Ronnie James Dio played the trumpet as young man. This gives him the ability to control his breathing giving him such a powerful vocal range. He is not screaming, he is using a combination of head voice and glottal compression to “ sing” and not lose his voice.. Rest In Peace Ronnie..

    • @luamoliveira3467
      @luamoliveira3467 Год назад +2

I think differently, I think Dio uses his chest voice a lot combined with his mixed voice (where most vocal coaches highlight a lot in their analyzes regarding the way he distorts his voice), the point is that he had a control absurd vocal and that very rare singers have ever had, he is one of the rare vocalists that in my view and perhaps the only one that I know who had a very high level of vocal manipulation in all the ends of the voice, no one learned to understand and master with so much mastering his own vocal instrument like Dio did for years, it's clear how much he evolved as the years went by and always keeping himself at a high level by singing in very high keys, without losing the momentum of his performances; It's almost unbelievable for a vocalist to reach the age of 65 and reach such high notes with a certain ease, varying between A5 and B5 (a head/whistle voice combination, with such power and compression), his performance of Mob Rules in 2007 demonstrates a lot well that.

Metal got heavier, faster, nastier over the years.. but this right here, this sound, this voice... is original, pure heavy metal. This is where it comes from. Ronnie Dio even invented the "metal horns" hand gesture.

In 84 this WAS metal, the genre has changed much since. I saw this show and the tour in 1986 both at the Spectrum, how I wish I could go back to my high school days

    • @sean4677
      @sean4677 Час назад

This is still metal today. The only thing that changed is that different sub-genres were invented. Look up the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal (an homage to the New Wave of British Heave Metal from the late 70's and early 80's), it's a bunch of new young bands who are heavily influenced by the sound of Maiden, Priest and Sabbath. Bands like Haunt, Visigoth, Ambush, Wolf, Lucifer, Traveller, Smoulder, my personal favorite though was Satan's Hallow but they broke up already.
Also look into the New Wave of Thrash, young bands who are embracing the 80's Slayer/Megadeth/Metallica/Anthrax sound

Ronnie James Dio was someone who traversed a lot of genres as they were being made. He started doing rockabilly as a teenager, but then he got into a band called Elf. They toured with Deep Purple and then the guitarist for Deep Purple formed Rainbow with the band members of Elf. He stuck for 3 albums and then left the band. He joined Black Sabbath, had 2 albums with them, left to start his solo career which is what you watched. He also did 2 more albums with Black Sabbath and his solo career has 10 albums.

In my opinion he is the greatest singer ever. He got his breathing technique from playing the trumpet every day since he was a child, his autobiography 'Rainbow in the Dark: The Autobiography' is a must read. I saw him in concert twice in the 80's, the one time I remember well, I had general admission main floor tickets for 4 of us, we got to The Joe early in the morning, it was in the winter, we were outside in line freezing for hours before they let us in, were got up front to the stage against the barrier for it, definitely one of my most memorable concerts 🤘🏼

The entire song is basically an examination of the Biblical message of 'The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth.'
Of how the ones no one expected much from are ultimately the ones the world will turn to when needed... the question is will they give into the temptation to be petty and hold a grudge against those who looked down on them, or will they rise above their persecutors and become true heroes! Will they stand over the shattered remains of their bullies and gloat about how the tables have turned or let it go and prove their worth?
That's what Ronnie means when he asks, 'Are we evil or divine?' Are we as bad as they say we are or are we something more?

I think, the reason why Robert Plant, Ian Gillan and espacially Ronny James reached this level is really, because in this time there was no other chance, it was the time of great voices, awesome songs the writing and the talent was more important than the production etc. they earned from this and as the time came and Abbey Roads etc. reached the level to do experimental productions, what floyd started with, it was like a holy grale that was open for them to make all what they got in their head and what they learnt in the years in the clubs etc. before possible. I really think this is the reason why they are on this high level! If I think of guitar player like Ritchie or Jimi Page, or Hendrix and the first time they were able to loob a riff, I can imagine what happened to them, because they played everything note by note before, they recoreded a whole album in one day, before, without any loob the thing was played from the beginning till the end, without faults, so next level loobs more space for performance and ideas! And then this trained awesome voices back than, especially DIO who ever worked on his voice and expression. It was really like a growing tree.

The songs Butterfly Ball and Sitting in a dream from Roger Glover ( Deep Purple Bass player ) are showing his full potential in clear voice singing, with Rainbow, he got a very unique setup, Cozy Powell ( one of the best drummers together with Ian Gillan and John Bohnham etc. ) Ritchie Blackmore, etc. We don`t have to talk about black sabbatch Viven etc.!

Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010) RIP.....In my opinion, the greatest Metal vocalist of all time.
This video was from the “Last in Line” tour 84/85...my first (of over 200) concerts I’ve attended since the age of 14. Ronnie is hands down the greatest male Rock/Metal singer of all time.
A few suggestions I think you would also like,
    Rainbow: Stargazer (1976)
Black Sabbath: Sign of The Southern Cross (1981)
Dio: Don’t talk to Strangers (1983)
I could keep suggesting songs from Ronnie James Dio over his 50+ year career all day and night..thanks for posting this reaction.

Bold statement.....Geoff Tate? Steven Tyler (younger days)? Robert Plant?
Dio is certainly waaaaay up at the top.....but there's competition for the claim of greatest.

