REO stands for Ransom Eli Olds, founder of the Oldsmobile. The band was named after the REO Speed Wagon, an early truck from the REO Motor Car Company. As others stated, credit must be given to the great Gary Richrath.
The really main guy that did pass on ,Gary Richrath, was a phenomenal guitarist..Founding member , must be mentioned. Check out performance of "Ridin the Storm Out" on Midnite Special.
In one poll, Gary is rated as the 2nd-most underrated guitarist of all time. (Mark Knopfler is #1.) Absolutely brilliant. Whereas Dave Amato is no more than adequate. I should also point out that the drummer you admire is co-founder Allen Gratzer; Bryan Hitt didn't join until 1987. The current lineup (Cronin/Doughty/Hall/Hitt/Amato) has been together since '89 and gets points for durability ("After 31 years in the group, Dave is still the new guy", as Kevin said last year), but the key lineup is from the 1970s, Cronin/Richrath/Doughty/Gratzer and first Gregg Philbin and then Hall on bass.
@@Jessica_Roth I seen Reo 30 times.over 40 plus years and Dave Amato is a hell of a guitar play.no on can fill richraths shoes but to say D.A.is Adequate??? when is the last reo show you've been to if ever!!?
They are SO GOOD in concert! I’ve seen them numerous times and Kevin has a way with the crowd! Great storyteller on and off stage! They can make you cry in one song and rip your face off the next!
An REO Speedwagon was a heavy duty truck in the early 20th century that was also fast, relatively speaking for its time, often used as a fire truck. The band formed in 1967 in Champaign, IL. They have a lot of great tunes. They started off as hard rock and around the early 80's became more of a ballad/arena rock type of sounding band.
I love this band and totally love this song!! And the beauty is that for a group of really old guys, they totally replicate the sound and energy live! ☮️💕💕
When I was a teenager, REO Speedwagon put out an amazing album called "Hi Infidelity". A GREAT album. Songs like "Don't Let Him Go", "Keep On Loving You" and "Take it on the Run" were the big hits. Give them a listen. Same lead singer as this. Great memories for me. Great review, Boys. LOVE your channel. :)
Ransom E. Olds (REO) could be considered the father of automotive claiming to have built the first automobile with a steam engine in 1894, then a gas powered one in 1896, this would credit Lansing, not Detroit, as the birth place of automotive. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REO_Speed_Wagon
If any of you guys are old enough to remember the Oldsmobile brand of car, REO was the initials of the founder of the Oldsmobile company (Ransom E. Olds). REO was a light truck company founded by the same dude, and the REO Speedwagon was a model of a light truck by the REO company from the early 20th century. I love old-school REO from the first Kevin Cronin album (REO TWO) from 1972 through this album. Great stuffl. Not as big a fan of their later stuff from the 1980s that was more pop. However from their huge 1980 album "High Infidelity" that sort of broke them through into the mainstream, I do love the last song that never got any airplay "Wish You Were There." Some other old school REO: Roll With the Changes (from this same album) Golden Country (a scathing political song, rare from REO) Being Kind Can Hurt Someone Sometimes.
Gary Richrath was the lead guitarist for all their hit years. He wrote Take It On The Run, Ridin' The Storm Out, Golden Country, and so many more. Frankly, there's no REO without Gary. The current guitarist is filling in his shoes, and the whole band have benefited from Gary, and the resurgence of Classic Rock in tv shows and movies. Richrath was the Rocking powerhouse of the band. RIP.
Champaign, Illinois is where I grew up, so thanks to the shout out to my home town! One of my friends went to high school with Bruce Hall, who was actually from Champaign.😊 Greetings from Seattle these days. 🙂
Their music is the sound track of my life. Incredible band. if you want fire check out Roll With The Changes from the same album. Keyboard and guitar fire.
One of those songs that make other drivers on the road laugh at me 😂 if it comes on - I'm singing at the top of my lungs! 🔥 Great sing- along and everyone can relate.
I was stationed in Korea the first time hearing this song. It was the anthem for all of us soldiers rotating back to the States on that big beautiful bird taking us home. That was 42 years ago and it feels like yesterday.
I'm sure you know by now and for the future that there can be no real discussion of REO Speedwagon without the late great guitarist Gary Richrath, whom - when he was in his prime - there were very few American guitarists who could touch him. That guy was an absolute madman on lead and rhythm guitar. I would even say he is probably the greatest Midwestern guitarist of all-time.
WAAAAIDAMINUTE, I’m back! You just mentioned “Underrated”. Only to younger generations could this band be underrated. They were ALL OVER the radio, so much, their own songs were fighting with other to get played! PACKED TO THE CEILING concerts where ever they played! Ok, I’m out (again) 🤘😎🤘
Thank god I saw them twice, one with Gary, one last year without. Always the best music. Full sound without spaces. Like they said every song is a journey
Ransom Eli Olds the founder of the REO motor company. Made a high power truck in 1911 that was the first high powered vehicle that could carry heavy loads called the Speedwagon. It was used a fire truck and other heavy duty jobs. The founder of the band Neal Doughty. (keyboardist) was taking a history of engineering class at the University of Illinois and was looking for a name for his newly formed band and the first day of class the instructor wrote REO SPEEDWAGON on the balckboard and Neal decided it was the perfect name for his band. The used Ramson Eli Olds intials and formed R.E.O Speedwagon. in 1968 the band still tours every year (except this year of course)
It's really great to see you kids getting into and analysing the song and the lyrics.. You guys can feel it and back then we could too. Growing up in the 70s was a magical time and the music exemplified and magnified that magic.
One of the greatest bands and they have stood the test of time. If young guys like urselves are likeing this music ur special I lived each of their hits still living them today
Kevin Cronin and crew is a class act! I've seen them live 4 times! Never disappoints. Cronin is quite the story teller! One tip...If u get a chance to see them live and its at a outdoor venue. Their final song is always "Riding the storm out"Which is a great song! you will need to leave before the song is over....because as the song starts....you're gonna see lightning off in the distance. By the end its a downpour! No joke....it only had to happen to me and my friends ONCE! 2nd time....we ain't falling for this 💩. True story! Every time in Noblesville In.

