I am at the end of my life, 68 years old and in hospice...dying with leukemia. I remember owning my first JONI MITCHELL album with clouds and Michael from mountains, Nathan la frenier, etc.... it changed my life and initiated my music career. I have lived lifetimes since then and changed careers several times. Now, resting on my couch, I listen to this old concert and remember how I felt when I was 13 years old and just hearing these songs for the very first time. at the time she was the older wiser woman whom I wanted to emulate.... now, watching this, she is dewy youth and I the rusk, ready to blow away on the wind with a song in my heart ❤
I was 17 years old with a baby and I discovered Joni and for the next 10 years I was entertained living in Gary Indiana.. she literally saved my life. I now live in California and I’m learning to play Joni songs on my guitar and I’m 76 years old.

I'm an old geezer who was a grownup when this show was made. Back in those days, Joni held her audience spellbound with just a guitar, a piano and her wonderfully imperfect voice. No sexy outfit, no dancing, no big production, no plastecine music. Just pure, sincere artistic expression in timeless songs that still resonate with those who appreciate them. With the passing of Gordon Lightfoot, she's among the last survivors from a generation of great balladeers.

Her guitar playing is underappreciated. Sure, she doesn't wail screaming blues guitar riffs. However, what she does is so complex and melodic, playing rhythm and melody at the same time with a sound that can only be Joni Mitchell. And the tone of that Martin guitar is excellent. Whenever I tell people that I think Joni Mitchell is one of the best guitar players of all time, I get a lot of heads shaking and comments like, "Well, you've never heard X or Y or Z"... all of whom are blues/rock lead guitarists. They are all excellent and can all play in each other's style. But none of them can play like Joni Mitchell.

Add Brian Wilson as an artist that stands shoulder to shoulder with Joni Mitchell as a writer, player, singer, and arranger. Wilson personally challenged the Beatles for pop supremacy at the height of Beatlemania. He won a measure of success at that when "I Get Around" went to No. 1. Beach Boys released four studio LPs in 1964 thereby exemplifying American work ethic and competitive spirit.
We all owe Brandi Carlile a huge hug of gratitude, for convincing Joni that we all were missing her terribly, and for bringing her back. Beautiful, sensitive, intelligent, sharply witty, wry and poetical -- how can one lady have so much creative talent? No one else can hold a candle to her.
Let’s be clear this lady is certainly one of if not the very finest songsmith ever to walk this planet! Over the years there have been many good/great performers but you will have to dig very deep to find another who is this naturally accomplished. The apparent ease with which she weaves complex melodies and lyrics is just breathtaking and yet so easy to listen to……and have you seen her painting?
Joanna Newsom is a master at it. Check her out. For simpler lyrics go with "It Does Not Suffice"... If you can dig super deep lyrics go with "Sawdust and Diamonds" or "Only Skin"... "Emily" is great too. Her two best albums, in my opinion, are Have One On Me & Ys. They're quite different.
Joni Mitchell stands among giants including Brian Wilson, Gladys Knight, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder. It is an embarrassment of riches. Kudos to her manager and label president David Geffen who essentially popularized California country rock.
Joni wrote the song book of my life when I was just a young mom, 54 years ago. Her talent bloomed and blossomed over the years as a musician, song writer, performer and an artist. While there may be only too human limits on life, every time I think about the song "Clouds", my dreams remain intact. So heart-breaking to see her go 'thru all of his suffering, but it is inspiring, and heart-warming to watch how she was able to get back up on her feet and perform again. All the more precious when thinking of family/friends who were never able to conquer their limitations. Echoing others, I, too, feel very privileged to have lived 'thru that time period, which seems to be so long ago!
