All Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell - Lifetime Award Concert TNT (4-16-2000)

- In fitting tribute to Joni Mitchell, the TNT network presented an all-star celebration at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, April 6, 2000. Many legendary performers sang Mitchell's songs, including James Taylor, Elton John, Wynonna Judd, Bryan Adams, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Krall, and Richard Thompson of Fairport Convention fame. Emcee was Ashley Judd. Mitchell herself ended the evening with a rendition of "Both Sides Now" with a full 70 piece orchestra. I’m probably in the minority of listeners here, but as a composer-jazz pianist, I loved “A Case Of You” performed by Diana Krall. She sang the song with deep respect and abundant soul!
I don't think you're in a minority and if you are then it's a very privileged one to say the least. As far as I can tell, this was performed with voice and piano only which, in and of itself, is a major leap into transparency and magnification. Diana is the very epitome of artistry.
What a provocative name for a song
Of all the supremely gifted songwriters who came out of Laurel Canyon, Joni stands head and shoulders above them all
❤❤❤
Of all the songwriters that came out of Canada, Joni stands head and shoulders above them all
Cindy's interpretation is just fucking sublime.
It's sad that most only see her as the girl who wants to have fun,
Whoa Cyndi Lauper --- you killed this!!!! AMAZING!!!!
The negative comments here leave me perplexed and a bit saddened. Were the performances perfect? Of course not. Would others artists have done a better job of interpreting Joni's songs? Perhaps. But every person on that stage was there for the sole purpose of paying tribute to one of their musical heroes and displayed for all to see (and mindlessly criticize) what her songs meant to them through these amazing performances. Oh, and for the record, each and every performer in this video has more musical talent in their left pinky toenail than the haters here will ever have, no matter how many tortured lifetimes you may live. Listen to what you like, don't listen to what you don't, simple as that. Peace.
Hear here, bud.
"Couldn't have put it better myself..Well Said my friend..!!
I agree.
Exactly my friend. If you don't like it don't listen. I love this tribute to Joni and more importantly she seemed to appreciate it herself. If you don't like it listen to something else. Don't criticise what you don't understand.
You're so right xxx
Cyndi Lauper ..you blow me away to stars shining liking diamonds and glittering in my ears ...Joni must have loved it !
I love how Joni shakes her little shoulders when she's in the groove. At 78 she still does it.
❤❤❤
She was in her 50s during this show-
Joni sings "Both Sides Now" at the end of the evening and it sounds like a song a wise old person would have written. Then we remember that she wrote that song in 1967, when she was only 23 years old. Some people have a gift and live their lives accordingly.
And this was a hit again. Just when you think she's an old person sitting on her extensive laurels she walks on and just blows everybody away, just like anytime she's on a stage. I'm new to most of her music but can't wait to go through her back catalogue. This is beyond anything. "It's life's allusions I recall I really don't know life at all". How the hell does a 23 year old write that ffs
what a fantastic tribute.......love you Joni Mitchell
She's been here before.
@@nspector u think? Could be
@@sammyscotch9945 Yes, I do think so. Do you?
CINDY!! I was hypnotized.
At a press conference following the release of her photobook "Sex," wherein Madonna literally revealed herself, a reporter asked her "So what's next? Some internal organs, maybe?" That moment exposed (if you'll pardon the pun) how music had fallen victim to what Joni called the star-maker machinery behind the popular song. Joni, unlike Madonna, revealed her insides - in particular, to put it crudely, her guts - through an astonishing poetic arrangement of words and similes and metaphors that gave a more tangible form to what was aching in our own guts, accompanied by a soulful twang of her guitar or the sound of her fingernails clicking on a keyboard - and of course, that voice - that remains wholly unmatched and probably will forever. To have been alive during the time of Joni Mitchell, Meryl Streep and Luciano Pavarotti - what a freakin' blessing that's been. Listening to her now, especially now, I remind myself of that. It helps - along with the two gin soaked olives at the bottom of my martini glass.
Talented artists paying tribute to the most talented artist on the planet.

@@alanconrad8490 Best of the lot!
Diana Krall blew them all away. What a great rendition of one of Joni's best songs.
Totally agree! That was the pure definition of perfection….
Not even close. Just a "jazzier" version of Joni's, and couldn't hold a candle to it. that honor goes to, shockingly, Cindy Lauper. Her rendition was pure artistry and was a "take," not a pale imitation. Shocking how good it was. Cindy Lauper, of all people. Haunting
I NEVER get tired of Cyndi's version of "Carey". It's inspired. I've watched it endlessly.
Really? Not for me. I like it faster.

