Every time I hear these guys I’m transported back to High School. I love them, but it’s a bittersweet feeling of lost youth and innocence.
Oh, I long for those "innocent".....NAIVE times! The world has become a "not so great place"...at least for me.
Oh the memories
Roll with the changes came out in 1978 ,,,,,, I was 17 ....
I can so relate
This is how I feel about early 2000s music, especially pop punk and emo. I love it but it can almost be painfully nostalgic, making me long for being a teenager again.
“Time for me to fly” and “Take it on the Run” are two that I think both of you will enjoy 🔥🔥🔥
And Riding the Storm Out.
"Don't let him go"
Golden Country.
@@markkappe1995 MOST Definitely!!!
That guitar was the rip roaring Gary Richrath and he was indeed adventurous. My wife and I saw REO in 1980 on our 3rd date at the Lakeland Civic Center. We saw them again in 2010 for our 30th anniversary. They were and still an amazing band.
RIP, Gary
I saw them in 81 and again in the 90s (they were with Foreigner & Peter Frampton). Love them, and this is one of my fav songs from them.
So glad yall finally did this song !!!! Speedwagon is such a underrated band !!!!
They weren’t… then they went the way of the Chicago style whiny love ballads… What is it with those Illinois bands selling out 🤨😉🤣😂🤣
Next I would like to hear them do, golden country, like you do, Riding the Storm Out and back on the road again, 70s rockers.
@@paulstewart6203 great songs!
@@vrvaughn I remember when they went that way....sold millions of albums, but man they went full top 40 ballad hits. There were some headlines back then that quoted Kevin Cronin to another band (Journey??) that he was going to win the ballad war. I couldn't get into that stuff back then, but the songs are good.
Huh? Underrated by whom?? Your neighbors' uncles' gardener in Sri Lanka?
Gary Richwrath was a monster on the guitar
In the 80's REO became more known for their ballads but they had some rockers. Check out Riding The Storm Out. It is a rocker!
Their 1st big hit RLEASED IN 1973
The live version please.
Yes,the live version is with Kevin Cronin rather then the original studio album song sung by somebody else. Live version is far superior.
Live 157 Riverside Ave is their best rocker!
I love Lex's reaction..lol...rock on girl...
Gary Richrath, one of the most underrated guitar players ever!
Yes! Absolutely 💯 R.I.P. Mr.Richrath 🙏✌️
Gary Richrath was a great guitarist, they called him sloppy on his scales and runs, but I considered it to be his style. Thanks
Never got appreciated!
@@garytrew2766 if Gary Richrath was "sloppy" then what was Jimmy Page? Both great guitarists, but I think they played loose, not sloppy.
Neal Doughty: Underrated keyboardist
She's the kind I loved having in the room when I used to DJ. Into the music and.drew people to the dance floor! He of course is the boyfriend/husband sitting on the side just taking it in. 🤣
Such an awesome high energy song from beginning to end, it almost doesn't feel long enough. RIP Gary Richrath, an awesome guitarist.
RIP 😥
Lex is right on, this is a concert ender. Saw REO about six months ago and this was their last song in their encore. Saw REO in the 70's, the 90's and again recently, and they never disappoint.
Ridin the Storm Out, Live...Golden Country and 157 Riverside Avenue are REO songs that must be heard to fully understand how great this Band was. Their guitarist, Gary Ritchrath is crazy under rated!
I hope they see this, I would love for them to react to Golden Country live.
One of my favorite songs of all time. Gary was such great guitar player criminally underrated. These guys were my first live concert Toronto 1981.
The lead guitarist Gary Richrath was at my 8th grade graduation. I went to school with his son! Saw them at a concert in Illinois in the mid 80s while going to grade school with his son Eric.
Forgot how great this song is, it rocks! Love the way the singer pronounces the lyrics.
A hugely important transitional song -- 70s meets the 80s. Epic song.
One of my ALL time R&R favorite songs.
One of the best rock songs ever written. This is my favorite REO song.
Easily my favorite song by REO. This song always pumps me up.
Wasn't really a fan until I saw them live in San Diego. They performed one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I do like their live version of Riding the Storm Out (very much better than their studio version). Worth a listen/reaction.
The best line in the song, " if you're tired of the same old story turn some pages". That song help me get over a bad relationship years ago. Great reaction guys as always
It's great to see young people nowadays enjoying the great music of my younger years. Thanks for posting this.