Was born in the-early fifties - grew upon the SF Bay Area - musician since I was four - of all times and places to grow up - magic. Joni was one of many treasures of that time. Looking back always brings a tear of joy and a feeling of being most fortunate. Most of these musical diamonds were forgotten until the internet and RUclips. Most Blessed :)
She is No great piano player , but she sure as hell drags you into a song and keeps you there. To a real piano player this is trivial, but I'm not listening to Joni to hear Willie the Lion Smith, Beach, or Vladimir Horowitz. But believe me, they would ALL love this woman's songs... they are timeless, different, simple, but timeless...
@@craigdylan3953 I’m a piano teacher for more than 20 years , many of my pupils are professional musicians now , and I must say that her piano playing skills are amazing for her style of music and she has a beautiful touch at the keys , just great
Wow, it’s so rare to see an artist perform an unfinished song such as “All I Want” was at that time. That takes courage, because the song at that time was such a rough draft, compared to the beautifully refined version that it became. I’m also impressed that the overall audio quality was that good, given that it was 50+ years ago. Kudos to BBC.
@@GaZonk100 I’ve seen discussions online that the BBC in that era used AKG C 28, 29, and 30 mics with extension tubes. But I’m sure that if you picked up one today on the vintage market, it would be falling apart!
Takes me back to a time when I could hit those notes too!! Purest Joni in the raw!! What a voice!! Childlike, yet rich with wisdom already! A true artist who paints with notes and words, and paints on canvas too! She once said, “ I paint my joy, and sing my sorrow.” Love you forever sweet Joni!! You wrote my life!! God bless!!!
Will we ever see such talent again? The beautiful Joni was a mere 26/27 years of age on this outing, the voice of an angel, and a catalogue of music that will never be repeated. She has never really been credited for her guitar playing, but my God, it is faultless. Thanks for posting.
Joni carried me back home when I was stationed in W. Germany in the early Seventies every time she sang “California”. Blue is a very special album that brings back so many memories.
This BBC concert is probably the best acoustic live concert you can see one girl one guitar and piano with incredible songs from the girl with the voice from the heavens joni mitchell talent as big as the sky. Young up and coming artists should watch this concert its as good as it gets when it comes to one of the greatest artists of our time.
She takes the listener to such cerebral heights... Wow, what a seriously talented & phenomenal human being. As important of a musician as there has ever been. Fortunately for us, she is alive and currently creating her incredible music.
Yes, agree 100%. Legend does not begin to describe her, she has had such a profound influence on other musicians and singers, especially young women. Joni is a national treasure.
I fell in love with her all over again watching this. I always wondered where the sadness came from in her songs, but I realize that so much of it came from her relationships. They all filled a bit of her but none could fill her soul enough to keep her from searching for more. Her songs touch me deeply, their joy, their sadness, their humor. My favorite artist.
I totally agree with you. Since about the mid 90’s when music lost it’s melodies I quit listening to popular music. I guess that’s what happens when you get old and I am fine with it now. So here’s to melodic music.
I have always admired this lady. So in 1976 when as a workman on a ranch in Colorado, I walked in on her sitting at the piano just playing around she smile at me and stopped!! I apologized and she said "its ok I was just leaving." I never forgot the sound or her face.
@@lacecitygirl ehhhm to be fair, she might have an edge and a half on the "singer" part of singer/songwriter, but yes, Dylan deserves awards up the wazoo for his contributions!!
I was there (yes for real) and there's no note of this song that doesn't connect with me in relation with how it felt to be part of that event. I first saw her in '68 and have been madly in love ever since. Along with my family, Joni's voice will be in the chorus at the end of my life.
@@homegown1234 Yep. I found out she wasn't going to be there and decided I wasn't going, either! The fact that I was 16, had no car and lived in Oregon may have a little to do with my decision...
Stunning. She is childlike. But this child is a prodigy. When she describes writing 'Woodstock', you might expect a childish smush of shapeless form but its a Mona Lisa to be hung in the Louvre for generations to come.
There has always been such light in her music and art. A wondrous body of work. So many of us grew up entranced by that soaring voice. She helped me stay in touch with how beautiful life can be for 50 years now. Thanks for being so true to yourself Joni Mitchell.
