2500 (kit) in Switzerland. Sony a7 IV sells for 2000 or 2200 (kit) at it's cheapest offer in the spring sale. But normally they cost around the same price these days in many regions in Europe. So if comparing it to a7 IV and the price is not a differentiator, is S5 II better? Considering ecosystem, cheap lenses, other available Sony bodies as upgrade paths. 33mpix. Second hand market. I still like the ergonomy, display, video options and IBIS of s5 II better. But it's the only phase detect camera which Panasonic has. So there is nothing to upgrade to at the moment..if you don't like it you're stuck with L mount lenses on the only body with phase detect that Panasonic has. I want to order S5 II with 20-60 mm and then get more lenses. However, I'm not sure it's a rational decision long term considering the Sony and E-mount ecosystem as a competition. On the other hand if I get a7 IV I'm worried I'll be regretting it every time when I see the low res screen of the a7IV and it's IBIS performance. As an amateur, handheld video means a lot to me.
thanks for such a great and detailed comparison, i desperately looked into your channel regarding the same comparison but with Panasonic S5 IIX as there we have prores, i am at the moment completely confused which one to buy as they are at the moment the same price but canon has 4k at 60fps FF and lumix have 6k 24fps Cropped with better dynamic range. Got to make a decision in 2 days any suggestion would be much appreciated. PS: i am video and photographer.
@@Josh_Sattin So i wrote some important points down on a paper for myself like this= R6 II: good AF, better low light and 60 fps FF vs. S5 IIx: pro res, slightly better dynamic range and shutter angle (i personally don't care about opengate or full hdmi port and the other hypes around S5 IIx). But honestly that prores is not that important for me to sacrifice 60 fps at ff. But then there is this 40 min limit regarding overheating issue as i watched your other video. In a middle of a wedding i can't turn the camera off for 10 min till it gets cold 😅atst i can't risk it losing shots at 30 fps if there is any action going on or if i need slow motion. So i am kinda stuck between these comprises. It's like you know A7SIII is the final answer but bcs of that high price tag and the fact that it's not even available mostly in eu, i got to somehow deal with. Too much said but here is my solution 😄and i really like to know your thoughts on this: I was like i can not make S5 IIx gets 60 fps ff at 4k by any means, but i can solve R6 II overheating issue with using atomos (not to also mention here i get raw prores as well) and expose my footages better to compensate that lower dynamic range as i mostly suffer from harsch highlights as i am mostly outside video/photographer.
is the dinamic range of these 2 cmerasthe same in in stills as it is in video? or is it a diferent story there? i do wish you talked a bit more about stills as well, thanks!
@@aylingpaul You might be able to, but I don't have a R7 to check. In the R6II the option is a bit buried. It's under Menu -> Camera -> 7 -> Shooting info disp -> recording emphasis
Panasonic standard profiles on the S5II are worse than the S5 and S1. They use bad sharpening and chroma noise reduction, this is really disappointing because I use Panasonic GH and S cameras since a long time and it's the first time the image quality is so bad (except V-Log, but it's not the best profile for low light, and the details are still worse than the S5).
@@Josh_Sattin gotcha, cause I saw some banding on the wall. And I've been seeing some of it on a couple of other people's videos. So was trying to see if it was certain cameras , something going on with youtube,, or just never paid it attention until I saw someone complaining about it on the new s5mii
It's just RUclips using 8 bit. It is caused by having a gradual light gradient in the background with the 8 bit. Nothing to do with the cameras, I am well aware of this and have been meaning to change up my back wall and lighting, but haven't gotten around to it.
Genuine professional filmmakers and videographers, those guys who use video or cine cameras for their day-to-day bread and butter, never, I repeat, NEVER use auto-focus in their work. The reason is very simple: every single action shooting MUST be 100% tack sharp on the subjects which, by today's latest technology, none of the existing auto-focus hybrid cameras offer. ALL of them are just "prosumer" photo/video tools. Therefore, until autofocus technology does not offer absolute ZERO lag in autofocusing, the only way to achieve the level of flawless sharpness expected from professional work is doing it manually. This is why 100% of all Hollywood and around the world professional films and videos are made by manual focus only cameras and they cost, even the less expensive ones, more than the most "advanced" prosumer cameras such as the R6 II and the S5 II discussed on this video. Furthermore, not a single professional video camera is hybrid. Thus, every self-called videographer, like yourself, who criticizes the auto-focus performance of any given camera for professional work, is not really a videographer. Think about a professional car racer. None of them would corner the track tack timely with a hybrid shock absorber set, so so good for racing, so so good for the streets. A last note, the hybrid Lumix S1H has earned Netflix seal of approval for video shootings but, mind you, it is by and large used as a "B", back-up camera in most cases and solely through manual focusing. Its autofocus sucks.
Josh, buddy please make a video about new Sony colour science and lumix colour science. S-log3 vs V-log. I would not care about the resolution and high frame rates, if the final image comes trash. 🙏
I prefer the option to buy 3rd party, new gen lenses. Canon is restricting its lens selection to just canon brand 😐 you have to buy an adapter to use EF/EF-S lenses. That’s a slap in the face to its loyal fan base. I went from the R7 & R10 to the S5IIX as my A cam & Sony fx30 as my B cam
Panasonic phase auto focus I call FACE OUT OF FOCUS IS the Joke ! Big one .....and they dropped price by almost 15 % .....of course canon is better camera .....RUclips propaganda for LUMIX is incredible....
Thanks for this video, for me personally the cooling fan, ability to record 120p with audio and the price for a kit with 20-60mm lens are making the s5ii very attractive. The only things I prefer on the canon are less rolling shutter in 4K, and familiarity as I’ve had canon cameras before.
The cooling fan helps so much. Especially down here in Florida. I’ve shot several weddings during the afternoon with little to no cloud coverage
I’m so glad companies like Panasonic and Sony are putting Canon in their place.
I don't find the S5 green at all, and Panasonic is usually know by all it's users for being a bit on the magenta side, but I find the Canon to be even more magenta
After you apply the technical conversion LUT I agree, a bit on the magenta side. But the Vlog image I was getting out of camera had a green shift.