Cyndi Lauper blows my mind , what a great version of Carey , , she is unreal , what a look , outa space

Joni performing Both Sides Now at this stage in her life was truly sagacious!❤
Imagine having written 2 songs, the last 2 played - Both Sides Now and Circle Game - written at a young age and now are like a coda to her career decades later. And imagine this show was in 2000, and now in 2022 there was just a similar tribute show with Joni, at Newport. I hope you've all seen that too.
That's quite a performance from Cyndi Lauper on Cary. One of Joni's great songs with the crazy guitar tuning of C# C# C# C# G# C#.

It’s 2023 and it’s the first time I’ve seen this Tribute to Joni Mitchell, I’m not looking at comments because it does not matter to me personally what others think of the artists that are there but to Honour the Awesomeness of what Is Joni. I’m Canadian and Joni is our Pride & Joy and I’ve been listening to Joni’s Art since the late 1960’s and followed her career all these year to now her beautiful art pieces she paints so wonderfully. Old School People like we have not passed through this life on a whim, we’ve ate Kraft dinner, wore our mood rings with pride, played around, fooled around and f#@ked a lot up ta boot but we loved like there was no tomorrow, we looked out for those we loved, Stomped with Tommy and Hunter, we knew what family meant, and smoked and smoked, and laughed our heads off in the circled card games on a Saturday night whist good hockey played in the black and white. You may call Joni a “ Staple “ in the Halls Of Artist “ but we know her as a “ Downhomer “ that made good yet paid her dues In Full. All these artist did well in a Fan’s book of Joni, don’t judge them, they did well. We luv you Joni, you give the world so much, your a Legend in Your Own Right yes, but we here at home speak of you aslike kin. Well done good girl, we love you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦 * Ten Mickey Mouses for your Carey ❤️
Great tribute....but there is NO talent like Joni.....her range...the composition...ONE OF A KIND!
Still true
Diana Krall's piano arrangement was so thoughtful. The most gifted and accomplished musican playing that evening, Cassandra Wilson the most gifted of singers, Elton picked the song most like his own work and style. Cyndi performed the best cover. Of course Joni's work is her own best commentary and tribute.
There wasn't a single weak link in this marvellous concert.
Since the Kennedy Center won't honor Joni, I'm glad at least TNT showed her the respect she deserves.
Why is that is it speculated?

An hour and half cannot begin to show the depth of Joni Mitchell's immense talent. I have loved this woman for 40+ years - she is the music of my life!
Nice to see a couple of Canadians paying tribute to a legendary Canadian.
Love the love and music. Quite the challenge to sing Joni! Well done all🎼🎹❤
k.d. lang's performance was awe inspiring! Such a great singer, up to the difficulty of Joni's melodies.
KD Lang is another extraordinary Canadian talent.
I discovered her WAY late!!! Never too late, though!!!!
Joni perhaps more than any other artist has been the one "holding my hand" through all the stages of my life. I am only a little younger than she is, so this was incredibly poignant and moving to me. I am overjoyed to see her receive all this adulation -- it was a long time coming, and she was neglected and disrespected for years, so this is wonderful. There is truly no one like her. And though she is definitely a great musician of the 20th century, and not a "woman musician," there is some special connection that she makes for women, some experience that she just "gets" and expresses for us. I can describe all the different stages of my life by quoting JM songs. And she's always pushing the boundaries, changing and challenging herself, and giving us something new.
And wow, to hear her sing "Both Sides Now," just amazing, so full of feeling. In a way this was like watching a trip through my own life -- but mainly I am just glad to see her finally getting the tribute that she so deserves. Wonderful.
Yep, well said!
Thanks for your kind and colorful words. So nice that you have her in your life. Me too I do feel connected to her music and the late 60s and early 70s. Some of her songs do make me cry/ getting sentimental and never thought I would get their. One of the most ladies who influenced that time. Take care and keep on singing/ Aloha from east Maui.
Susan Noel she is sweet
I am a biological, cultural, and preferential male, with a strong anima. Joni Mitchell is close to my age, and has been there, lyrics and moods and explorations, inhabiting the music that plays, ceaselessly, in my head since I first heard her, what?, 50+ years ago. Her gift transcends identity and reaches into the very soul of those who will open their ears and minds and hearts to her songs. She is one the greats and I feel privileged to have witnessed her career so far.
@@thinwolf4516 Agree! I am a gay guy from Argentina who´s not even in his 40´s yet and Joni Mitchell has been a huge part of my life since I was 13. I connected with her lyrics and her spirit in such a way that I felt seen, and spoken FOR and TO for the first time ever. She´s been like a best friend, a therapist, an adviser, a musical hero. I can totally understand Joni representing something really important to women in particular, but for me she is one of the few artist that truly shaped generations regardless of genders, nationalities, ages, you name it.
Thank you Gods of RUclips algorithms for bring this to me.
Both sides now is such a powerful song and so true. Both the melody and lyrics are equally as mesmerizing and amazing. Honestly, I think this is probably the greatest song ever written.
It's certainly there amongst them, at the very least.
Very wise lyrics. Joni Mitchell was 23 when she wrote these world-weary lyrics!