Ronnie James Dio was one of the greatest vocalists of all time, in my opinion. He was awesome with “Rainbow, Black Sabbath and solo, such a great voice and can sing anything and can get very heavy metal.

Ronald James Padavona, Italian American, adopted the Dio surname in early 60's after a Mobster of italian mafia, Johnny Dio.
Started the trompet at 5 years old.
Started career in 1955 and first record in 1957.
Became a singer and Bass player.
Dio sang Doo woop and Blues and Jazz crooner and combined with his baroque approach in Ronnie Dio and the prophets,
And many variations of that band .
In 1967 he created electric elves that became Elves then Elf around 1970.
Which was more blues rock and Hard rock oriented, Heavy.
Elf did 3 albums between 1972 and 1975, produced By Roger Glover , bass player of Deep Purple mark II.
Dio left the bass live after 1974 becoming just Frontman.
Dio sang also the famous Love is All on Butterfly Ball from Roger Glover.
Elf did numberous times the opening for Deep Purple mark III ( with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes ).
When Ritchie Blackmore ( guitar ) decided to leave Deep Purple after the Stormbringer tour, he took Dio and all the Elf members ( except Guitarist 😄) and form Rainbow.
Then even there re some line up changes, Dio did the 3 first albums that were very influencal in what heavy metal elvolved into , Ritchie's blackmore Rainbow ( 1975), the thunderous Rainbow'S rising (1976) and Long Live Rock n roll (1978).
Blackmore wanted a more commercial style , Dio left , and joined Black Sabbath after Ozzy firing.
He did 2 masterpieces with them, Heaven and Hell (1980) , and Mob Rules (1981).
After some issues on the mixing of the Live Evil (1982), Dio with drummer Vinny Appice did formed Dio.
Dio did a lot of good albums , among them Holy diver (1983) and Last in line (1984).
He did rejoined Sabbath for a very heavy album called Dehumanizer(1992) then left again and pursuit his solo Band
In 2006 , The Dio Sabbath incarnation reformed within the moniker Heaven & Hell , and did the Devil you know (2008).
Unfortunally Dio passed away in 2010 from a stomach cancer.
He was 67 years old ( he s born in 1942).

I got to chat with him for about an hour or so backstage around 2000. All we talked about was baseball. He was a diehard Yankees fan, and I am Red Sox all the way, and we kept it friendly. It was a magnificent afternoon.

I saw him in ELF many times in Syracuse NY in the very early seventies. ELF got the opening gig for Deep Purple and when Blackmore left Purple he took the entire band, minus Dio's cousin Dave Feinstein (guitar) and the first Rainbow album was born with the hit "Man On The Silver Mountain."

Lead singer Ronnie James Dio formed his solo band Dio in 1983... Prior to that, he was born Ronald James Padavona as an Italian-American on the East Coast. He changed his name to 'Dio' when he became a singer in the late 1950's and spent the 1960's singing in R&B/ do-wop groups. His Catholic upbringing left him resentful against the harsh religious rhetoric of the church...
Around 1970, Ronnie Dio was introduced to the heavy rock genre of music w/ Led Zeppelin & Black Sabbath... he formed his own heavy rock band Elf in 1971, and opened for Deep Purple in the 70's.
In 1975, Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore quit the band and enlisted Ronnie Dio to become the singer of his new band Rainbow... he recorded 3 albums by 1978 before he was fired (Blackmore wanted Rainbow to go in a pop rock direction w/ new singers)
In 1979, Ronnie Dio was offered a job by Black Sabbath to replace original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne... he brought a new vigor to Black Sabbath in 1980, but he left after 2 albums in 1982... Having a name for himself as a vocalist, he formed the band Dio.
Dio released their first album 'Holy Diver' in 1983, and it became a gold-selling success... the 2nd album 'The last in line' sold platinum (1 million copies in the US) in 1984... Dio carried on w/ various members until 1991, when Ronnie James Dio was offered to sing for Black Sabbath again in 1992. However, that reconciliation only lasted 1 album ('Dehumanizer' in '92) before he quit in '93 and reformed Dio.
Sadly, Dio spent the 90's decade w/ low popularity as heavy metal music was in decline for years... Dio persevered after 2000, and reconciled once again w/ members of Black Sabbath in 2006 to form the band Heaven & Hell.
In 2009, Ronnie was diagnosed w/ stomach cancer... he went for treatment until he passed away in 2010 at age 67 (R.I.P.) Ronnie James Dio was recognized for popularizing the "devil's horns" gesture at concerts 🤘 He said was inspired by his superstitious Catholic grandmother, who used the gesture to ward off the 'evil eye'...

Ronnie James Dio was trained as a bassist. I am not sure the exact story how he started singing, but the man got a serious set of pipes.
He was 5'4" tall and was called the little man with the big voice.

You realize that Ronnie James Dio is the singer in the Rainbow video you just reacted to, right? 'Mistreated' Live in Munich 1977? The GOAT of vocals!! You have SO much unbelievable singing to experience with Ronnie in the bands 'Elf', 'Rainbow', 'Black Sabbath',, 'Dio' and 'Heaven and Hell' (which was Black Sabbatb reformed as old dudes, but still incredible!) Always check out Dio LIVE, his vocals were beyond belief and he improvised a lot!

You NEED to listen to Rainbow singing the song Mistreated in Munich in 77. Dio’s best vocal performance and it’s insanely good!
