Hey guys nice review. I just ordered the baby brother to the G85, the G7, and the Zhiyun Crane. I can't wait to see the footage I'm going to get with it in some of the videos I have planned.
I'd say the actual baby brother of the G85 is the GX85. :P Which btw is great if you don't need audio out of it or the Cinelike profiles. Especially hooked up with the Leica 15mm f/1.7! LX100 footprint.
the G7 could also be looked at as the baby brother of this camera since the body is very similar and is more what people were expecting the G7 upgrade to be
Most valuable information here is definitely that the 96fps on the GH4 has compression artefacts and are not as good as the 60fps video footage. Thank you
Great review, guys. I've been considering the G85 as a companion for my GH4. This might put me over the top, but that GH5 has been whispering in my ear.
Ilari Stenroth When using an external recorder, I would like to know if the camera screen and the recorder screen both display what is being filmed. I'm asking because the screen goes blank on G7 once the record button is pressed.
Good video. I suggest trying all the auto-focus options and see the one that works best. Center based, continuous on or off single...and then even try between spot, face, etc.
Nice review! YOu are talking about the bad AF in video. I have watched many similar reviews confirming the unreliable AF on G85 and GH5. Which camera is your recommended for vlogging. So far each one I review has some advantages and some disadvantages.

Hi guys, and thanks for the nice review. I purchased the G80 (in Sweden) a couple of days ago. I might have screwed up all the settings and have landed in no mans land regarding the IQ. You have some beautiful shots of a street and some overviews of a city. They look absolutely stunning on my computer..may I ask you please what kind of settings you used..??
Nice review, sounds like a fairly good all around system. I was noticing your local in the video, where was that filmed?Looks like a beautiful and interesting place to be.
Hello my friend from Atlanta Georgia thank you for sharing this great camera I really appreciate it I thought your presentation for both of you were excellent thank you again I subscribe to your Channel
Hy Tom, Do you know if G80 model got HDMI LIVE mode and keep sending video signal trough the HDMI out put during filming ? ( My DMC-FZ300 LUMIX shutdown the monitor and give me a nice black window !!! ) PS : Same limitation on GH7
Tom your brother's hat is tripping me out man real psychedelic effect there. Good reviewing points though. As always keep up the good work and thank you for your videos it's "far out" man.
Yeah the stripes/lines in your hat was causing a serious "morie effect" on one of my computer monitors when i first watched this video the other day. It was really cool a dazzling effect but man was it distracting.
just bought G85. is there a button to playback video on the Lumix G85 other than the touch screen button?. i’m trying to view playback on a field monitor.
What about the 14-140 mm II lens? I'm confused about the difference between dual IS 1st gen and 2nd gen? On panasonic website it just specifies which are compatible with dual IS and that's it. What's the difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen then?
I really enjoyed this clip thanks. I think I'm decided on getting the Panasonic G85 (over the Sony a6500). My only concern is the low light on the Panasonic when taking video and photos at live music sessions. Would having the Panasonic 25mm 1.7 or 25mm 1.4mm significantly help with this? And if so much difference between the 1.7-1.4 at double the price?? I know not at the level of the Sony... 😃 I borrowed a canon 700D to test for a month using the 50mm 1.8 lens (the cheap plastic canon one) and it was pretty good. Maybe a bit more light would have been nice. Would the Panasonic G85 be better/worse/same as this? Maybe running at 4K would actually make the footage even worse in low light compared to 1080 on a Canon 700D The Canon had awful autofocus most the time so I had plenty of practice with manual focus, started to get decent at doing that. I've seen the autofocus is kinda not so good on the Panasonic. I'm going to be mainly video (with photos every now and then) doing interviews, recording b-roll close up footage of live music to cut in with a GoPro and iPhone as static tripod shots, run n gun style hand held clips with music equipment at meet ups/interviews, tutorial/music equip overviews. I think I'd like the Sony a6500 but the over heating really worries me - especially when doing tutorial style clips - wanting to record and hour to chop up later, and the non flip screen would make it a real pain to do self filmed clips. As well as the extra costs of the Sony (could get an LED light, extra mic, decent tilt head instead). Thanks to anyone who has read this... sorry for the long winded comment. The torment haha, first world problems when gear researching on a budget 😅
I would actually be worried with those DSTE imported batteries. They fried my GH2 back in the day (well almost, the camera was salvageable). I like Patona a lot, a European brand, so you also know they comply with standards and warranty and all that. With DSTE you're really cheaping out on the wrong thing. They're the cheapest, but when it comes to batteries, I figured it is better to spend a little more for something that's actually to be trusted... so like Patona, Ex-Pro, ChiliPower, etc.
It's the same for Samsung Note 7... it's always fine... ... until it's not. And then you have a Chinese import battery you cheaped out on ruin your valuable camera. Just my 2cts. Don't go original? Ok. But be careful with the cheapest stuff out there.
There are two sides to a coin... it flips either way. I've had it seen fall on both sides. Don't expect to always get lucky. Again, just from my own experience a fair warning and advice. Do what you want with it.
Hey Tom, I've been testing the G85 at my local camera store. And I can't for the life of me figure out how to map the audio gain control to one of the physical function buttons. Do you know if this is even possible or are we stuck with using the touch screen only?
If by quality you mean a sharp and good looking image then the G85 will give you very good results. If you need to do a lot of post processing and have a bigger budget then GH5 is better as it records in 10bit 4.2.2. If you use the G85 correctly then yes it will be more then enough.
yes true. with the G95 was just a thought :-) but am sure they update the G85 soon. i am looking for a cam for videography. the lumix fz 300 has many features from the G85.
I like the content, but d*mn annoying that the guy on the left (apparently Tom's brother?) can't say ANYTHING without Tom cutting him off. Does the brother have a channel? Would love to subscribe to him, not to Tom. 07:49 for instance, what a dick move man.
Can't wait to see your reviews and work using the GH5

