      While I agree with you, he was also his own worst enemy. He could not quit the drinking and drugs and his health suffered for it. I just hope he's up in heaven having guitar duals with Eddie Van Halen. THAT would be something to se..

    REO's 70s stuff was seriously hard rocking. As they worked their way into the 80s, they - like Journey - pursued a slightly different, more commercial friendly path. It brought in more fans (i.e. women), still had a rocking edge, but wasn't quite as hard as their previous 70s stuff.

    Time for Me to Fly, off of the same album, 157 Riverside Avenue, Golden Country, On the Road Again. Anything off the live album, as they are a great live band.

  • @stevedahlberg8680

    Also, Golden Country, the live version which exists as a radio track independent of any video you might find with it. Plus there is obviously also literally live video of them playing it, but the live radio hit was something that got played all the time. It's a great and clear version. But really it's all good they were a fantastic life band. Rest in peace Gary Ritchrath.

    REO Speedwagon was popular in the early 80’s but got a bad rap because two of their biggest hits were rather trite ballads. But people forgot or overlooked their true jammers like this that made them such a good band. And Gary Richrath (RIP) was a great guitarist.

    Great reaction to my favorite REO song and one of the best tunes from the '70s! The band here is the very definition of "tight," and Neal Doughty's Hammond solo still sounds as amazing today as the first time I heard it on the radio 45 years ago. 😎 Thanks again for the reaction and your analysis, so glad you liked it!

  • @stevedahlberg8680
    @stevedahlberg8680 10 месяцев назад +6

    This is one of my favorite songs of theirs and you know that kind of middle late section where all the choir of backing vocalists are singing those perfect harmonies but still with that rock edge? They're repeating the phrase, keep on rolling, and even that has some pretty cool syncopation to it. But when I saw them live back in the day, they got the whole audience singing that part along with it in this small to medium sized arena. And it was deafening on top of their really loud sound and everybody was so into it and then Kevin Cronin could just verbally just start and vocally just start riffing off all of that and he was just so good at it and the band's going nuts and all that. They were a fantastic live band.
    Time For Me To Fly is another good one from this earlier era of REO.

    This was one of my favorite songs for a minute. I love the change over from Neil on the piano/keyboard to Gary 😇guitar.
    Too bad the "changes" they were talking about was their change in their overall product with "Hi Infidelity" It got them their well-deserved millions but was a drastic change to the dark side of HI. I bought the album the day it was released. Listened to it twice and sent it to my 12-year-old sister and said, "you're gonna love this". She didn't. She couldn't even believe it was REO.
    It caused a riff in the band. Gary left.😭 I agree with him.
    THIS was the good stuff. It's a crime they're not in the R&R HOF
    A few other great REO late 70's check out "157 Riverside Ave", "Golden Country" and "Ridin' the storm out".

    They have so many hits that aren't heard a lot anymore like Tough Guys, 157 Riverside Avenue , Gary's Flying Turkey Trot, etc. They were huge in the 70's and 80's until they fired Gary Richrath over his sobriety issues. I hated Kevin Cronin for years before realizing he had no choice.
    Gary was replaced by Dave Amato who is an amazing guitar player. But no one could replace Gary. I'm a guitarist and can play this solo, but I'm still in awe of his creation of that solo....it was genius. Absolute one of a kind. He was equally comfortable soloing in the major or minor penta-tonics--which is rare. RIP Gary.

    The first album I ever bought was "You Get Whar You Play For" REO Speedwagon Live. The double album came out in 1977...I was 16!! Growing up in Caribou, Maine! Far, far away in the most Northeastern City in the United States of America! Caribou, Maine! I was as far away from a live performance of REO Speedwagon than any teenager growing up in the U.S.A. back in 1977. What a glorious time in America to be alive, growing up surrounded by so many legendary rock bands, breathing the free air of America and smoking a little green! One thing about living in Aroostook County, around a community of potato farmers, and farms and farmers son's and daughters, these folks all knew how to grow plants!
