“The best bikes don’t get purchased and ridden out the door-the best bikes get purchased, ridden some, considered and then modified accordingly” TRUE. I got my old 2004 MTB bike with 26' wheels..and totally modified it. I painted it, changed fully transmission, handlebar, saddle, wheels. Now it's MY bike, for my NEEDS.
Just turned 87 this September. Been riding forever. A lifetime sport. Just traded my Lemond Zurich for a rather expensive Specialized eBike. Bought this for an expected move to a home up a long, steep hill in Washington state. That changed, but here in Tucson, Arizona I ride this one daily for 90 minutes up and down a local highway. Traffic zooms by at 65 mph, but you have to just accept it as part of the game. After my Dutch wife died, I traveled to Holland and rented a bike at a local bike shop. Rode that bike all over that great country. A very bicycle friendly country. Fietspads everywhere.

That is so true. I'm just a casual commuting utilitarian cyclist in rural Ireland but it's great to get out on my pretty basic Merida hybrid covered in racks and bags and mirrors and lights and all sorts of accessories that make it uniquely and wonderfully my own and do whatever I have to do instead of taking the car. Put one of my three trailers on and do the weekly household shopping, take the lawnmower in for a service, pick up 50 litres of tractor diesel. But as I'm getting older and had some coronary issues recently and developing arthritis in both knees and a hip I'm not going to apologise when I either add an electric conversion or/and get a full e-bike. Even without those reasons there's so much more I could do and further I could go with a little bit of "e"! And I do also own and need a car.

In this video, you have embraced what cycling and the love of bicycles is all about. I bought a bike 14 years ago, rode it 6 times and stowed it away for 13 years. Took it out, considered it, modified it and I ride everyday. It’s not a top end bike and some mechanics and bike shops make fun. But I love it and the freedom it gives me.

I miss living in Germany where I commuted with my bike no matter the weather. 45 minutes one way. Had a coworker/neighbor one day challenge me because I said it’s only a few minutes longer than with a car. He said he could beat me by fifteen minutes or more. He beat me by fourteen. What a wonderful short story. He found his dream job (though it's not a job), doing what he loves best, and doing it all with love for "the bike", Possibly the happiest bloke on the planet!
I’m turning sixty this year and I’ve been riding since I was four years old, began racing at the age of eleven, i don’t race any longer but i still practice as if i was. Sunshine, rain, wind or snow it don’t matter to me I’ll be out there riding my bike almost every single day.🚴♂️🤘
Ha! I used to draw manufacturer symbols! The Kona splat, Cannondale, Orange, GT, Trek, Specialized, Scott... I love bikes. Modifying, repairing, building, fettling and of course riding. The feeling of freedom and peace that lasts long after the ride is finished. The feeling of speed under your own steam. To rest atop a mountain or next to a river or just a Cafe before beginning the journey home, Bliss.
Happy to say that I was able to make the pilgrimage with the family to Sad Hill last week. I am so. happy to have the chance to gone and share the experience with my family.
I told my sister that I'd been researching bike maintenance and repair because I'm finally able to follow a passion of mine, and she mentioned this video. Super inspiring.. thank you. "Just ride"
Totally agree about just getting out and riding. Too many think they will be judged for the equipment they own. I have yet to meet a fellow rider who cares. They all just love to ride and enjoy others doing the same.
My favorite bike is the one I'm riding! They all have their own story in feel and rideability, 40-year cyclist! I own 14 assorted bicycles and love every one of them!
Indeed, so true: just ride. Someone once told me there are no bad, good or superb guitars. Only bad, good or superb guitar players. The hands, the movements, the technique and of course the inspiration of the player make a guitar sound bad, good or superb. So, just ride.
As a life long bike rider of many decades I totally agree and would like to offer more insight. Don't disparage e-bikes , as they often are. I recently pinched a nerve in my back to the point that I could barely walk and got tired of lying around getting better that I tried an e-bike for a short stint. No pain of any kind, then went further and further and to my amazement no pain. I now have an e-bike in the stable to rotate into my weekly riding style, they bridge the gap when you are not quite feeling up to it physically but want to mentally. I also ride motorcycle and get the same sort of enjoyment from those rides as well. All my rides on 2 wheels are great !
"Ride your bike" is the best quote ever and don't get stuck in one discipline otr way to ride as I was before when doing triathlon! After retiring of it I really discover the joy to ride by commuting, touring and just for fun 🤙
Cycling has become more than a sport I practice. It is now my life style. I cycle to work almost every day and I go for longer rides twice or three times a week. It is not about hom many kilometers I ride, but how much fun I have. I put on my earphones, get on the saddle and feel the joy and freedom.
