Billy Joel is an admitted HUGE fan of Ray Charles. They even performed together. I'm sure he picked up some of that soulful sound by listening to Mr. Charles.
Billy Joel is a great singer songwriter & composer from the 70's-90's. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His first single was "Piano Man" released in 1973. My favorite album is the "Stranger" album. It has a lot of great songs such as "Just The Way You Are", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "Only The Good Die Young", "She's Always A Woman" etc.
Some of his best are right there, but since I live in Upstate New York, New York State of mind is easily my favorite with my added bias. Without that bias, it's still top 3 for me
I will say without a doubt Billy Joel has the biggest highs but also the lowest lows. I challenge you to listen to entire albums (other than greatest hits and The Stranger). He has a LOT of realllllly bad and mediocre songs. That being said he has some of the best songs of all times.
@@soocool78 To each his own, soocool78, but I could put on An Innocent Man, 52nd Street, Songs in the Attic, or Piano Man and play it all day long. There is nothing to any of these albums (nor The Stranger) that could possibly be called a "low" IMHO.
What a fabulous song to start your Billy Joel journey. This live version is AMAZING! He is a HUGE catalogue of music. Yes, he coined the phrase “New York State of Mind,” which has been used by so many people. Joel is insanely talented. The Billy Joel rabbit hole runs very deep - dive in and enjoy!

Billy Joel is the best! Seeing him and Elton in concert together was such a privilege. This man does not have a bad song. He released a new sing earlier this year and it is killer too.
Piano man is a true story his record company was ripping him off so he decided to stop recording till his contract ran out,so he he just played in bars.
To me NY is a place where every inch is fascinating and has its own story, and you can just disappear into it. Ive been there once and never felt so wonderfully alone yet in the middle of everything.
I was born in the 70's in New York. (The Bronx) Billy Joel was the early soundtrack of my life. This song in particular, always make me think of home. This performance gives you the entire Billy Joel experience. It's a love song to the vibe that is NY. Glad you enjoyed.

@@zippymacadoo6336 And to be clear, Billy Joel grew up on LI, so he’s a suburban kid - thus, “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” is totally LI. But like many of us who were born in the city, in his generation, grew up on LI, then moved back to NYC, our major romance is with the city. Of course, he didn’t get priced out of it like I did, but I’ll always be a New Yorker.
I was an architectural designer/draftsman in the early 90s. I worked in an old railroad building. I heard someone playing piano, beautifully. Turns out Billy Joel's office was above mine!!! Loved drafting and to Billy playing piano. Dream job. I met the bass player, Howie, from his first band "The Hassles". He was going on tour with "Ram Jam". Yeah, the "Black Betty" band. Those of you who saw him live know his last remark of the night was always; “Have a great night, and don’t take shit from anyone!” Billy “closed out” Shea Stadium as only he can. The next morning contractors began tearing it down. He IS NYC. 🤘😎
Billy Joel is an American treasure. He’s a genius composer/lyricist/storyteller/pianist/vocalist. His live performances are legendary and his catalogue is deep and well worth a deep dive. He is also amazing on harmonica 🌺✌️
If you listen to a number of his songs back to back, you notice that his voice and the piano mirror the feel of each sing. The Entertainer feels almost like a carnival, there is an innocence at the start of Goodnight, Saigon that graduals turns harsh, bitter, and jaded. He is incredibly talented.
I grew up in and around New York, from 1969. I don't live there anymore but my brother and some friends still do. It is a huge city. There are areas that aren't so great, just like in any city, but there are also fantastic areas. Overall it is a place worth visiting and experiencing. There is no other place like it. And I believe Billy Joel still performs to sold out concerts at Madison Square Garden.
Every month, MSG, sold out until I believe July 2024. These days, though, the shows are more of a singalong of huge fans who attend and watch him as they accompany him to his songs.
Grew up on Long Island. He'd show up at bars in the Hamptons and just sit and play and everyone would just start singing along. No one mobbing him. Just like he was one of the crowd. So nice and polite too! Great times! Captain Jack is a favorite!
I was fortunate to speak with Billy Joel after his concert. He is just a regular guy: he's so personable & humble. He studied classical music as a kid. He once said when he was overseas playing a concert, the audience didn't seem to really know who he was & what he did, so, he sat down at his piano & played a classical song. The audience erupted into cheers & clapping. His saxophone players have always been terrific. At his concert, we gave his sax player a Standing O after his solo. Joel jumped on his piano & started clapping along with us. He told the sax player, "That's for you; keep playing." He didn't jump off his piano for 10 minutes while the sax player continued to play. When I get homesick for NYC, I listen to this song on a loop until I feel better.
"Good Night Saigon" and "We Didn't Start the Fire" are masterpieces. Others in the comment section are offering plenty of suggestions. I noticed one that I agree with big time: you should check out Kennedy Center Honors Billy Joel. Almost 19 minutes long, but I think most of us would stick with you for it, since it features an incredible line-up of performers paying tribute.