The REO Speed Wagon (alternatively Reo Speedwagon) was a light motor truck manufactured by REO Motor Car Company. It is an ancestor of the pickup truck.
Such a great song... I've seen REO live a number of times and one show Kevin did an acoustic set by himself while the rest of the band took a break. He sat on a stool and played/sang this solo, just amazing. Gary Richrath was such an underrated guitar player.
It's the original lead guitarist on this one. He and Kevin wrote most of the songs. Much better that new guitarist but really good. Original likes to hold those notes like Gilmore does
REO Speedwagon touring "You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish" was my first concert. I had never heard of them prior to that concert. They spoiled me for any other concert I've been to after them. Kevin is the best front man I've ever seen. He had the audience in his hand with his high energy and the way he talked to the audience. The show was general admission so my friends and I made our way to the front of the stage. As high as I was I still remembered several of the songs, especially "Riding The Storm Out" and "157 Riverside Ave." Kevin fucked up his intro dialog on "157" by saying "Smoked some wine and drank a joint" (paraphrasing) He stopped bent over laughing and admitted to his fuck up as he laughed with the audience. BEST PARTY EVER!!!
REO was excellent and this was one of several "Ultimate Breakup Songs," and another one would be Would I Lie To You by the Eurythmics. "Jolly" breakup song??? LMAO!!!!!!!!
This and "Roll With The Changes" were their first two huge hits that put them on the map -- "Ridin' The Storm Out" too was a hit. Then they exploded with their classic 1981 album Hi Infidelity.

REO was the first concert I ever went to. I loved the Live Album, especially "157 Riverside Avenue". Their piano player was also top notch, especially live!
And I understand their greatest hit (included in their top selling album) is about the singer's cheating wife. Alan Gratzer on drums. Love his drumming, his fills enrich the songs.

Trust me guys, They didn't need a TV series to make a "Come Back", They never went away.
Nothing gets you over heartbreak like writing a song about it, and making a literal shit ton of money over it.
Roll with the Changes is a great REO song.