I've loved riding since I was 5 years old. I'm 60yo and I ride 10-20 miles every day, weather permitting. One of the greatest joys and pleasures in life! I have a 15+yo Gary Fisher mountain bike that fits me like a glove and is just an extension and expression of myself. I hope to keep it rolling forever! Beautiful little film! TY
6:30 so sadly that the music stop there. I watched it like in August this year and you could hear the music back then but not it is blocked or something like that. It is sad because the song fit perfectly! And also you just absolutely nailed it. That is a masterpiece and this is what cyclist feel when he is outside riding his bike - pure happiness and freedom!
I love my midnight special! Same bike. Everything this guy is saying rings so true as having worked as mechanic. As an American traveling in the Netherlands experiencing their glorious infrastructure, I'm sad to see and hear that more and more people here are driving cars instead of riding bikes. Don't do that! Some are working hard to get more people on bikes in the US.
Just great... Particularly your current location... Tumut.... Grew up on a grazing property, about an hour away... Tumbarumba... Whole family, always bike mad.... Dad stopped riding at the age of 88.... I now reside in Tweed Heads.... Have not owned a car for over 12 years.... But, currently own 3 bikes, about to purchase another!!! So, terrific movie, on so many levels... Rock on....
This film beautifully captures how Ian's passion transforms routine maintenance into an expression of artistry and dedication, offering a compelling look at the unsung heroes behind the scenes of every cyclist's journey.
Perfect little film, such a breath of fresh air from the bs we are bombarded with today. “Get out and ride” no greater words spoken. Never forget 80% rider- 20% bike.
I got diagnosed with parkinsons and dusted off my 11 year old Specialized Crosstrail Sport and ride pretty much every day now. It's changed my life. Doesn't matter how old it is, it still does the job and I'll keep it going for a long as it holds up
My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s two years ago. He has now left his teaching job and is opening a bike shop. He notices when he does not get enough exercise because his tremors are worse and he is more stiff. We are prioritizing exercise (and biking is a big part of it) as we grow older. It is essential.
Damn, at the end of the video, a small man's tear rolled down my cheek. I look like a dinosaur in this country, I am grateful to RUclips and this person who showed me that I am doing well. ...it's not normal to live in a country where there are no bike paths and no cycling culture...
In 2019, at the age of 56, I started riding again after a 30+ year hiatus. I bought a new gravel bike this past Feb-23 and this year did 2300+ miles and 36.5k ft in climbing. I don't do the insane things I did on my BMX bike as a kid, but that same sense of freedom and flying is still there. I've dropped (and kept off) 40lbs, and my mental health is so much better. I'm glad it didn't take another decade to remember how much I love to ride.
Amen Brother! Amen! I'm getting ready to dig into my old '97 Schwinn Moab 2. Derailleurs (Shimano Rapid Fire, front and back) need a bit of finer tuning. Can imagine giving it over to a bike shop, so am doing the work myself. Believe at the most it's a cable change and an adjust. Oh, and for the record...I believe that he's living my dream! GIVE IT BACK! LOL!!!
31 years old now and never really had money growing up, believe it or not I recently just bought a bicycle about 2 years ago, to this day, nothing beats the feeling of just going for a ride, even if you don’t have a route, just ride.

Also the great thing about riding bikes is that it's many things to many people 🚲🚲
What a wonderful short story. He found his dream job (though it's not a job), doing what he loves best, and doing it all with love for "the bike", Possibly the happiest bloke on the planet!
I wish I had a fraction of his passion for anything.
“What people need is anything, well tuned.” I love that! And that wash station!!!
I am gonna savour this for my life. Thankyou sir.
I’m turning sixty this year and I’ve been riding since I was four years old, began racing at the age of eleven, i don’t race any longer but i still practice as if i was. Sunshine, rain, wind or snow it don’t matter to me I’ll be out there riding my bike almost every single day.🚴♂️🤘
Congrats, you understood, what bicycle riding is all about.
Doing what you love. Bliss. Thanks for uploading 👍
Recently started riding....and this is not just a video it's an emotion. #Respect from India
Yes yes yes to your heartwarming philosophy.
My favorite bike is the one I'm riding! They all have their own story in feel and rideability, 40-year cyclist! I own 14 assorted bicycles and love every one of them!
Now I got someone familiar 😃
Indeed, so true: just ride. Someone once told me there are no bad, good or superb guitars. Only bad, good or superb guitar players. The hands, the movements, the technique and of course the inspiration of the player make a guitar sound bad, good or superb. So, just ride.
I love It! Only a cyclist knows the feeling. Big thanks from Brazil.
Thank you for watching! 😊
Watching from Brazil too.
One of the best cycling videos I have seen! Just ride your bike!
