An honest, extremely well-articulated account of the G95. Watching this video tipped the scales for me in deciding to actually purchase this camera. I have never been more impressed by a piece of technology. Ergonomical, functional and solidly built camera, I have no regrets. I photograph birds for pleasure and have had calendars made from the images shot with the G95. The AF or lack thereof has made me a better photographer for using manual focus 99% of the time.
I like that Lumix is not giving up their micro 4/3ds now after their introduction of their full frame system. It seems that they are aiming for the enthusiast and light-pro market with these cameras. That's very good. It gives at least enthusiast like me more options and promises for even more options in the future in spite of a shrinking market due to the introduction of the cameraphones. Thanks again for a brilliant camera evaluation! :)
I'm glad too, as someone who's invested in a GH5 and GH5S. I really think these two units are absolutely brilliant cameras, and as a set, they're great. Each one fills in the other's weaknesses. I think they're pulling a Fujifilm, in a way. Fujifilm has their crop sensor XTs and their absolutely monstrous medium formats, with nothing in between. Panasonic has their MFT cameras and their comparatively ginormous FF cameras. (Seriously, they're ridonkulously huge, like almost the size of a Canon 5D Mark IV). There's no APS-C line in between because... honestly, why bother? Their MFT range is full of extremely affordable bodies and pro bodies, and their FF line is all cadillacs. It's a beautiful setup really, and a a wise way to segment their market.
Man, you're a poet in dialogue cadence, and your voice is as recognized a commercial "branding" as any professional broadcaster I've ever heard, since Howard Cosell. You should absolutely be on Network Television! Your knowledge and analysis of the digital camera genre is also great too. Just love listening to you talk!
I like how you've concluded that these types of cameras and really the entire MFT platform is for photographers that think smart. I strongly believe in that too
Thank you for a calm, and calming review and comparison -- no hype or hyperbole! The current crop of all "major" names in the digital camera world are amazing compared to the camera offerings just 5 years ago -- so bashing any one manufacturer or model just isn't a viable approach. Each has its strengths, and as you say, it really comes down to how you use the equipment -- what you want to achieve. I bought a G85 in mid-2018 for family photos, family video and slowly branching into "production" with video. I don't regret my choice at all -- and it was what I could afford. Have gotten a few native lenses and a *ton* of vintage glass and adapters. And I still love it! Am I jealous of some features of other cameras -- yeeesssss -- am I jealous of newer Lumix cameras (G9, G95) -- yeeeessssss. But that does not make *my* camera any less usable. Thanks for your approach and your appreciation of good quality equipment -- regardless of the source.
Just picked up a new mostly video client and shot a 3 hour interview yesterday on my G9. The 30 minute recording limit drove me crazy. Definitely picking up a G95!
I love your content style, this is fantastic and engaging and watched end to end. .Thanks for this video, I just bought the G9 and it was close between.
I've pre-ordered this camera. The G95 will be my 1st mirrorless that I will use for travel. I love that this camera is truly a hybrid. Even though we all do video and probably have RUclips channels - really, in our hearts, we are all photographers. Thanks for the informative review.
My wife would kill me if I spent on full frame with big, heavy expensive lenses that are too bulky to carry. I used a G7 on several trips and am now ready to sneak a G95. If she caught me with a Nikon 850, it would be over!
I think this is one of the go to - all around - cameras for the next years. By the way, your "No recording limit" reminds me on Panasonic's Sean Robinson. His "No recording limit, no overheating", when the GH5 came out, together with the biggest smile possible was legendary.
I recently bought the G9 and I am so happy. I find it to be better in all respects than the Olympus OMD-E-M1 which I bought a few years back. I've been selling off all my Canon gear, bye bye Canon. I rented that lovely Leica 50-200mm, what a dream lens. The G95 doesn't tempt me at all since I have the G9. I'm glad that Panasonic isn't abandoning micro 4/3 like a certain you tuber was so convinced of.
