    Just a note here in case it was unclear. To make use of System Level FSR, you DO need to lower the resolution yourself and then enable FSR on the Steam Deck controls. I can show this more in the full review as a little quick how-to. But don't expect just enabling FSR to automatically lower the games resolution for you. That still needs to be done by you. Hope that clarifies!

      It would be great if they added more methods, and to avoid confusion instead of FSR ON/OFF they could make an Upscaling dropdown menu with options like:
      -Default (Bilinear)
      -FSR
      -Integer
      -Nearest Neighbour

      Been playing with FSR a bit on my laptop running Garuda Linux with Proton "Glorious Eggroll" installed, tried it on Skyrim Special Edition just for fun and with some tweaking it can look pretty decent while boosting preformance quite nicely, and I'd say my laptop is only 50% of the preformance of the Steamdeck with a 16:9 800p screen, so this will be even more fun to test on real hardware

      @@EVPointMaster I'd think that the default upscaling would depend on if the game has its own Upscaling like Control, or if Gamescope is doing the upscaling. I can see why they would just use FSR, since the other choices could be much less meaningful depending on the game and Gamescope settings

    I'm sure steam is aware of this but changing these settings need to be extremely easy and in the future they should have a pop-up like:
    "Hey do you want to try the recommended community/developer settings to maximize quality and battery life?"

    • @UNSCPILOT

      It will be easier once game developers start directly implementing it since they can integrate it into the settings UI.
      For now though I don't mind fussing with it to get my games running exactly how I like, I've been enjoying switching my desktop and laptop over to Linux and fusing over various settings to personalize it and such, having upgraded my laptop and built my desktop it's nice having full control over the software running on my hardware.
      But yeah, for general users it's deffinitly a good idea to make a polished and easy to understand UI to control FSR settings, better still if some games can have "community presets" so new users can get setup quickly and effortlessly before later learning how to "deep dive" into settings like some of us tech nerds like to

      They way technology is incorporated into everybody's life, it's crazy how much hand holding we need for people on PC. People will look up diy for cars, phones, tv's, consoles, homework, and everything under the sun but for PC we need the most hand holding.
      I do get what you saying because people would make it a big deal, even tho the game give you the best settings with initial start of the game.
      They crazy thing I remember back when console gamers use to downplay PC. They mainly talked all these negatives, but now console have gfx sliders, drm even with discs, tons of downloads just to start the game, hacker cheating in games. Smh

      If they just do what they did with controller configs, that would help a lot of people. But there would be problems with security if it included anything like changing game files to support custom resolutions, or special command-line options.

    One of my favorite things about Phawx getting a review unit (other than the plethora of amazing in depth content we get), is that it shows Valve has clearly researched their competition well. • @zer0legend109
      @zer0legend109 2 года назад

      u can't choose both, u either pick better performance or better battery life, the steam deck in this video was frame capped to 60 fps, if it wasn't capped then it would still take the same amount of battery, so it's either a better performance or better battery or a bit mix of the 2, like if the game was not getting solid 60 fps, then fsr would help it to get to that solid 60 fps while maybe saving some battery, but if the game originally is playing 60 fps then the only reason to enable fsr is just to save battery

    • @Saturn2888
      @Saturn2888 2 года назад +1

      @@zer0legend109 The Steam Deck's screen is capped at 60fps so capping the framerate to the screen refresh is both getting better performance and battery life.

    Don’t misunderstand FSR tech.
    Only works when the image is stilled, will dynamically drop quality when the image isn’t stilled to increase performance and frame rate and reduce input lag.
    The “Antialiasing” type that you’re noticing there is just rendering 540p but outputting video (not graphics) to 800p then downscaling it to 720p therefor making the image blurred, afterwards applying AMD sharpening effect to give the appearance that it’s running at 720p.
    NVIDIA and consoles have been secretly doing this for really long time.
    Example: just like those fake 2k TVs that are marketed as 4K. By just supersampling an image then downscaling It to 2k. Making the image look sharper.

    I think FSR will shine a lot when using dock mode, having the same level of performance of handheld while makong the image run nicely on any 4k tv through fsr, this is going to be a game changer compared to switch where it does not perform well on dock even with direct power support because the switch cannot do 1080p properly.

    FSR looking good honestly! DLSS is superior of course, but with so few games supporting it there's little reason to invest into nVidia just for it. Wonder if AMD can use some AI/temporal analysis to improve the quality over vanilla upscaling techniques -- I'd love to see UI/HUD textures rendered natively too!
    AMD has a defacto monopoly over games consoles (bar the Nintendo switch) so they're going to have no shortage of devs to work with to make these improvements reality.
    EDIT: Also another improvement AMD can make using more advanced AI techniques would be text detection to sharpen text differently to the scene.

    The Imgsli comparisons are... uh...
    540p native vs 540p any FSR look identical. Like you could not have FSR at all and it would look the same.
    Even when zoomed in, there is only the slight marginal difference in the DMC image.
    So I guess i don't really understand the point of FSR. Saying that it makes the 540p image look 1% better is generous. Maybe there are games that would be better examples of FSR than Control. But as it is, this truely comes across as a 720p vs 540p comparison.

    I'm not a big fan of FSR... compared to DLSS it just makes everything so blurry. But it is what it is and it's really not a big deal for hand-held use, I'd say. Also applying FSR on top of in-game noise - it shows. Maybe best to turn the noise off (where possible) when using FSR?

      One problem with 6800u is that, while it's more powerful than Steam Deck's APU, ist's TDP is 15-28W. So the problem will be battery power. Steam Deck's APU has TDP of 4-15W and was custom made for a handheld. The 6800u is a laptop/ultrabook APU and people usually play on those when pluged in to power source.
