April 2024 here. The determination Joni has is out of this world. When she had the stroke, they said she’d never walk or talk again nor sing. Yet, there she was standing and singing for Elton John’s Gershman award live on PBS the other day!😊
She was about 50 here (still a classic beauty) and the cigarettes changed her voice to a mellow husky sound. So many hours spent listening to her in the 70’s. If I were on a deserted island and could only have one record with me it would be one of hers.
Not just the cigarettes, a stroke/aneurysm also effects a person's speaking voice. Listen to Patricia Neal's voice before and after stroke. Joni's voice on Shine (2007) was more mature but I think her current beautiful, deeper, richer timbre is a combination of factors. I LOVE it! And her laughter, just as lyrical, too!
I too, have been binging Joni Mitchell now for the last month. She was one of my favorites back in the 70s. She is pure genius, I just love her. Her melodies, her lyrics, just everything about her totally addicted lately.❣️❣️
@@hansemannluchter643 So... as I said, well inferred, her voice has been ever changing/growing and I love her early, pre aneurysm/smoky/aged, and current husky. learned voice. Love all the phases & stages of Joni!
Joni Mitchell has been a companion, comfort and balance for me since I was a young man trying to do the right thing. Her poetry and thoughtfulness helped me think for myself. Thank you Joni for giving us what you have
Well, I gotta tell you, per usual, this woman, Ms. Joni Mitchell never ceases to blow my mind AND, my heart completely out of my body and existence really. It's not a wonder why she is ( what's a word bigger than existenc. I had to hold my own body down). Thank you Ms. Joni I so appreciate what you have done for the world. A~
There is no better singer-songwriter in the world than Joni Mitchell! I, almost 67, know her entire musical oeuvre and am still impressed by her very beautiful voice and stylistic music! Joni, thank you for all these beautiful things that you have composed primarily for yourself, but also for us (your audience)!! Thanks!!
Love love this. Shows a beautiful, 54 yr old Joni for what she was beyond looks: a serious thinker and poet as well as a terrific musician. Oh, and of course a painter ;)
There are many very good American female artists, but Joni sticks out in poetry, in daring jazzy experiments. Have been listening to her wonderful work since age17, now 50years of her wonderful music. Thank you, Joni, you're like a loved sister!
Fiona Apple as well. In fact, Joni is one of her influences if I'm not wrong. Besides, both hate being "celebrities", just prefer to have a quiet life. If I were a successful artist, I'll do the same. Another reason to love Joni.
Pure Joni 😍😍 just her with that voice, those words , those melodies and a guitar style unique to her. If I wasn’t able to listen to anything else but Joni for the rest of my life I would have all I need. One day she will be recognised for the true talent that she is
Hearing her now so far from the late 60s when I would listen over and over to her early albums as a teenager it has been a journey worth being with her on. Her Barotone guitar is so complimentary of her like the finest red wine.🍷 ❤
This is Joni at her best! I'm SO disappointed The Nobel-committee didn't award her this years prize in literature . There should also be a prize for managing 50+ guitar-tunings!!
She's such an important part of musical history and one of the very best songwriter's that we've seen and heard in our lifetime. Thank you Joni for your spark of creativity.
My true love is Punk, Indie and generally obscure music but since 1973 Joni has always been in my head and heart. Especially her mid 70s years. Hejira and Don Juan's wreckers Daughter are faves. This concert is easily her best sounding live recording. She looks amazing and plays fabulously. I would have given anything to be there.
That was excellent, but of course! Joni has been the soundtrack of my life… she will always be. This reminds me of when I saw her in the 90’s, which was an incredible and happy night. Happiness is the best facelift. I love all of her stages, from Song For A Seagull to Shine, she is one my heroes, from Woodstock, through Hejira to Indigo, she’s got that jazz thing, I loved Mingus when I was a teenager, she truly introduced me to jazz. Love her forever and ever ❤️
I love how in the 90's and 00's Joni casually hit those signature falsetto notes from the beginning of her career. Her voice is one the most fascinating sounds I've heard.
Her voice aged like the finest French wine.. As did her guitar-playing, I've been listening to Joni on and off since "Hejira" was released, when I was 10 1/2.. She is the GOAT female singer/songwriter, and, not least, guitarist!
I absolutely love joni Mitchell she is simply a genius! I've been following her for 50 plus years and she still touches me just as much today! She is definitely in a class by herself, so much femininity and style! Love you forever joni God bless you always 💛!
No words to express how unique and authentic this woman is. One of a kind... Source of inspiration for me, for many, for many yet to come. Big and deep bow to this woman and what she has given us!