Joni is known for her songs and lyrics, but what an accomplished musician and artist. She has shared her genius and the true meaning and value of her music and art with all of us. It is us who are blessed through her talent, grace and authenticity beyond music into heart.
Brandi Carlile is a big part of Joni's life at present. We can thank her for injecting apparent joy and happiness into Joni's life after catastrophic health issues. Good for her.
One of the greatest artists ever. She often says "I wrote a little song about it" (Woodstock), but actually she created so many masterpieces and made that look and sound so easy.
Her voice...such clarity and range. Her phrasing...perfect and intriguing, with such ease in the rise and falls of the notes. She's a wonderful singer and songwriter. This is my first time seeing the video...and I'm so glad that I did!
I'm amazed this was saved in the archives... your words are so well written... I've followed her music since the 60 and grew, knowing she is from Canada. My family is from there ... may her music be shared among man & women kind ... he music resonates toward the world 🌎 ♥️ as she's her honistly with every poem every Melody
After her first line of lyrics during Big Yellow Taxi; the way she knew to wait an extra bar and a half to let the audience appreciation tone down before continuing; total pro!
God, I love Joni so much and have ever since I was a little toddler (born in 1970) and I grew up with "ladies of the canyon" and " court and spark" being a huge part of my life thanks to my mom playing them both what probably wasn't, but seems like daily. I knew every nuance of those songs probably by the time I was 6 years old. And of course, since then I've gone on to discover so much more about this incredible musician/ songwriters work. I have also been a musician and songwriter for the last 41 years although many leagues below Joni, one thing I wish is that she got more credit as a musician, even in the early days her sense of improvisation with her vocal melodies during her performances alone proves her genius with melody and it's hugely enjoyable and inspirational. Thanks for uploading this beautiful video.
Yes, her musicianship is impeccable. She's totally an inspiration to guitarists with her inventive tunings. And ... she's even better on piano! As a musician, she's a folkier version of Prince, who was obviously a fan - he covered "Case of You". And the lyrics. There's a reason why guys (such as Prince, CSNY and Adam Duritz) like to sing Joni songs. They have an honest directness to them that doesn't offend our fragile (?) sense of masculinity.
What a loving experience to be with you like this and return to our collective past with our hearts open;------------------ willing and filling with reverie of those wonderful times and these beautiful songs that gave us love and comradery in those bright and changing/enlightening times... Yes! A generation of insight and a path of love in the wilderness. Truth and Love...!!!
I’ve loved her since Song to a Seagull (1968), and nothing has changed since then. She unquestionably ranks among the greatest songwriters: the Gershwins, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Rogers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim-you get the idea.
I'm amazed at the absolute joy beaming from Joni while playing California. Her expression of confidence and being at ease with the material is marvelous to witness. Listening to Archives 1, she is often nervous revealing her songs. There was none of that here. Many thanks to the BBC for their care in recording, whoever created the HD version and Le mélomane for sharing.
I'm 71 yes, an American friend sent us the album when it came out. And I've sung it ever since. I love hearing you sing and especially talk, such a young voice, and you were so kind, maybe even a little bit shy, fragile, that's why they're beautiful songs. And you accompany yourself so well, beautifully done on that piano, something I've never managed to do.
i had the rare privilege of meeting Henry Lewy , he was the sound engineer for joni mitchell's early music . he gave me a recording of an interview with her . she is as interesting a speaker as she is a musician.
There are so many ways that Joni is talented: her music, her poetic lyrics, her voice, her musicianship, and even as a painter. She really had a string of amazing albums one after the other beginning in the late '60s.
Heard the song Chelsea morning maybe 100 times. I never knew what it was about. I just listen to it as I read the lyrics. She is an unreal lyricist! Simply gorgeous!

Echoing others, I, too, feel very privileged to have lived 'thru that time period, which seems to be so long ago!
I'm "hippie-breed", so I don't even recall a World without Joni in it.
My first girlfriend, the Love of my Life, agreed...