Dark Horse Films thanks Pete!
Great review but Hey Tom, next time let your brother talk, he was doing a pretty good job but you kept cutting him off.
Final Cut Multimedia I know ;-)
hell yeah, lol :-)
@@TomAntos Good that you know. Don't do that.
Preordering my GH5 this week. Selling all my canon stuff. Great review guys.
Great review, guys. I've been considering the G85 as a companion for my GH4. This might put me over the top, but that GH5 has been whispering in my ear.
On G85 it's actually 4:2:2/8-bit HDMI out, but yeah, the same as Sony A6500.
Ilari Stenroth When using an external recorder, I would like to know if the camera screen and the recorder screen both display what is being filmed.
I'm asking because the screen goes blank on G7 once the record button is pressed.
Which fps setting is recommended for making movies to be shown on Tv ? 4K 24? Full HD? Confused...
My camera, with the 12-60mm kit lens. Also with a Camdiox focal reducer to use my very old Pentax KA mount lenses :)
Good video. I suggest trying all the auto-focus options and see the one that works best. Center based, continuous on or off single...and then even try between spot, face, etc.

Great honest review, guys.
Hi. Did either of these two cameras solve the problem of the g7 that cancels the image of the external monitor during the recording?
When using an external recorder, I would like to know if the camera screen and the recorder screen both display what is being filmed.

Where you guy located? That looks alot like Colombia. Beautiful
Ecuador

No blackouts when you're using a field monitor even when recording.
Do you think the smaller crop factor in 4k is a big advantage of the g85 over the gh4?
2:23 that battery has 1700mAh and the G85’s battery is 120pmAh. You need 1200 or it works with the higher 1700?
Tom your brother's hat is tripping me out man real psychedelic effect there. Good reviewing points though. As always keep up the good work and thank you for your videos it's "far out" man.
lol. I really like that hat, but I might have to ditch in when filming myself
Yeah the stripes/lines in your hat was causing a serious "morie effect" on one of my computer monitors when i first watched this video the other day. It was really cool a dazzling effect but man was it distracting.
audio of this vid seems overdriven?
what gear did you use? are you using any kind of limiter?

