Definately 1 of the top 5 female song-smiths ever. Possibly top 3, or maybe even number 1. It gives me a lump in my throat to think we are loosing the architects of the golden years of music more frequently now. At the same time im glad at how spoilt our generations have been as far as this fine culture goes.
It was at this festival in 1966 that Judy Collins introduced Joni Mitchell to her audience. Collins was the first to cover and record Both Sides Now and made Mitchell's song a huge hit. To me, what makes this song and Mitchell so iconic was that she had as a 23 year old the ability to write with such profound insight what for most us is only gained over many years and realized by 79 year olds, like her .... now. I first heard her sing it as a 25 year old. I marveled at its insights then and as a 79 year oldster in a few weeks ... still.
I learnt this song when I was about 20, thanks to Dianne Reeves cover. Now 30 years later, I finally understand a bit of what it means. We will always marvel. :)
I used to sing and play this song on the guitar that I taught myself how to play when I was about 14 or 15. Hearing this was so beautiful I almost cried.
Not really. Honoring would have been not trying to hog the spotlight. But all night Carlisle upstaged Joni with her self-absorbed, childish antics. I was screaming at the screen "IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU! SIT STILL OR GET IFF THE STAGE!"
A message to you Joni Mitchell: your songs are not just music, they are part of us, they are part of our lives. We thank you for everything you have done. Thanks.
I could care less who wrote it. The woman who sang this version is my hero and a legend in her time. She's in her golden years now let's enjoy it with her.
This performance really drives home the truth about something being lost and gained every day. Age slows us all down, but it also bring wisdom and joy. Joni, I think you do know life.
I am 68 years old and have adored Joni since I was a teenager. And I have long considered her to be the single greatest artist of my lifetime. And this performance has moved me in a way I can’t even describe. She wrote the soundtrack to my life. My beloved husband died recently, and now Joni has sung the anthem to surviving all that life throws at you, and being able to gain more than you lost. I will play this every night to help me look forward to the next day.
@@dcaposey Thank you so much. Joni is a testament to strength and courage; losing everything to a brain aneurysm, and gaining a depth to her talent and connection to her fans that she might not have attained otherwise.
I'm 66 and feel the same. When living in my first apartment my friends and i would gather around and sing "Joni" (or try to) as loud as we could. She sang the soundtrack of our lives.
One of my favorite aspects of this is how Brandi Carlile handled it. She was ready to step in and support or fill in for Joni if she faltered, but as Joni carried it on her own, Brandi stepped back and let her shine.
Simply transcendental. Brandi Carlile's gentle supportive presence facilitates Joni's delivery. There's a few moments where Brandi prompts Joni delivery as she intuitively senses she may struggle recalling the next words but this is done so sensitively most of the audience wouldn't notice - truly humbling.
And the pure joy on Brandi’s face at 1:52 when Joni lands her notes so perfectly. Transcendental, for sure. And the words of congratulations. Joni nailed it, and Brandi was there for it; all in.
@@capt.k6554 literally does not happen without her, Joni is only there performing for the first time in 20+ years because she trusts Brandi to guide her. You can feel whatever you want about Brandi’s contributions but she’s clearly chiming in when she senses Joni struggling with a lyric.
It's always been a great song but it was as if it was meant to be sung on this day in this place. As if as a young woman she wrote this song for her older self to sing. Amazing, and her joyful laughter at the end was precious.
Please tell me that I am not the only person in the world that has to watch this video a few times a day? Just an absolutely amazing performance. Thank you Brandi for helping Joni to continue to share her amazing gifts with the world !
50 years of permission she gave the world to feel and know and be from such a deeper place. She is transcending limitation for all of us to step up ourselves. I love you, Dear Joni💕
My granny and I would play this on her organ and sing along. It was 1967 and I got the piano charts for my birthday. It is one of my most cherished memories ever.
I was visiting my mom and was playing the piano at her house, and found a Joni Mitchell songbook. I found the chart for 'Both Sides Now' and started playing... mom came up and stood next to me and started singing it, and then burst into tears. I love you mom, and thank you Joni.

