I loved that Scarlet and Herb weren't your usual Villainess and sidekick where the villainess is cruel and downright abusive and the sidekick is bumbling/resentful, but that they were a loving couple who supported each other. They were one of the sweetest couples that I've seen on screen not only in a kids movie, but in any movie period. They were the highlight of the Minions film for me.
(I know this is a hella old video, comment and movie but I just had to say this) Dude I’m sorry but if they are your number one couple from _any movie_ then you must not watch many movies. Like I saw the minion movie ages ago and I didn’t even remember she had a husband. There are so many loving supportive couples in the film industry out there and this is the one you pick? What about all the Disney couples? Say what you will about Disney movies but you’ve got to admit that despite the tropes, they’ve had some very loving couples. I think my best example is Replunzel and Flynn, who are amazing on their own but are also really great together! And what about Hiccup and Astrid from httyd? They’ve got great chemistry together and have the most charming scenes together. Or all the romance anime movies out there? I don’t watch much anime but I can guarantee that there are tons of really great couples. And that’s just animation. If you look at live action stuff there’s so much! Different genres have couples too, action and horror and drama and comedy, there’s so many better choices. I mean, this is all just my opinion but seriously? This couple?
I'm so glad that I'm not the only person who found myself enjoying this movie. Yeah, most of the jokes sucked, but the minions themselves actually kept it afloat. Like you said, they act like regular people outside of their goofiness, and I just fell in love with the three of them. ESPECIALLY in the scene where they accidentally win Scarlet's employment. I also surprisingly liked the robber family (with exception of the brother), for the same reason. Honestly, one of the biggest things that bugged me was Scarlet's personality in the second half, but that may be based on expecting something much more serious. Overall, Minions isn't the best in the world, but it doesn't deserve all the flack its been getting.

Yeah, i remember watching DM1 with my cousins in the theater (spoiler alert) my favorite part was when Acne saw the Fair and screamed xD But i just think they had the minions in 2nd and 3rd because you know THEY ARE JUST PUTTED IN THE MOVIE BECAUSE their minions!
Their language is actually a mish-mash of multiple languages, and you can actually get quite a laugh out of it if you can piece together what they’re saying

***** To be honest with you, she's funny, but they could have done so much more with her. The movie had it's silly moments though the best part was definitely the beginning. Honestly, I feel the movie would had done better if had just been a series of shorts. Heck let the last half focus more on how the Minions met Gru and how the bunch bonded. Keep Scarlet Overkill, heck maybe have Gru and the minions at first compete to be her underlings.
Honestly, I'm not really into the Despicable Me franchise that much. The first film was serviceable at best. The second one was admittedly very good. Minions was...... meh. It's an underwhelming, unfocused and unfunny mess. Kids will enjoy it but it's worth a skip for the rest at least in my opinion. I'll just say right now that I am not a fan of the Minions themselves. They're kinda charming in their own right and I do see the appeal that people got from them but I just don't find them funny. The only time I found them funny was in the second film. Personally, I found Penguins of Madagascar to be the superior spin-off film. It has much stronger characters with alot of genuine wit and fun personalities. To wrap this up: I am not hyped to see the third film at all but I'll still see it to see how much they can improve(not holding my breath to be honest).
The movie was enjoyable, but it could have been better. It's one of those REALLY rare time where I agree with IGN, the movie needed more Minions and less bland humans :P
Its more or less a problem with the idea of making a minion movie in general. See, in the first movie they were funny because they made a good contras to the (Somewhat) normal things happening with Gru and the likes. They can be funny, but the problem is their humor is mostly based around about, four or five jokes, depending on the scene. And when making a full movie, you have to make sure these things are interesting/funny enough to be the focus of a full film. But the problem is that its not even a good idea in that regard ether, unlike "The Penguins of Madagascar", the minions don't have enough personality and character to them to short a full film. To quote Doug Walker. "Its like everything that should be in the background is in the foreground and everything that should be in the foreground is in the background."
Rob Bob The movie need it a heart and soul to begin with.You can put out many minions on screen it would still be the same shitty tiresome product we got.If they wanted to do a origin story with them why not use a story that takes place days after their creation rather than retconing their supposed origin dropped by nefarious.As that idea alone could have more heart and soul rather theone illumination's excuse for a plot.
7/10 for me. I will give the movie credit on two things: 1. At the least this "spin-off" didn't sacrifice the personality of the Minions and make them annoying to the point where I want to yell "SHUT UP!" to them. 2. It's a way better spin-off than Planet Sheen. The only question I have about the advertising is who was worse: The Minions movie, or The Lorax?

