Man, I gotta say I really appreciate you shooting and making content around smaller camera bodies like this. This industry is super dominated by over-the-top cinema rigs - which I love, don't get me wrong - But it's important to understand that not everyone needs a camera to be ultra kitted to still get pleasing video. I shot with a GH4 from 2014 to 2019 and have a soft spot for minimalist video rigs, I guess :)
One of my favorite cameras of all time. It's the only one I regret getting rid of. If Panasonic had better auto focus or an apsc sensor in it i'd switch back in a heart beat.
I just bought this camera a couple months ago, been super busy being back to work so I haven’t used it much. I got the same cage, I got the smaller “RED” style top handle and a Lilliput A5, with the top handle and monitor they sit right over that right hand side cold shoe so I bought a side handle with a cold shoe for the cage so I can add a mic, the whole thing built is much bigger than I wanted. I may swap out some parts for stuff with nato mounts so I can change it up more quickly on the fly. Great video though, cool to see so many others still using this camera.
natural all dialled down was exactly how i shot with that camera too. it will be interesting to see what they do next with that model. imagine it got the new color science from the BGH1 and GH5 II? even the latest AF updates panasonic released for those MFT cameras are really great. still have my doubts on the future of MFT but can’t deny it’s power to price ratio.
Yeah for sure, if the next model was still at the price point as these consumer end cameras but with the AF of something like the S5 and maybe even cine-D2 or something that would be sick!
@@NigelBarros you are the best , i appreciate every video you make. thanks for getting up in the morning and have us on your mind. these vid's are something special .
Just bought this camera and loving it. Like your setup tips. Thanks to you I also just bought the GH-3 used for my B camera. Really enjoy your channel!
These are such great cameras and I bought mine when it first came out. I don't like the mic port being in front of the screen when I flip it out, and that has me liking the G9's placement of this port so much more. Regardless, I'll be holding on to the G85 until it dies. *Hello from Tokyo.
As a G80 owner I'd never recommend shooting CineD with contrast at -5. The 8 bit file does not hold enough information for that and you'll get more noise and banding. Always keep it at 0.
I love these G85's.. I have 4 of them all with Small rig cages for my livestream company and the Standard picture profile for live broadcast is epic. Would you release any luts that work best for this camera based on your picture profile settings?
The g85/g7/gh4 in there standard and natural picture profiles produces some of the best straight out of camera images. Unfortunetly the newer s series of fullframe camera from panasonic doesn't have a good standard or natural picture profile, but the cinelike d v2 on the s5 and s1h is the best.
@@Aviciiz The s series cameras have a weird desaturation in the shadows with their natural and standard picture profiles, I think in canon pro cameras you were able to adjust it in a setting called "low key saturation". But cinelike d v2 does not have any of those problems, very stunnig colors and highlight roll off. I basically shoot vlog for video and cinelike d v2 for photos.
@@imabigsandwich1292 I agree with you that the desaturation looks pretty bad. For video V-log is best and CineD2 is probably the best 8 bit profile of any camera i love the shadows and highlights. For photos I use the landscape profile. Similair contrast to the standard but with much more saturation in the shadows. You should give it a try!
I love this minimalistic approach for rigging up a camera. Did it very similar with GH4, GH5 and, sorry ;), the ZV-1. But with one addition you maybe like too: A magnetic loupe for the screen. I reccommend the brand "kinotehnik". Great for outdoors and stability. Sometimes i use a pistolgrip too, then it almost feels and looks like an old Super8 camera :-D !
I have been wanting to start making short movies and i am wondering what the lens is you were using in this video. I have a super low budget and I know nothing about cameras...
DSLR videoshooter mentions that Natural with all the settings in -5 is better than Cinelike D with the same settings because of its artifacts that doesn't allow to recover details in textures. What is your opinion?
Im thinking of making a small rig for my G85 I just picked up a 14mm lens for it this is my first dslr camera i recently bought from a friend of mine what lens and cover do you have on your rig?
Ok you got me interested in this… I’m looking more so at the G95 because the price difference isn’t exponential. But here’s the thing… autofocus…. Has it been updated in these cameras like it has on the GH5?
I have G9 and still can’t rely on autofocus, even after the last update, it’s better even on my iPhone. If you need a good autofocus then probably the whole Panasonic family isn’t the best option for you.
Yeah Hubert is right, I wouldn’t rely on AF for most Panasonic micro 4/3 cameras. They’re full frame line is better but obviously more expensive, the talking head portion of this video was shot on the S5 in continuous AF and it worked out pretty well
Blake, I think the G95 has a tighter crop in 4K, so maybe check that (if that's an important issue for your shooting). The slo-mo of the G95 is a nice feature to have, though (not present on the G85, but is on GH4).
Brother I'm sorry to ask such a stupid question, but I'm new to cameras. I am a film student who has specialized in working in 3D (Blender, Unreal Engine 5, etc). My question is this. I LOVE the Panavision camera used in the 1980's on films like Predator and Blade Runner. I am trying to figure out what kind of camera setup today I would need to make something that could replicate that exact same look from the 1980's. Do you know of a budget friendly way to do this? Or am I expecting something unrealistic?
Not in movies or tv, mostly just operating for other channels and I was a cinematographer for a non profit for many years. Before that I was a skate filmer
@@NigelBarros you definitely have a bright future with whatever you choose to do. Thanks for making these videos man, it helps young filmmakers more than you can imagine
You can easily mount a top handle and a mic by using a Cold Shoe Extension. In fact, that might be the better option if those are the only two accessories you're trying to mount (I personally have a top handle with an included cold shoe that i mount my microphone to, which makes the setup even easier!). The cage is only really useful if you need to mount lots of different accessories on your camera, as well as providing a little bit of extra protection to the camera body. Hope this helped!

It’s coming!
Use hue vs hue in lumetri to push the skintones from yellow to red. Done.
but my question is why you need a 4K video whats the advantage and which lens did you use?
Please make a video about how to focus using g85
Have you used this camera together with the olympus 12-40?
How well you think a G85 could pair with an S5 as a b cam? Recently got an S5 and not sure if I should sell the G85…
And what about the step-up Ring? It would be nice to watch a vídeo from tou, about It!

Digital sharpening looks very “video/camcorder” like. It’s better to add sharpening yourself in post.