As someone who just purchased a G85 and received it today, I totally agree. This camera is only $300 off from the GH5. If I'm spending that much then I might as well just go straight to the GH5
At first I was going to be a little ticked off that I just bought a G9 and this camera was going to be a baby G9. Then I heard no dual card slots, weather sealing or 4K60 and breathed a sigh of relief. The G9 has to be larger to include these features and to also have a comfortable grip. But the G95 will be a good option for people that want a smaller camera with more features and better tech than a GX85.
Thank for the pre view, I’ve been a g7 shooter. I’m upgrading to the g9 but the g95 made me stop and think. I shoot whirewater rafting and Micro four thirds just rocks my world for outdoor action photography. Small light and no tripod on rocky river banks. Thank again.
I truly enjoy your reviews. Your style is different from most as you give an honest opinion on what to expect from these equipment. Thank you and your team for making them. 👍
Camera decisions can involve so many considerations, including a large set of tradeoffs and comparisons, that I get overloaded. Especially if I want to be thorough and clear and accurate about the net result. My solution is caffeine. It kicks my mind into overdrive, and it's able to process the information sets more quickly and efficiently. It doesn't get bogged down to the point of stalling out.
You are truly a great speaker with a fantastic voice! I bet you could make us buy anything if you really wanted haha! Still it feels honest and well researched. Great job!
Nice summary. I just sold all my Nikon bodies and glass... Got a GX9 plus primes... What a breath of fresh air! A beauty to use a pleasure to shoot with...
I enjoy your common sense camera reviews. You know what works for you and you share that knowledge. I just want to say that that I appreciate your videos.
Just bought one! Thanks for the review, always a pleasure. What we need now, are a small 9 or 10 mm prime for MFT. To make MFT-cameras able to really become vlogging champs. Cheers.
So -- you use the G85 for a lot of your production -- do you have a post of tips/settings for getting the best performance (AF, stabilization, color, low-light) out of the G85 for photo and video? As a fellow G85 user with no money to upgrade anytime soon, I'd love to benefit from your experience!!! Thanks!
Actually, we don't use the G85 - we use the GH5. :) But we always shoot 4K UHD, 8-bit 4:2:0, Rec 709 internally recorded. See our setup in the show notes below. Really, at this point it's about the lighting and the audio - because the GH5 just plain works.
Great intro to the camera! Do you think it can outperform my GH4 for video? Running UHD 10-bit 4:2:2 to a PIX-E5H recorder. Thinking the increased mega-pixels would make it a no-brainer, but not sure if there's something I'm not taking into account. No 10-bit internal, however 10-bit external? Cheers!
Thank you for creating such a balanced and well structured review. For me, your overall assessment of the micro four thirds system was the final nudge I needed to upgrade to the G9 rather than switch to another format, the killer factor being the availability of fantastic glass at more affordable prices.
Still very good today I had this and then got a g9. Loved the g9 but missed the size of the g95 immediately. Those monochrome picture profiles are very good.
Was there ever a follow-up review to this preview? I’m building out a video podcast studio and having a heck of a time finding a camera that checks off all the boxes for around a grand. So many cameras check off most of my requirements but not all…unlimited record time, great auto-focus, side pop-out screen, mic jack at under $1000.
Very exciting bit of camera - the Gxx line of Panasonic cameras are my favourite hybrid ergonomically and from a lens lineup and functionality perspective, with that DSLR-like grip, but a shallower main body. Honestly the best middle ground since it accommodates anything from small primes to medium-big telezooms very well. Not quite a pocket shooter nor a pro size body, but so much versatility comes with that. Really appreciate the fact that Panasonic have moved the mic socket and added the Canon-style spinny wheel at the back for better image preview, some of the only things I really could've wanted improved on my G80/85. Very curious about potential improvements in IS, AF and detail/noise (after sampling down to 16MP for fair comparison to the predecessor).
