    The lead guitarist on this song, Gary Richrath (RIP) was a criminally underrated guitarist. This was the more commercial album that took them over to really great success. Some of their other great songs include "Golden Country," "Keep Pushin'," "157 Riverside Avenue," "Riden' the Storm Out," "Like You Do," and the instrumental "Flying Turkey Trot," which allows Gary to show his guitar chops.

    REO was one of those bands that both the guys and girls wanted to hear back in the 80's. An REO Speedwagon is a classic old school classic truck, interesting history lesson if ya look it up and read about it. From someone who grew up with this band at the peak of their popularity in the early 80's, if you want to review the bands best songs, then look up "Time for Me to Fly" from '78 or "Take it on the Run" from 1980. Those, in my opinion are the bands two best overall songs. But anything from either of those albums "You Can Tune a Piano but ya can't Tuna Fish" (1978) or "Hi Infidelity" (1980) is a winner in my book.

      I can remember this one from the "mid-70's" and remember seeing that they were "Headlining" the "Shell Club", in Shirley, MA one night, in either 1976 or 7... I had the desire to go, but, can't remember why I did not! (After thinking about that, for a while; I'm pretty sure I was working 4×days a week in Groton and 3×nights a week, in Tyngsborough!).... {Man, THAT'LL really "cut into your drinking time" in a serious way!!!}

    Too bad the "changes" they were talking about was their change in their overall product with "Hi Infidelity" It got them their
    well-deserved millions but was a drastic change to the dark side of HI. I bought the album the day it was released. Listened
    to it twice and sent it to my 12-year-old sister and said you're gonna love this. She didn't. She couldn't even believe it was REO.
    THIS was the good stuff. It's a crime they're not in the R&R HOF

    REO Speedwagon was my first real concert. It was somewhere around 1985 in Fargo, North Dakota. The opener was a guy named Richard Marx. My friend had his farmer's drivers license so we got tickets and drove an hour to see the show. His brother had recently come home from a hitch in the Navy and had brought home a few souvenirs, which included some super-duty smoke bombs. Partway into the second song by Marx, a smoke bomb was ignited. The show stopped, the house lights came up, and the place was filled with smoke and cops. About 45 minutes later, REO came onstage and did their thing. Good times.
    REO is playing an outdoor venue in my small Idaho town this summer. If I get the chance, I wanna ask the guys if they recall the smoke bomb incident in Fargo 38 years ago.

    In 1967, Neil Doughty (keys) transferred to the University of Illinois and on his first day met Alan Gratzer (drums), who was already in a band, but after Doughty sat in a few times, Gratzer suggested they form a new band. Soon, Doughty walked into his History of Transportation class, and saw the name REO Speedwagon (an early fire engine) on the blackboard. And voila!
    As far as names go, the best story has to be Jethro Tull, who were being sent out by their manager on club dates, under a different name each date, so that if they got a bad review it wouldn't stick to the band. They literally didn't know which name they were using until they got to the venue. One night they got a GOOD write up and they were using "Jethro Tull" that night, so they stuck with it. (The real Jethro invented the steam-powered loom back in the 1700s.)
    You will definitely enjoy more great keyboard work from Doughty and more fine lead guitar by Gary Richrath, as long as you stick to their 1970s work, rather than the over-commercial #1 hits of the 1980s. I suggest digging into their 1977 live album "You Get What You Play For" because they were a wonderful live act (Gratzer never let the pace sag while other drummers sometimes get languid), which is why the record company stuck with them through three different singers and six weak-selling albums. (Then the live album got a good response and the next one had this and they went from there.)
    Start right at the beginning with "Like You Do" and plow on through to the epic finale, "Golden Country". You won't be upset that you did.

    This may be a live concert, but that is the studio version music playing. I know because I've played that song over 200 times. Usually in a live concert, a song is played at a different tempo, either a bit faster or a bit slower, and instruments sound different. HOWEVER, this is still a good rockin' song. One that makes me press down on the accelerator pedal more. That Hammond B-3 player! Yeow!

    REO had such great chops, musically, lyrically, their harmonies, that they were regularly name-checked along with Journey back in the day. I distinctly remember feeling like they were basically two equally big bands, at the time, but y'know, I was only 13.......

    REO was the first concert I took my kids to. They were about 8 and 10. They are now 36 and 38, and still love REO!

    When I hear this I’m right back walking the high school hallway in my Jordache jeans, cowl neck sweater and clogs. Great memories!