Ian is like the badass wholesome uncle we all wish we had
Rock on....
This film and this guy are absolute gems. Loved it.
Just finished riding cycling is awesome 👌
I got diagnosed with parkinsons and dusted off my 11 year old Specialized Crosstrail Sport and ride pretty much every day now. It's changed my life.
Doesn't matter how old it is, it still does the job and I'll keep it going for a long as it holds up
Awesome!! Great for the mind, body and soul. Stay strong 💪
Love your outlook! Keep on riding.
Это круто! Велосипед лечит лучше всяких таблеток. Движение - это жизнь!
Aussieism: Camp-ag-nah-low. Haha. This video felt so good.
That ending just gave me goose bumps. Beautiful - from the technical and the storytelling party!
What a fabulous film and a top bloke. Sums up the joy of riding a bike .
Damn, at the end of the video, a small man's tear rolled down my cheek.
I look like a dinosaur in this country, I am grateful to RUclips and this person who showed me that I am doing well.
...it's not normal to live in a country where there are no bike paths and no cycling culture...
Spirit up bro💪, same with me here😁
it's normal, but very hard 😔 Together we make this culture)
'People don't need top shelf, what they really need is anything tuned well' -> couldn't agree more
Fascinating, inspiring story - we could all do with a local bike mechanic like him!
Hell yeah man! I totally agree you said it perfect!
A beautiful short film featuring a very interesting guy-and now I am going out for a ride-just because I can.
Best film I’ve seen all year
"Don't just romance the idea, ride." Awesome.
That was fantastic brother!!
Such an amazing person. Rider, Technician all together. Brilliant.
The best bikes don't get purchased and ridden out the door....ridden some, considered and modified accordingly. That is so good and true 👍
Wow!!! What a great movie. Congratulations from Brasila - Brazil. Best.
I’ll watch this later. First I have to go for a ride.
You've got your priorities in order! 🙌
LOL!!!
Amazing, no comments, simple but still very profound 🙏
31 years old now and never really had money growing up, believe it or not I recently just bought a bicycle about 2 years ago, to this day, nothing beats the feeling of just going for a ride, even if you don’t have a route, just ride.
Its not just riding but where you ride. Along the streets of Los Angeles, it creates more anxiety that is relieves.
@@krane15 i live in the country side here at Alberta, all mountain and forest views here, yeah biking through L.a might cause more anxiety and stress 🤣
As a bike store owner for over 12 years, I really liked your video.
Thanks for watching, we're glad you liked it!
I'm leaving in 10hrs for a ride across the USA. Virginia to Oregon. Can't sleep... Watching videos about riding bikes. I've got issues only a bike ride can solve my friends.
Are you going to present this on your channel? The experience?
I don't have a channel set up. Just taking pics and vids on my phone. It's been a great experience so far. Meeting some great people.
I can 100% identify with this film, most of the time I use my bikes for urban transport and I don't have a single new bike, I keep my old ones alive and they ride very smoothly....
Too many bikes? n+1........😄
Love the last third of the Video.
I would love to meet this man, hang out, and ride bikes.
Pretty cool, man. Bike and bike for ever until the last day!!! ;)
I already love to ride bikes… and this motivated me! Headed out the door
Cycling saved and changed my life forever!
Every ride is an adventure... commuting to work. For short and long touring rides. Hot or snowy cold days. I still manage to came home feeling like i'm in my young years(i'm almost a 50 yrs old dude).Long live to the bicycle world!!!
I possesed a Miyata710 back from 1983 ,it is on the indoor trainer now . I owned 2 Marinoni's 1steel frame from 1990 in show room condition, 1carbon from 2008 ,a caad 10 ,and a cannondale tandem thar i bought in 2017 . Whitout cycling i would be dead. I'm cycling 8,000kms a year more or less. I'm 69 and gonna be on a bike until the end !
Beautiful video and loved hearing someone who has the same passion for bikes as me. Thank you for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!
Having started to ride a 30 year old race bike again two years ago I really dig this film.
What an inspiring video for biking 🚴👏👏👏
Glad you think so!
Brilliant!, emotional, motivating!
Tom Byrne
I'm so glad RUclips showed me this film!!! Excellent job guys. Amazing short
What a breath of fresh air. I've always thought of bikes as human-powered machines too. This dude gets it. There is no other freeing feeling I can find that comes close to riding.
Your attitude is the future of cycling. And your business model is the perfect antidote to one make franchises. Thank you from the UK.
Agreed 100%
at 73 years old I ride my bikes every other day and enjoy restoring bikes and bike maintenance
Great vid...really inspiring...sold the car 6 years ago and bought 2 bikes....life changing.....If I lived near you I would be a regular