RIP Gary Richrath. 🙏
When I listen to this song.....I get a ticket. My favorite " Road Trip " song, but it can be dangerous. My gas pedal foot seems to get heavier and there's a lot of steering wheel drum slappin' goin' on...and before you know it....Damn!
the keyboardist and founding member Neal Doughty just turned 76 today and still rocking that organ on tour this year with Styx and Loverboy. Kevin Cronin the lead singer wrote this song in 1976 when he rejoined the band after a short hiatus. He wrote the lyrics while driving from Chicago to L.A. on a paper sack. It is on the 1978 album You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish. Also from the same album check out Time For Me To Fly. The greatest breakup song of all time.
Happy (belated) birthday to Neal! Pretty much the luckiest guy in music history: on his first day at the University of Illinois, he met Allen Gratzer, and thus began a band now in its *56th* year. Awesome.
And yes, "Time for Me to Fly" is about Kevin dumping his first girlfriend (the girl from "Tough Guys") because he thought the relationship had gotten toxic. He wrote that one in 1973, when the band was on the trip to Denver that led to their getting stuck in the mountains (and inspiring Gary Richrath to write "Ridin' the Storm Out"). After that, Kevin became infatuated with the woman who would become his first wife (Denise), but by 1976 he was tired of their only being friends. So this is his "let's date, already!" song.
(The marriage didn't work, but that's for later songs.)
He's right up there with Jon Lord and other keyboardists but gets little recognition
REO took us all to church on this one. Great reaction both of you. Lex is feeling this one to the soul.
One of their absolute best songs. A masterpiece. Great guitar organ interplay. With a bit of southern influences. This song never gets old. Another classic rock song from the early 80s is Last Chance by Shooting Star. Very much like Kansas. One of the best classic Rock songs of the early 80s. Check it out. You won,t be disappointed.
Check out "Time For Me To Fly", "Only The Strong Survive" and "Live Every Moment" by REO.
Gary definitely one of the most underrated guitarists 🙏
my favorite REO song ever
Love this song.
such an underrated band and G.Richrath very underrated guitar player
They were my 1st concert in Evansville Indiana '79
love the solo's and the hand off from keyboard to guitar
"Back on the Road Again" is an all time jam.... one of the best.
Great song; 2 Gary Richrath guitar solos & Neal Doughty's organ solo. But, "Ridin' the Storm Out" (live) is even a bigger banger than this! 💯🔥🔥
Love riding the storm out!!
Oh my, I love riding the storm out, amazing song
This is one of those songs that can just keep on going and going and going. Rolling the keyboards, then the guitar in and the classic chords, it is just a real good feel good song.
This song is a dynamo. A great combination of hard guitar and joy.
Early 80's REO was on fire, they have epic live albums.
Every 6mo REO would come to Town. And Every 6mo I would go see them ! always a Great show . RIP Gary...
Gary Richrath, one of the most underrated guitarist's ever in my opinion.
One of my favorite songs of all time. One of the greatest high energy songs of all time.
Magicians Of Deep Rooted Soul! Lyrical Masters With Mind Numbing Heavy Riffs! The Speedwagon of The Mighty 70's and The Very Early 80's Had Incredible Zeal For Sure!
1 of the Most Underrated Guitarists Ever !!!!
REO Speedwagon was an awesome band in the seventies and eighties. I consider them on top of the heap, saw them 3times and the Gary Richrath Band (the guitarist)once. I feel as though the keyboard player (forget his name) is under rated you can hear on this song that he really makes it. Kevin Cronin on vocals is great, they had another vocalist I thought was great but, Cronin took his place. Thanks friends
Neal Doughty is the keyboardist and is an original member of the band who formed the group in fall of '67 with drummer Alan Gratzer. Apparently he continues to perform and has played on every album. Great player and shines on this song.
@@jackndew2, when my wife and I saw them two weeks ago in Irvine, California, Kevin Cronin introduced Neal Doughty as having played on every REO album and in every REO performance; that is truly amazing!
Well, they were awesome in the 70s. After that it was all boring pop trash. And playing that crap didn't make Gary very happy.
This song is absolutely epic. Such a hopeful love song wrapped up in a seriously rockin' package- the way it builds - and that keyboard solo just makes my heart fly every time.
Used to se REO live in the Midwest in early 1970’s they were outstanding live!!!
