Kody's Inability To Show Sympathy For His Family Is Disturbing

  • TLC's Sister Wives cast member Kody Brown, is abuzz with activity and excitement for everything from cars, motorcycles, and real estate. However, consistently the one thing he never seems truly excited about is being with or doing for his family.
There was an episode in season 6 where his daughter Truely was diagnosed with liver failure. Kody being the man that he is, didn't seem very effected by his daughter's dire situation. He was very stoic when dealing with this family emergency. Conversely, in my last video I demonstrated that Kody does in fact have the capacity to have emotions for his friend Brett.
I am not criticizing Kody's ability to have and show emotion, but I do want to talk about the importance he places on some issues and his overall prioritization when it comes to the family. Particularly anyone in the family who isn't Robyn or her kids.
    Let's have the conversation.

Her kidney failure was Kody's fault. She was dehydrated, and likely got an infection for not bathing and typical child care. He never went to check on her, he was having too much fun in his neighbors hot tub. Was she getting fluids? Doubt it. Eating? Doubt it. Cleaning properly, absolutely not. I HATE HIM FOR THAT. He completely ghosted Truely. Ignored her sisters who were telling him she was seriously ill. But when he got covid, he was whining that he was about to die. OMG. He should of been over at her house, feeding her, making sure she was hydrated, and helping her keep clean. he ignored her the entire time.

Agree. As parents, we have to insure our babies and young children are being cleaned and bathed. My grandmother, who helped raised me, had me cleanse my privates with warm water and a soft cloth (no soap, too irritating) before bed. She emphasized good bathroom habits as well. I know that might be TMI, but I was born with one kidney, as was my mother, and these basic hygene practices kept us infection free. I am 60 years old, and had surgery to correct an underdeveloped Urethra, as did my oldest daughter at age 5. THIS IS NOT HARD PEOPLE. But first you have to give a shit about your children, which Kody does not. That man infuriates and discusts me.

Or does it happen over the course of a few days? Because if it’s the latter, Kody - and only Kody - wasn’t doing his job as a father and watching after his sick child. Kody can't even pretend to care about his children - except his over-the-top feelings he has for Robyn's kids. He has limited relationships with most of the kids since day one and Truely came along when Kody was mesmerized by Robyn and got even LESS than any of the others. Those clips show in stark detail Kody's lack of affect about Truely's life or death situation. He seems to NEVER have connected with Truely as a father - or actually any of Christine's children. Kody was done with Christine after she had Truely - no more kids for her. And when he was done with her, he was done with "her" children. The really scary part is that Kody has absolutely no idea of the damage he's done or continues to do. That's some messed up thinking right there!

Other Sister Wives content creators have pointed out that they lived in Las Vegas and taking a trip to San Francisco to buy dresses was completely unnecessary and probably suggested by production because they wanted footage of the women doing something and Kody with all the kids. While of course, Kody was supposed to be the Father and in charge, it also really bothers me that TLC production did nothing to intervene for Truly. She would have never reached that level of dehydration if Christine had been there and TLC was responsible for Christine's absence. Maybe my thinking is misguided but it's just hard not to be upset that other adults watched this baby girl deteriorate and did nothing. In more recent years we can think of many examples across many shows of TLC operating in an exploitive or irresponsible fashion but back then I'm not sure we looked at TLC in that light. Kody failed Truly and all the women helped protect him for the show when Christine really wanted to strangle him. Her concern is for her child but when she is forced to sit next to Kody for an interview you can see that she's barely containing her rage towards him and doing it for the "benefit of the family". His lack of accountability is disgusting.

I can't understand Kody and how he treats his children this way. And then again with Ysabel's surgery. My husband would never let us go and he stay at home. Kody is awful and he can't even see it.

Hes not a man. Hes never been a real man. He doesnt show up for important things. He didnt show up for Evies surgery even thou he couldve spent man on man time with caleb Maddies husband. Who he cried with. He didnt show up for Isabels dangerous spine surgery. He didnt show up for Truely who was at deaths door. I cant help but wonder if any of those events happened when it was his day(s) with Robyn so he didnt want to spend that time somewhere eles. Hes not a man. Hes not a father. He has damaged his kids thru neglect and alienation. And because he is a bad human I dont agree that Robyns kids benefit from his influence. I think the proof is in the pudding. Christine did not start to coat with the situation what happened until truly was safe and at home. We see the lot in parents that have children in the NICU & PICU It is truly the point where a family needs the most support and help. They take those children home they're not fully healed and they're not back to normal and you fixate on everything that has happened there is no longer a nurse there 24/7 there's nothing to distract you from your feelings and coping. It's a really really hard time to get through for the parents and depend on the age of the child the child as well.

Dude...I had an incredibly similar experience to Christine, only I was 15 years old, and my deathly sick "child" was my beloved cat. I was going to spend the day at my favorite amusement park with my big sister. I went to check on my "baby" before we left for the day...and I found him hiding under my bed, which was very odd. He was normally very sweet, very mellow, and very much like a baby. But when I reached for him, he hissed at me and actually tried to bite me!!! I was SHOOK! We immediately took him to the vet, and they took him back to be examined. Just 5 minutes later, the vet came out and told us that they had to emergency transport him to the animal hospital nearby, and had us sign consent paperwork. By the time we got to the animal hospital, he was already in surgery. He had a life-threatening urinary blockage. Even though he was ok, and tragedy was averted, I spent the rest of that day crying and shaking...thinking about all the "what ifs." What if I hadn't checked on him when I did? What if we had left for the day...not knowing how sick he was...how much pain he was in? He would have died! I almost lost my sweet boy!
*He lived another 12 years after this, thank God.
So at the age of 15...I had more love and concern for my CAT, then Kody had for his HUMAN child, Truely!!! If I was Christine, I would have left him that day! He doesn't deserve the title of "father" after what he did...or rather, DIDN'T DO. Her older siblings were distraught over Truely's condition, and praying for her health to return...while Kody was probably over at Robyn's house spending time with her and her kids, totally unbothered by what the rest of the family was going through!

Hi James, I love when one of your videos pops up on my feed. You are a class act 😊!
I wanted to share. I was diagnosed with Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) back in the early 90s when I was just 3yrs. I believe this was the diagnosis Truly suffered from.
For context, my family had just buried my father the year before. I spent two months in a hospital an hour away from our home. My mother and older sister (5 yrs) came and visited with me everyday. I must have watched the Little Mermaid on VHS 100x. 😂
I had to receive blood and platelets however, I did not have to go on dialysis. Once I was taken off the feeding tube, I was asked what I would like to have to eat. "I wish for eggs, bacon, and a blueberry muffin." The best breakfast I ever had 😊.

I don't notice the stuff with his friend when I watched but what pissed me off immediately was the fact he didn't stay up there one night, honestly I doubt he stayed up there a whole day it seems like he would stop by and check in for a few minutes and take off again. I feel like I'm going to have to re-watch this episode it's been at least a year since I've watched it but that's what took out to me Christine by her side not ever leaving and him stopping by when it was convenient if I remember correctly he went and did something with Janelle while truly was in the hospital as well. Definitely one of the first signs that Cody wasn't the father he claimed to be. If you were any type of decent parent I know for myself I would be at my child's bedside every waking minute possible!

I don't think how Kody approaches polygamy is how it is universally practiced. He saw each wife as a stepping stone for him to achieve whatever goal he had in his head. He didn't truly love anyone of them he married them out of necessity, Meri to get into polygamy, Janelle to deal woth Meri and Christine to deal with the other two and becauae her family was in high standing with their church at the time. He loves Robin and that's it.