Speaking of the X-T30, which you now have in hand (since your Feb 14th video) -- any chance of a follow up with a hands on experience of the X-T30? As a current Sony FF and APS-C user, I am seriously giving it a look following your prior and more detailed review of the X-T3. Thank you for your brilliant perspectives and insights.
Thank you, most important point ist that Panasonic is in regards to m43 in total normal upgrade mode. So can confidently expect a GH6 during 2020, not that there is real burning need for it actually except for a better upgraded sensor (not MP count but ISO). m43 will continue and will not go away in the foreseeable future. Like you pointed out, it is unrivalled in size and handling. It just feels like the old film Leica Ms and the first Nikon Fs with autofocus and all the other technology.
Totally agree. I have GX95 and the new 20MP is superb with less noise compared to g85. The only thing I would like to see on Lumix is good autofocus in video... Till than I use manual focus!
No 4K60? No dual SD? Small battery? No improved video AF? I stick to my G9 (with unlimited recording hack, I film longer than 30min on G9 with no problem) for now. Is Panasonic never going to fix video AF performance? They really don't care? G9 sells $999 in authorized Panasonic sellers new, $800 on second hand. I wish Panasonic would officially unlock unlimited recording on the G9 with a firmware update now that Europe doesn't have a 30min camcorder tax anymore. Is Camera Conspiracies correct when he says that many of Fuji's lenses (like the 16mm f1.4) aren't optimized for video autofocus usage? Is it true that Fuji video AF is jittery with those lenses when doing video autofocusing?
The difference between the G9 and G95 when it comes to unlimited recording is in part a function of the lower power draw of the G95's processor. Some of the FujiFilm lenses ARE in need of an update to be optimal in video use.
@@3BMEP but it's the same sensor as on the G9, right? So why didn't they just bring in the same CPU/DSP and the same battery as on the G9? Seems they downgraded a whole bunch and I think that's against the consumer. The camera market is hurting enough, camera companies don't need to inflict unnecessary harm to their own products, just in some kind of way to avoid self-cannibalization, that's just not going to help them grow their sales reach.
no way!!! Narcisistic people buy sell phones, use instagram, etc... I bet you probably own a smartphone...ehehe, I don't! ;) No, having a self LCD for people that love doing videos allows you to frame the shot right... I cannot afford a camera man to shoot my own stuff, sorry... that's why everybody needs a selfie LCD... get it?
Nice little camera :-) Holding thoughts is hard! On another tangent, While enjoying the general setup of your video, I was reminded of Jay Leno's "Tonight Show", when the giant floating head would appear and cause Kevin Eubanks to corpse with laughter. This is not a sniffy criticism, Hugh; I like everything about your studio and delivery. Thanks again,
Sorry, if you would choose me one thing what camera will you choose for me? (g95 vs a6400) , I use the camera for color grading, shooting vlog, mv I’m from thailand (answer me please)
Hi Hugh I notice you use the 30mm sigma in a ton of your videos (which always look fantastic). I do a lot of self tape auditions for myself and other actors on my GH5. I use the 42.5 Lumix 1.7 for pretty much all of them but sometimes find that when I want a bit more upper body in the shot the actors have to move a little too far away for my space. the 25mm 1.7 I find a little too wide and gets too much background in or I need the actor really close to camera. Do you find the 30mm 1.4 a superior lens to the 42.5? Have you noticed a difference in autofocus performance compared to native glass? I use face detect autofocus as I am usually the reader and the camera op at the same time and the actors do tend to move forwards and backwards enough where autofocus is important. Also, just curious what f-stop you do these vids at on the sigma? Thanks for any insight you can share with me :)
Austin Ball the 42.5 punches way above its weight class, but although we have one we rarely use it. I typically use the 30/1.4 around f/2.5 in the bat cave with manual focus. This gives me a little front/back wiggle room, with NO possibility of telltale contrast detect AF wobble. We just swapped out our Sony a6300 for an a6400 as our b-cam, and with its outstanding AF, the flip-over screen and E 50/1.8 it’s tough to beat as a one man band camera. But take a look at Gerald Undone’s vid on GH5 AF settings; pick up the 30/1.4 because it is spectacular for the price and will address your framing, and you should be good to go.
