Brilliant Documentary, Amazing athlete and soul of a lion. Reminds me so much of my loved and late brother in law who loved his cycles and also spent many years making them lighter and faster, eventually owning his own bike shop in Liverpool. He spent many years racing for fun and also suffered with mental health issues. Sadly he took his own life, I will never forget that day that destroyed so many peoples hearts as I was left to wrap up his loose ends. I really hope and wish this Scotsman all the best in his future years, he's proved he is a champion of champions, irrespective of the politicians of the sporting world whos decisions tried to dishonor him, the likes of which still persist today.
Met Graeme Obree back in the early 90s in a hotel in Cardiff where me and my club were taking part in a Tae Kwon Do competitition . We had no idea who he was but he was very enthusiastic talking to us about cycling
Graeme O'bree wasn't just an amazing 'one off' athlete of huge ability & grit, he was & is a very very humble, respectable & intelligent individual. A particular person that you know will fight the cause to make things better. Graeme, lots & lots of people love you & always will.
I adore these older "we didn't have all the fancy bs you kids do" era docs in cycling history. I think the modern skill cap is a lot higher overall because of innovation and better materials (etc), but I think the top athletes back then were still operating at just as high, often higher levels. I still ride a mid 80s Peugeot, I like that it's heavier and limits cassette size (without modifying the frame), because one day when I decide to finally switch over to modern alu/carbon bikes it'll feel like I'm a jet engine by comparison. Major respect for those who rode these, and other bikes of the era at pro levels. Thanks for the upload!
Extremely sad to hear that he tried to end his life, after the remarkable achievements on track, road & his workshop, a very admirable, hard working, British hero!👍🙏

Accidentally came across this docu and I am amazed to say the least. It's this never to give up attitude that propelles us forward and no matter what the rule watchers say. Obere is the true champion!
I did not know much about Graeme apart from him being the world hour record holder. But now I know HOW he became that and it's absolutely fantastic and awe inspiring. Thanks for this film. It's one of my goto's from now on when I'm feeling lacking in motivation.
Nothing but respect for Obree. Amazing grit. UCI is a dispicable organization. You should read some of their communication. The interviews are just ... a never mind. Obree is a master.
I'm so thankful for these documentaries that I would not have known anything about otherwise... Thanks to who put this together and to who made it available!
Thx for the upload- I've been reading about Obree for the past 30 years when i got into cycling and buying Cycling Weekly (every week)- when i was training on rollers I had stuck a list of Hour Record holders and their distance on the wall in front of me- it was brutal, the Land of Pain I called it. Good times.....LOL.
Helped Graeme after he had to abandon in the British Championships ROAD RACE (won by Brian Smith Motorola) on the Isle of Man in 1994 - proper gent 😊 Great piece too - thanks Peppercorns.
What an incredible story, and inspiring man. ...The John Harrison of cycling (he was a solo and revolutionary clock maker who created the first clocks capable of keeping time for prolonged periods at sea, likewise derided and ultimately sabotaged by the establishment, yet he did something nobody else could come close to.)
Great add on to this story. Boardman told Obree after he lost to him Worlds to use his black VETTA helmet to beat the Frenchman. And Obree did use it! 23:00........Years latter we learned that Hein Verbruggen was dirty as UCI President.
@@bromagura5543 Yes it was. Look at the helmet he wore in the first races. After Boardman is out. He switches to the VETTA. Obree wrote about it in his book.
Thought that was Boardmans helmet. You see him hand it over, post race on track, when Obree beat him. Boardman appeared gracious in defeat, and respected Obree for what he was, a great opponent. Super sportsmanship.
Fantastic story! I hope Graham is doing okay today. Great seeing him wearing Shorter Rochford gear, they had a bike shop in Finchley, north London, I’d be there every weekend on my BMX with a whole crew of kids. Great documentary on a great man. Truly inspiring.
If you look on RUclips there's a documentary called " battle of the bikes " which is similar to this but a lot more in depth . All about Obree and Boardmans rivalry .
Inspirational story and so well documented here. I met Graeme some years ago - very humble and a joy to speak with. A true innovator with the mental determination to match.

Great film about a truly great person. A true artist, uncompromising, unwavering from HIS vision. And, unlike the majority of artists, genuine outsider.