How many of that audience felt as lucky and privileged as they were to be there that magical night?
How much talent can one single person have ?
Unbelievable
Joni Mitchell forever💛🧡❤
She'd been at it for a few years. She would go on for another 4+ decades, yet here we hear her fully formed and supremely confident.
Yes, it's not fair! She's a good artist as well, and very beautiful. And now she's lived to a good old age.
Is for that exact reason that I try (in my mind) to stick some hardness and selfishness to her image to keep her human. (But I’m a fool I know).
Scientology? That’s really scraping (finally) the perfect image I have of J.M.
I never realized how fantastic Joni is on the piano. She's just a magical all-around talent.
If she were a baseball player , she'd be a five tool talent !
@@craigdylan3953You’re trippin this is great piano playing
@@craigdylan3953 I’m a piano teacher for more than 20 years , many of my pupils are professional musicians now , and I must say that her piano playing skills are amazing for her style of music and she has a beautiful touch at the keys , just great
Absolutely stunning, watching a up and coming superstar! Been a joy and a heart lifter for many a year for me, many thanks Joni.
More than 50 years later her songs still bring tears to my eyes, due to their sheer stunning beauty.
Joni is like a breath of fresh air.- fresh, fragrant, full of life and light and cheer. Indescriible really-- so inspirational !
This is 53 years ago.
Kudos to BBC.
agree - and I want to know what brand that mic is
@@GaZonk100 I’ve seen discussions online that the BBC in that era used AKG C 28, 29, and 30 mics with extension tubes. But I’m sure that if you picked up one today on the vintage market, it would be falling apart!
It helps that it is a full analog performance!
❤❤❤
KUDOS TO BBC. I love that comment, public radio and TV are a vital way of keeping the arts alive.
Takes me back to a time when I could hit those notes too!! Purest Joni in the raw!! What a voice!! Childlike, yet rich with wisdom already! A true artist who paints with notes and words, and paints on canvas too! She once said, “ I paint my joy, and sing my sorrow.”
Love you forever sweet Joni!! You wrote my life!!
God bless!!!
She was the soundtrack of my youth, I couldn't have done it without her... I thank you Joni for adding richness and meaning to my life
whoever posted this, thank you so very.very much.
This is my assembly and sound mixing work ;)
This performance is on another level, completely. Smooth and soulful, elegant and effortless, intelligent and heartwarming. Just wonderful.
A magnificent performance! Just stirs my heart and soul. Takes me back when life was pure, innocent and happy as compared to day.
Will we ever see such talent again? The beautiful Joni was a mere 26/27 years of age on this outing, the voice of an angel, and a catalogue of music that will never be repeated. She has never really been credited for her guitar playing, but my God, it is faultless. Thanks for posting.
Always loved her. Brought tears to my eyes seeing this - a scarcely believable talent, and surely one of the greatest singer/songwriters ever.
Brought tears to mine also..
A time we once lived in and is gone..
It was so beautiful as she was
Joni carried me back home when I was stationed in W. Germany in the early Seventies every time she sang “California”. Blue is a very special album that brings back so many memories.
Were you pissed?
Brilliant.
Greatest singer/ songwriter ever?
WNODERFUL! What a BLESSING we have In JONI MITCHELL!! Such AMAZING Songs off the CUFF!!! BRILLIANT!!!!💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
No other artist brings tranquility , emotions , and peace simultaneously 💕🥰
Joni for the Nobel-prize.
Greatest singer-songwriter ever.
More so than Dylan though he deserved his.
@@lacecitygirl ehhhm to be fair, she might have an edge and a half on the "singer" part of singer/songwriter, but yes, Dylan deserves awards up the wazoo for his contributions!!
The only boomer who ever admitted to not being at Woodstock. And she wrote the damn song.
Lmao
Interesting to learn of not attending Woodstock- which is fine since I wasn't there either.
Very well said indeed.
One of the greatest songwriters of all time.
Joni and Joan Baez have the most unique voices. Able to hit notes impossible for most singers. True talent indeed.