Nice to hear your experience. How do you like 10-18 lenses? Aren't they dark for what you do? How is the sharpness in video comparing to others?
Cheers Josh I know you helped me decide earlier to stay with my R3 and R6 MK II but this confirms it even more ...
Nice! You have a pretty solid combo.
Being a Lumix user for 9 years I nevertheless must admit the R6m2 is a better hybrid camera! But the actual price difference for bodies only is 1000€ in Germany. So, being a pure hobbyist I can’t justify the switch to Canon actually…
Wow, it is always interesting to me to hear how different the prices are on these cameras in different parts of the world. Thanks for watching!
you can body is less expensive you can have lens not expensive like a very good 50mm 1.8 for only 200euros ...
Nice video Josh.. I was really expecting more deep down reviews on LUMIX S5II from you. 🙏
It is also much more robustly built.
where in europe? because for me here the r6ii body costs 3100 and the lumix s5ii body cost me 2200! and that is a biiiiig difference in price point
@@s7evenTV When translating there was a mix up in google translate so I modified it!
Good note, Canon is much more expensive and only allows the use of its own expensive lenses.
@@pfv3462 aaah ok yeah that makes more sense hehe ^_^
@@KirkDapo you're right! I didn't take account that the R6ii can shoot 6k internal.
shame s5 ii crop image in 4k and autofocus not as good as r6 ii.
Great comparison as always dude!!

Green shift worries me.. Is lumix going in Old Sony’s direction?
I’ve heard people guess that the sensor in the S5II is from the A7III. I haven’t seen that formally stated anywhere though.
@@Josh_Sattin it might be.. I really hope lumix upcoming cameras will get rid of this color issue. I heard people praising V-log in S5 cameras more than the SMII
Interesting. I've also heard the colors were similar with the S5 and S5II. I don't know. I have never used the original S5.
@@Josh_Sattin The green shift is new. I have run the S5 and GH6 for the last year or so, the S52s colors are a big step back. I hope we get a firmware update that fixes it, but like you said don't hold you breath for it to come.
@@Josh_Sattinthe s5ii sensor is a brand new design
Thanks for your review and detailed comparison 🐦
Great comparison. Canon, get with the program. Offer Clog2. Your cameras are otherwise great.

