Not at all! Not for me. The color science, lack of pro video features, and no flip out screen all make the a7iii not attractive to me at all for video.
A7iii for photos and gh5s for video is the way to go

Haha, again...! No, no, no, no... Autofocus is the least important feature ever for video. It is as "important" as font used for menu settings...
A7iii is no way a video aimed camera. GH5s has no competition in it's price and size range so far. A7siii is the only camera that can change the game a bit.
At the end of the day, having a great imagination for your film will always outweigh an expensive camera. As the saying goes, 'A bad tradesman will always blame his tools.'
You should rename the entire video as a RUclips filmmakers dream. Period.
You made a point that I don't see many people talking about: the color science!! I've been using a Sony a6500 for a few months now. It's a great little camera, but it has taken so much tweaking to get the colors to look right. But I just used the GH5 the other day and the colors are so accurate and detailed. Plus for the price point on these cameras, you can't really beat em when it comes to low-budget filmmaking.
Totally! The GH5S in particular I have found has amazing color science! That is something the spec sheet doesn't talk about and is something that is also subjective based on what people prefer. In my opinion Panasonic has nailed the "Canon" look. Its really really great.

Damn, my Mitakon f0.95 lens would be an F1.6 FF equivalent on the GH5s. I could have just the first 7mm of my nose hairs in focus and the rest blurred ;) Magical.

This was one of the best reviews for the GH5s. Been looking to upgrade, but didn't want to make the leap from Canon after all these years, but I think this video may have put me over the edge! Getting this with the speedbooster would definitely be a dream combo, and I can still use all my Canon mount glass!

Very convincing points about the GH5s! Looks like a great solution for a lot of people. I agree, a lot of vloggers have given the GH5 a bad rep because it’s auto focus isn’t as good as Canon or Sony... but for a lot of professionals, they won’t ever touch auto focus because they simply don’t trust it.
And to be honest, the autofocus hack shooting at 30fps and using the 179degree shutter angle really does work great!

Autofocus is important. You can't manually track focus in an interview shot with shallow depth of field. You will also occasionally need to shoot the same scene 15 times, until you stop deviating in distance from your subject so the manually set focus is spot on throughout.
Yes, the second improves with practice, but still, autofocus SHOULD be reliable and it obviously is. This is why some manufactures have the edge over others.
This is a great camera though.

You gained my sub when i saw you read the comments and respond to them. I am an editor and sound engineer that just jumped onto the MFT train and i think it really is great, despite the fullframe master race that's settled in the industry. I pretty much agree with everything you said, though it would've been nice to have "disableable" IBIS. BUT as the GH5s is mostly a professional version/alternative to the GH5 (otherwise it would've been named GH6 and most people didn't understand this), the exclusion of IBIS seems perfectly normal. Keep up the very good work! Great Video!

One of the best reviews on the GH5s. Lots of practical knowledge and experience. I personally liked what I saw for that demo-music clip. I knew what you were doing. :-)
I'm primarily stills but want to start on some video projects and was looking at the GH series. I'm in the m43 camp already and the ability to interchange lenses, swap cameras and accessories is a huge advantage. And really, the two GH5 cameras are for different markets. I think people are starting to realize that.

Thank you for the kind words Ricardo! I really appreciate it! Yes...the GH5S might as well be called a Varicam Mini instead. It is too confusing for people to see it as a "GH5". Its a totally different beast.
I understand the confusion. I was part of that group initially. I'm just super-grateful at the relatively inexpensive yet amazingly capable tools artists have at their disposal these days. The only thing holding back someone's vision is their own imagination. Amazing time we live in for art creation...
Please do a Fujifilm XT-3 review and/or comparison. I think it may be a contender to the GH5.
I love it when he says to like the lack of IBIS cause it feels more natural, like you couldn't just turn it off in all cameras that feature it xD
yes you can turn it off , but the sensor is still floating around so you get some movement .. unlike a fixed sensor.. so for a serious video shoot you can't have unplanned movement of the sensor.. for vlogging or "fun" videos its a non issue

