Gary Richrath was one of the most underrated guitar players ever.
Absolutely. He was amazing.
Flying Turkey Trot! Will always remember, almost front row, Market Square Arena ❤
Some perspective: I was a teenager when this was playing. I would never have been able to go back 50 years to find music I could totally feel and enjoy, like you are able to do now, going back 50 years and finding gold like this. We truly lived in a great era of music innovation.
I totally agree. ❤
Amen brother!😁🇨🇦
Exactly. We had no interest in listening to a lot of 40's or 50's music in the 80's. It's amazing that music from the 70s and 80s is still 🔥.
The 80's were a BLAST (at least the parts I remember, LOL)!
@@PhoenixRisen63 😂 totally agree! Grunge brought the mood into a lot of darkness and it's been a struggle to get back from that. We lived through the golden era ❤️
We didn’t realize how lucky we were! We thought it was normal to have this great music.
I'm 68 and still love REO Speedwagon!!
To be a teenager in the 70’s, oh we were spoiled with ALL of the great bands.
Damn straight! The best of times!
"so if you're tired of the same old story... turn some pages..." What a simple but powerful lyric...
By far REO's masterpiece. This song even makes most other bands big songs sound ridiculous. A true Rock & Roll masterpiece PERIOD!!!!!
✌Peace✌
And yet their never listed as one of the greatest bands ever. Just don't get it
@@Eugenesnufflebean Same Bro
It's my fav song by REO. THIS WAS A GREAT REACTION for the simple fact that I've never seen Pac-man dance in his chair before. He usually just sits with a blank, "the lights are on but nobodys home" look on his face. JK Ryan.😂❤😂❤
Mr Gary Richrath on guitar is so good and has one of my favorite guitar tones. Just a shredder
My favorite from REO. A total banger!
RIP…Gary…miss you brother…
I saw them in concert, favorite concert, ever🎶❤️🎶😁
Kevin's vocals are great. This is a textbook perfect rock and roll song.
I love to see each of you bop your heads in different ways & directions but you’re all jammin’ to the same great song!!!!
Coolest thing about this song is it's peak billboard position of 58 on the hot 100, yet it is their modern encore. When you get a chance, find a live version. It is AMAZING in person.
High energy Banger! Gary is scorching that guitar and Neal has his own carnival going on the organ!
This is also my favorite REO song. Growing up in Chicago, REO wasn't exactly a home town band (they were from Champagne) but we claimed them as an Illinois band. I was fortunate enough to see them when I was a high school senior, just after this album came out - we were sitting in a side balcony and watched over Neal's shoulder while he played that B3! Woot!
Me too!! Southwest side!!
Also back then, there was a very good chance if you saw these guys live, you would see them with a couple of other bands on the tour as well! Bands like Sammy Hagar and CHEAP TRICK! The old concert days were phenomenal. They really were.
Another great song to listen to by REO is, "Back On the Road Again".
“Top Shelf” is for the very best whiskeys!
Reo one of my favs..i saw them twice in concert🎉
The background “keep on Rolln” sounds like a church choir!
It's probably my favorite high energy rock song of all time. Never tire of this song. The organ and guitar solos are just insane.
Something we only get with 70's rock would be Hammond organs, tambourines and back-up singers. It'd be awesome if a band (a good band....not like today's offerings) would emerge using the "tools of their forebearers".
Ever hear of Blackberry Smoke? You need to be listening to Blackberry Smoke.
Check out Church of the Cosmic Skull.....they be good and got da Hammond!!!
Ghost has many songs with a retro vibe.
gary richrath shreds this song to pieces!
"Riding The Storm Out" and "Golden Country" are their best. If you want to hear one of the best guitar solos by Gary, watch "Golden Country" live on 1976 Tour.
High in Fidelity
Not only is Kevin playing the piano here, he actually taught himself to play the acoustic piano in order to write the song. (He had been the rhythm guitarist before this.)
I would love for you to dive into the double-live album "You Get What You Play For", because as fine as REO is on the studio versions, the reason the label stayed with them through all the changing vocalists and albums that didn't sell was because they were a *KILLER* live band. You think Gary Richrath plays an amazing guitar? Wait until you hear him live. And live shows make you appreciate what a great drummer Alan Gratzer is, because he never lets the energy flag. (Alan retired in 1987. His replacement, Brian Hitt, is pretty good, but he tends to get languid. Gratzer never does.)
Plus since the live album came before this, the only song on it that you have heard is "Ridin' the Storm Out".