I’m interested in the one you used to shoot this video.
Josh is really a top reviewer in this space, great information put together and the videos look great and are enjoyable to watch.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Makes sense. I really love the RF L lenses, but they are pricy for sure!
@@Josh_Sattin Only some of them. 16, 35, 50, 28mm along with 24-105 f4-71 and 16-50 are pretty affordable. The only downside is that these lenses are bit dark. But this is a tradeoff for weight and price
Thank you for the video. I wonder if the S5II autofocus will be capable to work properly in an interview situation? Two people, two cameras?
Thanks for your reviewing. I hope you also review MF focused capability of both. Because I prefer MF when I'm shooting video.
Excellent review! Did you notice moire patterns on the s5ii due to the lack of AA filter to the sensor? And if so is it going to be a problem on professional work?
Totally Agree with pretty much every point you have made, not that I am surprised haha!
Nice Geoff! It was definitely interesting comparing these two cameras.
R6 MARK II is better and i come from PANASONIC i compared .... but price quality ok S5 MARK II is better.
Can you provide time stamps? And are you looking at it on a real good monitor (like iPad / iMac" etc)?
Prices of lenses don't matter much anymore? Seriously?
@@AllThingsFilm1 Yep? If you have a little bit of good photo and video business you just want lenses that work and deliver, I don't mind if a lens is 500 euro more expensive. Those are nice investment costs. Now I have all lenses I wish for. I don't bother about the price that much anymore.
I've noticed that you never talk about video file extensions for editing. Panasonic uses the cumbersome MXF format and Canon uses HEVC.
Why is it more cumbersome ?
The video I’ve been waiting for! Still on the fence because I shoot most of my real estate stuff in 4K 60p on the GH5, but I mostly have EF lenses 😝😅
Any over heating with the r6 ii on your real estate gigs?
I have been using my A7IV and FX3 for my real estate work because they have more dynamic range than the R6II.
@@Josh_Sattin Can you show in a picture what that means?
@@marcel9568 I can't share a photo here. What are you asking about that I can help explain?

Two questions: 10.8 stops of dynamic range in Clog3. What would that number be with Clog2? Also, is 10.8 stops what the camera produces with still photos, too? Thanks man.
Unfortunately the R6II wouldn't have much more DR if it had Clog2. I tested the raw on the R6II and it didn't have much more DR than in Clog3: ruclips.net/video/KLZ1-_4_JOU/видео.html
I'm not sure about 10.8 specifically. Was that a test someone did in Clog3? I also don't know how that relates to photo since I'm mainly a video guy.
@@Josh_Sattin I think that’s how many stops you mentioned it had in the video.

Oh okay. Sorry I didn't remember I said that. If I mentioned it then I probably got it from CineD or Gerald's testing then.
@@Josh_Sattin Ok cool.
So if you use the technical lut baked in, does it correct the green colour shift?
Do you use a Resolve CST for the Lumix? I find it saturates (over saturates?) the colors quite a bit, more so than other cameras I've shot log with
I guess the S5 IIx will be much better.
If “not” shooting in clog3 it’s 8 bit on the canon r6 mark ii , and since its clog3 this would be harder to match with a c70 right ?
If you could only have one camera, would you choose the Sony fx3 or the canon r6 Mark 2? For vlog/documentary work. I like to take photos occasionally
I feel like you've asked me this before. For me personally at the current moment, between those two cameras, I would chose the FX3 for video work.