Flawless performance - great band - they are all swinging so hard - the songs will endure - the poetry and truth in the lyrics - I am quite sure I will not see anyone come along to rival her.
I happened upon this by chance and am so grateful. Love the contrast of Joni's light against the shadowed darkness & the highlights of Blue! So artful. So beautifully performed by Joni and her musicians. My love for Joni's music goes way back... since the late '60s. I missed Woodstock because I refused to stand idle for hours on the highway. When I learned later that Joni missed it too, it didn't feel so bad anymore. This performance took me back and brought me forward. I taught "The Circle Game" as poetry to 3rd graders in 1970. Now 5+ decades later, still uplifted by her artful realism. Thank you for posting and starting my day off on a sweet ride.
I was born roughly 2 1/2 years before Woodstock, pretty much "hippie-breed". Grew up with Joni,Dylan, Jimi, Beatles, Stones, etc, and some locals, coming out of the speakers.. And not least CSN, with or without Y, my r'n'r guitar hero.. But then there's Joni..... She's in a league of her her own. Have you guys seen the clip from Gordon Lightfoots home, where she just owns Gordon, His Bobness and Roger McGuinn?
I was born in the mid-1960's, and raised on Jimi, Bob, Beatles, Bert, Floyd, Stones, Doors, CSN&Y.. And Joni, Aretha, Janis, Ike&Tina, Mahalia, Cher... And all the locals.. Joni is the best female singer/songwriter ever. And the best guitarist...
I would never be able to say enough good things about Joni or Emmylou Harris. The amazing thing is both started as coffeehouse folk artists, and then grew beyond where they started by quantum leaps. Both are geniuses, both are beautiful, classy ladies, and both have made contributions to the culture that can't be measured with words, and both have been moving all of the furniture around in my head since I was a small child.
The first Joni album I ever bought was Hissing of Summer Lawns in 1975 - a little while ago now :). Converted then to this woman's genius, I have remained so to this day. I'm sure that the quality of Joni's music and lyrics will serve as an important influence for artists for decades to come.
Can I just take a moment to appreciate how gorgeous and lively this woman was at 55...what a role model in so many ways, indescribably influential. Her music speaks like moving paintings, very inspirational.
Just curious , hypothetical question. If Joni was a "plainjane" didn't have the looks, - would you still have a crush on her? Would her tremendous talent be enough? Could you still have a crush on her for her artistic talent as a a writer and musician if she was short, didn't have good looks? Didn't turn heads if she lacked good looks. Would you still have a crush on her?
So glad these moments are recorded. I miss live performance, great lyrics and attitude. Hope the world can go back to events, real time together. Love Joni.
Yes Joni, your hair looks fine. Your voice is great, and, as always: Your guitar-playing is unreal!! Just watching your right-hand dancing on those strings is... AMAZING!!
I'm german and though I don't understand this much of her words I'm enchanted nevertheless by her voice and gutar and her appearance everytime I listen to and watch her. What a unique and fascinating woman and artist! She's so charming and modest and natural. That characterizes really great people. They behave themselfs completely down-to-earth everywhere they appear. Btw, I see this performance for the first time and I can say that I like the arrangements and new versions of her for me well known songs very much. Thank you Matias very much for sharing this treasure with us all admirers of Joni. That's actually really nice! Of course I have instantly subscribed to your channel. Cheers to all Joni lovers from Berlin
AS gifted as a painter as she is a musician, this is one enormous talent who writes superb music and for my money, the most intellligent lyrics that run the gamut from pure fun to powerful social commentary. I love the way she, on her long journey, merged seamlessly with the best in the world of Jazz. Her scope is unmatched and were she a man she would be shoulder to shoulder with Dylan
Joni Mitchell has a pervasive influence, and she's also admired by established artists: Prince, Led Zeppelin, Björk, Seal, Herbie Hancock, Rufus Wainwright, Taylor Swift, Nick Mason, Los Lobos, Minnie Riperton, Judy Collins, Fluke... Since 1985 every time I hear Prince's Raspberry Beret reference "my boss is Mr. McGee" (a character from Don Juan's Reckless Daughter album's Paprika Plains) I just smile for there's Joni. She's even on the cover of Controversy among the bold press headlines! And then of course The Ballad of Dorothy Parker song, in which he blatantly mentions her and Help Me! Or Prince's Christopher Under the Cherry Moon character playing piano with a string arrangement coda right out of Shades of Scarlet Conquering. Lots of Color and Contrast. Björk's only movie was titled Dancer in the Dark, it is surely taken from Joni's own My Old Man. She recorded The Boho Dance. Robert Plant told he was so nervous about meeting his idol he couldn't say a word to her when in the same room! Led Zep III album's acoustic sets were the result of the band being awestruck with The Artist that designed even her own album covers, getting them made with embossing (unlike Madonna, as she once stated!) and gatefolded, plus mastered (like many Prince's records) by Bernie Grundman! Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant recalls meeting her, but she was too wasted... And what an encyclopedia of countless collaborators that played with her! Charles Mingus, Joe Sample, James Taylor, The Band, Thomas Dolby, Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Tom Scott, Chaka Khan, José Feliciano, Larry Carlton, Crosby, Stills, & Nash (remember her Woodstock?), Cheech & Chong (Twisted, crazy... hey flip city!), and her live sets were just tight! Me I was introduced to her music by a boyfriend with a sort of homemade compilation on cassette, songs carefully chosen from Clouds to Hejira, and that got me deliriously hooked on Joni. Even driven to paint my house in terracota and turquoise like her 1977 double album! And I could say that I could drink a case of Joni, and I would still be on my feet. My dreams with the seagulls fly Out of reach out of cry. Thanks u Joni!
