- In our final walk of our jolly boys outing to Wales and the west of England, me and Phil finish up with a special one.
We start off at what was the 1906 Lea Bailey Goldmine, where we meet a chap called Ben, who now runs the Lea Valley Light Railway. He gives us a tour of the former gold mine, as well as showing us their light railway infrastructure.
We then take a stroll along the former Mitchdean Road and Forest of Dean Joint Railway, which once ran alongside the gold mine.
The railway ran alongside, but the railway never actually ran. There were so many legal arguments over funding, land, and permissions, that by the time the line was completed, it had already been beaten by two other lines, that had already connected the towns of Mitcheldean, and Cinderford,
At that point the Royal Navy took over the now unused Hawthorns tunnel, just a mile or so from Lea Bailey gold mine, and used it to store torpedos, depth charges and naval mines.
They even used the tunnel to store some of their own narrow gauge equipment, some of which, is still in there.
Me and Phil stroll the trackbed before getting in the tunnel and finding some awesome remains, left rotting away, for decades.

That was cool! Ben is a legend!
Lovely fella.
Another top quality video 👍🏻 Really enjoyed this having been through Euroclydon Tunnel myself it was great to see it again and hear some history which I wasn’t aware of, look forward to the next 👍🏻
Thanks a lot. I bet there is so much to find in that area
Wow, not short of things to look at on this one! Ben was amazing with his knowledge, you could tell he had a lot of pride in it. The tunnel was yeah a bit wet but really interesting, especially with the rebuilding of the track. A great one to finish on.
Thank you. It really was. Still got three more to edit from later on!
@IckeWalks I will look forward to those too.
Excellent video mate.