is there really no phase detect in 1080p? how come? it does work fine in 4k 30
No phase detect in full frame 1080p 50/60 fps and up. I don't know the exact reason but some some of limitation inside the camera.
The Canon 4K 60fps starts overheating? At Full frame? I wonder WHY the S5II has that mode cropped in then!
S5 ii has fan in it. So heat is less of a problem. The real problem is in rolling shutter.
Ive ran my MkII in 110 degree heat a number of times this summer im 4k60 and not a hint of ovdr heating and I mean run it. Runs out of batter before overheating. I find tk hard to believe as I know others with no issue of the R6 MkII overheating.
S5 shot cropped 4k but no crop 6k?
color quality ... Canon all the way !
You should have used a Panasonic lens with OS
I'm working on an A7IV vs S5II comparison video. So please keep a look out for that. Thanks for watching!
@@Josh_Sattin can't wait. It would be interesting to hear your ideas on buying into Panasonic vs Sony ecosystem as a whole. Canon RF is too much to justify for me as I'm a non professional. Here are some thoughts:
I don't have a full frame camera at the moment. I want to switch to full frame for better landscape, nature, outdoor portrait, street and travel photography and start
with video too.
Why use a Sigma on a Canon etc?
Panasonic S5 II vs Canon R8?
No ibis on the R8..
thanks for such a great and detailed comparison, i desperately looked into your channel regarding the same comparison but with Panasonic S5 IIX as there we have prores, i am at the moment completely confused which one to buy as they are at the moment the same price but canon has 4k at 60fps FF and lumix have 6k 24fps Cropped with better dynamic range. Got to make a decision in 2 days any suggestion would be much appreciated. PS: i am video and photographer.
It really comes down to your needs. Is full frame 4K60 more important than Prores?
Too much said but here is my solution 😄and i really like to know your thoughts on this:
I was like i can not make S5 IIx gets 60 fps ff at 4k by any means, but i can solve R6 II overheating issue with using atomos (not to also mention here i get raw prores as well) and expose my footages better to compensate that lower dynamic range as i mostly suffer from harsch highlights as i am mostly outside video/photographer.
@@batchmatch I would probably look at a used A7S3 or FX3. They are such video workhorses with less compromises.
is the dinamic range of these 2 cmerasthe same in in stills as it is in video? or is it a diferent story there? i do wish you talked a bit more about stills as well, thanks!
I really don't do any photography so unfortunately I don't cover that on this channel. Thanks for checking out the video though!
Hi Josh. Can the R6 II record internally while outputting HDMI. I know the R7 cannot.
Yes you can, but the LCD screen will be off. I go over this in my R6II settings video: ruclips.net/video/2xqub_NF14Q/видео.html
Only EOS R and R5 can record internally with hdmi out and internal monitor on

Panasonic standard profiles on the S5II are worse than the S5 and S1. They use bad sharpening and chroma noise reduction, this is really disappointing because I use Panasonic GH and S cameras since a long time and it's the first time the image quality is so bad (except V-Log, but it's not the best profile for low light, and the details are still worse than the S5).

in one word R6 MII is better
That’s four words.
Canon ftw
In the video the canon body is looking very ugly against lumix in person it doesn't look ungli..
Well said that’s why I have been practicing manual focus more than auto focus
Josh, buddy please make a video about new Sony colour science and lumix colour science. S-log3 vs V-log. I would not care about the resolution and high frame rates, if the final image comes trash. 🙏
I am working on comparing the A74 with the S5II, so keep a look out for that.
@@Josh_Sattin thanks Josh.. 🤟
I prefer Canon colours and this is a deal breaker for me. I don't want to spend my time color grading much.
Real time luts out of the s5ii is a game changer. No grading needed and you can change your footages look in-camera
Photo Joseph, we know it’s you under the hat🤨
Imagine if cameras updated every few months like cell phones instead of having to buy a new camera every few years.
s5ii is video camera,r6mk ii is hibrid foto and video
Says a 'voice' who's not making $$$ shooting excellent stills with the S5. lol
Panasonic phase auto focus I call FACE OUT OF FOCUS IS the Joke ! Big one .....and they dropped price by almost 15 % .....of course canon is better camera .....RUclips propaganda for LUMIX is incredible....
Have you done firmware update?
Yeah I’m the idiot that believed it got the s5m2 and I fucking hate the thing vlog colors look like shit
@@Joseph04film Damn, Im on the edge of getting the S5iiX, the XH2S, or the R6ii. Used they going for about the same price $1,500.
Awesome video Josh. Thanks. 😊👍