Dead Cat Despicable Me 3 is a thing and it's coming out in 2017 along with an adaptation of The Grinch. Also, that would be a cool idea. GamerGirl55561 The untitled release actually has a name now. It's called Sing. The film is pretty much what American Idol would be like if it took place in Zootopia. Also, Illumination has set 3 films for 2018, 2019 & 2020 (one film per year). They have not said what they are yet. I only said "Okay" for Sing before they announced the title because I had already known what the film was about.
Ugh I don't think I can ever make myself watch the Minions. They kinda just remind of everything I hate about Olaf (And dear lord do I hate Olaf) but 100x more obnoxious and instead of one, there are thousands, and to make it worse, now they're the main characters. I guess I just tend to hate 90% of comic relief characters, and those are the ones that always seem to get their own movie. I'm never going to find solely slapstick, butt/sex jokes, and "lol so randum" speech and actions funny or entertaining at all, and from what I've gathered from the trailers and reviews I've watched, that's all it is. (I'll admit, Scarlet does look kinda cool, but she's not the main character, so it's still not worth it for me) Maybe my hatred for them is unreasonable, but, like everyone has pointed out, these stupid little twinkies are literally EVERYWHERE. My friends love them, my friends parents love them, my friends dogs probably love them, and that alone wouldn't bother me if it weren't for the fact that a lot of those people made fun of me because I watch a lot of cartoons and animated stuff like Gravity Falls and Steven Universe, and because I wanted to see Big Hero 6 in theaters and all that, yet many of those same friends are now parading around in minion merchandise and going in groups to watch it in theaters and I'm this close to blasting myself into the sun so I never have to so much as hear the word "banana" in a funny voice ever again. Olaf is actually pretty cleverly written as far as modern comic relief goes. He's certainly not comparable to the minions. Most of his jokes come directly from who he is; he's a snowman who doesn't understand anything about the world. He acts like a dumbass because he's basically a newborn baby who can talk, NOT because "lol so random". The fact that you're throwing two COMPLETELY different characters in the same basket like they're the same thing tells me you just have a problem with comic relief in general; to which I'd like to remind you that SHAKESPEARE utilised comic relief characters. The problem isn't comic relief, it's that studios are more focused on money than making a good movie and won't allow WELL WRITTEN comic relief in very many movies. Because the sad truth is, they've seen that shit comic relief sells better. But that's a problem with every aspect of modern film making, not just comic relief; and I feel that's what you're misunderstanding. The comic relief problem is a symptom of a bigger issue. It by itself is not the issue.
Yeah, the last two minutes steal the entire show, and was easily the best part. Heck, it was the main reason I bought the movie on DVD, just so I could go straight to that part and watch it over and over again!
I was kinda worried considering its best not to have the comic relief as the main character since they're created as a foil to the protagonist and usual doesn't have enough depth to carry a movie, I seeing how well received the movie is it looks like they found the right balance!

I think people don't do Dispicable me justice when they say the movie is bad just because of the minions, Yes the minions are irritating and appear alot in the movie, but the rest of the movie is still great in my opinion
The only worthy points that I saw in the movie were the following: Bob and the three minutes of Smol Gru. Scarlet felt like a discount genderswapped Gru (Minus the accent (or a design that I can find memorable), and if they ever bring her back, I hope that they can cast someone who has experience as playing as an actual Villian like Tara Strong, Wendy Powell, whoever played as Lust from FMA:B, or the voice actress that played as Azula.
How to train your dragon 2 sucks Especially the mother, who dumped her kid for a dragon. Her maternal instinct is basically dead, which means she's worse that a rat at this point.
Ordemarebys httyd is based on a world where the bond with your dragon is something very close to your heart. I can't imagine Hiccup without Toothless, at some points they seem like one person. There's no doubt that he got that from his mother, who actually was kidnapped by Cloudjumper, and just didn't have the courage to come back. I agree that she should have come back for her son and husband, but I get that fear.