The Diamonds and Rust album by Joan Baez features Joni Mitchell on the track Dida very short almost no lyrics but stunning
Voices that didn’t need odious ‘auto tune’.
Joni's rendition of Woodstock is Absolutely Fabulous ♥️ always will be my favourite 🌺
There has always been such light in her music and art. A wondrous body of work. So many of us grew up entranced by that soaring voice. She helped me stay in touch with how beautiful life can be for 50 years now. Thanks for being so true to yourself Joni Mitchell.
Her talent can't be overestimated. One of the true guiding lights in music.
Joni is known for her songs and lyrics, but what an accomplished musician and artist. She has shared her genius and the true meaning and value of her music and art with all of us. It is us who are blessed through her talent, grace and authenticity beyond music into heart.
Love you brother..I have a fatal type of dementia..thankfully it is quick..Joni is playing in my home daily...Peace
1970...I was 10 but I do remember her !! Unbelievable....Brandi Carlile is following in Joni's footsteps!!
She looks so rad and sounds so gorgeous in this vid. Great perfromance.
Words are so inadequate where Joni is concerned. Tears in awe of timeless beauty suffice
Picks a mean guitar as well!
So much talent she can entertain an audience completely solo. An amazing musician that we were all blessed to grow up hearing all the time.
Not many can do it for sure!
Such a rare artistic talent on so many levels: musical, painting, poetry. Although she would deny it, she was a quintessential hippie, in her time.
THANKS JONI🌟♥️ & THANKS, BBC🌟❗️❣️, for capturing one of the great 🌟song-poets & performances of all time!🤚✌️🌼🌹🌎🌲🕊️💛🌟✨
She will sing a generation of us In To The Light. Merci Joni. ❤️
She is the only singer who can make me cry.
She had the voice with the clarity of a bell, the power of a trumpet and the beauty of an angel.
Joni Mitchell, the sirene of the Sixties.
Such a sweet voice, she is my all time favorite vocalist.
After her first line of lyrics during Big Yellow Taxi; the way she knew to wait an extra bar and a half to let the audience appreciation tone down before continuing; total pro!
I adore that woman. That's all, everything else has been said. How beautiful.
Triple threat! Writer, vocalist, and musical genius. An extraordinary soul. Love you Joni. Can not wait to see you soon.
I a m now 73year old fan.of joni M
Like all her songs.
Beautifully put. This is just a fantastic performance
@@aquamarine99911hmmm gotta check out that Prince cover
@@aquamarine99911singer/songwriter extraordinaire!!!
First time listening Joni Mitchell…I am amazed!
What an incredibly imaginative poet, singer, and performer. There's never been anyone else like Joni.
Joni is the most creative songwriter with her lyrics. Heavenly voice too! Love her so much!
no auto tune, no tech of any kind just pure talent.
What an amazing document. It’s hard to put my admiration for her into words.
If there could only be ten musical geniuses in a hall of fame, she would be in there.
@@raycarter4030I’d go Top 5 songwriters of the last century!
First time I heard 'Help Me' I was in love. Still am. Special lady. ❤
She really had a string of amazing albums one after the other beginning in the late '60s.
just absolutely wonderful in every respect .... love Joni. !!
Can’t hear her sing without wanting to cry. Stunning talent.
get some meds you halfwit. or some hookers or blow. pathetic.
Heard the song Chelsea morning maybe 100 times. I never knew what it was about. I just listen to it as I read the lyrics. She is an unreal lyricist! Simply gorgeous!
I very much agree her lyrical gift is immeasurable. There are verses of hers that have mesmerized me for 50 years. Literally brought me to my knees .
Joni, your music is pure, living beauty. You are a gift to this world and its people.
48 in Shanghai, I fell in love with her one year ago. Woodstock was the 1st song I heard. Amazing artist, poet and angel voice
Joni has the innocence of a child. She truly enjoys music and having fun creating it.
What a treasure she is.