Start at the beginning with "Like You Do" and just keep going all the way through to "Golden Country" (my favorite) at the end. UNSTOPPABLE.
I do believe this is the best Rick n roll song ever performed. It it vastly underrated.,insane vocals, insane musicality. Just freaking insane. Your reaction was fitting. You get it.
Only 3 freaking chords in a C mixolydian scale through the whole song and it is magic!
Old enough to have seen the band live! Twice! Badass live players! Those dudes could Rock ASS! That’s right! ASS ROCK!!
I just noticed you’re wearing a Ron Jon shirt too! Olden style. 😁👍
When it comes to guitar heroes, nobody ever mentions Gary Richrath, but he had a sound and style all his own - very underrated!
It's impossible not to feel great and get energized by this song. Spring has sprung! Play it again.
Killer Vocals,Killer Organs,Killer Guitars. One of the best songs ever made PERIOD.
We were so lucky to have the music from 1976 - 1979 that we did. Great soundtrack of our high school years.
That whole album is 🔥🔥Gary Richrath’s guitar is top notch.
RIP Gary Richrath. I wish he had a bigger legacy as one of the lead guitar maestros in rock history. He dominates this song.
My favorite REO tune because of the keyboard and guitar solos. kevin's voice great as always but love his keyboard and Gary's guitar. Makes me play air keyboard then air guitar everytime(while at home or in car).
This is definitely the best song that REO Speedwagon ever did. "Golden Country" is amazing, too.
Golden Country, what a great song!
It’s good see young guys with color in their hair appreciating classic American rock! I remember when this album was fresh. Thanks guys.
Mas Mas Mas Mas and More , , More
The anthem of our lifetime. Thankful I got to see them do this live during the album tour. Gary Richrath on lead guitar was a force.
Riding the storm out, 157 riverside Avenue as well as this were all favorites!
Still doing concerts, sound pretty darn good even today.
ALL TIME CLASSIC
Two guitar solos and a rippin' organ solo
Nothing better than being a teenager in the late 70s/early 80s and driving around listening to this music on the radio.
Why is REO often overlooked? Straight up rock and roll genius. RIP Gary "The Shredder" Richrath. And going to church with Neal D!
I worked in the grain pit at the Chicago Board of Trade in 1985 and there was a nice guy on the phone for EF Hutton who was a first cousin of Kevin Cronin.
Anything from the 70’s was done by professionals who were true musicians. Record each track, and edit it together manually. No click track or auto tune. Real music.
One of the greatest keyboard/guitar solos of all time there IMO. Hail!
Ladies and Gents Gary Richrath lead guitar!! Gary Richrath. RIP Gary.
I saw the Speedwagon
In the 70’s
They each had a wall of Marshall’s
Behind them
The movement of all that air out into space
You have to aspirate the material
To get the ride🙃
Yes! They were amazing live back then.
Few years ago they open their concert with this song 🎉🎉
Gary Ritchrath was The Man. Neal Doughty on keyboards....my God!
I grew up with REO and I always thought that this song was one of those ….. take me to church, kind of songs. I would play air guitar and air organ along with this song on my steering wheel while I was cruising NE San Antonio. Hell yes!!!!!!
This is when rock and roll was great. Today’s music can’t even come close to this!!!
This is definitely a gold shelf song.
One of my favorite songs. Thanks!!
Next R.E.O. should be Golden Country. Preferably off the Live album, You Get What You Play For
Absolutely agree! Golden Country live is definitely worth a reaction
I'm a 51yr old woman..so have been an REO listener since the 7😎❤🔴0's
Same! Rock on Rachaddle!🌻🌻🌻
I like to imagine them listening to this in the studio as they were recording and everyone was just grooving and celebrating because they knew it was gonna be a huge hit.
Kevin wrote this song on a paper bag driving across country from chicago to LA. Not many songs contain a great organ solo and guitar solo in the same song. Also check out the last song on this album called Say You Love Me Or Say Goodnight. Great sax solo.
Actually there are many songs with longer and better sax. Not much hear.
@@kirkhall2099 true. Little Queenie also had a cool sax solo
When this album came out, what a great addition to rock and roll.
Love this song! Love your reactions, including starting it over! 👍
The best REO song, hands down.
1975. My first rock concert. REO Speedwagon opens for Aerosmith. Seen a lotta shows since then , but it was a real fine way to start.
Almost bring tears to my eyes hearing this absolutely bad ass song! So f’ing brilliant!!
The live version from Live Aid is a MUST see. Some of The Beach Boys are singing back up.