I just turned 70. I've been listening to this song since I was an adolescent. I finally understand just how little I know and understand. I've made every mistake I could possibly make. I've wasted golden opportunities, and succumbed to every illusion that passed by. I have survived by grace alone, and I really don't know life at all, but I know that I love you, Joni. You have been a blessed companion on my trip to Hell and back, and I thank you from the bottom of this old heart!
I looked at her performances of this song in her 20’s…40’s and this one now she’s in her 70’s. THIS RENDITION IS THE ONE for me…she brought tears to my eyes. She touched my heart 😢
A different voice now but as she sang, somethings lost but somethings gained. A richness & mellowness that life & natural aging has gifted. What a cherished performance. It will stay in my heart forever ❤
Whew this snuck up on me. Joni's delivery of "I really don't know love at all" hit me like a train, and I started to sob for the first time in I don't know how long. An incredible performance of the perfect song. Searingly, devastatingly beautiful.
So glad I found this video. This song helped through first heartbreak, this stupid girl crying over an idiot boy! Now, am 72 yrs old, married 50 years to a wonderful man who never gave me a reason to shed tears. Thank you Ms Joni for telling us to "look at life from both sides". I still cry listening to this song but appreciate our good fortune for having you in our generation.
I don't know how Brandi isn't bawling her eyes out on stage because I'm sitting at my desk with tears rolling down my face. Joni sounds amazing, the age in her voice giving the song even more poignance. Just a titan of American music right there.
Hey. They played together in private. By the sounds of it with Paul McCartney and Elton John etc. but your tears are valid. I had mine too. Our world reduces everything to content. Fleeting entertaining rubbish. This was “something.” A display of human spirit. It took me by total surprise. I had no reason to hope Joni would see a stage again. Who did? You, me and everyone who was moved. Just experienced what the power of music really is. We are united.
She performs this song in her age like it's meant to be sung; a song ripened to perfection. Unbelievable. In my opinion, the most beautifully written song ever.
It DOES NOT, cannot get better than this. It doesn't matter I wasn't there in the crowd or there on the stage-- this moment means so much to everyone who saw it. :) What a gift. Thank-you Joni, Brandi and everyone who made this happen. Sending Joni even more healing prayers for even more returns to full health. I grew up listening to the magic of my Dad's records from the 60s and 70s and it doesn't need to be said, Joni is still the folk matriarch of all, no matter the generation. x Love you Joni.
12/30/22 @ 10:30 AM: I first experienced this song as a young boy in the sixties. The first version was sung by a youthful Judy Collins. I had yet to hear the songwriter’s version. Having heard the story behind the lyrics from Joni at a concert at a concert in the early seventies, added many layers with more than a little gravitas and emotion. I’m a nutshell, Joni Mitchell is a treasure!
So amazing...at about 3:49 you can hear Brandi Carllile whisper "tears and fears" to Joni, who had clearly lost her place in the song. And then Brandi steps in and brings it back around on track, so that Joni can finish out the song so stunningly. Planned or just magical musicians supporting Joni, it matters not. It is an exceptional, beautiful moment in the entire beautiful moment of this recording! Props! Stunning!
This was my mom’s favourite song…. Drove me crazy when I was a kid. She’d play Joni and almost only Joni….. now I’m laying here in tears coming across this….. missing my Mom ❤️❤️ Joni you are legend ❤️
Brandi is so moved by this. When Joni starts she is barely holding back tears, at the end she is overwhelmed and filled with joy. Her emotional response to and impact on other singers is really phenomenal. Literally.
Looks like Brandi was holding her heart to keep it from cracking wide open -- such joy! Joni is a legend and a gift to us all. We are bound to each other by music 🎶🥰
Brandi, as a supremely gifted performer herself, has the good sense to be in awe of every nuance & phrasing that Joni springs on us unexpectedly in real time. Oh, and, by the way, Joni is a Canadian & an American treasure.
Aged 15 in 1970, I bought "Ladies Of The Canyon" from Virgin Mail Order via the Melody Maker. All my life I've gathered just about every recording this woman has made, on every format. When, in 2015, she suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm, I, like so many of us, was utterly devastated. It looked like she would never be able to sing again. So, you can imagine the joy and depth of emotion this "Empress Of Song" is generating in my heart and across the globe right now, as we witness this weekend's magical moments....🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
