The Walk
Великобритания
Добавлен 2 мар 2023
My name is Gareth Icke, and when I'm not working, or parenting, I like to walk, and explore.
Join me as I take a walk through the beautiful countryside of the United Kingdom, following disused railway lines, canal paths, and ancient pathways to try and discover forgotten history, and incredible stories from the past.
I am also partial to an underground explore, so you may find me down a lead mine or two, trying to uncover the history that lies beneath the surface.
I am located in the industrial heartlands of the midland England, but at any opportunity, I venture further out into this incredible land.

The Walk - EP 123 - Thor's Cave & The Leek & Manifold Railway - Manifold Valley, Staffordshire
Thank you for joining us on another explore.
The alarm went off at 4:15am for this one, and it was certainly worth it.
I am joined by Phil as we take an explore around the manifold valley in the peak district, where the views are breathtaking, and there is plenty of history to be discovered.
This is part one of an explore around the area, and in this one we’re concentrating on Thor’s cave. Thor’s cave is an incredible natural cavern where human remains dating back thousands of years, have been discovered.
Also on this explore we take a look at a series of other smaller caverns, Wetton Mill, which closed in 1856, plus ‘Nans tor’ cavern which sits on the hill behind the mill.
We then follow...

A 250 Year Old Bridge Hiding In The Woods - The Walk Snippets - Little Eaton, Derbyshire
Просмотров 5937 часов назад
Here is a snippet from our walk around the Derbyshire village of Little Eaton. The village is steeped in history, as everywhere is if you look hard enough, and far enough back. In this particular snippet, we take a look at a 250 year old bridge that lays hidden in the woods above the village. Once connected to Barton Quarry, it now serves as a public right of way, but I would wager that most of...
The Walk - EP 122 - Train Disasters & European Cups - An Explore Of Little Eaton - Derbyshire

Hello, and welcome out on another stomp. The village of Little Eaton sits on the River Derwent, just on the outskirts of the city of Derby, in the East Midlands. The Derwent Valley was the home of the Industrial Revolution, with the mills sat on the river. now forming a world heritage site. We start off at the site of a little know railway spur that came off the main Derby to Sheffield line, an...

Hello everyone. Thanks for joining us on another stomp. This sunset walk takes us to the banks of the River Trent, in between the Derbyshire villages of Foremark and Ingleby. We're here to explore Anchor Church and the incredible story of an exiled 9th century Northumbrian King. It was originally believed that the caves here were simply a folly that was used to entertain the wealthy guests of t...
The Walk - EP 120 - Power & Poverty - The Mass Graves Of The Paupers Pit - Rock Cemetery, Nottingham
Просмотров 784День назад
Welcome out on another explore. This time I am joined by Phil, Ande, and Ande’s lad, Jake. We’re in the historical city of Nottingham in the east midlands of England, and we’ve come to have an explore of the famous Castle Cemetery. Known locally as ‘Rock’ Cemetery, the thirteen acre site was build in 1856 inside a disused sandstone quarry. The area was once where the city’s public executions to...
The Walk - EP 119 - Lost Industries Of Derbyshire - Exploring The Village Of Crich - Derbyshire
Просмотров 72514 дней назад
Phil and myself are back out for a stomp in our native Derbyshire. This time, we're in the beautiful village of Crich. The village sits between the larger towns of Alfreton, Matlock and Belper, and was once a hotbed of industry. We are trying to the find the remains of ancient pack horse roads, quarries, lead mines, tramways, bridges and tunnels, that sit hidden in amongst the now expanded vill...
The Walk - EP 118 - Lost Railways Of The Isle of Wight - Walking The Bembridge Branch
Просмотров 75014 дней назад
Hello all! I am back down on the south coast of England, on the Isle of Wight for another disused railway explore. This time I'll be walking the two and a half mile branch line from Brading, on the main Island line between Ryde and Ventnor, and the small coastal village of Bembridge. The village of Brading is now a couple of miles in land, but up until the mid 1800s, it was a harbour town, with...
The Walk - EP 117 - Gold Mines & Naval Mines - Lea Bailey Mine & Hawthorns Tunnel - Forest of Dean
Просмотров 78621 день назад
In our final walk of our jolly boys outing to Wales and the west of England, me and Phil finish up with a special one. We start off at what was the 1906 Lea Bailey Goldmine, where we meet a chap called Ben, who now runs the Lea Valley Light Railway. He gives us a tour of the former gold mine, as well as showing us their light railway infrastructure. We then take a stroll along the former Mitchd...
The Walk - EP 116 - Is Our Heritage Under Attack? - Brinsley Headstocks Revisited - Nottinghamshire