All said below of his skills , Met him at English champs `25` in Beverley (Hull) Boardman won, Graham 2nd on I think 101/3 inch fixed, upside down drop bars!! A brilliant ride and nice all round bloke..Keep going
Great documentary, I feel very guilty that I remember Chris Boardman so well but have no recollection of Graham Obree. It reminds me of "The Worlds Fastest Indian", a talented builder and racer defying the odds.
Wonderful film. Wonderful story. I remember this from the time, but watching it laid out here shows you the establishment that Graeme was up against. Chapeau.
Where he is talking about the washing machine bearings: in bmx we call that a bottom bracket. The frame can be extremely weak around that area because it has so many weld areas, takes the brunt of your weight and has an axle inside it constantly undergoing pedalling momentum. For this guy to make a frame and bearing model from scrap parts is nothing short of genius, and I mean genius.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but until then cycling used ball bearings. Inspired by the washing machine, Obree effectively introduced roller bearings, a substantial and innovative advancement.
@@MarcABrown-tt1fp A regular bottom bracket at the time didn't use a sealed bearing. Obree was intelligent enough to realise that a sealed bearing would perform better. All bottom brackets now contain sealed bearings. He also realised that streamlining the tubes of his frame would help. All track bikes now have streamlined tubes. He also introduced the 'superman position'. Most triathelon bikes use this now. He was also the first to use a mono or 'leftie' front fork arrangement to save weight. The list goes on. The travesty is that Boardman became the establishment darling and has made a fortune as such, whereas Obree disappeared into obscurity. Obree is indeed a legend of a cyclist, and a legend of a human being.

Well done Graham, you are an inspiration for every budding enthusiast of any genre of sport, I have read your Biography and brought me to tears of how hard you worked to obtain your dreams!!!!, Work hard, believe, try, and FIGHT for it!!!!
Cycling history wouldn't be the same without him.
Many thanks for this wonderful documentary. 👌
I enjoyed every second of this. Thank you. What a heroic, renegade maverick this man was/is.
Met Graeme Obree back in the early 90s in a hotel in Cardiff where me and my club were taking part in a Tae Kwon Do competitition . We had no idea who he was but he was very enthusiastic talking to us about cycling
Wonderful documentary. A world-class innovator AND world-class athlete. We salute you Graham.
That is what uci does... ruin peoples life
@@jasmijnariel Yeah, they almost killed a sporting legend. The way his idea was ridiculed & likened to riding a bike with one's nose was shameful. What a bunch of corrupt, ignorant fool's!
I'm so glad G's doing well.🙏
Always so impressed with Graeme Obree’s efforts on and off the track! There aren't many cyclists that can do what he did, I mean a bit of a washing machine for a bottom bracket!
Love this docu'. Thanks for the upload 👍
🚴♂️Obree is a living legend 😎🤙
Can't explain how much I admire this man
This is probably the most interesting thing i have ever watched on youtube. Thank you!
One of the greatest stories unbound determination, such a phenomenal athlete and engineer all in one powered by a genius mind.
Wow. If ever there was a film waiting to be made, this is it
This is one of the few things youtube has "insisted" upon me by repeatedly showing me the thumbnail, and I am super glad they did. Awesome doc.
brilliant documentary thanks for the upload
I'm so thankful for these documentaries that I would not have known anything about otherwise... Thanks to who put this together and to who made it available!
Thx for the upload- I've been reading about Obree for the past 30 years when i got into cycling and buying Cycling Weekly (every week)- when i was training on rollers I had stuck a list of Hour Record holders and their distance on the wall in front of me- it was brutal, the Land of Pain I called it. Good times.....LOL.
Helped Graeme after he had to abandon in the British Championships ROAD RACE (won by Brian Smith Motorola) on the Isle of Man in 1994 - proper gent 😊
Great piece too - thanks Peppercorns.
Thanks for that bit of info about the helmet, it adds a dimension to the story that I was unaware of.
So was it Boardmans's helmet he wore?
@@bromagura5543 Yes it was. Look at the helmet he wore in the first races. After Boardman is out. He switches to the VETTA. Obree wrote about it in his book.
Thought that was Boardmans helmet. You see him hand it over, post race on track, when Obree beat him. Boardman appeared gracious in defeat, and respected Obree for what he was, a great opponent. Super sportsmanship.
