I agree, Panasonic really needs to offer a Body ONLY option, not only for the G95 but for ALL their cameras. It sours the upgrade experience for existing M43 users who probably already has a few other kit lenses from their previous M43 cameras.
Not having something like phase detection / dual pixel autofocus is actually one of the reasons why Panasonic has such great image quality. More pixels are used for gathering light. And on a MFT System, ain't that what you want? 😉
It's crazy how much the price dropped in just 2yrs. I got this cam with the 12-60 lens for 800 recently. I almost got the G9 but I don't vlog so the 4k crop on the g95 isn't a huge problem for me
In the UK you can get the G95 body only for £899. The problem is, the G9 is currently on offer at £979 (after cashback). I can't see anyone buying the G95 when the G9 is only £80 more. If you want a budget Panasonic, get the G85. I'm currently torn between A6400 (£949), G9 (£979) and X-T3 (£1,149) all of which are great cameras with different compromises!!
I really appreciate that you are shooting with the camera you are talking about. I just watched another video where that was not the case...I learned very little. So thank you for this approach, which seems to me to be a no brainer.
I just picked this camera up for $548 with the 12-60mm kit lens and I got the 25mm f1.7 prime for $132!, camera is currently on sale for $700 everywhere. I was able to get open box excellent condition for another $150 off. It’s going to be a great companion to my aerial content.
You nailed it! G85 at less than half the price is still the best camera for the money on the market. NO DOUBT. The G9 for about the same money is the way to go. OR if you really want to be a video guy, get the GH5. No room for the G95 at this price.
That is so true everyday dad, if panasonic was selling the Lumix g95 without a lens for $700 to $900 bucks i wouldn't hesitate to buy it but at this point in time i'll rather just save my money and get a BMPCC4K and do all of my film productions on it instead
I've been saving up for the a6400 as I rather have great auto focus and I really like the image out of it. Awesome video either way keep up the great work👍👍
I went for the sony a6500 from panasonic because of the same reason about 3-4 months ago (just before the a6400 came out) and I hate it. No more Sony's for me. I might go for the Fuji XT3 instead.
I think the crop is necessary on both models, and other cameras as well, because of the amount of data that has to be sent out of the sensor. Some cameras will crop, others will skip lines, etc. to keep the amount of processing needed down. Increasing pixel counts only makes it worse. The camera would need a better processor or some such to process data at a reasonable frame rate.
Yeah the autofocus isn’t the best but it’s not absolutely terrible and it doesn’t make it a terrible camera. It’s still fantastic. I’d love to have one if I had the money😂maybe for Christmas or my birthday
Would have been more practical to see V-LOG L compared with Cine-D (possibly with contrast turned further down) and not the standard profile to give better representation of how V-LOG L on G95 is better (or the same) at recording dynamic range than the G85 that has Cine-D.
More and more RUclipsrs are saying the exact thing, PHASE detection. I'm waiting out for Olympus E-M5 to see if they will because they have phase detection in their E-M1 and X, just put it in the E-M5 with a few less points but I think they are just as stubborn as Panasonic. However I feel Panasonic is more committed to their DFD contrast detection than Olympus is with the basic contrast detection and they kept a pro level photography camera body at a better price with the G9. Like Olympus was with their DSLR line, they will probably over protect their Pro line of their Mirrorless, which is a bummer because I will probably move on to Panasonic or Fujifilm. Your videos have been helpful if I want to do more video and vlogging down the road.
Cinelike-D and Cinelike-V on the G85 are not a bad half-measure to a real LOG recording -- they do work well to preserve more dynamic range -- but the vlog-l really works well in recovering shadows, very much like film. Thanks!!!
Would you advise the g90 or the nikon z50 I want fast autofocus, sharp video and photo, least rolling shutter and a screen that which I could see myself. Thanks!
Question about the G95 vs the G85: A big thing for me is being able to plug the camera in while recording to prevent it from dying when shooting long video clips. I heard the G95 can be plugged in during use while the G85 cannot. Is this true? I plan to use it for extended 4K recordings and am also considering a GH4. I just can't figure out which of the three would be the best for the money.
Their auto focus sux so bad. I don't care about Panasonic until they get their sh*t together re auto focus. Leaving a comment to game YT algorithm for you. Love your video's thanks.
Awesome video. I used G85 and was excited so I was thinking of getting G95 when it was announced but with same AF as G85 I skipped it and got Sony a6400 and loving it. I would be great if you do AF test with G85 and G95 and compare test with G95 and a6400.
Whats your go-to lens for the A6400? I had been using the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 but im trying to downsize (God that thing is heavy). I bought the sony 16mm f1.4 yesterday. Its bigger than the sony 16mm f2.8 but allows for a shallower depth of field and also is a wider angle lens.
great video! how come you have no G9 vs G95 one? I really wanna upgrade, have G7 currently, but the lack of Built-in flash in G9 really turns me off as it is really a nice feature. I mean, common... even cheap crappy cell phones have flashes. why can't a G9. and I'm not a Pro so thought of getting a G95. it just feels like so many features have been stripped. I just wanna wait and see what Panasonic releases next...
Class video dude, shame the Panasonic af still sucks, apart from that the g95 (g90 over here) is a great little camera, especially for the price. Next question when are we going get you and Aj in the same video? You guys look like camera brothers!! 😆😆
Everyone complains about video autofocus. Every videographer I know that’s “great” uses manual focus. The “excellent” ones have another guy pulling focus in manual. lol and the cine lenses are manual.
@The Everyday Dad ... good vid but at the end you say I can't recommend this if it is going be your only camera but you didn't suggest any alternative.
Hello. Do you think that Panasonic will introduce a phase detection autofocus into G80 or GH5? Will the update appear? Maybe let's make a global petition to Panasonic;) I am writing to you from Oslo in Norway and I am curious to hear your opinion about the Panasonic GH5 upgrade: D
EVERYDAY DAD LOL I Like THAT :-) Hey my Friend What LENS Were you using on the G95 When you took that Bright Sunny Day Video? and how what ever That Lens Was ((DID It Also Work indoors? or was it a F/3.5 To Dark for Indoors without bumping ICO's to the Moon? :-) Looking Forward for Your Answers THANK YOU In ADVANCE :-) EXTRA GREAT VIDEO,
I know it has been 11 months since you wrote that comment, but I'll answer anyway. No, they aren't exactly geared more towards video, besides the GH line. However, with the smaller sensor you naturally get features that are good for video, but lose on some that are good for photo. Like having a a shallow depth of field, great for photos, but for videos, you'd have to step it down so your subject doesn't get out of focus with even the slightest movement. You also get better image stabilisation, because the sensor just has more space to move around, not so useful for photo, since you could just use a tripod anyway, but great for handheld video. Also, not connected to the sensor size, but Panasonic having terrible video autofocus doesn't have much impact on video performance anyway, because people would mostly use manual focus anyway on more serious video projects.
The real question is, is the G95 worth similar money to the G9 on the used market. And I reckon it isn't really. I like the body design more without the top display and the dial around the shutter button, but cropped 4k, missing animal af, a few other downgrades here and there kinda kill this camera for me in comparison.

I think the price of the g95 will drop in a short time.
Doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in this cam. at $1200
Great video. Looks like a great camera but your closing points were right on the money.👍

colors looking pretty good out of the G95!
