Hi, I'm the guy that built the carbon frame. I live in Sweden and am retired. Its my second frame, and last year I built the first one and went to Calpe region of Spain for 3 months and rode it 5000km. So Number 2 frame I made more refined. Long story short , Ive built a lot of stuff and researched fame layups and construction thoroughly before building it. The bike is called Ikarus, so Im aware of the dangers.😅 Dont want to post my email here, but i sent an email to GCN support.
I did my master’s thesis on muscle fiber type, focusing on the best non-invasive method to determine its distribution by comparing it with muscle biopsies. I found biopsies not particularly painful, but the procedure becomes harder and more uncomfortable if the subject is tense. The best method we identified (with the highest correlation) involved measuring lactate concentration after a 30-second all-out test and assessing carnosine content in the muscle using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Carnosine content is approximately twice as high in fast-twitch muscle fibers compared to slow-twitch fibers. However, these tests are estimations influenced by factors such as training, diet, and technique. Moreover, relying on a single biopsy to determine muscle fiber type is suboptimal, as there are significant variations in muscle fiber composition between different muscles and even within the same muscle. Recent research suggests that performing 3 to 4 biopsies from the same muscle improves accuracy and provides a more reliable estimation of muscle fiber typology.
I had several punch biopsies as part of a voluntary research study and they were one of the most unpleasant things I have ever experienced. I'm not particularly pain adverse but it was enough to put me off participating in another 😂
@@JanneRasanen2 haha true, actually the biopsies were taken from 2 muscles (gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis) but we took 2 samples from the same insicion going up once and down once 😁
27:50 that's the logic I used when I bought my bike. Not bottom of the barrel, so I wouldn't potentially ruin the experience, and also not something expensive, because I didn't know if I would keep at it, and now I already spent probably close to 3x the initial value of the bike on equipment, upgrades and other stuff.
Thinking back 40 years to my biology degree, there was a good way of establishing jump height: a jump and reach test. Using a pen, raise your arm and mark a point at the top of your reach. Then jump and mark a second point. The distance between the two points gives a good estimate of your jump height.
69. Same. But kettle weights, chest expander, and press-ups with little riser bars because my wrists don't bend back enough to do press-ups have had massive benefits to neck and shoulder flexibility, cured stiff neck so now I can look back while cycling so I'm back on my bike. A few press-ups on the hour, not busting a gut to do lots at one time
At 44 I don’t think have any twitch left in my muscles! As a young man, it was definitely the fast twitch world for me. Sprints and box jumps galore. Now, I can curl a mug!
As a pair of novice weekend cyclists, a friend and I often discuss each others strengths/weaknesses and whilst I can smash him up short segments or short climbs, he can chug away at 1-2mph ave faster than me over a longer distance. We put that down to different fibre types years ago… but never really thought to train accordingly. Thank you for discussing interesting topics.
Train for the type of rides you want to do. Smashing a bunch of 10-20 minute intervals is not going to help you much when it comes to holding steady power for 3 hours. Those steady 3 hour long rides give you a great base but aren't going to help you stay powerful in an anaerobic sprinty group ride or cx race or something. You have a lot of control over what you are good at, however at the highest levels this goes away. There's a reason track sprinters look like Robert Forstemann and GC guys look like Tadej.
@@SpicyTrifongo That makes sense, except I trained hard for a 2 week Lejog, but completely underestimated the amount of sheer power required for the climbs (Cornwall, anyone?). I am very efficient, and even fairly fast, on long rides and descents, just absolutely terrible at climbs due to being old and weak.
I've just subscribed to Life At the Manor, James' brand new channel about his adventure running the family manor he's inherited from his granddad. This tells me that he'll soon leave GCN. I can't see even him doing both GCN videos and farming. I may be wrong, but... And there's Hank's Dad in it, too!
I knew 40 years ago. Excelled at TT, no sprint. Train for sprint, lose ability to be around for a sprint! As an old guy, probably even more endurance oriented. Still plenty of endurance.
I discovered I am fast-twitch dominant because my “Stack-up” stats in TrainingPeaks show me to be relatively strong in short efforts and much weaker in long ones. It was a surprise: I had expected the opposite.
Wouldn't a post-it note (or something similar) on the wall (at full stretch) and then one at the top of a jump be an easier way to measure how high you can jump?
Doctors have a vertical scale with a "stick" to measure your standing height at the top of your head first, then you jump as high as you can and the stick indicates the highest point your head can reach...
Fast twitch, my muscles put out everything at once. I have to put in a ton of miles every week just to do occasional Century rides without my legs giving up.
I am not a racer, i only view race highlights, enjoy viewing cyclocross, which you cover a bit more now, albeit brief reviews, and I would never own a bike I can't carry my groceries on. so am not your intended audience. that said, I enjoy your humor, sincerity, and the chemistry between you two. thank you for all of your work. cheers from big sky montana!! (where the only thing we'd ever wax is our skis). !!!!!!!!!!!
I assume the jump test is measured by standing and reaching your fingertips to a point on the wall (and marking), then jumping and recording how high you can reach. Do what you like with your legs other than run up!
Yeah, this is actually a metric in American basketball and they have these testing rigs that basically look like the novelty signpost at Land's End! They have these inch-wide plastic pointers that can only rotate in the vertical axis and the player first stands flat-footed and bats away all the pointers within reach. They then jump and do the same and the difference gives you their 'vert' or vertical leap. Scores of 40in (1m) are not unknown, so I think we can assume there are no 'slow-twitch' players in the NBA!
RE: Recumbent video: I've seen Hank ride many recumbents during his tenure on this channel. One that comes to mind is within a very aerodynamic recumbent riding on a track.
I just wish that Wahoo would redesign their speed and cadence sensors so that we can replace the batteries easier. I ride a bike I don't have pocket change to use like a prying tool. :(
I usually wait till I get home, where I have much pocket change on my dresser 🤷🏼♂️🤣 But you could use the screw driver on your multi tool to crack the case if need be
@Thespinningwoman the wahoo kinda snaps together it has two halves and you need a screwdriver to take them apart for battery change, it make work with another battery, the leverage may be lacking though
I'm all for recycling but you'd need a Xmas tree with thick and strong branches to hang those chain decorations (u could hang them anywhere not just on tree, I guess)... Btw, are the links glued together to hold these shapes?
They used to call it the Sergeant jump, or standing jump. It's not about your feet above the ground; you first have to stand next to wall and reach up as high as you can when standing, and make a mark at the limit of your reach. You then jump as high as you can and make a mark above the one you made when standing. The difference is your Sergeant, or standing jump height.