Oh, man. I was raised on Joni Mitchell. All through HS @ the rest of my 64 yrs. So Grateful to have found you Joni, you who has brought me back to myself oh so many times when down, lonely or grieving the great loss of my home @ all of my memories in 2017 firestorm. Talk about feeling all alone @ I'm not dealing with this life as well as I had hope to all the old pieces handed down to me also, 1,500+ pieces of SS @ gold which was going to be my nest egg. Guess Not. Thank-you for words of life @ of course, LOVE 💕 Jude
Joni, has awoken the musician and poet in me many times. She's a musical genius. I feel blessed to have been able to listen and experience her different journeys through her art. Thankyou Joni for sharing so much of your awesome art!!! For all time.
Have just discovered this and it is sheer heaven ! The only other concert I had of Joni Mitchell was from the 80's which although featured good musicians, they didn't play it like this. This line up for me represents the perfect vehicle for her songs and oh how I wished she'd done a series of concerts like this, covering most of the albums up to Hejira. And I know that might be a bit controversial, but for me Hejira was the pinnacle of her art and I think the problem for Joni was - How could she follow the soul searching, almost mystical experience that was Hejira ? And personally I don't think she really could.
I've been listening to Joni, singing along with her beautifully crafted words, for most of my life. I am so grateful. She gives so much of herself. Thank you Joni, for everything you have given. Big love, always.
Have you bothered to listen to the scope and depth of his lyrics. His music is as diverse as her, and frankly she has got the ability to dissect like Dylan the cultural situation. She mostly just sings about love lost and sex. Not so Dylan. Of course she has a much better voice. Dylan and Mitchell are the 2 great poets of the classic folk and rock era.
It's because there are no other contemporary males to compare to.. Joni can actually sing, she is an incredibly original and skilled guitarist, using more than 50 tunings, she plays a decent piano, and the dulcimer(!).. She is so talented that Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny backed her up, at the same time! I mean, the list of musicians who played with Joni is just incredible. Even Dylan knew, it's obvious in the recording at Gordon Lightfoots house..
@benwitherington.. Yes, I have. Born in 1966, and my dad was a Dylanologist. I've heard him since before I can even remember. I like Dylan, Joni is just better! A better singer, a better guitarist, and a better poet. Your claim that she only sings if love, lost love, and sex, is just false. I mean, have you actually listened to her??
I can't remember whether it was listening to Heijira or Hissing of Summer Lawns that, in the mid 1970s finally turned me off the musical direction Joni was taking. It just wasn't my cup of tea.
I knew a young woman once. She arrived at my door with her golden hair shining in the early morning sun.I think she even caused an earthquake living in my house in Dublin. She was my Joni Mitchell for awhile.Years later I saw Joni live. She was perfect, brilliant, beautiful. This is beautiful to have. Thanks for posting.💚
As a species, humans have little to redeem them. Joni is one of those rarities that makes us all better. Simply love her and always have since first hearing her back in '69
A very riveting and poetic thoughtfullness in regards to our times. Well experienced by Joni and mystically and hauntingly melodic regarding her journey. Love this woman's artistry!
Yes she did. Joni at 50+ is WAY better than Joni at 24.Not that she was bad back then, but Goddamn, her voice matured fine, and her guitar-playing? Way under-rated, 50+ tunings? Her picking-hand work?? Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, can do that..
Every single tone Larry Klein plays is played with Love... For the song, and for Joni!! No ego-boosting there. This is one of the best Live-performances ever recorded.