The old day's Ha ha
REO started in Central Illinois and they credit St. Louis for much of their success. They were the headliner for Super Jam 77 at Busch Stadium II. It was my first concert (I saw things at 13 I had never seen before), and the first of many REO shows over the many years since. They still have "it."
My wife and I have seen REO play many times in southern Minnesota area in the early 70's. I've seen them outdoors and inside, the last time in Portland OR. several years ago, and I was fortunate enough to catch the lead singer, Kevin's guitar pic in midflight. I have it to this day. They are truly great, and I loved Gary, may he rest in peace.
And trust me they sounded great live too. This is my all time favorite REO song and as a lifelong guitarist Richrath's guitar tone and phrasing still gives me goosebumps all these years later. The keyboards, both piano and organ are phenomenal and the studio production values are off the charts for its day. Thank you for reacting to this song. I have been waiting a long time for someone to do it. Oh, and Lex is right. This songs dynamics feed right into the theme of rolling with the changes. Good catch Lex!
The late great Gary Richrath on guitar. Damn that dude could play. As the eighties came along, they got into more sappy pop songs and it broke his heart.
Awesome live band, musicianship and work ethic they had it all.
One of the greatest keyboard/guitar solos of all time IMO. A legendary track!
You SHOULD listen to it live. Their official video is from their 1981 tour...FABULOUS!!!! This is not the show ender. They would close out with Riding the Storm Out. That would be the late Gary Richrath on lead guitar. So fabulous!!!
“It seemed to turn you up a notch.” Lol that literally made me laugh out loud for some reason. 😂
Love watching you two rocking out to a great song. Wish it happened more.
Yes He gets too caught up in trying to figure out song lyrics and their meanings lol All good!
Going to see them live again for the 3rd time next month.
REO Speedwagon was one of the first concerts I went to. Their energy blew me away. Rick Neilson from Cheap Trick came out and did a guitar battle with Gary Richarth (the guitarist on this song). If I close my eyes, I can still feel the energy from that show.
Every time I hear that unmistakable guitar of Gary Richrath. Just fantastic!
This song and "Ridin' The Storm Out" are my favorites of theirs. Also they have an album with one of my all time favorite titles, You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish.
They’re still touring! They were just here a couple weeks ago. The lineup was
Styx/REO/Loverboy. It just shows the staying power of some of these 80’s giants.
Try “Keep Pushin’” or “Time For Me To Fly.” They have a ton of great songs.
TRY 70s REO ,, Not 80s band ,,,, Time for me to fly Came out in 1978
I wish I had seen Styx in their prime. An opportunity missed.
Speedwagon use to be my favorite band back in the day. Seen them live at least 5x live. Gary Richrath was on my top 5 list for Best Guitar Players back in the 70s.
One of THE BEST live shows I've ever seen. I'm 55, I've seen ALOT of live shows lol. If we could only go back in time...
Loving seeing youngins discover the 80's music... ohhhh the Memories!!!
My favorite song by them! A lot of memories here!
Yes, finally! Another reactor gets past the sappy 1980s stuff and reaches the TRUE Speedwagon, an extremely energetic live band that is only partly captured on LP. Check out some of their concerts on YT, or the live "You Get What You Play For" album. There's a reason the record company stuck with them, even after three changes in lead singer (Kevin Cronin, heard here, was brought in for the 2nd album, got fired during the recording of the 3rd, and had to be negotiated back in, at the label's insistence, for the 6th) and even though it took *eight* albums before they truly broke through.
Gary Richrath (lead guitar) was fire and Allen Gratzer (drums) keeps the pace going, full-time; the energy never flags. (But they were both out of the band by 1989, so when I'm talking about the live shows, nothing more recent than that, please. JMO.)
I usually throw out about a dozen suggestions here, but let's just keep to the top two: "Ridin' the Storm Out" (the show closer before this one, and usually still either the set closer or the last encore) and "Golden Country", which needs to be seen live to be truly appreciated. I recommend the Rockpalast (German TV) show from 1979, but it was power any time Gary got to cut loose.
Thank you very much.
Musicians like myself that like this era of music KNOW that REO is one of the best of all time. This IS a banger! With such class!
I was fortunate enough to have REO Speedwagon come to my home town, to our festival, back in 1989. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Their songs are indeed better in concert.