Love that he gave him his helmet, mutual respect!
Verbruggen is the disgrace here. Another naysayer to put in your back pock.
21:30 "sorry about that", what a man.
Top sportsmanship by Boardman too
Fantastic story! I hope Graham is doing okay today. Great seeing him wearing Shorter Rochford gear, they had a bike shop in Finchley, north London, I’d be there every weekend on my BMX with a whole crew of kids.
Great documentary on a great man. Truly inspiring.
Still in Potters Bar
An absolute Legend in cycling history. Maximum respect. Great times in cycling.
Amazing film, could be a full length doc about this so incredible
If you look on RUclips there's a documentary called " battle of the bikes " which is similar to this but a lot more in depth . All about Obree and Boardmans rivalry .
There is a FEATURE LENGTH FILM about Graeme Obree with Brian Cox (from Succession) in it - great film !
Inspirational story and so well documented here. I met Graeme some years ago - very humble and a joy to speak with. A true innovator with the mental determination to match.
Loved this documentary! People like Graeme must be embraced!
I have been having this recommended to me for the past 12 months. I think now's the time to watch it.
When you see him at Herne Hill, you see how effective his position is. His torso, with arms tucked in remind me of a small bird...tucking in between wing beats. Amazing man.
what a gift this little documentary is. thank you for this
Thank you for making this. Wish he could be able to watch this incredible work.
?
thank u for the perspective. You don't need expensive, most up to date equipments/bike to train.
Graeme is a hero of mine, because he used low cost training technique's,a creative mind to design and build a bicycle that beat the world and yet he was always the local peoples champion. One of us that took on the world and won!!
Wonderful!
Every award for this special cyclist
Many thanks for posting this film
Never heard of any of this, or them, but this guys a legend! What an example of Flow when he’s riding that bike he made.
Really enjoying the editing and composition
Obree is a legend of cycling. You know you've done good when they ban your bike because your too fast lol
Great film about a truly great person. A true artist, uncompromising, unwavering from HIS vision. And, unlike the majority of artists, genuine outsider.
Graeme Obree is a legent, best TT cyclist ever
Absolutely spot on my friend
One of the best things I’ve ever watched. Was aware of the rivalry when I was a kid but had no idea of the detail. Bravo ❤
Touching documentary... pushing boundaries farther and challenging the limits.
I was in his son's class at school many years ago and have met Graeme several times. He's a lovely guy and so joyous to be around.
Much love to Mr. Obree from 🇩🇰 still remember the story of the washing machine build.. ❤️
To go for the hour record and fail but then to go again within 24 hrs . Amazing . Has to be one of the best rides in cycling history
All said below of his skills , Met him at English champs `25` in Beverley (Hull) Boardman won, Graham 2nd on I think 101/3 inch fixed, upside down drop bars!! A brilliant ride and nice all round bloke..Keep going
This video is beautiful. Deserves to be a movie.
Great documentary, I feel very guilty that I remember Chris Boardman so well but have no recollection of Graham Obree. It reminds me of "The Worlds Fastest Indian", a talented builder and racer defying the odds.
Beautiful documentary of a true legend. What dedication.
A great inspirational film of Graeme Obree.A phenomenal athlete and a beautiful human being.💜🌸♥️
What a fantastic documentary, thanks for sharing! Some man.
Truly one of the greatest cyclists of all time
I agree
0:35 no computer, no music, no zwift, no distractions. This man was a real athlete.
it was 1993 tho
What a guy absolute polymath and one of my favourite cyclists
Wonderful film. Wonderful story. I remember this from the time, but watching it laid out here shows you the establishment that Graeme was up against. Chapeau.
Where he is talking about the washing machine bearings: in bmx we call that a bottom bracket. The frame can be extremely weak around that area because it has so many weld areas, takes the brunt of your weight and has an axle inside it constantly undergoing pedalling momentum. For this guy to make a frame and bearing model from scrap parts is nothing short of genius, and I mean genius.
Yeah they're called bottom brackets in road cycling at least as well idk about mtb tho
bearings are bearing, nothing special.
@@ohhi5237 "nothing special" ok you go build a bearing with a friction coefficient that's less than the competition. Go on! Nothing special my arse.
I am endlessly fascinated by people’s obsessions with things like this.
