In the 1980’s most of the band members lived in Doraville, Ga, in the North Atlanta suburbs, home of the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Don Barnes & Jeff Carlisi were frequent guests on 96Rock which was a powerhouse rock station back then. They were a perfect blend of gritty southern rock and northern polish thanks to their partnership with Jim Peterik of Survivor.

Southern Rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Outlaws, Molly Hatchett, 38 Special, Blackfoot, Etc) an Interesting note:
The brothers Ronnie Johnny and Donnie Van Zandt all related of course, are all famous. Ronnie being the original singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd Johnny later replacing his bother (after Ronnies death) and Donnie one of the singer guitar players in 38 Special.
Some other cool 38 Special tunes.

A near 4 hour drive with the top down, blasting 38 Special all the way. They were my wife's favorite band. Seats were just right of center, mid way back. A bar to the right on the floor. A great concert for me and my favorite memory of it was my wife went crazy and was so jazzed dancing in the isle to their music. You can't help but enjoying it more when someone you love is loving it more than you. My only Negative was they never played...." Fade to Blue".

They were practicing in a garage and the door had a padlock on it. A cop blew the lock off with a 38 and that's how they came up with their name. Sad thing is just as 38 Special was ready to tour, Lynard Skynard's plane crashed and they cancelled the tour because Donnie was grief stricten from the loss of his oldest brother and biggest fan.

This band has 2 personalities with Don Barnes singing the radio hits and Donnie Van Zant singing the grittier southern rock songs. Let me suggest the song Rebel To Rebel, its a song tribute to Ronnie Van Zant

One of the best rock n roll songs of all time in my opinion. Great vocals, great melodies, great guitars, great arrangement, and a killer guitar solo! It's actually straight up power pop. Closer to Cheap Trick, Tommy Tutone (of Jenny 867-5309 fame) and Rick Springfield than Skynyrd.

One thing I really enjoyed about 38 Special was when seeing them live they could reproduce their studio sound very well, but added even more to it. Donnie Van Zant, the middle Van Zant brother (his older brother Ronnie was the original lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd who died in a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi, and his younger brother Johnny has been the lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd since 1987) was with 38 Special since their formation.

It’s funny to see these “live” videos and surmise that although Donnie Van Zant was holding a guitar, it was probably not plugged into an amp…
I guess they had to give him something to do on stage when Don Barnes was singing (most of the good songs).

Fun fact: Donnie Van Zant is the brother of Ronnie Van Zant (RIP) who is the founder/singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd. He is playing the guitar with black hat and white jacket in the video.

Lex, it's funny you said that, because the guitarist with the hat happens to be Donnie VanZant, one of the brothers of Skynyrd's lead singer Ronnie VanZant .Also the guy playing solo is Jeff Carlisi, their cousin.