Wife and I are going to see REO Speedwagon in September (2023)
I’ve been listening to this song over and over for the past two weeks. I cannot wait to hear it performed live. 🥳🔥
They were fantastic live, true showmen and excellent musicians!
"Don't Let him go" is another banger by them. Loving the live-streams.
Yeah "Don't Let Him Go" is my favorite REO song. I love Gary's guitar tone in "Roll With The Changes".
One of the best Guitarist! Their live album killed it!!!!!
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Take It on the Run" and "Keep the Fire Burnin' " !!
Yep!!!
This band is incredible live. This song is so meant to be played and heard live.
love the way Gary could make his Gibson literally growl...
Saw REO at wheeling high school in 1973 I think sitting in their field house floor. Gary Richrath was a great guitar player and they rocked the place that night. They never made it big untill Kevin Cronin stepped in on vocals. Saw them last year at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphy’s Ca. They still rock!
Gary Richrath's sound is unmistakable. I put him up there with Eddie Van Halen and Neil Sheon
This song always brings me joy, and Lex's joy just multiplies that.
This channel is a gift. 👍❤
So glad you guys got around to this fantastic song!!!!
This classic has saved me from depression sadness and loneliness over a lot of years. Watching you both enjoying it makes me feel better. Peace✌
REO was my first concert; their High Infidelity tour. They were excellent.
In the 70's REO lived on the road. I saw them 5 or 6 times opening for other bands, that they should have been the headliner. They are an amazing band.
I saw them at the JULY 4th 82 T-Bowl rock in Orlando…, one month before I went into the Navy
They really nocked it out of the park, Gary Rickrath was a one of the best guitar players around. Had is own sound and style.
Good call Brad. REO is currently on tour right now and THIS is their setlist.

Time For Me To Fly and In My Dreams are my favorite Speedwagon tunes. K.C. has such a clear voice, wonderful.
An awesome band! Great musicians!
Did you know they got their name from a pick-up truck?
The REO Speed Wagon was a light truck manufactured from 1915 to 1953, by the REO Motor Car Company.
"So if you are tired of the same old story, turn some pages. " great line
You're right, this is a great song to see live. I saw them in the mid-1980s in Wausau, Wisconsin, and part of the promotion was local singers auditioning to sing the "Keep on rolling!" chorus at the end of the song. They sounded great and the show was a lot of fun.
Lex would've fit in Perfectly as a teenager in the 80's!!! Love This!!!
Brad too! Lol
Brad listens to music with his brain, Lex her soul. Entertaining combo.
REO was the best live band I've ever seen, period.
Just saw REO with Styx last weekend in Dallas lol incredible show for how up there they are getting, they can still rock though!
I would have LOVED to see that show
I saw REO Speedwagon in concert only once in 1988. My girlfriend and I had front row center seats at an outdoor amphitheater. Nothing like good music outside on a summer night! The are great live and Gary Richrath was an underrated guitarist.
I saw them 9 times in my life more than any other band. They were from a town 30 miles from mine and I saw them for the first time before they hit the big time at the Jr. College in Danville, Illinois and the crowd size might’ve been 700-800 at best. Great band to see live. Their guitar player died many years ago. RIP Gary Ritchrath. (SP) He was exceptional!
So many fine options to consider. My favorite is their cover of Chuck Berry's Little Quennie. Hard to argue though with Golden Country or 157 Riverside Avenue.
REO Speedwagon...top 5 concerts to see live ...Rockin show yo!
This was real, genuine, honest to goodness rock and roll that you could hear everyday back in the 1970s. We had it so good we didn't even know it. Great guitar playing and vocals were pretty much the norm. Music is meant to make you feel joy! So Brad and Lex, when life is getting you down put on some great old rock and roll and let yourself get pumped back up! 🎸🎸🎸
You guys review all the music that I grew up with and you get it. the magic of those times. Music was everywhere and it was great music never to be topped. It was the times people got along the nights were magical with fun. God I wish we could have it all back again!
This song and "Ridin' the Storm Out" are both great, either studio or live version. One of the many Illinois bands that were great but underrated.
REO Speedwagon is a great classic band.
This takes me way back to my teen years. Such great music and memories. 💓💓
Gary Richrath was Mr. REO Speedwagon. he was the lead guitar player who was removed. Once he left REO was over. it was sad to us true fans. He brought the magic and power to REO Speedwagon!
REO live is awesome! Yes they did this song as an encore.
Takes me back to high school ‘78-‘82