That actually makes a lot of sense so that a continuity error of Minions (which is a guilty pleasure for me. Sure, it has been widely dismissed in the late 2010s as painfully average like most Illumination films, but while not one of the most, it’s too batshit insane not to defend!).
Minions don’t speak in gibberish, it’s actually called minion language where they mix a bunch of languages together which is why sometimes you hear them say Si or kamusta
My only nitpick about this video is how the background music and the narration feels like trying to focus on a teacher while students talk all around you. That's probably fixed by now, though. I just srarted really watching these.

Great review. I watched this Netflix last Friday and I thought it was enjoyable. Not as good as the first two "Despicable Me" films or "The Secret Life of Pets", but still enjoyable. This is one of the few reviews (besides AniMat's) that is not too harsh on the film. I feel like this movie is getting too much hate (in my opinion).
The DM3 just don't fit in the story! Their there because there... MINIONS, and kids love them, so ofc when you walk in the theater to watch Minions a million kids are with their parents with Minion merchandise! Almost walked out.
I think that the end of the movie was stupid,the way Gru met the minions is dum,they could come up with a better idea: 1.Gru just accepted the fact that tiny yellow creatures(some of them hve one eye) are chasing him. 2.How on earth did the minions chase a FREAKING FLYING JET LIKE MECHINE!? 3.Gru just took the crown and no one seemed to care. 4.THE FACT THAT SCARLET AND KEVIN SURVIVED THE EXPLOTION!

In my opinion Herb was too much like Vector. Overall I think this film is alrightish but it does have some really bad examples it's young target demographic. (which is pretty much inevitable considering that it follows characters that want to serve villains, but still.)
Herb was cooler and a lot less rememborable than Vector to me. The joke with Vector was that he was so full of himself yet was clumsy, not attractive, and a little bit dumb. The only thing that made him capable was that he had a rich Dad and only cared about himself mainly. Herb is just kind of there and just does what he does.

Minions had the girls, though I don't think you noticed them. The three main minions IN the film that it focuses on are all based on the three girls, in terms of design and characteristics.
Out of the three protagonists I felt that Stuart was pretty forgettable compared to the other two. Kevin had the most time as the main protagonist out of the three since he was the most visually distinct and usually portrayed as the leader of the group. Bob got his day in the limelight as *KING BOOOOOOOOB* Stuart was there. I can't remember what he was doing.
I saw minions at a drive through with my 5 and eight year old cousins. Afterwards, when the 5 year old was asked about the movie, all she had to say was "Meh." A FIVE YEAR OLD. I feel the same...

Overall, the movie was ok considering it was a movie specifically about the minions. The minions were never meant to be featured film material on their own, but the movie did do its best with that handicap.
Now that we're generally out of the promotional craze, I started giving these movies a chance. Honestly, kindof agree. They're not horrendous. It's a movie where, if the kids are watching it, I don't feel like it's a chore to stay and watch it with them, and it does get a chuckle out of me, especially for the pyramid scheme.
Having seen the movie my thoughts can be summed up by the wise words of Gru's mother: "Eh..."

Something I love about scarlet overkill is that instead of some over powered ability, she uses her brain to get what she wants

The movie had it's silly moments though the best part was definitely the beginning. Honestly, I feel the movie would had done better if had just been a series of shorts. Heck let the last half focus more on how the Minions met Gru and how the bunch bonded. Keep Scarlet Overkill, heck maybe have Gru and the minions at first compete to be her underlings.
Honestly, I'm not really into the Despicable Me franchise that much.
The first film was serviceable at best.
The second one was admittedly very good.
Minions was...... meh. It's an underwhelming, unfocused and unfunny mess. Kids will enjoy it but it's worth a skip for the rest at least in my opinion.
I'll just say right now that I am not a fan of the Minions themselves. They're kinda charming in their own right and I do see the appeal that people got from them but I just don't find them funny. The only time I found them funny was in the second film.
Personally, I found Penguins of Madagascar to be the superior spin-off film. It has much stronger characters with alot of genuine wit and fun personalities.
To wrap this up: I am not hyped to see the third film at all but I'll still see it to see how much they can improve(not holding my breath to be honest).
The movie was enjoyable, but it could have been better.
It's one of those REALLY rare time where I agree with IGN, the movie needed more Minions and less bland humans :P
Its more or less a problem with the idea of making a minion movie in general.
See, in the first movie they were funny because they made a good contras to the (Somewhat) normal things happening with Gru and the likes. They can be funny, but the problem is their humor is mostly based around about, four or five jokes, depending on the scene.
And when making a full movie, you have to make sure these things are interesting/funny enough to be the focus of a full film. But the problem is that its not even a good idea in that regard ether, unlike "The Penguins of Madagascar", the minions don't have enough personality and character to them to short a full film.
To quote Doug Walker.
"Its like everything that should be in the background is in the foreground and everything that should be in the foreground is in the background."
Rob Bob The movie need it a heart and soul to begin with.You can put out many minions on screen it would still be the same shitty tiresome product we got.If they wanted to do a origin story with them why not use a story that takes place days after their creation rather than retconing their supposed origin dropped by nefarious.As that idea alone could have more heart and soul rather theone illumination's excuse for a plot.
The Gru cameo was my favorite part about this movie
7/10 for me. I will give the movie credit on two things: 1. At the least this "spin-off" didn't sacrifice the personality of the Minions and make them annoying to the point where I want to yell "SHUT UP!" to them. 2. It's a way better spin-off than Planet Sheen. The only question I have about the advertising is who was worse: The Minions movie, or The Lorax?