we are the same age and went through the same feelings....she was my muse as i suffered childhood with her as my balm. I love her still and just never ever want her to die.
We'll said! I can remember listening to this on repeat when I was in my teens. And now I'm listening with tears in my eyes, a lump in my throat and a swelling in my heart. Thank you Joni! And Bless you and Brandy!
Just as it should be. Human. I don't have any use for all these younger acts and their perfectly choreographed routines and voice correcting software and outright lip synching. This is where you find beauty.
Thank you everyone and anyone who had anything to do with making this. Thank you Joni. I feel like I've seen the face of god. The laughter at the end is beautiful.
Thank you to Brandi Carlisle for having the idea of doing this after she had been a part of the Joni Jam sessions. What I found especially moving about this was Wynonna Judd wiping tears away as she sang backing vocals. I read an interview with her yesterday and she said how special it had been to be asked to be part of this. She mentioned that she sang this song at her 8th grade graduation and how it reminded her of her mom. Very touching.
She wrote this at 23 so that her 78 years old self would never forget that Joni esp after overcoming a brain aneurysm. It is a divine gift to create something that willl heal your heart and mind when were older. It is a testament to the profound power of music. God bless you Joni!❤
You're not alone Caelan. I'm 61, and I heard this song first when I was 12 years old. It grabbed me then, it's so strongly emotional... Joni is an angel sent hear to make us feel deeply. I nearly died in my forties from a disease that nearly killed Joni (Morgellon's Syndrome). Whatever it is that is hurting you, time will help you heal and move past it. We would not know, nor understand beauty without hardship. That is life. Please know you're not alone... we all celebrate, and mourn our way through this gift of life. Please don't give up. There's always another beautiful experience waiting for you just out of sight, around the bend.
when I was 16 I discovered Joni's BLUE album...then all the others...would sit in my room ...alone and read the lyrics on album....played the vinyl all the time....my mother...a therapist would tell my father "she must be depressed"...lol...no, I was 16, 17 and 18 and recognized a true poet ....you will get through this trying time...i promise you honey....you are at a crossroads...you will figure out life. do what you want...not what others tell you to do...
This is a hymn. One for the ages. A truly extraordinary expression of the human spirit. Joni is a goddess and Brandi is an archangel in reminding us of how beautiful and important this is. Wow. Amidst all the other things going on... this gives me hope, and inspiration.
The first time I watched this, me and my girl were uncontrollably in tears. The first few notes moved us to a certain calmness that only Joni could bring. Kudos to you Ms. Mitchell. May you live longer and share your music with the next generation.
Paul Simon performed at this festival. When everyone thought that they just witnessed something special, that feeling was short lived until Joni came on. She sang this song with so much hope, but the way she sings it now adds another chapter to the meaning of Both Sides, Now. This is her swan song and may be the best performance. She is certainly conveying the pain and hopefulness that she experienced throughout her life. I’m lucky enough to be alive with this legend
In her Autumn years, she took a perfect song she made iconic and transformed it into something absolutely magical. Only Joni Mitchell could pull that off! A beautiful moment in music history, captured for all time on RUclips.
Same! About 3 or 4 notes in! Something ancient, wise and strong came through in the timbre of her voice that was unmistakable and EVERYONE knew it as soon as she began! A little bit of magic I'd say.
Best part has got to be the end when Joni starts giggling. Giggles of pure joy performing on stage again, despite being nearly 80 years old, knowing that she’s still got that legendary presence in her voice and of course knowing she’s still able to take everyone’s breath away with what’s possibly one of the best songs of all time. And you can tell she’s happy, like the kind of happiness a grandparent feels watching their grandkids run and play - just oh so happy. And that makes me so darn happy too
Do you know before she started considering music, Joni was very interested in painting (she ran a parallel career as a visual artist), and a dozen of her 19 studio albums feature paintings by Mitchell, most of which are self-portraits.. Isn't that amazing of her? Truly, she's Gifted.