Its been a year since me and Phil first went out on a stomp, In this walk we attempt the walk we were meant to do that day. We started out in Langley Mill and followed the Watnall branch of the Midland Railway towards Moorgreen colliery, but rain stopped play. We used a break in the weather to nip a few yards up the road to look at Brinsley headstocks, and I am forever grateful for the rain. We...
The Walk - EP 115 - Railways Of The Wye Valley - Redbrook To Tintern - England & Wales
Просмотров 631Месяц назад
Another day, another disused railway explore. Phil and myself are in Gloucestershire to explore a section of the Wye Valley Railway, just across the Welsh border from our last stomp in Monmouth. We start off at the site of Redbrook station (Which I call Drybrook at one point for absolutely no reason), before heading across a former railway bridge that spans the River Wye, and into Wales. Before...

I'm back in Wales, and I am back with Phil on another disused railway explore. This time, we're looking at a short section of the former Ross and Monmouth Railway, between Monmouth Troy station, and Monmouth Mayhill. The railway closed in 1959 but there are still plenty of remains in this small mile long section, including a tunnel, bridges, a magnificent viaduct, and some rather head scratcher...

That I think was the most anxiety inducing episode of all of them thus far! I already get edgy with you and the stingers and slips! Just seeing how bloody deep those holes go, and then you walkin round and not looking down! Haha. Amazing ep though. Thanks for taking us through.
Really enjoyed this!
Brilliant video mate, hats off to you for the climb down to see the bridge
The first incline you saw is called The Wind, also the Lee Dingle Bridge, I walked across that in 1962.
Oh that's awesome. Beautiful part of the country!
Before Ironbridge it was called Coalbrookdale.
Ah, thank you for that. I did wonder!
What a stunning find. Love it 👌
Actually, you guys put in a lot of miles and the runs you mentioned you did last winter I cannot do (one year old knee replacement). You guys are impressive. Just wanted to give you a hard time. BTW, I was born the same year as your father.
Thanks mate. I do love getting the miles in.
“One step at a time” 👍🏻. Why didn’t you film you eating after the hike? ;) jk have a good day, guys
@@stevenberryhill9209 ate at Hulme End station. Decent breakie roll to be fair.
We've just booked a few days in Wetton because of your video! You should get commission from the tourist board 😀. You and Phil are amiable and funny company on these walks.
Hey thanks ! I think you have chosen a very good location to stay, with great views and things to do and explore from all 4 sides of Wetton, not just the area me and Gareth filmed.
@@davidgrimblebyjoyceveres7140 oh that's wonderful. I hope you have a wonderful time.
Last time i went there were no steps and it was a dangerous climb into the cave. Nice to see again.
Ooooof ! ....no steps. Im wondering if the steps were there on my last visit before recent times back in 2008...dont recall.
Gets really busy round Thors Cave at weekends, prefer midweek 🙌🏼 Thank you for the bits I didn't know about, informative and so engrossing 👌🏼👏🏼
Hi. Yes a bit too busy for filming and the echo coming up the valley from a boisterous cave is suprisingly loud !
@@dizzyden1 Thank you!
Great video! The Verve - Storm in Heaven album is their best album and one of my favourite album cover of Thor's cave. I have a 5 ft poster of the album cover. The band was fascinated with the cave's history of mythology, including Paleolithic grave sites and it being the resting place of the wife of an 8th-century martyr.
@@antpeel oh I wasn't aware of the martyr. Thanks for that
You were right about the caves, that was great! Beautiful area. But when you guys were climbing up to Thor's Cave you sounded like a couple of old men. 😀 We need to get you two out in the deserts here for some more serious trails.
@@bwaynesilva haha. I know. Fitness levels need improving
Have you visited the Thurgoland Tunnel north of Sheffield, the echo is unreal and interesting history, there are 2 tunnels one is disused but can get down it
One for the list for sure. I have seen a couple of videos of people doing it!
@@IckeWalks Look forward to seeing it sometime
Good video as per normal. Looking forward to seeing the leek and manifold railway one.
Cheers mate.
Hayup Gareth an Phil, looks like it’d be easy to blow a gasket on the Leaky manifold railway, hilly an treacherous tremendous stuff what a place love them American trains those lamps, caves, bridges waterways an tunnels an semi lost mines. Cheers
It's a wonderful part of the country!
That was great! Thanks both, look forward to future walks in that area. Beautiful countryside, and a lovely time of year to see it.
Its wonderful. Thank you!
I have never thought about why old train tunnels are always arched and not say, perhaps square until now! Could it be to do with aerodynamics re smoke (coal/coke fuelled) from the train ie the coal smoke didn’t enter the train drivers cabin or carriages being pulled. I hope what I’m saying makes sense! 🤣 As always, your videos always makes me ponder about our past and envisage what it may have been………in a good way.👍
