My cousin was in the Navy while his girlfriend at the time was in a different branch I think. I know my cousin would never cheat. He's a lot better than that but their relationship definitely did fall apart because of the stress and distance mostly on her end. It's hard, people can make it work but if someone isn't willing to put in the work, you gotta call it.

The second story hits kinda close to home. One summer I got a job doing respite and my husband’s truck was in the shop so he had my car. A guy will get his guy best friends gifts like jewelry, watches, etc. and the connotations behind certain pieces of jewelry or watches wouldn’t make people bat an eye. But as soon as you get a _heart_ necklace, something small, subtle, more intimate than it becomes bad looking.

I definitely think the price to income ratio is the big deciding factor in something like story 1. it is possible to have a relationship like that. my brother has been friends with this girl named (family friend, her sister was a close friend of mine growing up) and they had been friends since before they were in grade school. shes getting married next august to a guy she dated for like 7+ years and my brother has been in an 8 year long relationship (i think brother is going to be one of her brides maids...or brides men? idk the proper term) She is very charismatic and funny girl and is like family. Society seems to think its ok to call us crazy and insecure these days. I grew up with a guy best friend since we were babies, but back off at every relationship for either of us. When I was in the hospital after I had complications with the birth of my kid. He was one of the first to come and see me. I help his parents because I live next door to them now that I'm living by my mom. When he's in the neighbourhood we have a beer but that's it and I talk about my kid and he talks about his girlfriend's. It's good to catch up but I do not have any romantic feelings at all. The second story hits kinda close to home. One summer I got a job doing respite and my husband’s truck was in the shop so he had my car. Devils advocate for similar circumstances (Tiffany necklace): OP could actually be horrible company to be around, she could be rude or nasty, or take over all conversations, or just be a total buzz kill, she could be controlling etc, so her husbands friend may want to actually have a conversation with him one on one because OP just ruins the mood (I know that is not the full situation in this instance)
Speaking from personal experience, I liked my friends GF at first but, she has come to be controlling, emotionally manipulative and needs to be around him 24-7. When we do go out she always tags along and get's super drunk and takes over the conversation which is always about her job she hates. I now don't get to see my friend because I can't stand being around her. We used to exchanged brilliant gifts (never anything romantic, usually goofy) for xmas and birthdays, but now it is a cheap and crappy gift from both of them. I would never send a gift to my old friend from me and my boyfriend, it's creepy and tacky. We have been friends for 22 years. His ex was not like this at all, she was so cool and carefree, and I feel really bad he cant see what type of toxic person he is in a relationship with. I have absolutely no romantic feelings for him, he is like my brother.