While you in Billy Joel mood you really should his most famous song which introduced us all to him which is Piano man. Very nostalgic of the 70’s when piano bars was the place to go Out drinking and to party.
Man Is gifted and shows his true blue roots, which he developed in the multicultural universe that is New York City. Piano 🎹 Man is not faking. And the solo sax is amazing. Couldn’t wait to see the look on your face, POLO! You have a great format, and others are copying you, but your intelligence, deep feeling and appreciation are not just an intellectual exercise - and keep me coming back. Hope I can put that into $$ soon.
I have been lucky enough to see Billy at MSG, once from the front row. This is one of my favorites as I love NYC and this is Billy's love song to NYC. I wanted to see him one more time at MSG, but when they announced that his residency at MSG will end in July 2024 the ticket prices went thru the roof. A front row ticket I had just a few years ago is now about 10 times more. By the end Billy will have played 150 sold out shows in the last 10 years at MSG. It was a once/twice in a lifetime experience.
There's a reason he's STILL selling out Madison Square Garden every month (going on like 90 shows in 10 years.) He's not my favorite, but he is an undisputed icon, and incredible singer/player/songwriter. And yeah, it gets smelly here in some parts, but despite all its many problems it's the greatest city in the world. Check out Simon and Garfunkel's "A Heart in New York" live from the '81 Central Park performance!
He has so many incredible songs. Many pay tribute to New York. When I moved away from Upstate NY in my mid-20s, we'd party till the wee hours in Denver, and we would crank Billy Joel when I felt heartache, missing my home. He's an incredible musician and performer. A genuine talent. All that said, New York City is only a slice of New York State... Upstate NY is stunningly beautiful and pristine. Truly. Go there.
"Joel wrote the song after returning to the East Coast from Los Angeles, where he had spent the previous three years. The inspiration for the song came from his pride in returning home to New York. Joel was literally "takin' a Greyhound [bus] on the Hudson River Line [route]" when the idea for the song came to him, and the song was written as soon as Joel arrived home. " (From Wikipedia)
Saw Billy with Elton John (piano men efficienatos). In Ohio Stadium. Equal billing, three part, Billy, Elton, and then they played together doing each others songs. Wonderful!
I love this song so much. I'm a Texan, and I've always gotten along with New Yorkers. Both groups are very proud of where they are from, and have great music celebrating them.
Billy Joel ' Piano Man".... Excellent song!
You should absolutely visit New York. It's breathtaking, and like no where else in the world.
It’s why he’s called the piano man! A New York poet ♥️
Gotta hear Captain Jack
Billy Joel is a mood.
Billy live is amazing. He also plays guitar, sax and harmonica that I've seen. Could be more!
Blues! Love Joel!
New York is a wondrous city - and state.
Saw Billy with Elton John (piano men efficienatos). In Ohio Stadium. Equal billing, three part, Billy, Elton, and then they played together doing each others songs. Wonderful!
This musicianship was amazing! 🔥
I love this song so much. I'm a Texan, and I've always gotten along with New Yorkers. Both groups are very proud of where they are from, and have great music celebrating them.
Good Texas songs:
No Place But Texas - Willie Nelson
That's Right, You're Not From Texas - Lyle Lovett
Amarillo By Morning - George Strait
All My Exes (Live in Texas) - George Strait
Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind - George Strait
LaGrange - ZZ Top
Luckenbach Texas - Waylon Jennings
If You're Gonna Play In Texas - Alabama
Miles and Miles of Texas - Asleep At The Wheel
BILLY IS STILL PERFORMING!!!🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹
Polo, Billy's singin about old NYC, pre 9/11
Greatest city in the World!❤️🤘🏻
Billy Joel is a consummate entertainer. Seeing him perform live is an amazing experience. I have been a fan almost my entire adult life.
My favorite Billy J song of all time!!!
One of the best story tellers ! Greatest live show … he’s a treasure
With the glasses and cigarette, he was channeling his hero, Ray Charles.
I don’t think I heard this version before awesome 👏
It was amazing to see Billy Joel in concert. All talent, very little flash.
I want to take the time to congratulation Maryam. I watched some older blogs, I cannot get over the changes in her from the camera shy mother who could hardly look at the camera to the confident woman in her prime who is now one of the stars of a successful international blog. She will never be that shy woman again. She has allowed herself to be scrutinised and private parts of life to be known. Moslem your wife has gone from strength to strength and is much admired internationally. She knows her worth. It’s so wonderful. She’s a treasure.
Thank you for playing. Billy Joel Maybe you could play piano man. Thank you so much love your show and you.❤😂❤❤