Hugh, Keep the great analysis. After watching many similar gear vlogs I feel I need to state something many other viewers may agree with. Most of us are not vloggers, we are strictly photographers who sometimes also use the video features (which is important too). The main reason I like the video features is that many of those items apply to still photography too (flip screen for instance is critical in many cases as is a good evf). And I do shoot at least some video in all of my field work. Do you think this emphasis on the use of a camera for vlogging as opposed to photography may take away from the message? After all, for every great vlogger (ie, you) there must be well over 1,000 photographers (not vloggers) and yes, I know from your work that you are a great photographer too. Thanks.
My new G85 arrived in the mail today. The same day that Panasonic announces the G95. Ugh! Honestly...the G85 is such a great camera on its own, I can't really see a huge reason to return it. IMO, the biggest advantages for the G95 over the G85, as a hybrid pro/amateur camera are the 120fps video and the V-LOG. Although these are awesome features, I think I'd just splurge the extra $300 at that point and get a GH5, and get all of the fantastic extras that come with that. Point is, I'll be keeping the G85 that I received today. If I find I'm pushing the limits of this camera, I'll go straight for the GH5 and remove all creative limits :) The new G95 looks like a fantastic camera, but I just find that the leap to the GH5 is so short, you might as well just go for it. If you're just starting out, the low price point of the G85 makes it a total steal and is not too different from the G95! Just my opinion. Excellent first look review.
Thoughts: G95 crops significantly at 4k - the crop is a very important consideration for vloggers, especially since the two camera bodies now cost the same. G9 doesn't come with vlog, but it's an option, and the time record limit is easily overridden on the G9. My only gripe with the G9 is no 120fps 1080p recording with decent codec. Other than that, it beats the G95 on everything but a bit of weight. The G95 would be my choice if not for the 4k crop. I'm going with the G9. Slightly different conclusion on my end, but thank you for the great review!
Many of the features of the G95 are also on the G85. What's new is the upgraded processor, USB charging/power, headphone jack, 20 megapixel sensor, upgraded LCD panel.. G85 has unlimited video recording (US only). Is the G95 worth the extra $500 over the G85? Depends on your needs. I think the G85 will be enough of an upgrade over my current G3 camera.
Hi! What did you shoot this preview on? Looks phenomenal. Maybe it's more the lighting than the camera...but man... this talking head segment REALLY looks good. EDIT... You answered it... The GH5. Man, that camera is good.
This camera makes the upcoming OM-D E-M5 Mark III critically important to Olympus...they simply MUST get that camera right (especially for video), and maybe that's why they've delayed it for so long.
Loved it, thank you. As a G80 user I am particularly interested in this. However with the G9 body price dropping I’m going to struggle with this choice.
I understand. Pixel shifting, no 4K crop, mongo EVF, 6.5 stops IS for the G9; no recording limit, smaller body and things like sequence composition for the G95...
Can you maybe check: Is there synchro scan or only flicker decrease included? (Synchro scan = freely shutter angle / shutter speed - Flicker decrease is only giving you 1/50 or 1/60 and "Auto".)
@@3BMEP Ok. So thats a feature then which stays in the GH class. Thx. ^^ (I expect that you meant, that there is also no freely adjustable shutter speed in single digit increments.)
thanks for the great video, can you suggest me a camera , my purpose is for my youtube channel and i need to get into short films. my budget is 1300 usd and i am considering sony a6400 ? can you suggest me please . thanks a lot !!
I know that this is an old thread. But, I have the Panasonic G6(as well as the GX80). I was thinking about jumping ship as the AF is not always very accurate. Would be interested to know if this camera is much better that either of these. Thanks
Have traded in the G85 for the Panasonic S1 as my top of the range camera. Still have the GX80 as my carry everywhere micro four thirds camera and to keep using my existing Panasonic G lenses. Waiting for the GX90 / 95 to replace that as my small , portable camera.