EdXLover1 Ok. And honestly I think the Lorax's merchandising was worse. It makes the movie seems hypocritical when it's selling itself out and it's promoting a car which use fossil fuels to harm the environment in a film that is about promoting clear air by saving the trees.

GamerGirl55561 The untitled release actually has a name now. It's called Sing. The film is pretty much what American Idol would be like if it took place in Zootopia.
Also, Illumination has set 3 films for 2018, 2019 & 2020 (one film per year). They have not said what they are yet. I only said "Okay" for Sing before they announced the title because I had already known what the film was about.

Ugh I don't think I can ever make myself watch the Minions. They kinda just remind of everything I hate about Olaf (And dear lord do I hate Olaf) but 100x more obnoxious and instead of one, there are thousands, and to make it worse, now they're the main characters. I guess I just tend to hate 90% of comic relief characters, and those are the ones that always seem to get their own movie. I'm never going to find solely slapstick, butt/sex jokes, and "lol so randum" speech and actions funny or entertaining at all, and from what I've gathered from the trailers and reviews I've watched, that's all it is. (I'll admit, Scarlet does look kinda cool, but she's not the main character, so it's still not worth it for me)
Maybe my hatred for them is unreasonable, but, like everyone has pointed out, these stupid little twinkies are literally EVERYWHERE. My friends love them, my friends parents love them, my friends dogs probably love them, and that alone wouldn't bother me if it weren't for the fact that a lot of those people made fun of me because I watch a lot of cartoons and animated stuff like Gravity Falls and Steven Universe, and because I wanted to see Big Hero 6 in theaters and all that, yet many of those same friends are now parading around in minion merchandise and going in groups to watch it in theaters and I'm this close to blasting myself into the sun so I never have to so much as hear the word "banana" in a funny voice ever again.

That's not most of Olaf's content though. Olaf is actually pretty cleverly written as far as modern comic relief goes. He's certainly not comparable to the minions. Most of his jokes come directly from who he is; he's a snowman who doesn't understand anything about the world. He acts like a dumbass because he's basically a newborn baby who can talk, NOT because "lol so random".
The fact that you're throwing two COMPLETELY different characters in the same basket like they're the same thing tells me you just have a problem with comic relief in general; to which I'd like to remind you that SHAKESPEARE utilised comic relief characters. The problem isn't comic relief, it's that studios are more focused on money than making a good movie and won't allow WELL WRITTEN comic relief in very many movies. Because the sad truth is, they've seen that shit comic relief sells better. But that's a problem with every aspect of modern film making, not just comic relief; and I feel that's what you're misunderstanding. The comic relief problem is a symptom of a bigger issue. It by itself is not the issue.
I watched this movie and felt like something was missing.
Then I realised the thing that was missing was a plot.

Yeah, the last two minutes steal the entire show, and was easily the best part.
Heck, it was the main reason I bought the movie on DVD, just so I could go straight to that part and watch it over and over again!
I was kinda worried considering its best not to have the comic relief as the main character since they're created as a foil to the protagonist and usual doesn't have enough depth to carry a movie, I seeing how well received the movie is it looks like they found the right balance!