Thank you. I always come out with more questions than answers for sure. I like that thoyugh,
@@IckeWalks Me to. I’ve looked at old maps re old railway lines where I live due to your videos. They truly tell do tell us of historical times of the past and how we once lived albeit not that many years ago!
Awesome stomp, definitely not one for doing in the wet though, very precarious. Did you find any old graffiti?
Unfortunately not! Definitely one for a sunny day, you are right.
The River Manifold flows underground for part of its journey, except in flood. It emerges near Ilam.
I read that somewhere but failed to get a fix on that fact so didnt mention it on camera
Thanks for that!
Awesome explore as always hope you all well
Thank you. Hope you are good!
Excellent...
Cool.....
I really enjoyed watching your video about the historic sites in Derbyshire. Best wishes to you and your great father David and everyone in the Icke family. Thank you.
@@user-sv5om3px2k thank you
Ace! Online it says there used to be a log cabin quarryman’s house in the quarry, now hidden by trees.
@julesswindel630 oh that's awesome. The quarry next door has a massive house built inside it now
Fantastic video, lots to uncover in such a small and seemingly unassuming area. Not bad when a mill is turned into a sole private residence 😮 I'm no football fan but I remember Cloughie and his no nonsense approach, I expect I read about it on my paper round , ah the good ole days. "nettles, my favourite word" made me laugh 😅
All that perseverance to break the curse worked! A joy for us! Amazing walk this lot (or this one). Thanks again.
Thank you! Definitely wasn't giving up!
Another cracking video mate. Always put together so well. I have a suggestion for you. The abandoned Meon Valley railway is very intresting, and has a few locations that you can still see near complete platforms. Well worth a consideration.
Yes, it's great there. My friend used to live in Alton and we walked that a couple of years back. Definitely one for next time I'm down south!
Yes. I live in Odiham near to Alton. Only a 30 minute drive to the Meon Valley. Think there is also a abandoned line in the Test valley also. 😊
@@trainadventuresuk Thanks mate. Definitely one to do when I get time to head south!
If you’re looking for industrial places try around Swadlincote area. Loads of old railway infrastructure ,potteries & coal mining history to be found
@@richardmiller6828 thanks mate! Will do!
@@IckeWalks a good walk is follow the old railway line from Swains park up to Measham. Right up your street … loads of bridges, buildings & remnants . Check it out on rail maps on line
Thank you, Gareth, Phil, Andy, and Jake, for giving us a walk to enjoy. Like to see when you guys smile :) And also, I like the music used in these videos - something I’d like to listen to more. Who writes it? Steven in Dallas
Thank you. Called Traveling by Angel Salazar.
Thank you 🌳
Looking forward to it.
Thanks guys for the video - the visit to Brian Clough's grave topped it all for me. Cheers to you and cheers to Cloughie.
Amen.
Another great walk. For the future, more caves would be cool if there are any more you haven't already explored.
You'll love the next video in that case!
Lol Gareth you funny lol haha
Great content guys. Thankyou. I was born almost within a stones throw of Kirkby Central Station and remember it well. My dad worked down Summit pit. The "Summit" area of Kirkby got it's moniker from being the high point of the Mansfield & Pinxton tramway. We used to "sledge" down the pit tips all year round on bits of corrugated tin sheet. They were much steeper then.
Great content as usual Gareth... have you heard of the Quinthillshill railway disaster
I haven't!
May 22nd 1916 just outside Gretna Green considered the worst railway disaster in British history
Great video Gaz, and what a real hidden gem! I'd love to visit Brian Clough's grave, being a long time Forest fan. May do that when we visit Derby again. (My foster daughter lives in the California area of Derby) I'm a proud owner of a birthday card signed by Brian himself!
Ah I used to live in New Zealand area.
@@IckeWalks Uttoxeter New road area
Love this. Feels so comforting that lads (and lads of) of my generation care about this stuff! Keep going, and thanks!
Love uncovering history. That bridge was epic.
Graham from g tech has ripped Your into/ interlude music for the latest advert... I prefer walking to hoovering to be honest and g tech scream's masonry ..."G"... tech with his quick rise, white shirt and suspect sponsorships... aside from my rant, great vid & I liked the Nottingham cemetery one too
@LewisS3w cheers mate.
That was a great vid Gareth, those photos of the train crash were, great and the story behind it. Great touch at the end to regarding Brian Clough, I regularly watch interviews he did. I think BIG PHIL was desperately wanting to tell everyone how much Man City FC have dominated and won when you pair were having your banter! Oh and I ain’t a mill expert BIG PHIL lol