She was impressive. A fine rendition.

@@forreal245 get my seminal fluid out of your ears
@@forreal245 right before I read your host I wrote something of similar nature I just thought that rendition was horrible it just took a song that I thought was pretty damn good and put it down into the basement. And I'm getting you bet dollars to Donuts the Joany did not like the two neither I don't know how we could find that out but I'm going to look for her reaction at the end of the song.
When i was much younger, 14 or 15 or so, battling depression and confusion about life and my life and who I was and how i felt (and wanting to put an end to it all), Joni gave me words and validation that I wasn't alone. She gave me a door to walk through to a field of art and beauty and permission to feel the highs and lows, the heat and cold, the bitter and sweet and be fine in the restlessness of it all.
I listened half way through this and found tears were running down my cheek. On reflection I recall Joni has been with me thru so much heart break and happiness in more than 50 years. Funny how this stuff comes to the surface because of music!
Right there with you, friend. But in her case...Its a case of Joni, I guess would be enough to convey.
You said what I was thanking. So thank you.
Don Katlin My pleasure. I just turned 49, am a raised on Drive In Movies (19, 18 year old parents that had me, in 1965, same year Mitchell's daughter was born, out of wedlock, surprise, both cases), and so went everywhere with those poor youngsters, i.e. remember A LOT of the sixties stuff, early 70's stuff.
That said, despite my roots as to that music, all I really knew of Joni was her radio songs, one CD (not vinyl, and HITS, at that), and instinctively that she was one of the best ever.
This past Easter, my instincts (mid life crisis) led me like a moth to her flame, and all her fellow freedom freak, discovery/adventuring spirit songs and interviews, I just went IN DEPTH on for the first time ever.
I have been listening every day or night or both since that night (CBC interview, Joni at 70 years old started it out). She was SUCH a WONDERFUL surprise, once I dived in deep, blowing all my already suspected notions of her SKY HIGH.
I love a truth teller...most do not. I love Muhammad Ali, George Carlin...masters, the best at their professions, unafraid to lay it all on the line, speak truth to power, fight for or say to folks THIS is what is going on.
Joni has made tears of appreciation and etc fall multiple times since that night. I write songs myself, and while I have never been published, I can certainly appreciate the whole other level this woman is on.
To me, still not having heard ALL her albums on youtube yet, I think she is THE BEST SINGER SONGWRITER EVER, period. Without doubt in Dylan's league as to literary writing, but on a higher plane as to voice and musicianship, without doubt, as well.
I just LOVE this woman. No other artist has made me react so, like you speak to, so often, so many different songs, on first or repeat listens.
Cannot tell you how WONDERFUL it is to discover all this, at my age and all. To me, she just joined Ali and Carlin on my own little Mount Rushmore, the Truth, Integrity, Honesty, Balls and Beauty department.
PEACE, friend.
Don Katlin James Taylor said it best here, on this tribute, if I am right? Before playing River, he looked up to her in the balcony:
"Joni the bone...on her Throne...where she belong".
rjlionheart, now thats strang as I don't recall ever chasing a Joni bass line. On reflection I sing along and the words and melody just do it for me. I'm building a short scall bass. Maybe when I finished I'll play some joni bass lines but oh where would I starte ? :-)
No one will ever be a greater female singer, songwriter and influence on popular culture than Joni Mitchell!
This show demonstrates that no one can sing Joni except Joni. She knew this and yet was always humble about it all.
Right. Richard Thompson = total amateur 🙄
Everybody else just move on over, Joni the master is coming through...
Entirely in a class by herself, she stands above all in a generation of immensely talented singer/songwriters. If the term "artistic genius" can be applied to any of them, it is she.
Amen
Yes, amen.
I don't know why but I can never get enough of Joni Mitchell's music. So many great songs written, so many great performances by Joni Mitchell, so many great covers by so many great musicians, it just goes on and on.
Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro, for me, are two incredible singer/songwriter in modern music. In this tribute concert there are some great versions of Joni's songs but when she sings in the end "Both sides now" she is really totally amazing! It's so profound song and her singing really touch my heart every time and also now! It's a masterpiece!
Wow, thanks for mentioning Laura Nyro. Gone way too soon.
@@pokey5736 - Thanks to you too. Yes, Laura gone too soon..she was so amazing.
Bravo to all of them! Cyndi Lauper was soulful and Woodstock Version also totally soulful! Joni was smiling and loved it! Bravo!
Someone may have already have mentioned this but as wonderful as this celebration of her work maybe it is hard to believe how a tribute to Joni Mitchell can omit contributions from Crosby Stills and Nash, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.
So so good.... hard to believe that 20 years have passed since this. Both Sides Now, after all else here, is sublime. Surely it will be regarded as one of the greatest musical performances ever recorded. As always, Joni inscribes herself in a present which resonates with the past we can all share with her.
Watching this touching tribute today on Joni's birthday, I realize every artist is able to perform Joni in their own way. Doesn't that just say everything about Joni's talent that she speaks to us all? Happy Birthday, Joni, and many blessings to you.
My Joni experience runs from 1973 brilliant girl friend turning me onto the album “Blue”. I’d played in rock bands since 8th grade (1966) but this was special. I also saw her live on the “Shadows and Light tour with Jaco, Pat Methany, etc. one of the best concerts ever. I found tears running down my cheeks even before “Amelia”. Genius, thank God for Joni.
Yes indeed. The Shadows and Light tour was great ! Joni is a gift from my God.
If I was there, when she hit that second chorus of Both Sides Now, and the orchestra flourishing behind her... I would be bawling.
At that point I probably wouldn't be able to see nothing as I'd be drawning in my tears...
Cyndi Lauper was absolutely incredible!
Maybe she could sing this at the Kennedy Centre Award for Joni
Such an incredible interpretation of the song. Cyndi delivered again.
I heard this soon after this tribute and before you could just do a two second search on RUclips and listen to it over and over. Ended up having the 12 year old son of a friend find it for me , buried deep in the interwebs. Was and remains among the best interpretations of an epic piece of pop music ever. I had the sense that Cyndi’s effort was Joni’s favorite. Or maybe Richard Thompson’s. Or..?
Cyndi killed it!!! Can't hear it enuff.🎶👍💖
Wonder if it’s true that Cindy was sick with the flu.
I have loved Joni for many many years. Profoundly insightful with her lyric capacity she has managed to pinpoint the human condition like a laser aimed straight into the very core of your heart and soul. Musically, Joni's capacity to re-invent herself over the years is beyond amazing. Her visual art has known no boundaries as has her music. She has inspired me for years. I will always love her.
Seeing the emotion on Joni's face as James Taylor sang "River"... Of course they go way, way back... I can only guess what they both were thinking about in that moment.

