Yeah I can't help but think the shoulder pads for the 50s dress are all wrong
We tend to have an idea of vintage fashion based on movies or other media of the time, however, very few people probably dressed like that unless it was a very special occasion and depending on what time period they probably still didn't because it wasn't considered decent. While this video is definitely not accurate, a lot of clothing for all size-types would be considered matronly by today's standards. On top of all this, for a very long time, women tended to make their own clothing, especially when times got tough.
I think most clothing is made for “average” height women, if you are shorter than 5’ 4” or taller than 5’ 7” clothes aren’t “made for you”.I am 5 feet tall, my roommate is 6 feet tall. Both of us have trouble finding clothes that fit perfectly, it’s not a competition.😂

In Ireland it's very difficult to find clothes in a 20 or above in a regular clothes shop, most plus size lines are only available online and not in store unless you go to boutiques or specialist shops and they tend to be expensive and or old fashioned or for evening wear not everyday trendy casual wear
'fat acceptance' has near always been a thing. In the victorian era - the bigger, plumper you were, generally, the wealthier you were/percieved to be 😊
“The average clothes size for women was a 14, so it was decided that any size larger than a size 8 is plus; nobody understands why so many women are anorexic, bulimic, or have some other kind of eating disorder. Nuff said.
Thank you for doing this video. Plus sized folks have always been made to feel less than, even by well meaning loved ones..It feels wonderful to be seen and acknowledged in a positive way.
Hannah Boucher It’s nice that you do😊 I myself envy most of these women a little. I’ve become a bit thinner than in the past when I had a chubby stomach. Losing it hasn’t improved my life much. You’re lucky to have a nice amount of weight on you.
You forgot to mention that the founder of Lane Bryant was the first creator of maternity clothes. Before that, pregnant women stayed in the house due to not having clothing available to them. She also created the first bra that our modern bras are based off of.
Ugh. Some of those fashions. I'm "plus sized" and not riddled with diseases like people would think. Not everyone is going to be sick or overeating. Those women are very pretty.
The only thing they get right here is that plus sized women have been put in unflattering clothing for eons. As a child of a plus sized woman (and, awkwardly, the only one (male and female) in the family who is not plus-sized by fashion standards), I openly have seen over the years how much my mom and also older sister struggled to find things that were interesting and flattering at the same time. What I saw throughout the 90s and 2000s was either designers pulling off tents as shirts and dresses in order to hide the "unslightly fat rolls" or the exact same style as the "non plus size", just scaled up and put in the far corner of the store. These style may or may also make them look like an overstuffed sausage. Even worse if you were a short plus sized lady. Good luck finding stuff that fit your limbs, but don't dig into your shoulders, bust, hips, and/or booty OR drag on the floor. Let's go into shoes now... Um boots. If you're one of the plus sized ladies who have some serious muscle on those legs (which is extremely common), guess what? The boots won't fit around them. It's devastating to see them try to cram their legs into these tiny cylinders of fabric anyway because they want boots (or worse, say "oh no, I can't wear that. I'm too fat"). I wonder if it's harming them? Is it pinching nerves or cutting off circulation? I'm not even going to go into swimwear or lingerie. More or less, it took forever to get my mom into a one piece because she'd say things like "no one wants to see me in something that tight". Now, I am optimistic that fashion directed towards plus-sized ladies is a thing. I am slowly starting to see stuff specifically made for our buxom beauties I am so happy. I finally get to find clothing that some of the most important women in my life will like and look good in. I hope this stuff becomes mainstream so that people don't have to suffer through the fat-shaming any longer. People who are plus-sized are not necessarily unhealthy. When they are unhealthy, it's obvious and I do support them losing weight to maintain their health, but only for that reason. So long as they are happy and healthy, no one should care what their clothing size is.
Stepping in my counselor's office in tears because I am the curvy sister out of four, he looked at me and said, "real women have curves!" I am so thankful for all the choices available to me today in the fashion world. This was interesting.
I'm really upset that you didn't mention the comedian Monique, who used to have a beauty pageant for full figured Black Women during the early 2000s. That show encouraged and inspired so many people 🦋🌻💖
It's crazy how back in the day men thought of bigger women as being undesirable. Now they can't get enough of us lol. Where are all my proud plus size beauties at!? ❤
Fat women are less conventionally attractive because there’s a relatively high chance that if you are seen as ‘fat’ or ‘overweight’ then you probably have health problems and won’t survive long enough to have children to pass on a man’s genes. Obviously that isn’t a deciding factor as to Attractiveness now but reproducing was all the rage in the 20s
Many people in history didn't have to worry about buying "plus size" clothes because most women made their own clothes to fit them. Even my mom who was born in the 60's made her own clothes until she went to college because they were poor.
I can only find stuff that looks like I'm on my way to a job interview or I'm someone's mum. I tend to mix and match weird colours and fabrics to get a fun vibe going.

