Gary Richrath was one of the most underrated guitarists to ever tune up. I saw REO six times in this era and they never disappointed. They were always just that good. I think you might have reacted to the studio version of Golden Country, but in the live version on this live album, Gary just goes right off. I always said he was toying with that Les Paul like a cat toys with a mouse.

It's really strange to me becuz the vast majority of people have a view of REO a certain way, more the way they became when they became more commercial. Lot of love songs, and more formal...I guess. I'm not sure how to describe what it is. But, I started listening to them very early on. The original guitarist Gary Richrath, was a beast! But this gives an impression of the way they were early on. Very dynamic concerts, more raw, edgy. They became too polished. And, fired Gary!

Gary Richrath, the lead guitarist, was born in my hometown, Peoria, IL and grew up in East Peoria. I went to Peoria High School in the mid-to-late 70's and REO played a lot of our mixers and dances before they hit it really big. They were local legends before they attained world-wide fame. I'm a fan of their rockier stuff. Their pop stuff less so.

I returned home from Vietnam in 1970 and the rocks clubs in Milwaukee were just kickin' ass with the bands that were coming to town. I first saw REO at a club called Humpin' Hannahs on the East side of Milwaukee. We were actually going there to see a different band ( whose name I don't recall ) that was cancelled and the replacement band was REO SPEEDWAGON. What a night ! $5.00 cover charge 50 cent mixed drinks. Always went to see them when they were in town. Saw Styx , Cheap Trick and Joe Walsh at Hannah's and it was always a great time. Asia and BJ I just went to see REO on Sept.6th in Moline, Illinois .Styx played that night 🌃 also. I grew up on REO Speedwagon their best music was in the 70sand early 80s. With there original 🎸 guitar player Gary Richrath. I grew up in Galesburg, Illinois and Gary Richrath grew up in Peoria, Illinois. Most of the rest of the group were from Champaign Urbana, Illinois area . Kevin Cronin. The second singer in the group has done a great job keeping the band together all these years . But Gary Richrath will be missed RIP Gary. Dave Amato has been on the guitar 🎸 since Gary left the band
But Gary was a very , very underated guitar 🎸 player . The You Get What You Played For is one of the best live albums ever recorded. So for now Peace ☮️ Out and God Bless

I remember seeing these guys warming up the stage at Soldier Field Chicago, the summer of 77 just before Ted Nugent turned that place on its ear.
They called that concert the, Superbowl of Rock. We were down on the field 40 yards in front the stage, surrounded by 65000 screaming fans still on a high from the high powered Boogie of REO Speedwagons closing number. 157 Riverside Ave.
Their performance that day was ? Electrifying. I sure do miss those days.

I went to see the Eagles in I think 1976 and REO Speedwagon opened for them. I was 12. Never heard of REO but by the end of their set they were my favorite band! The Eagles actually seemed like they were too mellow after REO's show. I don't think they opened for them for long.

Joe Walsh one made a reference to musicians in this era TESTIFYING...and each guy in the band, especially Gary Richrath was TESTIFYING here.

You're enjoying REO Speedwagon because you're listening to the right REO Speedwagon. Don't listen to anything after 1979.

I saw them do this live in 1977 in Chicago at Soldier Fiels I was on the field about 50 ft from the stage The concert started with .38 Special, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Lynard Skynard and then Ted Nugent Actually it was 2 months before the plane crash in Magnolia Mississippi that took the lives of 3 of Lynard Skynard's bandmates.

Per Kevin Cronin: There really is a 157 Riverside Ave.
    One word about Gary NAS-T😈
For awhile this was my favorite song. It's always been my favorite REO.
I know you'll have to do the newer stuff because it's what you do but you
will see it's not near as good as everything before "Hi Infidelity"
Others have pointed out other gems. Check them out you won't be sorry.
The best version of this is on the "Decade of Rock and Roll" album. LIVE😎
They're currently touring with STYX and Loverboy.😎😎😎

I just looked this up. The bass player is Gregg Philbin. I bet Kevin Cronin calls him Regis as in a 'Regis Philbin' joke on his name.

A & B....Have to say, feel like you got cheated. The better live version of 157 can be found on the double live album "A Decade of Rock and Roll." That version is crazy good and leads right into Riding the Storm Out too. One love!

While any version of 157 is great, I've always enjoyed the studio version of A Decade of Rock better. The story's a little different and, in my opinion, a lot more fun.

A terrific and old school rock . They sounded nothing like this when I saw them a few weeks ago at Jones Beach Theater on Long Island with STYX. Bland and uninspiring. STYX still had the energy, drive and even a couple of good, though short, new tunes!

What's amazing to me is that even with the tech we have today, the super bands of the 60's through the 90's are unmatched to this day. I think that all the tech actually has taken away from creativity and there's a lot to be said for just focusing on the basics. 🎼🎵🎶🎹 It's all about the music.
