  • Its been a year since me and Phil first went out on a stomp,
In this walk we attempt the walk we were meant to do that day.
We started out in Langley Mill and followed the Watnall branch of the Midland Railway towards Moorgreen colliery, but rain stopped play.
We used a break in the weather to nip a few yards up the road to look at Brinsley headstocks, and I am forever grateful for the rain.
We got to witness the last remaining wooden twin headstocks in the UK, made famous by DH Lawrence, and featured in film adaptations of his writings,.
Last year, the local council cut them down.
We revisit the site to look at what remains.
Why would you destroy such a thing?
I'll leave you to theorise as to why.
We then track the former midland railway through Moorgreen Colliery site, Highpark colliery site, before discovering some amazing remains in the woods. Some railway heritage, some slightly more frightening, before hitting the M1 motorway, and the site of another destroyed landmark, the Watnall colliery and brickworks chimneys.

    Excellent video mate!
I walk that area a couple of times a week when the weathers decent... In fact, I was in that old track bed with the stone bridge a couple of weeks ago and we were wondering what it was, we never guessed it was a railway line. Pretty incredible when you see everything else that's around there today.

Some people just don't care, destroying something like those headstocks is a travesty... the cutting was great, the brickwork was very unusual. Fab as always...thank you

@@IckeWalksIn answer to your question, Broxtowe council was supposed to hold a consultation early May to discuss replacement options, us locals quite rightly want a like for like replacement, I don’t believe it’s been held yet. But many suspect they were simply in the way of the new housing development not far away. Time will tell

It seems really odd to me that the Midland Railway was formed in 1832 to break the monopoly of the Great Northern , when only 3 years earlier than that in1829 , George Stephenson was demonstrating The Rocket , Everything just moved so fast back then .

    • @IckeWalks
      @IckeWalks  Месяц назад

It was actually my understanding that it was the other way around. The great northern was formed to break the monopoly of the midland!

Not only have the local council destroyed a piece of history they have also destroyed a piece of engineering art work. As history and some of the arts go hand in hand I’m of the view it’s a deliberate action to erase architectural/engineering history to minimise our research of history due to these structures disappearing. We are losing so many skills that “makes us humam” sadly.
    Beautiful part of the country.
    Thanks guys. 💕

No doubt if the council had more 'in house' staff, we wouldnt be subjected to these sort of scenario's of mis-comunications. So the 'rotting wood' is all skipped and the headstock wheels are in 'safe keeping'. Lets hope they dont re-appear, half sunk, in a concrete plinth as an entrance display to a newly formed 'Headstocks Avenue' or 'Colliery Way' if you get my jist 😮

what a disgrace doing that to the headstocks but it isnt really a surprise these days look at all the other things they destroy or mess up, such a shame. with the level of intellect these people have im surprise they managed to survive chopping it down.

I think the main beef with this incident is that the Contractors & Council didnt communicate with the Friends Of Headstocks society who look after them. Imagine their shock when they found out they were being dismantled without their knowledge. Shoddy, to say the least.