This is a fantastic convention of Joni enthusiasts; without a weak link, but led masterfully by Cyndi Lauper's "Carey", Thompson's "Woodstock", and Elton John's "Free Man in Paris". Thanks so much for reconnecting me and my wife with the music that helped us understand each other and ourselves . . . .
Joni still looked happy & healthy here in this fine tribute to her legend. Unfortunately, she is 80 now, recently recovered from a stroke, and did not look so well at this weekend's Grammy Awards.
But even in her weakened state she managed to Belt out Both Sides Now, one of her many classic songs!
She's recovering from a brain aneurysm and still radiates joy. She just starting performing again last year. She's doing just fine.
How does so much beauty come from one soul?

Joni...A high school friend who sang and played piano turned me on to you. During a "day off"" in high school, enjoying a day of "blotter", "Songs to Aging Children" touched me so transcendentally...that's the best way I can describe it. Anyway, your words have escorted me through high school and helped me through relationships in college. In a letter to a boyfriend I wrote, " We're like America and Russia, Always keeping score, We're always balancing the power, And that can get to be a cold, cold war, We're going to have to hold ourselves a peace talk, In some neutral cafe...." I've warmed my own voice up to yours and have been able to measure if I'm treating my "reed" appropriately. Thank you forever and always. Now that we are all so much older, this rendition of "Both Sides" now has proved to be timeless, and means oh so much more now because of our age. Brought me to tears.... Je vous remercie encore et encore....

Joni has enjoyed the process, which allowed her to not be swayed by the top ten charts. She brought new innovations to writing, instrumental play, melding genres and set an example for artist to explore, as she was doing, without being afraid to fail!