Now you MUST react to the last song on the album..."Say You Love Me Or Say Goodnight!" It's a Rock 'n' Roll freight train running off of the tracks!!! I KNOW you'll love it! And one of their lesser known albums came right after the "...Tuna Fish" album..."Nine Lives"... it wasn't nearly a successful, but has some gems... and was recorded with a "live in the studio" sound. Try "Heavy On Your Love" and "Back On the Road Again", which actually features bassist Bruce Hall on vocals... and it rocks!
This was my favorite bands for MANY years....seeing them in concert back in the day was INCREDIBLE!!!
The most exciting performance of the 20th century.
Great song! ❤
I Saw REO with 38 Special opening for them in 1978 after this album came out, (when I was a Junior in High School) at the Bradley Memorial Field House in Peoria IL. the bands home stomping grounds. I also new a phenomenal guitar player in the area who worked out a lot of Gary Richrath's guitar solo, that Gary used in Flying Turkey Trot. The band came together at the University of Illinois in Champaign / Urbana IL. Good stuff, but there were a lot of amazing bands getting a lot of radio time back then. We (Central Illinois young folk, at the time ha ha) were all just proud that one of our local jam bands made it into radio air time across the country.
Such a killer jam, and the bass is riding the same note, most of the way!! ❤️
Great speeding ticket song!
REO Speedwagon - Don't Let Him Go! - Take it on the Run
One of the all time greatest songs no doubt! Great karaoke song too😄
This is from what might be the best album name ever.
“You can tune a piano, but you can’t tuna fish”
Love it.
I'm 61 years old. I think I was 12 when I bought this record Not sure. I know every song on it word for word. I also had Nine Lives, Hi Infidelity and Good Trouble. They might be my favorite band of all.
I saw REO twice back in the 70’s. In fact I saw them on the tour for this album. They were fantastic in concert! I’m 67 years old and got to experience a huge amount of great music! Great job boys!
They were phenomenal in concert....... ❤❤❤❤
"Keep On Loving You" and "I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore" should be next in line for the REO rabbit trail.
Kevin Cronin: Adding syllables to words since 1967.
Do one of their best: "Golden Country"
REO SPEEDWAGON , APRIL WINE , FOREIGNR , LOVERBOY STYX...ETC ETC THE 80'S
April Wine❤
Yay! In my top 10 favorite classic rock songs of all time! So good. Always makes me dance. Always makes me happy. ❤
you guys need to check out Back on the Road Again. this is sung by their Bassist Bruce Hall
As a teenager in the 70e this is one if the gold standard songs that encapsulates the energy and joy of being young then. If i were to montage images and feelings and experiences of my life (and my friends) in that era THIS is THE song i would let play the entire time. Thanks for the reaction! As a 63 year old grandpa now, this rockets me back and i can relive it all over again ...perfectly.
As another 63 yo, I totally agree!
Rest in peace Gary Ricrath
Golden Country is REO's masterpiece
Wife Speaking..., I really enjoy watching you guys enjoying the music of my very young youth..Seen these Guys in Charlotte, NC...With Styx and Eddie Money...Pure Fire for Sure!!!!..Great Reaction!!
Now with that line up that had to be a awesome show!
Imagine 1972 at the Aragon ballroom in Chicago, Friday 3 bux to get in and you see REO, Styx and Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes all local bands earning their chops, great tome to be a teenager!
So Gary Richrath the guitarist never really got the recognition he deserved, very underrated! He also didn't really care for the the pop song direction they were starting to go in. So he got the dirtiest nasty sound on his guitar/amp and it worked like a champ! .Gary was a real Rock Star!
REO "Golden Country " guy's
There is a REO Speedwagon Blvd in their hometown Urbana, IL. Where U of I is. Also there was a band called REO Speeddealer 😂
I discovered REO Speedwagon when I was 15 in 1980. I remember listening to this tracked with my headphones on as I sat in the dark. They were so underrated when compared to other bands at the time like Van Halen, ACDC, Led Zeplin, Foreigner ELO etc.
I was 6 when this came out. I miss those days. 1978 was phenomenal for music.
I remember seeing REO for free at the armory in Racine, WI
No doubt their best song, Soaring majestic with soul launching acceleration, Awesomely visual lyrics, Cosmically confident vocals.
I grew up in the BEST time music wise 😊
For me REO was one of those bands that you had to see live to really appreciate.
REO's best song.
I just saw them at the Resch Center in Green Bay in October. Just as good as ever.