I hardly ever see short plus size models who are shorter than 5'5. 😳
Patricia tha bibliophile that’s all models though.
All models are tall. Short women get SO much that tall women don’t get pls don’t try and make this an issue lol
Patricia tha bibliophile I think some of these models might be short if they took off their 👠
I think most clothing is made for “average” height women, if you are shorter than 5’ 4” or taller than 5’ 7” clothes aren’t “made for you”.I am 5 feet tall, my roommate is 6 feet tall. Both of us have trouble finding clothes that fit perfectly, it’s not a competition.😂
Lucy b, what's you're i.q ?
You never would have gotten away with that 40's dress in Britain. Rationing was in full force. I didn't expect that style of dress to be featured for the decade
eeeee this is so inaccurate.... I can't even begin..... please don't take this video for historical fact- the text is all really good and informative but there is anachronism abound in the clothes. Do your own research.
The best thing about this video was the shout out to Claire McCardell, the first great American ready to wear designer
The 80s hairstyle on that model is fabulous! She's gorgeous!
I admit I cried tears of joy when Torrid opened in my local mall. But my favorite outfit I got at Ross.
Much love to each and every plus sized woman!!!
dreaming love? What’s so great about plus size women? I don’t get it
@@baddiebeth What so great about thin women?
I don't care, if someone is thin or thicc.
Why send love to gluttons which look like jabba the hutt?
The green dress at the end looked more like a snuggie than a dress. That neckline was awful! I personally would never wear a neckline like that!
The supposed 1910s dress was the prettiest and had the most flattering cut. The model looked very good wearing it. No woman in the 1910s would have worn a dress with a faux front wrap which exposed that much leg with each step.)
Loved the 1970s look! I'd wear it today.
I love the black zipper dress! Very beautiful models.
I’m sorry but that 2010’s one just isn’t it lmao
Fashion Bug in the eighties kept me stylin' until they went out of business. I miss them.
The girl wearing 1880's fashion looks GORGEOUS
I want that 2000’s black dress so bad!!
Do they not consult fashion historians for these?
Just a reminder! Love yourself no matter what. You are perfect just the way you are! Have a lovely night or day!
It's kinda sad that at first there wasn't that much clothing for plus size women...says a lot about society though
Yes but that was over 100 years ago, fortunately a lot has changed.
A 100 years ago there werent that many plus sized women anyway
Yeah it sure does. People were a WHOLE lot less fat back then. Obese in the fifties was more like overweight or chubby today.
@@Debiginger yes i agree but this including plus size women "trend" doesn't exist that long...for example its still not that common to have plus sizes on catwalkes or advertisment for plus size fashion
@@spocktiberiusmccoy9463 yes but i'm not only talking about like 1910, much later there wasn't and still isn't a big representation of plus sizes even though there are now more people "being part" of this section
I had the 80's outfit, except it was a yellow dress. Loved it.
I love to see how fashion changed and to see the history behind it!
5:36 if she's a plus sized model then im a bloated smashed potato
Yeah. I feel the same way, I guess plus for modeling
@@jessicavictoriacarrillo7254 yeah, probably and it just goes to show how wrongly body types are classified in fashion
nowadays even Cindy Crawford would be considered plus size
Big Little Girl That’s weird because the pictures I’ve seen of her online show her to look pretty slender.
Today she would definitely be considered average size (she is not plus whatsoever) but back in the day people were a lot thinner due to a number of factors, so she would have been seen as "bigger" in comparison.
The fact about the fat-in and the NAAFA makes me so happy!!! ☺️
Bruh that’s the best you could do for 1950s 😂 that is an 80s does 50s at best my friend.
It’s so sad how many people treat people of different sizes badly. It doesn’t matter how skinny or big a person is. It’s their choice we should not ridicule them for how they present themselves.
ItsOver. Enjoy ignorance.
ItsOver. I’m basically skinny and my mom always tells me that I could get diabetes. It doesn’t only happen to people with weight.
Kiara Thompson Thanks for being smart. It’s people like you who save my hope in humanity.
Lil Yes Oh well you’re welcome 🙂 I wasn’t really trying to be, I honestly just commented because the person’s comment kind of annoyed me along with a few other people who are saying negative things about the models and their bodies.
How can one feel comfortable with that much fat on their body? It's disgusting.
All of these models are absolutely GORGEOUS!!😃
Yayyyyy to diversity!!!! Wonderful depiction! I am not plus size but I believe we all deserve the same respect, we are all people at the end of the day and all the same!
Yes! Also, I LOVE your username. :) Chance is the best.
@@finn7520 finally someone gets it!!!! Hahahaha thank u so much!!
Can't believe they messed up the 90s like that smh
I love the dress in the 2000s!! I would so wear that and I’m plus size. Anyone know where I can get it?
Looks almost like a fashion Nova dress
I found it! It’s on Forever 21 but it doesn’t come in my size which makes me sad. Hopefully I can find something similar to it.
