I will never understand why this has not been considered one of the greatest songs ever written. First heard it in 1966, maybe it was 1967. I lived a little north of Boston, and on those cold late Friday afternoons in October and November, when I walked up the street to my job at a restaurant (with my collar pulled up), this song went through my head. I also remember jumping on the bus to get into Symphony Hall in Boston to get a few tickets to hear Tom play, and getting back in time to work at my job. That was my first date, taking Sandy in to hear Tom Rush play.

Somehow I never heard this until a couple years ago when I got the first "Archives" release on vinyl at Record Store day. I think it is one of the best songs ever, too. So sad, and yet she knows how to save herself. I just did a nature walk program searching for signs of life in a winter landscape for the Jung Society of Cleveland. I thought it was the perfect song to start with.

To make is more confusing, people make such a big deal out of Joni's other songs, like Big Yellow Taxi and Carey. But she gets no attention at all for The Midway Song, Chelsea Morning, Circle Game, or this one. Leaves me scratching my head and losing faith in the tastes of music listeners.

I love Tom's cover of the tune. 1972 I went away to college and for the first time, I was alone away from family and friends. It was the fall and the time for leaving, and this song paints both the picture and the melancholy, the urge for going, and the separation that it leaves one with.

I break down into tears every time I hear this song. I mean sobbing. Which can be a problem if I am at a concert, in a crowd.
This song speaks to me on so many levels. A tanned beautiful girlfriend from high school who dumped me when summer faded. I guess she always knew what was coming, but it was a surprise to me.
Once in the woods alone, seeing geese take flight with no warning. Not a test run, just suddenly leaving.
A collective body all at once, getting the urge for going.
My mother passing last Spring. Holding her hand. And suddenly knowing, only seconds before, that she had the urge for going.
When the meadow grass is turning brown. And all her empire's falling down. And winter's closing in.

I have always been haunted this song. Heard Tom Rush's version in 1970 and it is still my favorite. My wife always loved it, I played it for her when we met in '71. I learned to play and sing it for her for all these years.
It was the opening song for the Celebration of Her Life this last spring. She got the urge for going and I had to let her go. i hope she still loves it, make me cry every time. Fly on, Little Wing

It was during the late sixties at the Riverboat in Toronto I saw Tom Rush for the first time live. I knew he was into Joni Mitchell's material and at a prime moment during his set, in between songs I called out "Urge For Going." He looked back at his lead guitar player for approval and the magic kicked in. To this day when I revive that moment it takes me right back to that most special evening and that wonderful era that I'm so happy and thankful to have experienced.

Joni Mitchell wrote this when she was like 25? So it always struck me as a young women's song, but this version slowed down and weathered brings maturity, nuance, and seasoning to Joni's comparatively bright version.

Saw Tom perform at the Chessmate the evening of that fateful day in ‘67. After he was done, many of the folkies left and missed Sam Lay and his blues band from Chicago. My apartment mate John Crews and I left at 2AM. Hopped on our bikes and rode back to Albion. Didn’t know until we turned the tv on the next day, Sunday morning, that the riot had begun the night before.

The studio version, on his Circle Game album when he was 27, sounded great -- and here he is on this recording when he was 69, still sounding every bit as good!