Another terrific video Gareth , and Phil really got me thinking when he asked "how did he know ?" , and if it was more easily accessible due to the re routing of the river , why would he choose that location if it was better known ? That's what I love about your vids Gareth , it always lead to new questions , Thanks again mate and keep on truckin 👍👍ps as someone else has mentioned , it does look a bit melted , but that opens up a whole new can of worms , all the best .
Thank you mate. I know what you mean. I often come away with more questions!
Totally agree with you and @sovereignjoe5730. Reintroducing steam trains would get people coming probably from all over the world just to see them and travel on them. I reckon the IOM would be minted. There's a huge money making opportunity there ❤️🤗
*IOW 🤣
Absolutely awesome guys - wow - I gotta go see that ❤️🙏
Cheers!
Great video guys, I pass by the Icke homestead regularly in Goodwood, where your uncle still lives, worked with him for a few years, another top man.
Always fascinating to see the areas now and what they looked like in old photos. Amazing what engineering feats the Victorians accomplished.
They were a cut above for sure
Thanks Gareth and Phil That was both interesting and very beautiful 👍

Thank you very much!
Thanks again Gareth! Nice break from all the political BS.

I remember the local headlines from back in the 70’s apparently satanic rituals were going on in the tunnels of the cemetery with sacrifices. Seems it has been hushed up ever since, probably explains why they have now been gated shut. You probably won’t find much in archives for obvious reasons, but pretty sure there will be many still remember it happening
