      Wait! The heading says G85; but it was really about the Sony A6500. I got the Sony, because he recommended it. I never listen to this guy again.

    I can't trust any reviews this guy makes! I bought a G7 and it has yet to smoke all sexy-like for footage! Which one of these function buttons is programmed to the smoke machine???

      The G7 doesn't have smoke features. This video is the G85.

    Your videos are fantastic, Caleb. As someone who spends a fair amount of time behind the camera is always trying to improve, your video reviews and videos in general are both high quality and highly informative. My G85 will be delivered this week and I'll definitely be checking out your Video Guide as well. Thanks again for another stellar video.

    I just purchased the G85 video guide. I was a little worried at first that I might be wasting my money. I have only just moved across to the G85 and found it quite confusing and then I purchased and downloaded Calebs's Video tutor. I am blown away. This has to be the be the best $20 I ever spent. So well made and so informative. I shall be watching this over and over again. Good stuff Caleb and many thanks. I am now confident I can get the best out of this amazing camera.

    I picked up the G85 (A really great kit bundle with lens and extras) for my channel, and so far I am loving it! I purchased it after nearly 4 months of painstakingly working my way through every camera I could get information on, trying to find a camera that could match my criteria. Because this camera will be used for traveling, I found the G85 to match almost perfectly with my needs. I also purchased your master video for the camera and have been working my way through it slowly, trying to memorize the details I will need to get the camera to perform optimally while I travel. Thank you for posting your review of the G85! I feel even more confident with my purchase.

      You sound like me when I was looking at buying a camera. I spent almost two months researching every camera within the $1.5k - $2k price range before settling on the G85. My wife thought I had some obsessive compulsive camera research disorder because every time she came into my office I was looking at reviews for yet another camera, after two months she was begging me to just pick one ;)

    • @thesadtraveler6811
      @thesadtraveler6811 7 лет назад +4

      I completely understand that, Pieter. Every time I have to make a major electronics decision (camera, laptop, even headphones) I do my research extensively because I want to guarantee that I will love my purchase for years to come. And because I know I will love and use it for so long, I can justify getting more expensive choices. ;)

    Caleb, I bought your G85 guide to help me UP the production value of my daughter's gymnastics channel. I highly recommend it for anyone new to Panasonic or this camera. Holy shit, you should be extremely proud of this video. It was comprehensive, and you answered every question that a person like me who is torn between the G85 and the G7 could hope to ask. I was particularly concerned about the lack of in body stabilization on the G7, especially since many of the attractive lenses I had been looking at do not provide that feature. Your video was a real eye-opener, and because I'm past my prime and my hand isn't steady, I realize now that the G85 would suit me better. One last thing also from one neck-beard to another, congratulations on the hot wife, beautiful home, etc.

    If you do high ISO comparisons, it would be great to have some area with a lot of detail (bank note, feathers, ...) in the shot to see if the camera is just smoothing out the noise. Flat areas of different color can't really lose any detail so it's hard to tell.
    Thanks for the video!

    Great review, Caleb. I still use the G7 and I kind of miss most of the features. Right now I'm shooting with it in -15 Celsius weather... this is not a weather sealed camera, it may stop working one day.... The G85 seems like a perfect all-arounder, as you said. However, I may start saving money for the GH5.

    I got this camera on Monday and I was surprised with the 4k and 1080p recording capability. At the time I purchased this the price was a bit expensive but I think it's the best camera for under 1000 dollars. After doing some testing I figured the best focus setting for me was face tracking (not the one point) The 49 point I alright for focusing on a general area and is kinda fast but not as fast as the face tracking. I did some tests focusing on random objects with face tracking and the focus sensitivity at +2 and its focuses in under 2 seconds every time. All in all, I'm pretty impressed with this and since it has 4k and CineLikeD it's kinda future proof.

    Caleb, thank you so much for this review. Your videos have inspired me to take the dive into videography and you've pretty much just sold me on the G85.
    One thing you haven't mentioned though is the recording bit rate. At 60fps, doesn't it record at 24mbps? vs the GH4s 100mbps? Is that not a concern? I was worried that would impact the quality for professional use.

    I'm currently using an OMD EM5 for photography, and looking to move to a camera for 50/50 photos and video. I loved the OMD EM1 mkII when I tried it, but my frustrating with the Em5 and the Em1mkii are almost exclusively the low light constraints and how fast things get noisy. Any recommendations? Maybe the a6500 with some prime FE lenses, and then a full frame when I can afford it? How much real world shooting difference is there from a micro four thirds to an ASP-C or Full frame? Im struggling to find a clear answer to that. Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful videos!

    7:22 the G85 is applying a heavier noise reduction algorithm. In that sense its better to do all noise reduction in post. Making the GH4 a better image in low light in that sense.

    Loving the G85 guide. Thanks for putting that together! I have a question about follow focus for G85: Have you found a truly good follow focus system for the G85? The focus ring on the kit lens (12-60mm) doesn’t really have a hard stop on focus. You can just keep spinning it round and round. The 25mm 1.7 does the same thing. Any suggestions on follow focus for these lenses or this camera?

  • @JeffSibelius
    @JeffSibelius 7 лет назад

    Hi Caleb - Your G7 guide helped me a lot and I'm hoping you can address a question about getting a second camera (actually a new primary camera) to go along with my G7. (I need something that records for longer than 30 minutes so another G7 isn't an option.)
    I can get a GH4 for about the same price as a G85. For the GH4, The mic jack is a great feature. For the G85, I don't care much about IS but reviews indicate the auto focus and image quality might be a little better than the GH4. I'll use this camera for video and for stills.
    Which would you get - G85 or GH4?

    Hi Caleb, great review again. I wanted to ask you: Do you know if the GH5 has E-stabilization and if it can be used with the Dual i.s.? i hate Premiere's warp stabilizer but the footage of the G85 with E-stabilization looked natural, not streched weirdly like it happens with Premiere. As for the G-85, it seems excelent for a B-cam for video.

    regarding the IEEE 802.11b/g/n, 2412 MHz - 2462 MHz (1-11 ch), Wi-Fi / WPA / WPA2, Infrastructure mode. I'm all new to this, can you take photos and have them automatically go straight to your laptop via WiFi?

    I'm curious about the storage abilities of a standard SD card to go in this. How many minutes of 4K/1080p footage would i get on a 64gb SD Card.

    Question, Can the G85 record externally with a monitor? If so what monitor would you recommend?

    Caleb, I remember in one of your videos you showed where the menu settings are to change the ISO that will enable all the incremental ISO numbers in between the 200, 400, 800, etc. Can you tell me where in the menu that can be activated?

    Can you use an external monitor via HDMI with this camera? You can't with the G7, the previous generation. With the G7, if you connect an external monitor via HDMI, like say, a Liliput 7", you get a mirror image of what you have on your flip-our screen, but the moment you start recording the image on the external monitor disappears an you get a message saying "now recording video" (duh, Panasonic). Do you get an image while recording with this camera?

    I'm looking to record longer footage, closer to 60-100 minutes. Will the battery die before then / is there a way to charge the camera while it's recording?

    Cute family!!! :) Thank you for all your content... Red gels and smoke on the G85? You are spoiling us :)