This guy is the most knowledgeable of all.
I shoot a7 iii for work, but I am leaning towards an x-t2 or g9 and now g95 for daily and travel camera.
As a G85 owner, I do not see a big diference. I would maybe consider upgrading if the bitrate is raised to 150-200 mbs and 4k 60p.

curious what your thoughts on this are, considering still being sold new by panasonic?

TheoTV I hear you!
No 4K60?
You say you have a hack for your G9 for unlimited recording? Where/how did you get this?
I have to agree with your comment about the quality of micro four thirds glass... yes, stunning.... am really enjoying your videos. Thank you...
Nice one! Going to NAB, Hugh?
Hey, Joseph! Nah, keeping the powder dry for the fall. See you in NY?
Did Panasonic release the g95 just offload a bunch of 12-60 kit lenses??
What kind of times do we live in, when all new cameras are measured and tested as a vlogging camea ?!? The great narcisistic time period ?
(g95 vs a6400) , I use the camera for color grading, shooting vlog, mv
I’m from thailand (answer me please)
I was thinking why is Hugh taking about a 4 year old camera? Some kind of philosophical lesson? Then I realized oh.....g NINE five.
But it's basically the same camera
great review...so entertaining...
Thanks.
Great review. I purchased after viewing your video. Keep up the good work.
ENJOY!
As usual, a superb video.
The perfect camera needs no photographer!
Keep on, Regards Ulf
Great video thank you very much!!! Does it still have that extra crop in 4k compared to 1080p like the g85 had or did they finally remove that?
Sorry Nope
G9 is a great cam.
Made that step myself, g85 is best value atm. Glad that Panasonic keeps listening and adressed some issues like mic jack placement with the g95...
Great information, and now the price has dropped!
Loved it, thank you. As a G80 user I am particularly interested in this. However with the G9 body price dropping I’m going to struggle with this choice.
UK street prices for the G9 and G90 are roughly the same.
AustrianGeek No shutter angle.
@@3BMEP Ok. So thats a feature then which stays in the GH class. Thx. ^^
(I expect that you meant, that there is also no freely adjustable shutter speed in single digit increments.)
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Good Audio man. What Mic do you use ?
Thanks. Check show notes - we always list our gear there.
Thanks. This was the Shotgun Mic I take it .. ? (Since you’re indoors).
@@justicemoody Yep!
thanks for the great video, can you suggest me a camera , my purpose is for my youtube channel and i need to get into short films. my budget is 1300 usd and i am considering sony a6400 ? can you suggest me please . thanks a lot !!
MR. BUCK MAN it’s very good for that!
I know that this is an old thread. But, I have the Panasonic G6(as well as the GX80). I was thinking about jumping ship as the AF is not always very accurate. Would be interested to know if this camera is much better that either of these. Thanks
G95 is a definite upgrade from GX85 just starting with the EFV alone, trust me if you haven't ALREADY.. get one now.
Thanks Hugh! Long live MFT! 📷
You can do a review on pancake batter and I would still subscribe! Great review 👍🏻
Great reev. As a side job, you should be voice actor!
Holy crap 😱 selling my G85!
What do you see as the critical factor? The resolution?
Sold mine a month ago in anticipation ofthis guy! !
The headphone jack, 120 fps slow motion, and vLog L are significant upgrades. And, yes, the resolution. But my G85 is not going anywhere.
Have traded in the G85 for the Panasonic S1 as my top of the range camera. Still have the GX80 as my carry everywhere micro four thirds camera and to keep using my existing Panasonic G lenses. Waiting for the GX90 / 95 to replace that as my small , portable camera.
Frank O'Deorain Great combo!
People..... never knock M4/3 because its always wanted and required by people like me...
Great video Hugh