Thanks Dave. Getting ready to buy a GH5S. Using the speed booster as you discussed for full frame, I am guessing there'll be no stabilization at all since there's no IBIS in the 5S. Am I right?
You can get speedbooster xl which reduces Crop factor by x0.74 and its insane if u use it u r reducing crop factor to 0.94x is fucking awesome
I have both the GH5 and GH5s. The dual image stabilization with the GH5 is a powerful tool. The GH5s takes care of the rest. I still haven't pushed my GH5s yet, but, I've seen footage from people who have, and I'm extremely happy about buying both cameras. I am literally prepared for almost any situation with these two cameras.
Also, I discovered a very important feature in the GH5s that is not in the GH5. That is, you have to tell the camera what kind of mic you're recording with. I recorded some footage with my Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun mic plugged into the GH5s. And for some reason, no sound was recorded. So...I went into the menu and I found out that I had to TELL the GH5s that I was recording with a "super cardioid shotgun" mic. Of course, the sound came out great once I set that up.

Can you suggest any info for shooting slow motion, 75, 125 and 175 (PAL) all look shit, lots of aliasing and artifices. Not sure if there's something I've done wrong.

Hi - thanks very useful information - are the files it produces easy to grade - log etc - I shoot a bit of video but only do light grading, saturation contrast etc.

Yes! Color science is really improved! I think the high light roll off has to do with its sensitivity to light

Been a canon loyalist all my life, but when it came time to upgrade the Gh5s gave way more for the money. Just need to get used to shooting with it over my canon gear!

The new black magic pocket cinema 4k has got to have created problems for Panasonic. I am a Panasonic user (G9, as I am more of a hybrid user with a photographic bias), but if I was more video focussed then I'd consider the GH5s or black magic pocket cinema 4k (you also get divinci resolve for free with the black magic, so for budding filmers it is a tempting option). The black magic is cheaper and has more recording options, the user interface is the best I've seen and the colour science looks really good (I have only seen it, not tried it myself yet, so that last bit is anecdote). As a Panasonic user I might tend towards using what I already know, but new users might not have my bias?
Blackmagic has shook the MFT industry for sure! Obviously panny is better for photos and with the GH5 we have amazing ibis. But for purely video people, the Blackmagic makes more sense.

Since the GH5s is still pricey, would you recommend the Sony a6400 as a primary RUclips camera for a stationary series at home? Would the low-light ability be similar to that of the impressive GH5s?
Great camera, but image still looks videoish as I'll be hard pressed to attain shallow depth-of-field whenever I want one (unless im very close to the subject). This is the best camera, much better than camcorder and phones, but only if full-frame competition is way beyond budget, but it is not so anymore. Thanks for sharing.

I totally understand what you're saying about IBIS but IBIS is phenomenal when using telephoto lenses. Yes sometimes looks super weird with gimbal and a wide lens but you just gotta learn how/when to work with it. A lot of times I don't have time to setup a gimbal and IBIS enables me to get great short duration steady shots.

Can only speak for Olympus but with all the glass I have, the wobbling of the edges stops starting at 16mm.

I already looked up the monitor brand but which one would you recommend as a more budget friendly option? I'd use it as a replacement for the lack of articulating screen on the a6500. Brian Park 박찬호 there are a couple of videos on RUclips where people test that. It takes great photos, yet you can’t crop much because it’s only 10mp. However for most online use and not huge prints that is enough. I would use it for photos
What is this "Extreme Speed Booster" that you mention? For the 1.1X crop.
i would love 10 seconds of that raw material to experiment with color correction capabilities, maybe create a new video giving that away as a downloadable file!!!
So I'm looking to upgrade my camera. With someone who does solo shooting and is front of the camera, how well does the auto focus do with the update?
Well...with the 179 degree shutter angle fix, it works pretty good...but its not reliable as a youtuber IMO. If you set your focus manually and just dont move..its fine. That is what we do.
Would you say as a less professional approach and more of a personal/youtube/vlog use the GH5 with the built in IS would be the one to take over the GH5S?
Absolutely. In fact, I think the GH5 is one of THE BEST vlogger/ personal/ youtube cams ever. Even with the GH5S and BMPCC 4K existing.