Be still my heart!! Thank you joni!! Thank you for gifting us With such intelligence! Heart! Honesty and Poetry! Take care of your Beautiful self! You are sooo loooved!!

Me too , like most "male" musicians I guess ...
Robert Dore: Me too!
@@suzannelawson9215 Great question. Unequivocally, yes I would. But her beauty sure didn't hurt.. Such genius..
Thank you! Absolute gem!
Joni brings life to life!!! Fond memories of happy times. Thanks
So glad these moments are recorded. I miss live performance, great lyrics and attitude. Hope the world can go back to events, real time together. Love Joni.
I love Joni Mitchell. She was one of the first " poets" I read that I remember had rhythm and rhyme😊.
What a beautiful lady.
Thank you for sharing.
That woman's genius is just mind-boggling - Bach, Rembrandt and Shakespeare rolled into one.
And Vincent Van Gogh😊
@@sidilicious11 Yeah but he was nutz. Joni is not.
Yes Joni, your hair looks fine.
Your voice is great,
and, as always:
Your guitar-playing is unreal!!
Just watching your right-hand dancing on those strings is...
AMAZING!!
Lyrical and musical genius no one compares!!!
Incredible. How have I missed this fantastic performance for so long?
AS gifted as a painter as she is a musician, this is one enormous talent who writes superb music and for my money, the most intellligent lyrics that run the gamut from pure fun to powerful social commentary. I love the way she, on her long journey, merged seamlessly with the best in the world of Jazz. Her scope is unmatched and were she a man she would be shoulder to shoulder with Dylan
Above Dylan in the genius department..
@@skygazer4251 She has enormous range, beyond Dylan. The Nobel Committee has some answering to do...
Personally I think Joni is light-years ahead of Bob Dylan in every way imaginable.
Absolutely MAGIC adorable Joni respectfully, and the musicians are awesome, gracias Matias.
Released in 1998, fyi... I saw a gallery exhibit of Joni's work in Laguna Beach, CA in the mid-70s, so this is a great update to that event!
This performance is 1998 ?
@@Tamar-sz8ox - yes. She's like 76 now. That is her "then" husband Larry Klein behind her playing Bass.
I have only just discovered this video and it is fabulous! Joni is so brilliant! I wish I could have seen her or been in the audience! xx
too too much beauty pouring from within this Saint of sound
The. Saint. Of. Sound. ....I. LIKE. that. 🤘🌻
This is an absolute gem!
Outstanding show, profound talent!
Congratulations Joni, you were certainly long overdue to be inducted into the Hall of Fame!
My dreams with the seagulls fly
Out of reach out of cry.
Thanks u Joni!
Joni was part of the Genesis of our current R&B, Rock, and Jazz. She wasn’t just admired, she was the juice!
@@roblarson9065 Absolutely right u r, friend!
Muchas gracias por subirlo y que no se pierda este maravilloso concierto Matías. Agradecido infinitamente
I've been listening to Joni, singing along with her beautifully crafted words, for most of my life. I am so grateful. She gives so much of herself. Thank you Joni, for everything you have given. Big love, always.
Aren't we blessed that this stellar performance is available, for free?
Thank You Joni❤️❤️
@@hansemannluchter643 Absolutely.
Amazing Joni! Thank you for your music...and thank you Matias for posting this concert!
Good lord, is "Heijira" a timeless masterpiece. I'll never get why this woman is compared to Bob Dylan...she's clearly well beyond that scope.
Well; its not a comparison on playing but rather their lyric - I dig it! 😊
@benwitherington..
This is the best gift I could have found! Thank you, Mathias😊
You are more than welcome!
Music that has my soul and my thanks out to the folks that made this video .... the cinematographers. Alive for that moment
Thanks so much, I remember when I see this amazing film... Thanks again.
Mrs. Mitchell, tiene y tendrá todo mí respeto, por su elegancia tanto en su música, arte como en su persona. Gracias, por siempre, mrs.
What a brilliant sound she gets out of that guitar ! My all time favourite singer / songwriter / musician !
I never knew this existed, it is so good. Thanks for putting it up here. I love Joni, she really matured nicely.
‘One of a Kind ‘ An Extraordinary Singer Songwriter Musician Artist the Divinely Talented Joni Mitchell....What a Life !!!!

What wisdom! What power! And how beautiful is this woman❤️
Yes, and she's 55 years old at the time of this recording!
Joni for the Nobel-Prize!!
Great live show of Music,Poetry,and Paintings...Masters !...
Every single tone Larry Klein plays is played with Love...
For the song, and for Joni!!