Your post made the amazing story even more
amazing, John - thank you.

I used to sing and play this song on the guitar that I taught myself how to play when I was about 14 or 15. Hearing this was so beautiful I almost cried.

Thank you, Brandi: this is what honoring elders looks like.
YES 🥰
Brandi is truly incredible for loving Joni.
Who are the two ladies dressed alike? Mother and daughter?
Elder or not, she owned that stage.
Not really. Honoring would have been not trying to hog the spotlight. But all night Carlisle upstaged Joni with her self-absorbed, childish antics. I was screaming at the screen "IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU! SIT STILL OR GET IFF THE STAGE!"
I think these are pure emotions. It is honoring. I think they agreed they will sing together.

So did I! :)

What a beautiful sentiment and I so agree. I just found this version today think think it must be the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

A true poet ❤🖋️
If that song didn't move you to tears, you're not human...."at all". What a performance, what a living legend! 😊
It is not her song, judt collins sang it first. She copied her.
Nope, it was written by Joni. Judy Collins does a great cover (which was much better known) but Joni's versions are transcendant..
I could care less who wrote it. The woman who sang this version is my hero and a legend in her time. She's in her golden years now let's enjoy it with her.
So stunning I have no words…Joni is one of the greatest artists of our era and still is…God bless Joni
I'm astounded by the superb quality of her voice and her flawless phrasing.
Great points, it's amazing how phrasing can add so much more emotion to a song. Joni you are a true treasure.
She has always been a superb phrasemaster
Me too just the best phrasing music has helped her get well

Agree extraordinary how she does this; spirit moving
This performance really drives home the truth about something being lost and gained every day. Age slows us all down, but it also bring wisdom and joy. Joni, I think you do know life.
I am 68 years old and have adored Joni since I was a teenager. And I have long considered her to be the single greatest artist of my lifetime. And this performance has moved me in a way I can’t even describe. She wrote the soundtrack to my life. My beloved husband died recently, and now Joni has sung the anthem to surviving all that life throws at you, and being able to gain more than you lost. I will play this every night to help me look forward to the next day.
strength and courage dear heart
@@dcaposey Thank you so much. Joni is a testament to strength and courage; losing everything to a brain aneurysm, and gaining a depth to her talent and connection to her fans that she might not have attained otherwise.

I'm 66 and feel the same. When living in my first apartment my friends and i would gather around and sing "Joni" (or try to) as loud as we could. She sang the soundtrack of our lives.
@@judydenmark5690 Joni watched RUclips videos of herself to watch her hands on the guitar and to learn her songs again after her brain aneurysm.
One of my favorite aspects of this is how Brandi Carlile handled it. She was ready to step in and support or fill in for Joni if she faltered, but as Joni carried it on her own, Brandi stepped back and let her shine.
God, what a devastating performance. You can feel it so deeply. Her voice is beautiful in a different way at every age.
The reaction of Brandi overall is huge and wonderful too
Let’s see you hit the high notes when you’re 80 years old
She sounds almost like Nina Simone at times
I thought Joni Mitchell's story had ended. I was apparently wrong. That's the most feeling I've ever heard in a folk performance. Amazing.
This comment hits hard❤
It feels good to be wrong on this occasion. Perhaps the biggest comeback of the year.
Even if her music had ended, her story wouldn't have ended! I'm so glad to see her singing again though!
Yes, incredible. I have chills watching1
Me too! I was not expecting to be blown away! This is hauntingly beautiful!
It would have been so much better if Brandi wasn't there; she was very distracting!
@@capt.k6554 literally does not happen without her, Joni is only there performing for the first time in 20+ years because she trusts Brandi to guide her. You can feel whatever you want about Brandi’s contributions but she’s clearly chiming in when she senses Joni struggling with a lyric.
Yes that’s the most touching thing to me, she seems like she is cueing her gently then fades into the background.
Brandi Carlile never left middle school. She's a self-promoting hack.
Joni Mitchell,,, a wonderful voice..forever
It's always been a great song but it was as if it was meant to be sung on this day in this place. As if as a young woman she wrote this song for her older self to sing. Amazing, and her joyful laughter at the end was precious.

Same here, teardrops here in England. Best wishes.

Brandi is really annoying and constantly drawing attention to herself in my opinion.
She performs this song in her age like it's meant to be sung; a song ripened to perfection. Unbelievable. In my opinion, the most beautifully written song ever.

It could have been better if Brandi had shut her dumb cringe mouth. Not sure “tell em Joni” made anything better you low brow glad handing nudnik

Still poetic
12/30/22 @ 10:30 AM:
I first experienced this song as a young boy in the sixties.
Life, lived. Every day. Aroha. Love from New Zealand.
She may be 78 years old but she did a beautiful job. I don’t care what anybody says she still knows how to sing

The reverence from the other musicians onstage with her is breathtaking.