In Ireland it's very difficult to find clothes in a 20 or above in a regular clothes shop, most plus size lines are only available online and not in store unless you go to boutiques or specialist shops and they tend to be expensive and or old fashioned or for evening wear not everyday trendy casual wear
Sadly, BBW magazine no longer exists and I would love to see it come back.
If you enjoy watching fat blobs, true
@@honda-akari we already got magazines that feature flatties. I'd much rather see womanly figures that women who are built like 12 year old dudes.
To be honest, I didn't even notice any real differences between these dresses.
Where can I get a fit that looks like the 80’s one 😍
I didn’t realize the idea of fat acceptance was that old.
'fat acceptance' has near always been a thing. In the victorian era - the bigger, plumper you were, generally, the wealthier you were/percieved to be 😊
It was always accepted. It's idiots like Tess Holiday that abuse the system and promote obesity just for money and popularity.
Didn't know making clothes for fat people is fat acceptance...?
@@letsstartadialogueeh7692 right lol
@@letsstartadialogueeh7692 That's literally what it is, dumbass.
No mention of Mama Cass? Heresy
1060s had cute prints AND pockets!
No 2010s plus size women are showing their bodies more than ever.
“The average clothes size for women was a 14, so it was decided that any size larger than a size 8 is plus; nobody understands why so many women are anorexic, bulimic, or have some other kind of eating disorder.
Nuff said.
Was the 1970s music Tie Your Mother Down by Queen or am I hearing things?
Thank you for doing this video. Plus sized folks have always been made to feel less than, even by well meaning loved ones..It feels wonderful to be seen and acknowledged in a positive way.
I really never expected a video like this. Really 👍Usually people don’t acknowledge plus size women.
Can we start to get links for the clothing? The black bodycon was cute
1910's is wrong. I thought it was the 20's at first. 1950's is also wrong
I love love, loooove the green eyeshadow on the one model!
As a plus size individual, I love this!
Hannah Boucher It’s nice that you do😊 I myself envy most of these women a little. I’ve become a bit thinner than in the past when I had a chubby stomach. Losing it hasn’t improved my life much. You’re lucky to have a nice amount of weight on you.
I am also plus sized and loved this
@@unamed2516 your still beautiful! Just be you! 😊
You forgot to mention that the founder of Lane Bryant was the first creator of maternity clothes. Before that, pregnant women stayed in the house due to not having clothing available to them. She also created the first bra that our modern bras are based off of.
This video makes me feel SEEN, and I love it 😁
I would love for glamour to do 100yrs of fashion for differently abled women.
Can I just say that these women are all so gorgeous!
I am pleasantly surprised that these women are truly plus size!
Ugh. Some of those fashions. I'm "plus sized" and not riddled with diseases like people would think. Not everyone is going to be sick or overeating. Those women are very pretty.
Besides like a 14 and 16 is considered plus size? Like give me that.
Skirts THAT short in the 1910s? I think not.
Stepping in my counselor's office in tears because I am the curvy sister out of four, he looked at me and said, "real women have curves!" I am so thankful for all the choices available to me today in the fashion world. This was interesting.
the 50s one was sooooooo wrong, looked more 80s to me
I'm really upset that you didn't mention the comedian Monique, who used to have a beauty pageant for full figured Black Women during the early 2000s. That show encouraged and inspired so many people 🦋🌻💖
The way the 2000’s dress is askew bothers me so much oh my gOD ITS MESSING WITH MY HEAD
yessssss, all of these beautiful models in the video are so stunning! bless them.
It's crazy how back in the day men thought of bigger women as being undesirable. Now they can't get enough of us lol. Where are all my proud plus size beauties at!? ❤
I thought it was the other way around
@@imcarressa how you figure?
Fat women are less conventionally attractive because there’s a relatively high chance that if you are seen as ‘fat’ or ‘overweight’ then you probably have health problems and won’t survive long enough to have children to pass on a man’s genes. Obviously that isn’t a deciding factor as to Attractiveness now but reproducing was all the rage in the 20s
@@mars-nf9cj I'm pretty sure men weren't thinking about that back then... Lol. To them skinny equals beauty. Period.
Kaitlin Mojica they were thinking about it subconsciously. Thin equals beauty because of what I just said, it’s a primitive instinct
Many people in history didn't have to worry about buying "plus size" clothes because most women made their own clothes to fit them. Even my mom who was born in the 60's made her own clothes until she went to college because they were poor.
When will they every get these 100 year videos right. Your just continuing the spread of false information. Please stop
I can only find stuff that looks like I'm on my way to a job interview or I'm someone's mum. I tend to mix and match weird colours and fabrics to get a fun vibe going.
I’m glad I’m fat in this decade,I couldn’t walk around looking like a kitchen table cloth
Same here! And that 70s jumpsuit was hideous. Really weird fit.
They show pictures of famous plus-sized icons of different eras like Bessie Smith and Queen Latifah and not identify them by name or share anything about them. WTF?????
