Here I am commenting two years later. Measha's version still thrills me! Kevin's guitar compliments Measha's performance and the splendid orchestra, casting a spell over many of us I am certain. A once in a lifetime musical experience. Thanks Measha, Joni, Kevin and orchestra.
I cant even express how transported I was by this performance...this is simply the greatest fusion of jazz and folk and classical and rock that i have ever heard. Measha is a rare talent, peerless in this generation. There could be no better tribute to joni.
A soprano sneak attack: She starts out like a café singer, then next, a show singer.... moving on... she's a broadway singer... but she still has a secret weapon that most of those singers don't have. And that's when it happens, after the guitar solo, she launches the missile: a full-tilt, world class operatic soprano. Bam!
I can listen to this song of Joni Mitchell by Measha every day.. I first heard the song from the movie "Love Actually", I loved it then and I love it now. That's why I play it at least once a week.
Just saw her tonight in Toronto with Opera Atelier in Mozart's "La Clemenza Di Tito". A true rock-star soprano, DG recording artist, and, to paraphrase Amadeus, "an ornament on our state."
I just heard Measha sing at Thomson Hall in Toronto this week. What a chameleon she is. This version of Joni's Clouds is one of a kind. It is matchless. Who has such range and power? I hope Joni enjoyed this unique version. It is a real compliment to her and one that moved me tremendously.
Wow................................shocked with there being ANY negative comments..........................perhaps keep it to yourself, although it diminishes NOT the affect it has.....was moving and powerful when I watched live on TV, and now even moreso as I've experienced a great loss.......
I totally agree with the Eileen Farrell comparison, up until now I though Eileen was the only Opera singer who could get away with singing outside of that genre. Thank God for Measha!!
Well what could I say. Well of course it is great and outstanding .. This is such a dramatic performance...amazing voice.... but it looks a bit like pure Baroque... It looks like working for the golden medal... on the Olympics. But it isn't simple to see it as someone who's lost in thoughts, who 's musing or contemplating. (just a few minutes at the beginning perhaps..) And it certainly has the meaning to bring a great tribute to Joni Mitchell. But in this case "Both Sides Now" becomes great "opera" ...and "opera" is dramatic in essential . And without any doubts her voice is pure magical ..but... A lot of decades ago I had a docent...Who said these wise words about artistic creating: "Don't make it too heavy or too weighty" And if you know : This is "opera".. Then you could see it in another way.... It could bring you goose bumps or bring you in tears... just like opera could do. Today lots of performers bring the song "Both Sides Now" ....."too slow , too uneventful, too dull and too boring". And when not... then the risk of "overacting", of "hamming with too much of decoration" is everywhere. And of course there're some exceptional artists who gives priority to the expression of the aimed feelings and (for exemple ...Unni Wilhelmsen... but...!) Personnaly I like the old school the most... Judy Collins (at the piano in 1987), Joni Mitchell herself (in that album of 2000), Julio Bernardo Euson, even Bing Crosby did it very well..... But maybe we 're arrived in another time-segment...just like that time right after the renaissance.. in Italy... The time of mannerism. it was a time where every artistic "form giving" that could be achieved has been already achieved. And they get into a time of competition and competitive spirit.... and It was such a time of using characteristic distortion and exaggerations. And nobody of us can say that "El Greco, Bronzino, Tintoretto, Cellini... aren't great artists...And so was it in the music at that time we know what happens in the music.. a time of contrapuntally polyphonic music... But there was more up in the society ... there was more going on outside.... as just this deformations in the artistic style.. and so it is in our time now.
The comment by Paul Emond says the guitarist is Kevin Breit. I don't know Kevin Breit well enough to answer definitively, but looks quite likely to me that Mr. Emond is correct.
I have listened to a hundred renditions of Joni and I have to say I can agree with your feelings. One has to know the words to appreciate the emotion, so a newbie to this 'song' will experience it as vocal acrobatics- which is awesome btw- just that it fucks up the beautiful, heartfelt and very sensitive lyrics.
Joni Mitchell's delivery is still the finest. I had the same experience this was more of an excercise in extremes. Vocal acrobatics' is fair. I felt the beginning 20 seconds could've been dialed in -balanced with more volume on her voice over the orchestra and guitar.

bravissima....stupenda. una delle più belle interpretazioni di questa meravigliosa canzone. Un brivido lungo sei minuti.
This shit never seems to get old. I can listen to it repeatedly….and have, over the years.
Love love love.
Perfection in every way.
My funeral farewell song.

A perfect response!
Love how you described.
No matter how many times I come back to this, it always leaves me weeping. Measha, brilliant. I'm so glad I was able to tell you that in person.
Finally, a CANADIAN DIVA!!!!! From New Brunswick!!! Indeed! And so fashion conscious!!!

I can listen to this song of Joni Mitchell by Measha every day.. I first heard the song from the movie "Love Actually", I loved it then and I love it now. That's why I play it at least once a week.
Perfection....I get the chills every time I watch this
love that guitar work
Just saw her tonight in Toronto with Opera Atelier in Mozart's "La Clemenza Di Tito". A true rock-star soprano, DG recording artist, and, to paraphrase Amadeus, "an ornament on our state."
Her voice is beautiful and I'm in love with her hair!
I've been waiting for this to be posted since I saw the concert on tv. YAY!! THANKS!

I was very much going to dis the operatic spin on the 3rd verse, but after awhile, you cannot deny the beauty of it.
Stellar performance!
Please please please release a download or CD of this performance. It's a treasure.

Shivers, good shivers.

Measha is magnificent!! Love you, Measha!!
Wow................................shocked with there being ANY negative comments..........................perhaps keep it to yourself, although it diminishes NOT the affect it has.....was moving and powerful when I watched live on TV, and now even moreso as I've experienced a great loss.......
Breathless....

She's so beautiful.... oh wow...

Is this version on an album as of yet? I absolutely was mesmorized by the version on the Olympics
Well what could I say.

Found a new treasure!
Beautiful
Brava, Diva!
Tears.
I think Ms Mitchell would approve- she was in the audience...just wonderful
Quarantine 2020
Amazing
The version heard on the Olympics was not this one. It was the version sung by Joni Mitchell on her "Both Sides Now" album from 2000.
And she isn't whiny sounding like Renée Fleming. Hope to hear something new soon!
Love it❤️❤️❤️
Goosebombs!
Eleni Rose, look up Frederica Von Stade and Renee Fleming!
no words
Does anyone know who the guitarist is?
Never heard of her, not bad, but I still like Natalie Cole's version better.
WOW..u got your wish.
Wow!
Did anybody find out who is the guitarist?
The comment by Paul Emond says the guitarist is Kevin Breit. I don't know Kevin Breit well enough to answer definitively, but looks quite likely to me that Mr. Emond is correct.
Yes, it is Kevin Beit. He was introduced
🇨🇦
Farrel was good...but lacked the colour and versatility of Measha's voice and presentation...well, it was different era.
@schari30 great comment
this is so f*ing dramatic.
she really messed that up
+Jeff Thomas Time for your medication.

Loved the beginning. Then it ended up a scream fest. The song got lost in the high operatic part. Singing should served the song, not the singer.
From an operatic perspective, it was spectacular.
From the intelligence shown in your comment, I would bet your are voting for Donald Trump.
I'm voting for him, and I'm quite intelligent. So...
Wasn't feeling the emotion in the song. Seemed rushed and not heartfelt. Just vocal acrobatics.
