  • Hello all!
I am back down on the south coast of England, on the Isle of Wight for another disused railway explore.
This time I'll be walking the two and a half mile branch line from Brading, on the main Island line between Ryde and Ventnor, and the small coastal village of Bembridge.
The village of Brading is now a couple of miles in land, but up until the mid 1800s, it was a harbour town, with Brading harbour being the most busy on the island.
But then came the reclaimation project, that pushed the harbour further out towards St Helens, and Bembridge, and allowed the railway to be constructed, and completed in 1882.
Unfortunately the line was closed in 1953 to passengers, and ultimately to goods in 1957.
Join me as I take a stroll through the beautiful countryside, and coastal trackbed of what would have been an absolutely stunning little railway.

I like your ideas Gareth, for boosting the Isle of Wight tourism, .. of restoring it into a heritage island, with steam railways, ..

Thanks Gareth for another great walk and talk, I'm always so amazed how such recent history can be almost totally lost within such a short space of time . I'm not sure if its accidental or purposeful . I've passed those buildings near the Pilot boat pub so many times and never realised it was once a railway station and that water fountain was part of a mega structure hotel . I'm lost for words about that one , , but thanks again and I hope you continue to make such informative and enjoyable films for us . All the best and keep on truckin '

What a lovely walk. It's a shame that there is so little left of the old railway, but at least there are photos and maps to show where they were, so they won't be totally forgotten.
It's funny that I came from the east midlands (near Chesterfield), moved to the island, and there you are, coming from the island and moving to the east midlands. I call the island "Derbyshire at the seaside" because it reminds me of where I grew up, and I have been here for almost 40 years.

Good to hear that the White-tailed eagle has been reintroduced. My husband tells me it’s quite a bit bigger than a Golden eagle so quite a sight to behold I’m sure. Any chance of you including one from the island in a future video?

A bit of sun makes all the difference, you need some Avon Skin so Soft for midges! I think it would be cool to live in a house boat, I know someone with a wagon home, it's stunning. It still looked a good walk, that little cut through was quaint where the station building is (now a home). Thank you Gareth.

Totally agree with you and @sovereignjoe5730. Reintroducing steam trains would get people coming probably from all over the world just to see them and travel on them. I reckon the IOM would be minted. There's a huge money making opportunity there ❤️🤗

Excellent video again. Can you tell me please what the music was before the intro? I spoke to my brother, real railway buff, about your suggestion about making the whole line steam. He said it was a good idea, increase the tourist trade, and he also said that the 'new' units were having trouble and there is only one set running on a 40 minute service. Bring back steam!! 🤣