I'm looking at something low light for shooting conventions and weddings and I'm tossing up between this and the Blackmagic Pocket 4K. I know it doesn't have the sensitivity of the A7S, but it also doesn't have as much rolling shutter and I already own a GH5 and 2 GH4 so I can use my MFT lenses.
Hey, great review! Very thorough and you pointed out all the positives of the S over the GH5 and the amazing adaptability and high horsepower bit rates this thing can pump out.
But I think the "Subscribe" pillow is a bit overkill, dude. And on the same note .... goading ppl to subscribe at the top of a video... why would I do that? Keep making good content. The rest, as they say, takes care of itself.

I wonder if the sensor size is the same as the new BLack Magic Cine Pocket Cam. They call it a full 4/3 sensor if I'm not wrong which would be a little bit larger than a micro 4/3. This GH5s seams to have also a sensor a bit larger.

How you find out?
This camera has a huge bug that is not being mentioned that often... VFR over 60fps is completely unusable due to horizontal noise! The higher you go, the worse it gets. Check out online customer reviews of this cam... everybody is having the same issue. Furthermore, similar noise appears in darker areas even of 10-bit/24P footage. I wish I would have known these flaws before purchasing the GH5S several months ago because it is nearly impossible to get a clean image!
Interesting. I’m sure you can sell or return it if you’re unhappy with it. That sucks though. I’d keep playing with it. Remember to expose to the right when shooting log. Also, HLG is said to be better than Log is
I am holding out hope that Panasonic will fix this with a firmware update. It's such a big bug that they must address it asap. On B and H the camera has a low review score precisely for this reason. Until then, I will use Neat Video before delivering finished vids. Thank you very much for the response!

GH5s + SLR MAGIC anamorphics = a true cinema look for less than $10k. Although I recommend you rent the lenses.

@@connormccaskill That's what I used on my last two video for my partner Amy Klein. GH5s with slr magic 35mm anamorphot or anamorphic. Some random dinner video I shot for fun on my channel too. The in-camera de-squeeze is amazing so you don't need an external monitor for a small form factor. Seriously I just ran around with the camera and the anamorphic lens. I love it!
Why does nobody talk about how there is no autofocus at high frame rates? That a severely disappointing fact.
What software do you use to edit your video? I used the C4k 10 bit and the audio and video didn't sync using Adobe Premiere CC.

Man I don't get it, at 00:58 you're at 12800iso with the GH5 and still get a usable image. With mine I can't get over 3200 without it becoming a big pile of garbage noise..... Seriously.

Hello great video, you will be overwhelmed by questions so here's another to anybody. I'm video, not photo. On GH-5. Video-people don't do automatic focus. But manual with focus peaking is not easy, especially outside on the small monitor. Now here comes the point. There is a handy tool 'Manual focus assist' (it zooms in on a selected range but) great tool but it doesn't work WHILE you're actually filming. Any solutions for this (maybe the update can do this). I still love GH5 more than 5S , because as a one man videographer shooting low budget MV , personal short film . IBIS is more useable , especially you shoot in the car close up shot , everything need fast shooting , no plan shooting. How come GH5S is more expensive than Gh5 , for the feature things like 6K 4:2:2 24p , GH5 is much better than GH5s , why they make this camera a lot of cheaper than 5S.
The dual native ISO makes it unique. I think GH5S was designed for video pros and GH5 was for hybrid shooting

That’s a $50,000 Arri Zeiss anamorphic lens. Not a speed booster. Just a PL to MFT adapter.

I don’t think a Gh6 is anytime soon. Buttttt I would get one off eBay for sure used or off the grey market to save $$
The strange thing is that I am shooting in 1080p at 18mm with the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and the Metabones 0.71x and I should be getting around 23mm Full frame equivalent but instead I am getting a more cropped image, here is a comparison with the Canon Eos R at 24mm.

Kinotika [Dave Maze] the Gh5 crop is bigger than the GH5s and I am shooting with the Gh5s , I shouldn’t be getting 23mm like I said , I already did all the tests, idk what’s going on.
Kinotika [Dave Maze] just letting you know that I was getting a crop of 30 something, I took the lens out along with the metabones and put it back and it’s working now, I don’t know what happened , maybe something was not connecting properly with the camera and metabones. Thanks !