brassmonkey which camera did you end up purchasing?
Top review guys !
Thanks !!
Question: DOES the Cine-D match the Gh4 Cine -D or does it vary slightly? I am asking because I want to use Gh4 Luts and wonder if they match 100%.
the video has been uploaded in 4K / 2160p, although RUclips still has not made this version available - it's taking a long time
It's been slow lately. Since h.265 is much harder to process, I don't think RUclips will be allowing H.265 for quite awhile.
I think they'd prefer that we use VP9 down the line, not h.265
Which camera did record this video?
And what lenses can you recommend for the G85
12-35 2.8
25 1.7
45 1.8
Looks like you guys were at Guayaquil, Ecuador recently :) Hope you go to Montanita soon XD
Nvm I just saw the Montanita footage :p
Was the kit lens use in many of the videos clips? most were very crisp clips
what is the point of co-hosting but not letting the other speak freely?
Can I know which camera was used to shoot this video?
Gh4

I have several dste batteries for my g7 and they work great.
It's the same for Samsung Note 7... it's always fine...
... until it's not.
And then you have a Chinese import battery you cheaped out on ruin your valuable camera.
Just my 2cts. Don't go original? Ok. But be careful with the cheapest stuff out there.
I've been buying cheap batteries since 2010 when I bought the t2i. They always work great.
There are two sides to a coin... it flips either way.
I've had it seen fall on both sides.
Don't expect to always get lucky.
Again, just from my own experience a fair warning and advice. Do what you want with it.
I will continue to buy cheap batteries. Thanks for your advice
what type of sd card do you use for 4k video? Have you experienced any writing problem with it?
Which would you recommend as a first camera for a beginner filmmaker, the g85 or the gh4? Thanks!
@Zack Darce She wasn't asking you...
@Zack Darce Relax Darcy. Just the facts ma'am
Did you shot this at 30fps, or 25fps? I see a lot of juddering at 3:50 on my Mac Retina 13".
I see the judder too (Win10 64-bit I5 8GB if that makes any difference)
What do you think about the Panasonic Lumix FZ2500?
do you guys have a link to which microphones you are using?
Hey Tom,
I've been testing the G85 at my local camera store. And I can't for the life of me figure out how to map the audio gain control to one of the physical function buttons.
Do you know if this is even possible or are we stuck with using the touch screen only?
raredreamfootage I've had the G85 since December and I think it can't be done. At least I haven't found a way to do it.
Unfortunately you can't do that
which is the movie about 6:30?
For a better videomaker the g80 or the gh4?
Tom! is this a good camera to use as an entry level Film maker? Is the Quality of image less than the GH Series?
If by quality you mean a sharp and good looking image then the G85 will give you very good results. If you need to do a lot of post processing and have a bigger budget then GH5 is better as it records in 10bit 4.2.2. If you use the G85 correctly then yes it will be more then enough.
Hey, what's the difference between the G85 and GX85? Is there a difference, or are they the same camera?
look at pictures of them on bhphoto or google
D. Mic jack
GH4 has no I.S. right?? as well is not weather sealed like the G85
yes, you're right on both points
end of this year there will be the G95 with 4k/60fps and FHD 120fps ;-)
There is always a better camera around the corner. That's how they keep us buying ☺️
SetMusicFree thanks for the tip
yes true. with the G95 was just a thought :-) but am sure they update the G85 soon. i am looking for a cam for videography. the lumix fz 300 has many features from the G85.
Excellent!!
Guy on left more honest about the camera than guy on right. Moire all over cap
where is that beautiful country?
Guayaquil, Ecuador :)
Not worth selling G7?
Exactly! G7 gives you the same results.
hdmi out!
Its OK low light.. Nothing close to an A6300 for example but surely better than the gh4
Get better glass. It's great
Looks like a great b cam...
You talk a lot about the camera's features, but fail to show extensively its footage. The best reviews do the opposite, guys-
cool
In 1080p the continious af is fast and accurate...but you guys shoot everything in 4k thats why you have slow af
and panasonic g8 for japan
I found GH4 AF consistently faster than G80.
I like the content, but d*mn annoying that the guy on the left (apparently Tom's brother?) can't say ANYTHING without Tom cutting him off. Does the brother have a channel? Would love to subscribe to him, not to Tom. 07:49 for instance, what a dick move man.
Moire?
Hans and Franz!
What camera? All I saw was that blonde. Wawa. Wow
14:33 lol such a cliché, let's dance on a roof like a typic boiband
Tom! I love your videos. But they are too yellowish mostly! Smth wrong with your colors!
First?!?! Haha
What feature film was shot on the gh4?