I think people don't do Dispicable me justice when they say the movie is bad just because of the minions,
Yes the minions are irritating and appear alot in the movie, but the rest of the movie is still great in my opinion
The only worthy points that I saw in the movie were the following: Bob and the three minutes of Smol Gru. Scarlet felt like a discount genderswapped Gru (Minus the accent (or a design that I can find memorable), and if they ever bring her back, I hope that they can cast someone who has experience as playing as an actual Villian like Tara Strong, Wendy Powell, whoever played as Lust from FMA:B, or the voice actress that played as Azula.
I've just got to applaud the choice to use "Happy Together" in the background. Brilliant, and just adds so much. Kudos.

How to train your dragon 2 sucks Especially the mother, who dumped her kid for a dragon. Her maternal instinct is basically dead, which means she's worse that a rat at this point.
Ordemarebys httyd is based on a world where the bond with your dragon is something very close to your heart. I can't imagine Hiccup without Toothless, at some points they seem like one person. There's no doubt that he got that from his mother, who actually was kidnapped by Cloudjumper, and just didn't have the courage to come back. I agree that she should have come back for her son and husband, but I get that fear.

That actually makes a lot of sense so that a continuity error of Minions (which is a guilty pleasure for me. Sure, it has been widely dismissed in the late 2010s as painfully average like most Illumination films, but while not one of the most, it’s too batshit insane not to defend!).

Great review. I watched this Netflix last Friday and I thought it was enjoyable. Not as good as the first two "Despicable Me" films or "The Secret Life of Pets", but still enjoyable. This is one of the few reviews (besides AniMat's) that is not too harsh on the film. I feel like this movie is getting too much hate (in my opinion).
And "Minions" will not be as good as "Sing", but it's still entertaining.

I think that the end of the movie was stupid,the way Gru met the minions is dum,they could come up with a better idea:
1.Gru just accepted the fact that tiny yellow creatures(some of them hve one eye) are chasing him.

3.Gru just took the crown and no one seemed to care.

I disagree entirely. I hate the little gits. I even hates the first film. Hated them then and now. It will never end. Loved the video though, so have a like.
In my opinion Herb was too much like Vector. Overall I think this film is alrightish but it does have some really bad examples it's young target demographic. (which is pretty much inevitable considering that it follows characters that want to serve villains, but still.)
Herb was cooler and a lot less rememborable than Vector to me. The joke with Vector was that he was so full of himself yet was clumsy, not attractive, and a little bit dumb. The only thing that made him capable was that he had a rich Dad and only cared about himself mainly. Herb is just kind of there and just does what he does.

The minions aren't actually speaking in gibberish. Unless I have the most active imagination ever, their speech is largely based off of a hodgepodge of Romance languages.
The next original Illuminations Entertainment film with the planes reminds me of Planes: The Video Game where Bravo and Echo go to Deadstick Desert.

Minions had the girls, though I don't think you noticed them. The three main minions IN the film that it focuses on are all based on the three girls, in terms of design and characteristics.
Out of the three protagonists I felt that Stuart was pretty forgettable compared to the other two.
Kevin had the most time as the main protagonist out of the three since he was the most visually distinct and usually portrayed as the leader of the group.
Bob got his day in the limelight as *KING BOOOOOOOOB*
Stuart was there. I can't remember what he was doing.

Funny thing is, I actually wish the segment with the Happy-go-lucky criminal family was actually entertaining. They meshed well, the voice acting was written well, and they acted like an actual family qith the major offset of the whole family being criminals. I like to refer to this scene as one of "Illumination's Happy Accidents" moments, but WHY COULDN'T WE GET A MOVIE ON THAT INSTEAD OF A MOVIE BASED ON THESE HAIRY, LEMON-SCENTED TIC-TACS?!?

Overall, the movie was ok considering it was a movie specifically about the minions. The minions were never meant to be featured film material on their own, but the movie did do its best with that handicap.
I saw this in 3D because my aunt is obsessed with Minions
Now that we're generally out of the promotional craze, I started giving these movies a chance. Honestly, kindof agree. They're not horrendous. It's a movie where, if the kids are watching it, I don't feel like it's a chore to stay and watch it with them, and it does get a chuckle out of me, especially for the pyramid scheme.
I don't have cable so I don't see many commercials... yay!
